INVERNESS is an alternative rock band from Chile that has been steadily touring and

recording for 8 years. With songs that have been able to avoid common places in

rock, pop and their most elaborate derivatives (post-rock, shoegazing and dream-

pop), the band has managed to craft their signature psychophonic sound, away

from what most people in the States or Europe (or anywhere) would expect from a

latino band, but having a lot of it in them anyway. This picky search for sound has

kept them in a healthy state of creativity and everlasting research. Although this

apparent fussy approach to the biz might seem a bit too far-fetched for a band that

still needs to pay bills and diapers, INVERNESS are willing to take that toll: being the

most famous unknown band in Chile. But let us have a look at the facts.

INVERNESS has built their career almost

exclusively on the old “word of mouth”

philosophy. The band has grown

prestigious in the small alternative niche

circuit in Chile due to some remarkable

milestones in their career.

Very early on, they participated in Montemapu International Festival. Their slot

came just before Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie. That night, the musicians managed

to show him part of what their debut album “Illuminaciones” would be. Guthrie

thought the songs were “interesting”. This mere word, nevertheless, proved to be

enough English affection for them that night. INVERNESS took it as a real slap on

the back in terms of what they were intending to do, musically.

A year later, the band was invited to close the screenings of ‘Heima’, by Icelandic act

Sigur Rós, in Santiago. The shows earned them some comparisons that would later

get diluted as the band further developed their sound.

In 2011, INVERNESS was invited to the prestigious SXSW Festival in Austin. Despite

the fact of being an unknown band, BBC Scotland included them on a documentary

about the festival. This resulted in finally and definitely entering the radar of

specialized media in Chile.

The SXSW 2011 show allowed them to add appearances on Artists 4 Artists Festival

and on the DMI House Festival, alongside more than 20 international bands from all

over the world.

INVERNESS has served as support act for important and well-established Chilean

bands. They achieved, most notoriously, to be the backup band for the English

musician Neil Halstead from Slowdive for his show in Chile in 2013. This

collaboration allowed them to establish a very important bond with one of their

true musical heroes and most defining mentors when it came to sculpting their

sound. This show would bring unforeseen consequences for the Chilean band.

For their most recent album, “Después de Mañana”, the band was supported by

Neil Halstead on guitars for the first single, Luz Ignota.

The song ended up being co-produced by Halstead. All of these experiences have

helped the band grow professionally and musically.

Very early on in their career, INVERNESS understood how important it is to

decentralize culture in Chile. Proof of this is their insistence in playing shows as

frequently as possible in cities other than Santiago. This has allowed for building

loyalty in their fans, since the band brings quality shows —both musically and

visually— to cities that have a scant offer of alternative music.

This interest is a crucial part of their plan to promote their music. Thus, INVERNESS

has visited the cities of Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Rancagua, Curicó, Concepción,

Valdivia, Temuco, Lebu and Cañete in an effort to contribute to the country’s

musical variety.

Although playing shows throughout Chile is paramount for their strategy,

INVERNESS has also put special emphasis on the international development of their

career. We already mentioned the United States Tour in 2011, with SXSW as starting

point. Throughout the years, nevertheless, they have been able to find and establish

strategic alliances with relevant industry promoters in the United States,

México, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil.

These alliances resulted not only in quality shows for the band; it also opened up

the doors for other alternative rock bands from Chile to be noted by relevant agents

in the industry.

In all of the countries that INVERNESS has visited so far (United States, Ecuador,

Colombia, México and Argentina), they have established important meetings with

influential industry agents. Their fan base has been steadily growing in these

countries.

In 2017, INVERNESS was nominated in three categories of the Premios Pulsar: Best

Rock Artist, Album Of The Year and Artist Of The Year with their album

'Después de Mañana'. These nominations serve as recognition to their steady

professional work during these years.

The joint effort of INVERNESS and their fans to have the band in other cities has

made them become agents themselves. The experience attained en route has

allowed them to develop the know-how to look for their own internationalization.

This has led them to understand that the cultural exchange and collaboration

among musicians and industry agents are fundamental in expanding not only their

music, but also the music of their peers. Proof of this is the label

LeRockPsicophonique, which is a seminal organization that looks for the

development of artists associated with alternative rock in Chile. Rodrigo Jarque is

its director and founding father.

From almost its very beginnings,

the band has been closely

associated with films, particularly

to the cinematographic works of

the award-winning Chilean

director Matías Bize. Most

notably, INVERNESS composed

music for “La Vida de los Peces”

[The Life Of Fish]; it won a Goya

Award in 2011. In 2016, they

worked on “La Memoria del

Agua” [The Memory Of Water].

Although these collaborations in

films have allowed them to boost

their visibility, the band has

developed a musical career that

goes beyond what is merely

audiovisual.

Illuminaciones (2009)

“Illuminaciones avoids the mere emulation of shoegazing revivalism and proposes a lyrical imaginarium that oozes dreamy images.” – Super45. “Inverness surfaced as one of the most remarkable names in the national harvest in 2009.” – Radio Horizonte. “There is a moment in the day in which the sun starts to set so the shadows of things get stretched. That is the effect in the music of INVERNESS. Not because it is twilight-y or somber, but because of the way in which the sound extends itself. This band’s songs are not in a hurry and the tones of the electric guitars or harmoniums themselves increase this feeling of pause. […] Those landscapes, those pauses, those cold weathers are also here, with lyrics occasionally written in English that increase general mystery behind the album’s verses.” – El Mercurio.

“Inverness looks for the sound, not the trends.” – David

Ponce.

Fuegos Distantes (2011)

“A second release that positions INVERNESS as one of Chile’s most ground-taking national bands in a genre that just starts to get noticed here. Though apart from that, there is a sound in ‘Fuegos Distantes’ that grows after each listening, a sound that reveals little details after each pressing of the “play” button. All this makes it a record that is unique in its kind.” – Rockaxis. “Fuegos Distantes, the new album by INVERNESS from Chile, is here to confirm all the praises they got with their debut.” – 192.cl

“Fuegos Distantes must be one of the best second albums of a Chilean band in a long time [...] Whether it is shoegazing, alternative or post-rock is simply irrelevant. This is good music played with an exceptional melodic richness.” – Alfredo Lewin.

Sól (2014) “The sound of INVERNESS is floating and ethereal, but heavy and deep.Sometimes, these musicians hit slowly to punch harder. The epic crescendos in their music are a trade mark. Either with pianos that draw a hazy atmosphere or with strings that shine crystalline like light in the middle of the cold, the band’s songs are an invitation to marvel.” – Extravaganza! Magazine. “Sól” is nothing but confirming that Rodrigo Jarque and his band have very interesting things to say and that their particular rendition of post-rock sounds keeps on sounding fresh and elaborate, which makes them stand out as one of those bands that are scarce in our current musical panorama.- Rockaxis Magazine.

Después de Mañana (2016)

“Without ceasing to be a synonym of contemplative melancholy and cinematographic progressions, INVERNESS faces this second stage with a different attitude, one that has them showing more courage; though love in their highly poetic lyrics is still a rather tempestuous issue […] This is an album of meticulous and thoughtful making. Not bad at all for a band whose debut was conceived during an extremely isolated period in the southmost region of Chile and whose members played their first gigs hiding behind a curtain, without showing their faces.” – Super 45. “Beautiful and resounding complexity manufactured with strong feeling; INVERNESS is a Chilean band that has dared to defy what is typical in music.” – Fuego y Cenizas. “INVERNESS bets on the song format and at the same time tries to broaden their sonic palette without betraying their own discourse. […] INVERNESS keeps on exploring and expanding their musical language on “Después de Mañana”. All this shows the restlessness and variations the band can offer within their own context, daring to go beyond, although —and most importantly— without dropping out of the song as a valid format when it gets to experimenting with sounds. INVERNESS is certainly presenting a record that is coherent with their own story: one that constantly evolves and that shows a more than interesting chapter in this new work.” – Revista Rockaxis.
