R.M.B AUXILIARY By Betty Young (Cobaw) Firstly… Wanted: New Members! Small jars for jams and pickles Baby wool – please look in your cupboards for this much sought-after item as we have knitters who make beautiful articles for our stalls. 3rd August Stall- Buyers attending were well down, BUT “surprise, surprise” the result of the mornings takings was $2016.00, $5.00 more than the previous one. So a VERY BIG THANK YOU to all who sup-ported us on that day. The raffle was won by a school crossing supervisor who bought the first ticket sold. The scarf could be handy for warmth on these cold days. There is a busy time ahead with the Daffodil Festival and Malmsbury Fayre. In the meantime, we have our Annual Meeting coming up when new Of-fice Bearers will be elected. In the October re-port I will be able to tell you how much we have raised for the year and how we have spent the money you all helped us to raise. Remember – Your Auxiliary needs NEW MEM-BERS – relatives and supporters please think seriously about joining. A GARDEN VISITOR By Angie Keeler. Gregarious is my nature, I flash my gorgeous chest, hop among the fresh-tilled soil, eating garden pests. Although I am quite partial, it’s true as true can be, to a fresh- tugged juicy worm, or for breakfast, lunch, or tea. Many a gardener greets me as great company, I often watch with head on side, as they stop for tea. A dropped crumb from a biscuit, or hand held little treat, may tempt me ever closer to your garden seat. I am not just for Christmas; you can see me all year round singing from the treetops, foraging on the ground. You know me as Robin Redbreast, though or-ange is my hue, if you dig the veggie patch, I may deign to follow you.

CLEARING THE AIR

We’ve been married more than

60 years,

had our ups and downs,

one or two arguments, well,

you have to stand your ground.

Then when it is all over and

we have cleared the air.

we say that we are sorry

and say how much we care.

I raise my glass to our good health

and thank the Lord above,

for the family we have had,

to give us so much love.

THE TWILIGHTER’S CONCERT By Betty Young (Cobaw) This group of local mixed choristers’ theme for August was ‘Springtime’. I am sure they tried to put winter behind us and made us think of how many beautiful songs are connected with flowers. We “Tip toed Through the Tulips” and we could almost smell the perfume of violets as they sang “Sweet Violets” and remember “There is a Rose That Grows in No-man’s Land”. We are so grateful for this group for providing us with songs we all remember and can join in singing. Thank you ‘Twilighter’s’.

KYNETON OLD TIME DANCE GROUP By Bev Coutts (Pastoria) On Monday the 12th August the R.M.B. Resi-dents and Staff enjoyed a second visit from the Kyneton Old Time Dancers. Sidonia dining area was the venue for a delightful hour of Old Time Dancing. The residents and staff were invited to join in with the dancing and to sing along with the lovely music or just sit back and be an appre-ciative audience. The afternoon ended on a happy note with promise of a return visit.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Some certain smells can turn back time

and make me feel a child again –

Hot tar that’s melted in the sun,

A garden’s freshness after rain.

My mother’s kitchen comes to mind

With any whiff new baked bread,

and wood that has been freshly cut

evokes my Father’s garden shed.

But one smell more than all the rest

Brings back childhood scenes to my

Mind’s eye and that’s the scent of

Lavender that Grandma wore in

Days gone by!

MIND GAMES GETS CONSIDERABLY BETTER! By Stephen West (Barfold) Yes, “CONSIDERABLY” was our chosen word and we got 350 new words from this one. “UNFORGETTABLE” was our last unforgettable number at 310 words. That is, we six Mind Games members (more wanted) achieved this new record. Jo guided us all on achieving this new record. Yes, again, 350 different words from the let-ters in Considerably. “Ain’t we clever”!

ANGER: WRITTEN BY JOCK GIRVAN By Betty Young (Cobaw) Betty explains “These two scripts written rules of good advice were penned by Jack (Jock) Girvan, born at Metcalfe in 1902. He walked quite a distance across paddocks to Metcalfe State School. His parents would not allow him to wear shoes until he got to school – hence his long trek was barefooted. He rode his bike from Metcalfe to Castlemaine each weekend to pursue his secondary education. He was always keen on script writing. The photo of he and his wife was taken on their 50th wedding anniversary. He is my uncle – of all his rela-tives I seem to be the only one with this ad-vice SO why did he send it to me????

Betty’s uncle Jock wrote- It is better to swallow angry words, than to eat them afterwards. Anger is wind which blows out the lamp of the mind. Anger is just one letter short of danger. The anger of today, is the remorse of tomor-row, one thing that improves the longer it is kept, is your temper. People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing. When angry, count ten before you speak, if very angry, count one hundred.

Nothing cooks your goose quicker than a boil-ing temper. Never pick a quarrel even when it is ripe. To be able to converse in several languages is valuable, to be able to hold your tongue in one, is priceless. A dog makes more friends than man, because he wags his tail and not his tongue. You can put up with a small mind so long as it is not connected to a big mouth. It is better to keep your mouth closed and ap-pear ignorant, than to open it and remove all doubt. We have two ears and one mouth: are we meant to listen more and say less? When you are in the right, you can afford to keep your temper: And when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. BASIC TRAINING – GOLDEN RULE By Jock Girvan If you open it, close it. If you turn it on, turn it off. If you unlock it, lock it. If you break it, repair it. If you can’t fix it, call in someone who can. If you borrow it, return it. If you use it, take care of it. If you make a mess, clean it up. If you move it, put it back. If it belongs to someone else and you want to use it, get permission. If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone. If it doesn’t concern you, don’t mess about with it. Don’t put down, put away.

I like jam now – I’ve just got used to it.

I like apricops!

Sophie was watching the Wiggles on TV with her Pa, she said “ They are real

people you Know” Pa said “you know everything,

don’t you?” Yes I do! Just ask Mumma and Daddy.

I’m going back to Nan’s so I won’t “destroy you” meaning she would not “disturb” her mother when she was feeding little Mary.

A man hands his girlfriend a small package the size of a small jewelry box for Christmas the woman gets incredibly excited and rips open the package, only to find a deck of playing cards. “What the heck is this?” She yells, and throws the deck of cards onto his lap. “What?” the man responds, clearly up-set. “You said all you wanted for Christmas was something with diamonds in it”. Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do. As I watched the dog chasing his tail I thought "Dogs are easily amused", then I re-alized I was watching the dog chasing his tail.

1764: Fletcher Christian, the man who led the mutiny on the Bounty against Captain Bligh, is born. Fletcher Christian was born in Cumberland, England, on 25 Septem-ber 1764. He went to sea at the age of sixteen, and two years later he sailed aboard HMS Cambridge where he met William Bligh for the first time. Bligh, ten years older, had also started his seagoing career at the age of 16, quickly rising through the officer ranks. Bligh and Christian were very close during their early years together. The 'HMS Bounty' sailed with a crew of 45 men from Spithead, Eng-land in December 1787 under Captain William Bligh, bound for Tahiti.

Their mission was to collect breadfruit plants to be transplanted in the West Indies as cheap food for the slaves. After collecting those plants, Bounty was returning to England when, on the morning of 28 April 1789, Fletcher Christian and part of the crew mutinied, taking over the ship, and setting the Captain and 18 crew members adrift in the ship’s 23-foot launch. Captain Bligh sailed nearly 6000km back to England, arriving there on 14 March 1790, where he was initially court-martialed and ultimately acquitted. The mutineers took HMS Bounty back to Tahi-ti, and collected 6 Polynesian men and 12 women. They then continued on to Pitcairn Island, arriving there on 15 January 1790. After burning the ship they established a settlement and colony on Pitcairn Island that still exists. Fletcher Christian was killed during a conflict between the Tahitian men and the mutineers which killed all the island men but one. By the time Captain Mayhew Folger of the American sealing ship 'Topaz' landed at Pitcairn Islands in 1808, only John Adams survived. Adams, by then a changed man after his conversion to Christianity, went on to become the respected leader on Pitcairn. In 1856, the Pitcairners had outgrown their island. Many of them requested resettlement, and were taken to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. Norfolk's convict settlement had recently been closed and the British authorities were concerned that French or Spanish interests might take over the island if it were completely evacuated. Today, many of Christian's descendants, along with the descendants of the other mutineers, remain on Norfolk, where they keep alive the traditions, culture and language of the Pitcairn Islanders.

2004: The 4179 Toutatis/1989 AC asteroid passes within 4 lunar distances of Earth. The 4179 Toutatis/1989 AC is an asteroid with an irregular orbit. Its very low orbital inclination (0.47°) and its orbital period of just under 4 years causes Toutatis to make regular close approaches to Earth. One such approach occurred on 29 September 2004, when it came within 4 lunar distances of Earth, or 0.0104 AU (astronomical units). There was no danger of Toutatis impacting the Earth, but its proximi-ty provided excellent opportunities for observation of the asteroid. Toutatis was first observed on 10 February 1934, but only named

when it was rediscovered by astronomer Christian Pollas on 4 January 1989. It is a very irregu-larly shaped object consisting of two lobes, one measuring approximately 4.6 km wide and the other 2.4 km wide.

HOW DID SEPTEMBER GET IT’S NAME?

The month kept its original name from the Roman calendar in which septem means “seven” in Latin marking it as the seventh month. September was named during a time when the calendar year began with March, which is why its name no longer corresponds with its placement in the Julian and Gregorian calen-dars.

WE CAN THANK AUSTRALIA FOR... 1838 Pre-paid postage - Although he might not be remembered fondly by stamp collectors, the colonial Postmaster-General of New South Wales, James Raymond, introduced the world's first pre-paid postal system and spared many customers the need to lick glue for adhesive of stamps. 1843 Grain stripper - John Ridley and John Bull of South Australia developed the world's first grain stripper that cut the crop then removed and placed the grain into bins. 1856 Refrigerator - Using the principal of vapor compression, James Harrison produced the world's first practical refrigerator. He was commissioned by a brewery to build a machine that cooled beer. 1874 The underwater torpedo - Invented by Louis Brennan, the torpedo had two propellers, rotated by wires, which were attached to winding engines on the shore station. By varying the speed at which the two wires were extracted, the torpedo could be steered to the left or right by an operator on the shore. 1876 Stump jump plough- Robert and Clarence Bowyer Smith developed a plough which could jump over stumps and stones, enabling newly-cleared land to be cultivated. 1885 Telpahane - The forerunner of the television. It was invented by Henry Sutton in Ballarat. 1877 Mechanical clippers -Shearing is a backbreaking job but it was even more back breaking when sheep were sheared using scissors. Frederick York Wolseley succeeded in developing a practical hand piece with a comb and reciprocating cutter driven by power transmitted from a stationary engine. The invention greatly increased the profitability of the wool industry. 1879 Ship refrigeration - Credited with the manufacture of the first artificial ice, Eugene Nicolle and Thomas Sutcliffe Mort developed shipboard refrigeration that resulted in the export of meat from Australia to Great Britain. 1889 Electric Drill - Arthur James Arnot patented the world's first electric drill on 20 August 1889 while he was an employee of the Union Electric Company in Melbourne. He designed it pri-marily to drill rock and to dig coal. 1894 First powered flight - Perhaps inspired by the boomerang, Lawrence Har-grave discovered that curved surfaces lift more than flat ones. He subsequently built the world's first box-kite, hitched four together, added an engine and flew five metres. Hargrave corresponded freely with other aviation pioneers, including the Wright Brothers, but unlike the Americans who monopolised their ideas, Hargrave never patented his. Because it promised public access, Hargrave left all his research to the Munich Museum. Had Hargrave gained local support to further develop his ideas and not been so generous in sharing his ideas with other aviation pioneers, he probably would have been the first person in the world to achieve sustained and controlled powered flight. 1897 Differential gears - David Shearer of South Australia built a steam car with a differential inside left rear wheel hub. 1902 Notepad -For 500 years, paper had been supplied in loose sheets. J A Birchall decided that it would be a good idea to cut the sheets into half, back them with cardboard and glue them together at the top. 1903 Froth flotation process- The process of separating minerals from rock by flotation was developed by Charles Potter and Guillaume Delprat of New South Wales. 1906 Feature film - The world's first feature length film, The Story of the Kelly Gang, was a little over an hour long. 1906 Surf life-saving reel - The first surf life-saving reel in the world was demonstrated at Bondi Beach on 23 December 1906 by its designer Lester Ormsby. 1910 Humespun process -The Humespun process was developed by Walter Hume of Humes Ltd for making concrete pipes of high strength and low permeability. The process revolutionised pipe manufacture in 1910 and has since been used around the world. More in the October newsletter...

By Wilma Johnson (Cobaw) LAURISTON, a small township 8 kms west of Kyneton situated by the Coliban River is a remind-er of Central Victoria’s strong Scottish heritage. Harsh economic conditions forced the exodus in the 19th century of many thousands of Scots who left their homeland in search of a better life in the in the Colonies and the New World. The original selection was named LAURISTON after a village on the outskirts of Edinburgh which is now part of central Edinburgh being redeveloped under the name of Quartermile. It is adjacent to a public park known as The Meadows, and home to the famous George Watson College, es-tablished under a different name in the mid 1760’s. After gold was found in Lauriston, Victoria, in 1864, a post office was established but it closed permanently in 1968.Kyneton water supply comes from Lauriston Reservoir.

A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father re-plied, "No, your mum was talking about her side of the family." Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business be-gan looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man ap-proached him and asked, "What are you do-ing?" "Playing a game," the boy replied. "What is your name?" the officer questioned. "Mind Your Own Business." Furious the po-liceman inquired, "Are you looking for trou-ble?!" The boy replied, "Why, yes." There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don't forget. They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. "You might want to write it down," she said. The husband said, "No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream." She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. "Write it down," she told him, and again he said, "No, no, I can remember: you

want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream." Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. "Write it down," she told her husband and again he said, "No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top." So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and ba-con. The old wife stares at the plate for a mo-ment, then looks at her husband and asks, "Where's the toast?" An Amish husband, wife and son travel to the city on vacation. They visit a shopping mall and while the mother is shopping, the father and son are standing in awe in front of an ele-vator (having no idea what it is). As they watch, an elderly lady walks into the strange silver doors and the doors close. The father and son watch as the numbers go up, and then back down. When the doors open, a beautiful young woman walks out. The father leans over and whispers to the son, "Son, go get your mother!" It’s a sunny morning in the Big Forest and the Bear family is just waking up. Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the ta-ble. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he squeaks. Father Bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl. It is also empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he roars. Mother Bear sticks her head out the kitchen door and yells, "For Pete's sake, how many times do we have to go through this? It was Mother Bear who go up first. It was Moth-er Bear who woke everybody else in the house up. It was Mother Bear who unloaded the dish-washer from last night and put everything away. It was Mother Bear who went out into the cold early morning air to fetch the newspa-per. It was Mother Bear who set the table. It was Mother Bear who put the cat out, cleaned the litter box and filled the cat's water and food dish. And now that you've decided to come down stairs and grace me with your presence, listen good because I'm only going to say this one more time: I haven't made the bloody porridge yet!"
