Scandinavia is home to a rich musical history, and this concert includes Romantic era composers from three Nordic lands – Sweden’s Hugo Alfvén, Norway’s Edvard Grieg, and Finland’s Jan Silbelius. Each work on our program displays a distinctive style and attachment to the composer’s homeland. This concert introduces our audience to Sibelius’s youthful First Symphony – the first in the composer’s towering and highly personal symphonic legacy.
INGER-KRISTINE RIBERNorwegian born pianist Inger-Kristine Riber joins the Sammamish Symphony in Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto. Riber has established herself as an active soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician, winning numerous artistic scholarships and grants. Riber will perform with the Norwegian ensemble BIT20 for a debut performance at the Ultima Festival in Oslo and on the main stage of the New Opera House in Oslo in the fall of 2013.

The Great Mass in C minor by Mozart is his most accomplished religious work. Composed in 1783, after a vow made to his father to write a sacred piece, its rich choral range, dramatic style, and beautiful airs for the soloists make it one of the monuments of the Classical era.

“Sounds and ideas hang in the air, I am gulping
and overeating, and can barely manage to scribble
them on paper. The transitions are good on the
‘promenade’. I want to work more quickly and
reliably. My physiognomy can be seen in the
interludes. So far I think it’s well turned... Ideas,
melodies come to me of their own accord, like
a banquet of music I can hardly manage to put
them down on paper fast enough.”Modest Mussorgsky, June 1874,
written while composing Pictures.

A tribute to a departed artist, Pictures at an Exhibition, has become
one of the most recorded and performed showpieces of the orchestral repertoire.
Originally composed as a grand work for piano by Russian composer Modest
Mussorgsky, the suite intrigued musicians for decades thereafter to try their
hand at turning the black-and-white of the piano keys into the full color of the
symphony orchestra. Maurice Ravel’s orchestration far outstrips all others in
its brilliance and sheer ingenuity – and in turn has been the inspiration for still
further rescoring efforts, including rock band, brass ensemble, acoustic guitar,
and massed accordions. However, Ravel’s arrangement remains the best-known
guide to Mussorgsky’s picture collection.
The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra is proud to support young musicians in our community through our Annual Youth Concerto Competition. This event provides area high school students the opportunity to compete individually before a panel of professional judges. The winner performs a solo work with the symphony in June. The symphony also encourages music student participation throughout our concert season and is dedicated to providing educational outreach that promotes a lifelong passion for musicianship and instrumental performance.
