About the CAmp
Now in its 8th year, Straight Ahead Jazz Camp offers five days of innovative, hands-on sessions led by professional jazz musicians and expert clinicians who will educate, challenge, and inspire. Created for adults and students ages 18 and up, the camp provides, educators, music lovers and musicians of all levels, with an opportunity to grow learn and connect. This year features regina carter, stefon harris, Dee alexander, slide hampton and Victor goines; five special guests who will jam with participants and share their insights and knowledge through lectures and workshops.
Additionally, the week-long camp includes sessions with renowned musicians and music educators Dr. Wes, Jose Diaz, tomeka reid, Dr. rosita sands, Willie Pickens, geof bradfield, greg Ward, Victor garcia, Pharez Whitted, bobbi Wilsyn and others!

Monday: Victor goines Saxophonist and clarinetist Victor Goines is widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers, composers, collaborators and educators in music today. Deeply committed to the field of jazz education, Mr. Goines is the Northwestern University Artistic Director for the Jazz Studies program, Education Consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center and has conducted master classes, clinics, workshops and lectures nationwide.
tuesday: sLiDe haMPton Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Slide Hampton’s career is among the most distinguished in jazz, performing with and composing and arranging for Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Barry Harris, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Max Roach, and touring with his octet in the 60s, which included stellar horn players Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, and George Coleman. Mr. Hampton was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2005.
Wednesday: Dee aLexanDer Vocalist Dee Alexander’s talent spans every music genre, from Gospel to R&B, from Blues to Neo-Soul. Yet her true heart and soul are experienced in their purest form when she performs jazz. Equally adept in mainstream swing and outer-fringe experimentation, big-band jazz, and small-group fare, Alexander stands as a jazz vocalist for all occasions who has received critical acclaim for performances at festivals across the United States and around the world.
thursday: regina carter For Regina Carter, the violin isn’t merely an improvisational vehicle. It’s a passport to unexpected realms, a Rosetta stone that unlocks the door to a myriad of cultures and worlds. Violin virtuoso Regina Carter is considered the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. Winner of a coveted 2006 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship for “showing exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work.” Ms. Carter is also a Resident Artistic Director at SF JAZZ.
friday: stefon harris Jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris is one of the most important young artists currently at the forefront of new music. Much in demand as a star sideman, Harris has played with many jazz luminaries including Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, Kurt Elling, David Sanchez and Christian Scott, in addition to releasing several of his own critically well-regarded albums. He tours the world with is band Blackout and teaches at New York University.

Music Department, Columbia College ChicagoThis session presents an introduction to the work for the Center for Black Music Research; a research unit
of Columbia College founded in 1983. Unlike other research institutions that focus on a single genre, the Center’s collection is recognized for its broad scope and role in contributing to an understanding of the diasporal unities that connect the musics created by peoples of African descent. It is also one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of print and sound materials available.

J&D brings American democracy to life, enriches the study and teaching of U.S. history, government, civics and culture, and inspires youth to become active, positive contributors to their communities. Now in its 8th year, Straight Ahead Jazz Camp offers five days of innovative, hands-on sessions led by professional jazz musicians and expert clinicians who will educate, challenge, and inspire. Created for adults and students ages 18 and up, the camp provides, educators, music lovers and musicians of all levels, with an opportunity to grow learn and connect. This year features regina carter, stefon harris, Dee alexander, slide hampton and Victor goines; five special guests who will jam with participants and share their insights and knowledge through lectures and workshops.
Additionally, the week-long camp includes sessions with renowned musicians and music educators Dr. Wes, Jose Diaz, tomeka reid, Dr. rosita sands, Willie Pickens, geof bradfield, greg Ward, Victor garcia, Pharez Whitted, bobbi Wilsyn and others!

Monday: Victor goines Saxophonist and clarinetist Victor Goines is widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers, composers, collaborators and educators in music today. Deeply committed to the field of jazz education, Mr. Goines is the Northwestern University Artistic Director for the Jazz Studies program, Education Consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center and has conducted master classes, clinics, workshops and lectures nationwide.
tuesday: sLiDe haMPton Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Slide Hampton’s career is among the most distinguished in jazz, performing with and composing and arranging for Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Barry Harris, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Max Roach, and touring with his octet in the 60s, which included stellar horn players Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, and George Coleman. Mr. Hampton was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2005.
Wednesday: Dee aLexanDer Vocalist Dee Alexander’s talent spans every music genre, from Gospel to R&B, from Blues to Neo-Soul. Yet her true heart and soul are experienced in their purest form when she performs jazz. Equally adept in mainstream swing and outer-fringe experimentation, big-band jazz, and small-group fare, Alexander stands as a jazz vocalist for all occasions who has received critical acclaim for performances at festivals across the United States and around the world.
thursday: regina carter For Regina Carter, the violin isn’t merely an improvisational vehicle. It’s a passport to unexpected realms, a Rosetta stone that unlocks the door to a myriad of cultures and worlds. Violin virtuoso Regina Carter is considered the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. Winner of a coveted 2006 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship for “showing exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work.” Ms. Carter is also a Resident Artistic Director at SF JAZZ.
friday: stefon harris Jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris is one of the most important young artists currently at the forefront of new music. Much in demand as a star sideman, Harris has played with many jazz luminaries including Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, Kurt Elling, David Sanchez and Christian Scott, in addition to releasing several of his own critically well-regarded albums. He tours the world with is band Blackout and teaches at New York University.
