First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2020
Entrance Antiphon To you, I lift up my soul, O my God.
In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me;
and let none who hope in you be put to shame.
Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father, Amen.
Isaiah 63:16-17,19;64:2-7 You, LORD, are our father, our redeemer you are named forever. Why do you let us wander, O LORD, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage. Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, with the mountains quaking before you, while you wrought awesome deeds we could not hope for, such as they had not heard of from of old. No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him. Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways! Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful; all of us have become like unclean people, all our good deeds are like polluted rags; we have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like the wind.
There is none who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to cling to you; for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us up to our guilt. Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 80 Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face
and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hearken, from your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power, and come to save us.
Once again, O LORD of hosts,
look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine,
and protect what your right hand has planted the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
May your help be with the man of your right hand,
with the son of man whom you yourself made strong. Then we will no more withdraw from you;
give us new life, and we will call upon your name.
I Corinthians 1:3-9 Brothers and sisters: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all
his holy Church.
Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Mystery of Faith We proclaim your Death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
When we eat this Bread and drink this cup,
we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
Save us, Savior of the world,
for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
Communion Antiphon
The Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth shall yield its increase.
Scripture readings and prayers provided
by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Mark 13:33-37 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and in-visible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the On-ly Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made consub-stantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who pro-ceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

This Week’s Liturgy
This is both Thanksgiving Weekend 2020 and the First Sunday of Advent 2020. Although it received very little notice this year, probably due to the pandemic, 2020 was also the seventy-fifth anniversary of the
end of the Second World War. Franklin D. Roosevelt was our nation’s President during that war. He proclaimed that the war aims of the United States were four in number. Our country was committed to fighting for The Four Freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear. The great American painter and illustrator of American culture, Norman Rockwell, portrayed each freedom in his unique style. Those Four Freedoms posters were very symbolic of our nation’s struggle three-quarters of a century ago. The Greatest Generation, who brought us through those war years, is quickly disappearing. But those Four Freedoms—and the hope for their fulfillment in our time and place—should not be forgotten. Another new year in the Church’s life reminds us that there is work yet to be done: those in want must be fed, those oppressed must be freed to speak out, all should be permitted to worship in their own way, and those who live in terror should be comforted. The Four Freedoms sound like a modern-day Four Beatitudes. Although Thanksgiving 2020 may not have come up to our usual expectations and our family customs may not have been closely observed this year, we do give thanks for those who have gone before us, for the freedoms that are ours and for those who sacrificed and preserved those freedoms for us, for this great nation, for our Catholic faith, and for those who are today’s Greatest Generation in fighting the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
* * * * * Several weeks back, I asked you to drop off a Christmas card with greetings for armed forces who will be deployed for the next nine months and will “miss Christmas” at home. In turn, I received this appreciation letter last week: “Thank you, St. Charles, for supporting our Christmas Card Project. We received 8,131 cards and sent them to four ships: USS San Diego, USS Makin Island, USS Somerset, and USS Comstock. In addition, cards were sent to bases in Okinawa and South Korea, So many wrote beautiful words of appreciation! There were also heartwarming messages from children accompanied by delightful drawings. Your overwhelming response will warm many hearts!” Here’s a Great Big Tip of the St. Charles Appreciation Hat to St. Charles Education Foundation Board Chairman and Finance Council member John Kedzior, John sent grant applications to the O’Donnell Foundation and to the McVeen Charitable Trust. Both were granted and we received a total of $100,000 in grant money. The grant requests were very specific and we are required to use the money for our elemen-tary school facilities, We are looking into the possibility of air-conditioning the New School Building with the grant funds, John Kedzior has secured major grants for our parish in prior years. Those grants have given us long-lasting and maintenance-free concrete playgrounds and parking lots! Many thanks, John Kedzior!
Merici Chapel… This is the First Sunday of Advent, November 29. We have 26 days to prepare our hearts and souls to celebrate the birth of Jesus. How many hours will you spend on your computer ordering gifts for family and friends? ...Now, how many times will you stop by Merici Chapel and visit Jesus and pray and talk to Him?

SStt.. CChhaarrlleess BBoorrrroommeeoo22002200 AAddvveenntt GGiivviinngg TTrreeeeShare your blessings with someone in need this holiday season through our Parish Advent Giving Tree. Our giving tree supports four organizations committed to promoting life values.
This year, the pandemic requires that we modify the Advent Giving Tree. Out of concern for the safety & health of our charitable organizations and parishioners, we are requesting donations in the form of GIFT CARDS ONLY.
If you plan to participate, simply purchase a gift card for one of the beneficiaries listed. Place your gift card in an envelope with the name of the intended organization clearly printed on the outside. Then, bring your gift card by Sunday, December 20 to the Parish Office (M-F, 8am-8pm; Sat., 8am-5pm & Sun., 8am-1pm). Please do not leave gift cards in Church.
To save you a trip, you can purchase gift cards in the Parish Office. In that way, you will help the needy, and a few cents per card will help St. Charles School. Monetary donations may also be dropped off at the Parish Office, or made directly via each organization’s website. Call the Parish Office (440) 884-3030 with any questions.
