F P ’ D As 2019 Draws to a Close – Let’s Sing a ‘Te Deum’!

Dear Friends, For many years, the custom of the church has been to gather, on the eve of a New Year, in order to give thanks to God for all of the blessings received by His providential care over the previous year. Specifically, the faithful can gather to sing the Te Deum, which is held by many as the hymn of thanksgiving par excellence. Concerning its origins, until recent past the Te Deum was titled: “the hymn of Ss. Ambrose and Augustine”. Traditionally authorship credit has gone to Saints Ambrose and Augustine, however modern scholars hold that it was most likely written by another fourth-century bishop, St. Nicetas of Remisiana. Tradition holds that they composed it as if by divine inspiration, immediately after the baptism of the latter at the Easter vigil of 387. “Te Deum laudamus!”, St. Ambrose exclaims, to which St. Augustine replies, “Te Dominum confitemur!” One indisputable fact is that the church has sung this on New Year’s eve for centuries. Why? Well, just like we should not end the day without first giving thanks to God for all the blessings received; so too, we should not end a year without turning to the Him and to thank Him for all of the benefits received throughout the year. By looking back and giving thanks, it also prepares us for the future. Hence the Church places on our lips the ancient hymn Te Deum. It is a hymn acknowledging that God’s goodness extends to all orders of creation and to all generations. We rightly and solemnly celebrate that two thousand years ago “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father" (Jn 1: 14). This is why the hymn of our praise and gratitude is joins in a chorus of universal and metaphysical proportions when we say, “You are God: we praise you, . . . to you all angels, all the powers of heaven, . . . the glorious company of apostles, . . . fellowship of prophets, . . . white-robed army of martyrs praise you.” Moreover, the Church, so eternally focused, has granted a plenary indulgence to the public recitation of the Te Deum, “on the final day of the year, to offer thanks to God for gifts received throughout the course of the entire year. (Manual of Indulgences, 26. §1, 2°: EI 1986, conc. 60.) And just to make sure that you understand what we are speaking about in reference to indulgences, an indulgence has the purpose of remitting the punishment that sin deserves. Holy Mother Church has the privileged right to do this given the “infinitely precious merits of Jesus, Divine Redeemer of the human race, and their abundant progeny, the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, have been entrusted to Christ’s Church as an unfailing treasury, that they may be applied to the remission of sins and of the consequences of sin, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing which the Founder of the Church himself conferred on Peter and the other Apostles, and through them on their successors, the Supreme Pontiffs and Bishops. This remission is given primarily, and in the case of mortal sins necessarily, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.” (Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, fourth edition (1999) Is there a better way in which we can cross the threshold from one year to another? I doubt it. We plan to spend time in Eucharistic adoration starting at 10PM, we will sing the hymn of thanksgiving par excellence, the Te Deum, followed by the act of thanksgiving par excellence, the Eucharist. All of this being done in thanksgiving to God for the gifts and blessings of this past year and starting a new year free from the punishment of sin. True gratitude embraces the whole past: every time we look at everything as God sees it, even our own faults of the past can be transformed into a happy fault, if we have a look of faith. When all our past is gratefully observed we can be like Peter, who when forgiven, his very fault was for him a new source of fidelity. May Our Lady of Peace continue to intercede for us this upcoming year and may she pray for us, Fr. Brian P.S. – Another plenary indulgence can be obtained for the faithful who recite or solemnly sing “the Veni Creator, either on the first day of the year to implore divine assistance for the course of the whole year…” (Manual of Indulgences, §1, 1°: EI 1986, conc. 61.)

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Page 5 PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR NEW YEAR What is a Plenary Indulgence? A Plenary Indulgence is the full remission of temporal punishment due for sins

which have already been forgiven. Indulgences can be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.

Who Can Gain A Plenary Indulgence? To be capable of gaining an indulgence for oneself, it is required that one be baptized (not excommunicated), in the state of grace and detached from all sin at least at the completion of the prescribed works (written in the conditions below), and a subject of the one granting the indulgence.

Conditions for gaining the Plenary Indulgence: Excluding all attachment to sin, even venial sin Sacramental Confession and Holy Communion (within 8 days) Prayer for the Intentions of the Holy Father Recitation or solemn singing of the Te Deum (written below), on the final day of the year (Dec. 31st), to offer

thanks to God for gifts received throughout the course of the entire year. Recitation or solemn singing of the Veni Creator (written below), on the first day of the year (Jan. 1st) to

implore divine assistance for the course of the whole year.

(to be publicly recited/sung on December 31st)

You are God, we praise you: You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are the eternal Father: All creation worships you. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you: Father of majesty unbounded, Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, And the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the King of Glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free, you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb. You overcame the sting of death, And opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God’s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, Bought with the price of your own blood, And bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. V: Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. R: Govern and uphold them now and always. V: Day by day we bless you. R: We praise your name forever. V: Keep us today, Lord, from all sin. R: Have mercy on us, Lord have Mercy. V: Lord, show us your Love and Mercy. R: for we put our trust in you. V: In you, Lord, is our hope: R: and we shall never hope in vain. Amen.

(to be publicly recited/sung on January 1st)

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O comforter, to Thee we cry, O heavenly gift of God Most High, O fount of life and fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known; Thou, finger of God's hand we own; Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue with power imbue. Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts o'erflow with love; with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply. Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside. Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest. Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

Page 6 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine December 29, 2019 PARISH REGISTRATION Are You a Registered Parishioner? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace parish. Three main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? 2. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this may greatly delay the process for Sacrament prep. 3. Letters of Recommendation There are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter. Anyone, regardless of where they live is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork cannot not be processed within the 3 months. Visit the parish office, call 408-988-4585, or email [email protected] for a registration form.

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS

Whether it be Time, Treasure, or Talent, all Christian stewards must consider prayerfully the gifts they have received from God, and they should make a decision (in advance from the "first fruits" instead of what is left over after obligations have been met) about what will be given. We give back out of LOVE, and in THANKSGIVING, a portion of every gift that has been given to us. Time is one of the most precious gifts we have. How we spend our time is one of the most important indications of what is important in our lives. Your time is YOUR gift to share. Please contact our parish office if you would like to volunteer! Your weekly offerings to the parish are what keep the lights on, the grass mowed, the flowers tended, and allow us to provide weekly service to parishioners. Your one-time gifts allow for special liturgical events and speakers to reach out to the community and maintain special programs. Year-End Gifts as Tax Deductions may be a good option for you. Federal and state laws on income and inheritance taxes encourage charitable giving. All donations to the ADA are fully tax deductible (if you have not completed your pledges, please turn them in by December 31st).
