R E F L E C T I O N S
The central things of Christian worship are not so much things that we do as events where God has promised to act. There is no “temple” in the city (Revelation 21:22). God and the Lamb take its place. That is, our praise, our worship, our action, our sacrifice, even our seeking, are not the heart of Christian worship. God’s presence, God’s gift, the very fruit of the tree of life, is. Bath, table, prayer, and word are important to “every seeking soul” because God is there, wiping away tears, giving life. ~ Gordon Lathrop The table fellowship of Jesus with his disciples has manifested itself throughout his ministry as a teaching and eating fellowship (cf. Luke 22:14-38). The Church will now continue this table fellowship with Jesus, for Jesus will be present in the Church through his teaching and his meals (cf. Acts 2:42). ~ Arthur A. Just, Jr. The apostles’ teaching; the common life of those who believed; the breaking of bread; and the prayers. These four go together. You can’t separate them or leave one out, without damage to the whole thing. When no attention is given to teaching, and to constant, lifelong Christian learning, people quickly revert to the worldview or mindset of the surrounding culture, and end up with their minds shaped by whichever social pressures are most persuasive, with Jesus somewhere around as a pale influence or memory. Where people ignore the common life of the Christian family (the technical term often used is ‘fellowship’, which is more than friendship but not less), they become isolated, and often find it difficult to sustain a living faith. Where people no longer share regularly in ‘the breaking of bread’ (the early Christian term for the simple meal that took them back to the Upper Room ‘in remembrance of Jesus’), they are failing to raise the flag which says “Jesus’ death and resurrection are the center of everything”. And whenever people do all these things but neglect prayer, they are quite simply forgetting that Christians are supposed to be heaven-and-earth people. Prayer makes no sense whatever - unless heaven and earth are designed to be joined together, and we can share in that already. ~ N. T. Wright

O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
q P R E L U D E Come to the Feast
Go to the highways and hedges, go to the farthest of fields Go and compel the sick and the well, for our Father’s house will be filled
Go to the streets of the city, bring in the crippled and blind All who would taste this banquet of grace, must come and waste no more time
Come to the feast, Come to the table, the great and the least, the rich and the poor Come to the feast, Come to the table. Come and hunger no more
In the robe of the lamb you’ll be covered, dressed in his pure righteousness For all of your guilt, his blood it was spilt, so come by your Father, be blessed
p C A L L T O W O R S H I P PSALM 107:1-9
LEADER: Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, PEOPLE: for his steadfast love endures forever! LEADER: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and
gathered in from the lands, LEFT: from the east and from the west, RIGHT: from the north and from the south. LEADER: Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry
and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. PEOPLE: Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their
distress. LEADER: He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank
the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! PEOPLE: For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
p Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken
q C O N F E S S I O N
LEADER: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God together by praying— UNISON: Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.
Almighty Creator, have mercy upon us. Holy Spirit have mercy upon us. Lord, let your mercy be showed upon us; as we put our trust in you. Amen.
Please take a moment to silently confess your individual sins.
q Assurance of Pardon JOEL 2:12-13
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
p T H A N K S G I V I N G
LEADER: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; PEOPLE: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

p G O S P E L MATTHEW 10:24-39 24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
LEADER: The Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
p C R E E D UNISON: We believe that God is the King;
and that we will praise His name for ever and ever. We believe that the LORD is good to all; in His common grace He has compassion on all He has made. We believe that the LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. That through His irresistible grace the LORD’s people call on Him in truth. He hears their cry and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. We believe that we have been made to praise the LORD; we will speak of His mighty acts seen in the Birth, Life, Death and Resurrection of Christ. We believe that the LORD’s Kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, a dominion that endures through all generations.
q P R A Y E R S O F T H E P E O P L E Using short sentence prayers, praise God for the sure foundation of His loving kindness.
q C A T E C H I S M From the New City Catechism #25
LEADER: Does Christ’s death mean all our sins can be forgiven? PEOPLE: Yes, because Christ’s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin,
God graciously imputes Christ’s righteousness to us as if it were our own and will remember our sins no more.

q P R O C L A M A T I O N ACTS 2:42-47 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.
q The First Followers: The First Fellowship, Part 2 Rev. Luke D. Le Duc Manuscripts of the sermon are available in the Narthex.
p S A C R A M E N T LEADER: The Lord be with you! PEOPLE: And also with you. LEADER: Lift up your hearts! PEOPLE: We lift them up to the Lord. LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God! PEOPLE: It is right to give him our thanks and praise. LEADER: It is a right, good, proper, and joyful thing, at all times, and in all places to
give you thanks, Lord God. We join our voices with the angels and archangels and all the company of heaven who forever sing this song:
p Sanctus
Communion is an opportunity for all of us to seek the Lord. It is an occasion for baptized Christians to be strengthened by our Savior. All who trust in Christ alone, belong to (and are in good standing with) a church that embraces the Gospel, live at peace with their neighbor, and seek strength to live more faithfully are welcome to eat this meal with us. If you are not a Christian, please consider spending this time in prayer using the communion prayers printed in the back of the bulletin. Gluten free bread is available. Prepackaged cups are used for the grape juice and clear cups for the wine.

q Prayer
UNISON: We do not presume to come to your Table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercies. Amen.
LEADER: And it was in mercy towards us that our heavenly Father gave his only Son to suffer death on the Cross for our redemption. As it is written: On the night Christ was betrayed he took Bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for you, preserve your body and soul unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your heart by faith with thanksgiving.

Chorus1. 2, 3.
LEADER: Then in the same way, after supper Jesus took the Cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for you, preserve your body and soul unto everlasting life. Drink this in remembrance that Christ’s Blood was shed for you, and be thankful.
p Prayer of Thanksgiving
PEOPLE: Everliving God, thank you for feeding us with these holy mysteries—the spiritual food of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Assist us with your grace, that we may continue in holy fellowship with you, and do all such good works that you have prepared for us to walk in; all this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
p Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
