result in harmful exposure to microwave energy. It is important not to defeat or tamper withthe safety interlocks.

C O N S U M E R L I M I T E D W A R R A N T YSHARP ELECTRONICS CORPORATION warrants to the first consumer purchaser that this Sharp brandproduct (the “Product”), when shipped in its original container, will be free from defective workmanship andmaterials, and agrees that it will, at its option, either repair the defect or replace the defective Product or partthereof with a new or remanufactured equivalent at no charge to the purchaser for parts or labor for theperiod(s) set forth below.

This warranty does not apply to any appearance items of the Product nor to the additional excluded item(s)set forth below nor to any Product the exterior of which has been damaged or defaced, which has beensubjected to improper voltage or other misuse, abnormal service or handling, or which has been altered ormodified in design or construction.

When using electrical appliances basic safety precautions should be followed, including the following:

WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, electric shock, fire, injury to persons or exposure toexcessive microwave energy:

1. Read all instructions before using theappliance.

2. Read and follow the specific “PRECAU-TIONS TO AVOID POSSIBLE EXPO-SURE TO EXCESSIVE MICROWAVEENERGY” on inside front cover.

3. This appliance must be grounded. Connectonly to properly grounded outlet. See“GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS” onpage 3.

4. Install or locate this appliance only in ac-cordance with the provided installationinstructions.

5. Some products such as whole eggs andsealed containers —for example, closed glassjars — are able to explode and should not beheated in this oven.

6. Use this appliance only for its intended useas described in this manual. Do not usecorrosive chemicals or vapors in this appli-ance. This type of oven is specificallydesigned to heat, cook or dry food. It is notdesigned for industrial or laboratory use.

7. As with any appliance, close supervision isnecessary when used by children.

8. Do not operate this appliance if it has adamaged cord or plug, if it is not workingproperly or if it has been damaged or dropped.

16. To reduce the risk of fire in the oven cavity:

a. Do not overcook food. Carefully attendappliance when paper, plastic or othercombustible materials are placed insidethe oven to facilitate cooking.

b. Remove wire twist-ties from paper orplastic bags before placing bag in oven.

c. If materials inside the oven ignite,keep oven door closed, turn oven offand disconnect the power cord orshut off power at the fuse or circuitbreaker panel.

d. Do not use the cavity for storage pur-poses. Do not leave paper products,cooking utensils or food in the cavitywhen not in use.

17. Liquids, such as water, coffee or tea are ableto be overheated beyond the boiling pointwithout appearing to be boiling. Visiblebubbling or boiling when the container isremoved from the microwave oven is notalways present. THIS COULD RESULT INVERY HOT LIQUIDS SUDDENLY BOILINGOVER WHEN A SPOON OR OTHERUTENSIL IS INSERTED INTO THE LIQUID.To reduce the risk of injury to persons:

a. Do not overheat the liquid.

b. Stir the liquid both before and halfwaythrough heating it.

c. Do not use straight-sided containerswith narrow necks. Use a wide-mouthedcontainer.

d. After heating, allow the container tostand in the microwave oven at leastfor 20 seconds before removing thecontainer.

e. Use extreme care when inserting aspoon or other utensil into the container.

This appliance must be grounded. This oven is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with a ground-ing plug. It must be plugged into a wall receptacle that is properly installed and grounded in accordance withthe National Electrical Code and local codes and ordinances. In the event of an electrical short circuit,grounding reduces risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current.

WARNING – Improper use of the grounding plug can result in a risk of electric shock.

Electrical RequirementsThe electrical requirements are a 120 volt 60 Hz, AC only, 15 amp. or moreprotected electrical supply. It is recommended that a separate circuit serv-ing only this appliance be provided.The oven is equipped with a 3-prong grounding plug. It must be plugged into awall receptacle that is properly installed and grounded. Should you only have a2-prong outlet, have a qualified electrician install a correct wall receptacle.A 3-prong adapter may be purchased and used temporarily if local codesallow. Follow package directions.A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce risk of becoming entangledin or tripping over a longer cord.

Extension CordIf it is necessary to use an extension cord, use only a 3-wire extension cordthat has a 3-blade grounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that will acceptthe plug on the microwave oven. The marked rating of the extension cordshould be AC 115-120 volt, 15 amp. or more.Be careful not to drape the cord over the countertop or table where it can bepulled on by children or tripped over accidentally.Notes:1. If you have any questions about the grounding or electrical in-

structions, consult a qualified electrician or service person.2. Neither Sharp nor the dealer can accept any liability for damage

to the oven or personal injury resulting from failure to observe thecorrect electrical connection procedures.

Radio or TV InterferenceShould there be any interference caused by the microwave oven to your radio or TV, check that themicrowave oven is on a different electrical circuit, relocate the radio or TV as far away from the oven asfeasible or check position and signal of receiving antenna.

Unpacking and Examining Your OvenRemove:1. all packing materials from inside the oven cav-

ity; however, DO NOT REMOVE THEWAVEGUIDE COVER, which is located on the

right cavity wall. Readenclosures and SAVEthe Operation Manual.2. the feature sticker, ifthere is one, from theoutside of the door.Check the oven for anydamage, such as mis-aligned or bent door,

damaged door seals and sealing surfaces, bro-ken or loose door hinges and latches and dentsinside the cavity or on the door. If there is anydamage, do not operate the oven and contact yourdealer or SHARP AUTHORIZED SERVICER.Choosing a Location for Your OvenYou will use the oven frequently so plan its loca-

It's wise, if possible, to havecounter space on at least one side of the oven.Allow at least 2 inches on the sides, top and atthe rear of the oven for air circulation. Do not placeor install the oven in any area where heat andsteam are generated; for example, next to orabove a conventional gas or electric range orabove a conventional wall oven. Heat and steammay damage the electronics or the mechanicalparts of the oven.

Built-in KitYour oven can be built into a cabinet or wall—notnear or above a heat source—using one of Sharp’sBuilt-in Kits, either the RK6S24 (silver) or theRK6K24 (black). The RK6S24 can be used witheither the R-630DSA or the R-630DWA. TheRK6K24 can be used with the R-630DKA. If yourdealer does not stock the kit, order directly by call-ing 1-800-642-2122 to have it sent to your address.The kit includes ducts and finish trim strips andeasy-to-follow instructions for installation as wellas the location of the power supply.

A good microwave cookbook is a valuable asset.Check it for microwave cooking principles, techniques,hints and recipes. See pages 25 and 26 for orderingthe Ultimate Accessory, the SHARP CAROUSEL MI-CROWAVE COOKBOOK.

NEVER use the oven without the turntable and supportnor turn the turntable over so that a large dish could beplaced in the oven. The turntable will turn both clock-wise and counterclockwise.

ALWAYS have food in the oven when it is on to absorbthe microwave energy.

• Puncture egg yolks before cookingto prevent “explosion”.

• Pierce skins of potatoes, apples,squash, hot dogs and sausages sothat steam escapes.

• Use specially bagged popcorn for themicrowave oven.

• Listen while popping corn for thepopping to slow to 1 or 2 seconds oruse special Popcorn.

• Transfer baby food to small dish andheat carefully, stirring often. Checktemperature before serving.

• Put nipples on bottles after heatingand shake thoroughly. “Wrist” testbefore feeding.

• Cut baked goods with filling afterheating to release steam and avoidburns.

• Stir liquids briskly before and afterheating to avoid “eruption”.

• Use deep bowl, when cooking liquidsor cereals, to prevent boilovers.

• Cook eggs in shells.

• Reheat whole eggs.

• Dry nuts or seeds in shells.

• Pop popcorn in regular brown bagsor glass bowls.

• Exceed maximum time on popcornpackage.

• Heat baby food in original jars.

• Heat disposable bottles.

• Heat bottles with nipples on.

• Heat or cook in closed glass jars orair tight containers.

• Can in the microwave as harmfulbacteria may not be destroyed.

• Deep fat fry.

• Dry wood, gourds, herbs or wet papers.

may hear the magnetron cycling on and off. It is normalfor the exterior of the oven to be warm to the touchwhen cooking or reheating.

Condensation is a normal part of microwave cooking.Room humidity and the moisture in food will influencethe amount of moisture that condenses in the oven.Generally, covered foods will not cause as much con-densation as uncovered ones. Vents on the oven backmust not be blocked.

The oven is for food preparation only. It should not beused to dry clothes or newspapers.

Your oven is rated 1100 watts by using the IEC TestProcedure. In using recipes or package directions,check food a minute or two before the minimum timeand add time accordingly.

ABOUT UTENSILS AND COVERINGSThe following coverings are ideal:

• Paper towels are good for covering foods for re-heating and absorbing fat while cooking bacon.

• Wax paper can be used for cooking andreheating.

• Plastic wrap that is specially marked for micro-wave use can be used for cooking and reheat-ing. DO NOT allow plastic wrap to touch food.Vent so steam can escape.

• Lids that are microwave-safe are a good choicebecause heat is kept near the food to hastencooking.

• Oven cooking bags are good for large meats orfoods that need tenderizing. DO NOT use metaltwist ties. Remember to slit bag so steam canescape.

How to use aluminum foil in your microwaveoven:

• Small flat pieces of aluminum foil placedsmoothly on the food can be used to shieldareas that are either defrosting or cooking tooquickly.

• Foil should not come closer than one inch to anysurface of the oven.

Should you have questions about utensils or coverings,check a good microwave cookbook or follow recipesuggestions.

ACCESSORIES There are many microwave accesso-ries available for purchase. Evaluate carefully beforeyou purchase so that they meet your needs. A micro-wave-safe thermometer will assist you in determiningcorrect doneness and assure you that foods havebeen cooked to safe temperatures. Sharp is notresponsible for any damage to the oven when acces-sories are used.

Children should be taught all safety precautions: usepotholders, remove coverings carefully, pay specialattention to packages that crisp food because theymay be extra hot.

Don’t assume that because a child has mastered onecooking skill he/she can cook everything.

Children need to learn that the microwave oven is nota toy. See page 23 for Child Lock feature.

It is not necessary to buy all new cookware. Manypieces already in your kitchen can be used success-fully in your new microwave oven. Make sure the uten-sil does not touch the interior walls during cooking.

Use these utensils for safe microwave cookingand reheating:

• glass ceramic (Pyroceram®), such asCorningware®.

• heat-resistant glass (Pyrex®)

• microwave-safe plastics

• paper plates

• microwave-safe pottery, stoneware andporcelain

• browning dish (Do not exceed recommendedpreheating time. Follow manufacturer'sdirections.)

These items can be used for short time reheat-ing of foods that have little fat or sugar in them:

• wood, straw, wicker

DO NOT USE• metal pans and bakeware• dishes with metallic trim• non-heat-resistant glass• non-microwave-safe plastics (margarine tubs)• recycled paper products• brown paper bags• food storage bags• metal twist-ties

Should you wish to check if a dish is safe formicrowaving, place the empty dish in the oven andmicrowave on HIGH for 30 seconds. A dish whichbecomes very hot should not be used.

ABOUT CHILDREN AND THE MICROWAVEChildren below the age of 7 should use the microwaveoven with a supervising person very near to them.Between the ages of 7 and 12, the supervising personshould be in the same room.

The child must be able to reach the oven comfortably;if not, he/she should stand on a sturdy stool.

At no time should anyone be allowed to lean or swingon the oven door.

ABOUT MICROWAVE COOKING• Arrange food carefully. Place thickest areas towards

outside of dish.

• Watch cooking time. Cook for the shortest amountof time indicated and add more as needed. Foodseverely overcooked can smoke or ignite.

• Cover foods while cooking. Check recipe or cook-book for suggestions: paper towels, wax paper,microwave plastic wrap or a lid. Covers preventspattering and help foods to cook evenly.

• Shield with small flat pieces of aluminum foil anythin areas of meat or poultry to prevent overcookingbefore dense, thick areas are cooked thoroughly.

• Stir foods from outside to center of dish once or twiceduring cooking, if possible.

• Turn foods over once during microwaving tospeed cooking of such foods as chicken and ham-burgers. Large items like roasts must be turned overat least once.

• Rearrange foods such as meatballs halfwaythrough cooking both from top to bottom and fromthe center of the dish to the outside.

• Add standing time. Remove food from oven andstir, if possible. Cover for standing time which allowsthe food to finish cooking without overcooking.

• Check for doneness. Look for signs indicating thatcooking temperatures have been reached.

Doneness signs include:

- Food steams throughout, not just at edge.

- Center bottom of dish is very hot to the touch.

- Poultry thigh joints move easily.

- Meat and poultry show no pinkness.

- Fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.

• Check foods to see that they are cooked to theUnited States Department of Agriculture'srecommended temperatures.

To test for doneness, insert a meat thermometer in athick or dense area away from fat or bone. NEVERleave the thermometer in the food during cooking,unless it is approved for microwave oven use.

• ALWAYS use potholders to prevent burns whenhandling utensils that are in contact with hot food.Enough heat from the food can transfer throughutensils to cause skin burns.

• Avoid steam burns by directing steam away fromthe face and hands. Slowly lift the farthest edge ofa dish's covering and carefully open popcorn andoven cooking bags away from the face.

• Stay near the oven while it's in use and checkcooking progress frequently so that there is nochance of overcooking food.

• NEVER use the cavity for storing cookbooks orother items.

• Select, store and handle food carefully to preserveits high quality and minimize the spread offoodborne bacteria.

• Keep waveguide cover clean. Food residue cancause arcing and/or fires.

• Use care when removing items from the oven sothat the utensil, your clothes or accessories do nottouch the safety door latches.

STARTTouch On

Sharp's Sensor is a semi-conductor device that detectsthe vapor (moisture and humidity) emitted from the foodas it heats. The sensor adjusts the cooking times andpower level for various foods and quantities.

Using Sensor Settings:1. After oven is plugged in, wait 2 minutes before us-

ing Sensor Cooking.

2. Be sure the exterior of the cooking container andthe interior of the oven are dry. Wipe off any mois-ture with a dry cloth or paper towel.

3. The oven works with foods at normal storage tem-perature. For example, popcorn would be at roomtemperature.

4. Any Sensor Cooking selection can be programmedwith More or Less Time Adjustment. See page 23.

5. More or less food than the quantity listed in the chartshould be cooked following the guidelines in any mi-crowave cookbook.

6. During the first part of Sensor Cooking, food namewill appear on the display. Do not open the ovendoor or touch STOP/Clear during this part of thecooking cycle. The measurement of vapor will beinterrupted. If this occurs, an error message willappear. To continue cooking, touch STOP/Clear andcook manually.

When the sensor detects the vapor emitted fromthe food, remainder of cooking time will appear.Door may be opened when remaining cookingtime appears on the display. At this time, you maystir or season food, as desired.

7. If the sensor does not detect vapor properly whenpopping popcorn, the oven will turn off, and the cor-rect time of day will be displayed. If the sensor doesnot detect vapor properly when cooking other foods,. ERROR will be displayed, and the oven will turn off.

8. Check food for temperature after cooking. If addi-tional time is needed, continue to cook manually.

9. Each food has a cooking hint. Touch Custom Helpwhen the HELP indicator is lighted in the display.

Covering Foods:Some foods work best when covered. Use the coverrecommended in the chart for these foods.

1. Casserole lid.

2. Plastic wrap: Use plastic wrap recommended formicrowave cooking. Cover dish loosely; allowapproximately 1/2 inch to remain uncovered to al-low steam to escape. Plastic wrap should not touchfood.

3. Wax paper: Cover dish completely; fold excesswrap under dish to secure. If dish is wider thanpaper, overlap two pieces at least one inch to cover.

Be careful when removing any covering to allowsteam to escape away from you.

Example 1: For Baked Potatoes or Sensor Reheat.

2 cups fresh cranberries 1/2 pint whipping cream, whipped or1 cup water 1 carton (8 ounces) non-dairy whipped topping3/4 cup sugar1 carton (3 ounces) orange flavored gelatin

1 Combine cranberries, water and sugar in a 2-quart casserole. Cover with wax paper. Microwave using SensorReheat Less. Drain cranberries and reserve liquid.

2 Add enough hot water to reserved liquid to make 2 cups. Stir the gelatin into hot liquid until it dissolves. Coverwith wax paper. Microwave using Sensor Reheat Less.

1 Place shrimp in 2-quart, covered casserole.

2 Microwave using Main Entrees: Fish or Seafood. Drain and set aside.

3 Combine tomato puree, tomato paste, basil, oregano, scallions, garlic, salt and pepper in 2-quart casserole.

4 Microwave using Sensor Reheat.

5 Combine sauce with cooked shrimp.

6 Serve sauce over cooked pasta. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.

Glazed Apple Slices Makes 6 to 8 servings

1/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup orange juice3 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 tablespoon cornstarch2 tablespoons apricot preserves 4 baking apples (about 1 1/2 pounds), peeled and1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg sliced into 8 pieces each1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons chopped green pistachios1/2 cup sugar

1 Combine brown sugar, margarine and apricot preserves in a small bowl. Microwave at HIGH (100%) untilmargarine melts and preserves soften, 45 seconds to 1 minute. Stir in nutmeg, salt, sugar, orange juice andcornstarch. Microwave at HIGH (100%) until thickened, 4 to 6 minutes, stirring several times.

2 Arrange apple slices in a large microwave serving dish. Spread hot sauce over apples. Cover well with ventedplastic wrap. Microwave using Vegetables: Fresh Soft. Allow to cool 5 minutes before serving.

3 Sprinkle with pistachios. Serve alone or over vanilla ice cream or sponge cake.

Herb-and-Cheese Chicken Breasts Makes 8 servings

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened2 tablespoons milk2 green onions, minced1 tablespoon minced parsley1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves

1 In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, milk, green onions, parsley, thyme, and garlic.

2 Push fingers between skin and meat of each chicken breast to form a pocket. Spread an equal amount of creamcheese mixture in each pocket.

3 On waxed paper, combine bread crumbs and paprika. Dip chicken breasts into melted butter, then roll in sea-soned bread crumbs to coat.

4 In 8-inch x 8-inch, baking dish, place chicken and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave using Main Entrees:Bone-in Chicken Pieces.

1 Cut each potato lengthwise into 4 equal wedges. Place potato wedges into 10-inch square casserole. Tosspotatoes with oil to coat well.

2 In small bowl, combine remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over potatoes.

3 Cover potatoes with wax paper. Microwave using Baked Potatoes setting. Rearrange potatoes when time ap-pears on display. Let stand, covered, 5 minutes.

Hearty Turkey Chili Makes 6 servings

1 pound ground turkey1 large onion, chopped2 garlic cloves, minced2 tablespoons chili powder1 tablespoon cumin

1 In 3-quart casserole, place ground turkey, onion, garlic, chili powder and cumin. Mix thoroughly.

2 Cover and microwave using Main Entrees: Ground Meat. Stir and drain.

3 To meat mixture, add zucchini, tomatoes with their liquid, tomato paste, beans and corn. Microwave, covered,using Sensor Reheat.

Creole Corn Makes 6 servings

2 teaspoons oil1/2 cup chopped celery1/2 cup chopped green pepper16 ounce can tomatoes4 ounce can mushroom stem and pieces, drained

1 In 2-quart casserole, combine oil, celery, green pepper, tomatoes, mushrooms, sugar, onion powder, garlic pow-der, salt and pepper.

2 Microwave using Sensor Reheat. Set aside.

3 In covered, 1-quart casserole, microwave corn using Vegetables: Frozen Vegetables. Drain.

4 Combine corn and vegetable-seasoning mixture. Stir and serve immediately.

Savory Flounder Fillets Makes 4 servings

3/4 cup of corn flake crumbs3 tablespoons chopped parsley2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

1 On waxed paper, combine corn flake crumbs, parsley, lemon peel and paprika. Dip fillets in beaten egg, thencoat with crumb mixture.

2 Place fish in a covered, microwave-safe, baking dish. Microwave using Main Entrees: Fish or Seafood.

MANUAL DEFROSTIf the food that you wish to defrost is not listed on theSuperDefrost or CompuDefrost Charts or is above orbelow the limits in the “Amount” column on theSuperDefrost or CompuDefrost Charts, you need to de-frost manually.

You can defrost any frozen food, either raw or previ-ously cooked, by using Power Level 3. See page 9.Estimate defrosting time and press 3 for 30% when youselect the power level.

For either raw or previously cooked frozen food therule of thumb is approximately 4 minutes per pound.For example, defrost 4 minutes for 1 pound of frozenspaghetti sauce.

Always stop the oven periodically to remove or sepa-rate the portions that are defrosted. If food is notdefrosted at the end of the estimated defrostingtime, program the oven in 1 minute increments onPower Level 3 until totally defrosted.

When using plastic containers from the freezer, defrostonly long enough to remove from the plastic in orderto place in a microwave-safe dish.

MULTIPLE SEQUENCECOOKINGYour oven can be programmed for up to 4 automaticcooking sequences, switching from one power levelsetting to another automatically.

Sometimes cooking directions tell you to start on onepower level and then change to a different powerlevel. Your oven can do this automatically.

• Suppose you want to cook roast beef for 5 minutes at100% and then continue to cook for 30 minutes at 50%.

NOTE:

1. Note time it takes for frequently used foods andprogram that time in the future.

2. Touch START/Touch On within 3 minutes after cook-ing, opening and closing the door or touching theSTOP/Clear.

ExteriorThe outside surface is painted. Clean the outside withmild soap and water; rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Donot use any type of household or abrasive cleaner.

Door/Touch Control PanelCare should be taken in cleaning the door/touch con-trol panel. If the door/touch control panel becomessoiled, open the oven door before cleaning.Wipe the window on both sides with a damp cloth toremove any spills or spatters. Wipe the front side of thedoor (including the touch control panel) with a clothdampened slightly with water only. Dry with a soft cloth.Do not scrub or use any sort of chemical cleaners. Metalparts will be easier to maintain if wiped frequently witha damp cloth. Avoid the use of spray and other harshcleaners as they may stain, streak or dull the door sur-face. InteriorCleaning is easy because little heat is generated to theinterior surfaces; therefore, there is no baking and set-ting of spills or spattering. Odor RemovalOccasionally, a cooking odor may remain in the oven.To remove, combine 1 cup water, grated peel and juiceof 1 lemon and several whole cloves in a 2-cup glassmeasuring cup. Boil for several minutes using 100%power. Allow to set in oven until cool. Wipe interior witha soft cloth.

Turntable/Turntable SupportThe turntable and turntable support can be removedfor easy cleaning. Wash them in mild, sudsy water; forstubborn stains use a mild cleanser and a non-abra-sive scouring sponge. They are also dishwasher-proof.Use upper rack of dishwasher.
