"Key Performance Measurements Key Performance Measurements - Throughput, Inventory, Operating Expenses. Throughput - Rate at which the system generates money through sales, not through production. Goods are not considered an asset until sold. Inventory - Money invested in goods that the firm intends to sell or material that the firm intends to convert into salable items. Operating Expenses - All the money the firm spends converting Inventory into Throughput. The Objective - To increase Throughput and/or decrease Inventory and Operating Expenses. Five Focusing Steps - Step 1: Identify the System's Constraint(s). Step 2: Decide how to Exploit the System's Constraint (s). Step 3: Subordinate Everything Else to the Decisions made in Step 2. Step 4: Elevate the System's Constraint(s). Step 5: If a Constraint is broken in Step 4, Go Back to Step 1, but Do Not Allow Inertia to Cause a New Constraint. The orientation of TOC is toward the output of the entire system, rather than a look at a discrete unit or component. The five focusing steps assist with identifying the largest constraint that overshadows all the others. These steps constitute an iterative process. As soon as one constraont is strengthened, the next weakest link becomes the priority constraint and should be addressed. Thus, a process of ongoing system improvement is applied to the business practice of the firm." Unfortunately, many leaders fail to embrace leadership responsibilities and instead busy themselves with non-leadership tasks - the work their teams should be doing. "Business Model Innovation Business Model Innovation is not about looking back, because the past indicates little about what is possible in terms of future business models. Business Model Innovation is not about looking to competitors, since Business Model Innovation is not about copying or benchmarking, but about creating new mechanisms to create value and derive revenues. Companies invest heavily in market research, yet often wind up neglecting the customer perspective when designing products, services and business models. Good business model design avoids this error. It views the business model through customer's eyes. The challenge is to develop a sound understanding of customers on which to base business model design choices. The challenge of innovation is developing a deeper understanding of customers rather than just asking them what they want. Another challenge lies in knowing which customers to heed and which customers to ignore. Sometimes tomorrow's growth segments wait at the periphery of today's cash cows.Design Attitude The attributes of design attitude include a willingness to explore crude ideas, rapidly discard them, then take the time to examine multiple possibilities before choosing to refine a few - and accepting uncertainty until a design direction matures. Design attitude demands changing one's orientation from making decisions to creating options from which to choose. It's not about outlining only ideas you really plan to implement. It's about exploring new and perhaps absurd, even impossible ideas. The samurai lived by a simple creed - No Hesitation... No Doubt... No Surprise... No Fear... For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study, told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and how much he loved him. He handed him a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with his name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said," With all your money you give me a Bible? " He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible behind. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old. He thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. But before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to him. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father's house, sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important documents and saw the Bible, new, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse, Matt 7:11, " And if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father which is in Heaven, give to those who ask Him? " As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealers name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words... PAID IN FULL. How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?
