A Once in a Lifetime chance to own one of the coolest residences around. The church has

been an amazing property. The woodwork and the intricate details of the church remain

in-tact but the owner has added a modern flair. Ideal for someone who likes to think

‘outside of the box.’ You have to do yourself a favor and check out the tour. The beautiful

home is ready for a new caretaker. $265,000

This Story Starts in the late 1800s

Times were vastly different 120 years ago when this structure was built in 1894. Our county was just 30

years removed from the Civil War that helped form our government and society in general. We were still about 30 years from the Great Depression. The US had not fought either World War and our nation was still in relative in-fancy. Times were much simpler and everything was built by hand.

Workers used their hands and took pride in building quality prod-ucts. They used materials provided by nature and adapted to unfavora-ble working conditions and harsh winters.

The Church was an influential power within the community and served not only as a place of worship but also a central gathering loca-tion for the area residents. I’ve read stories about the church actually serving as a community ‘store’ if you will where local residents would come to bring the goods their either made by hand or were grown on

their farm and would bring them to the church to trade or sell.

Here are a couple of facts from 1894 taken from thepeoplehis-tory.com: Coca-Cola First Sold In Bottles, With Coca-Cola having been trademarked in 1893, the Coca-Cola Company was able to sell its pro-duce in bottles for the first on March 12th, 1894 in Vicksburg, Mississip-pi. The Jungle Book, The Jungle Book is a collection of stories written by Rudyard Kipling. The tales in the book are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons.

A Path less Traveled

The history of this building is one that could be turned into a Hollywood movie. You’ve heard the old say-ing, “If these walls could talk.” Well, if this church could tell you what it’s seen over the last 120 years you would be amazed.

The story starts as the structure was built in 1894 in Hagerstown by The Church of the Brethren.

In 1914 they decided their congregation has outgrown the structure. It was sold to The Seventh Day Ad-ventist Church and moved to Smithsburg, its current location. The structure was used as church until the mid 1940’s, during this period a classroom and office was added to the rear, beyond the Sanctuary.

It was then sold to Erica Thimey and her sister who taught liturgical dance in the main sanctuary while liv-

ing in the rear and downstairs. The property has since been renovated into a single family home.

Present Day Amenities meet Old World Charm

Do you want a house that will have your friends talking? Ideal for hosting parties. Large enough to have a New York Loft type modern flair, but small enough to offer the comforts of ‘home.’

Enter through the main front door and you immediately enter the ‘Sanctuary’ and you’ll imme-diately know that you are entering a piece of histo-

ry. There are 3 main features that will immediately catch your eye.

First the Vastness of what was used as the sanctuary has been turned into the main living ar-ea of the residence. The large open feel allows

you to customize the interior design however you see fit. Want a living room in the front? You can do it. Want a dance floor in the middle? Do it. Dining Room that seats 20? Can be done. You are only limited by your own imagination when it comes to the layout for the main living area.

Second, after you pick your tongue up off the floor with the possibilities of what you can do to the main living and you start taking in the details on the trim work and moldings. As you look up you’ll notice that the ceilings are an incredible stained wood that are about 14 feet high.

The third feature that will immediately draw your attention are the windows. They are stain glass and provide an amazing vibe and lighting to the main Sanctuary. Many try to replicate the feeling in modern buildings but it just

seems fake, not here, the setting and the structure along with all the crisp woodwork make the stain glass feel pop.

Modern Amenities with an Old World Flair

The structure has evolved in the last several years to the beautiful structure that you currently see on Brad-bury Avenue in Smithsburg. One with modern features and amenities that make this unique property a ‘home’ wor-thy of having you as the next owner.

In the rear part of the Sanctuary the owner has installed a fully functioning, modern kitchen. An open setting with no walls but a definite designated area for all your cooking and baking needs. Featuring a kitchen island with gas cooktop that is ideal for socializing with your guests or family while you are making their favorite meal.

To the right rear corner of the Sanctuary is a very chill sitting area that is elevated 8 inches from the main

flooring. This could serve as a separate dining area, a sitting area, or could actually be used as a stage for perfor-mances.

One of the coolest features of the Sanctuary is the area where the preacher used to deliver his sermons. It is also elevated and in its current life has been used a separate office/desk area. On the back left side of the area is the ‘secret’ stairway that the preacher used to enter the church just before delivering his sermons.

Huge Master Suite with Updated Bath

Past the kitchen to the rear of the church down the hall and to the right you’ll enter the own-er’s suite. Fully modernized with a large spa-like shower and bath. This suite is massive at 22 feet

by 16 feet, yet again it gives you a modern sleek feel as the owner has an open closet concept.

The bath has been totally remodeled and you have to take 2 steps up to enter your oversized shower ar-ea. If you want close, cozy quarters then you must look elsewhere. Bradbury offers an open living concept in one of the coolest structures you’ll ever see.

Additional Living Area Downstairs

The lower level has smaller, separate rooms that might have been used as classrooms or office space for the church. These rooms add to the overall living area of the residence and can be 2nd and 3rd bedrooms with a separate bath on the lower level.

There is also ample room for storage in the lower level.

The recent upgrades include updating electrical and plumbing, new water heater, new water softener, new vinyl siding, new gutters and soffit, and custom built storm windows (to help with the homes efficiency).
