PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends

End of Term One

We are all finding it difficult to accept that Term One has come to an end. The nine weeks goes by so fast. As usual it has been an exciting, interesting and eventful term. I consider that much has been achieved by the students, staff and parents. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the enthusiasm and interest of our students, the dedication of all staff and the fantastic support of our parents. Our working partnership is highly valued and key to the philosophy of who we are at St Michael’s.

Lent Thank you for supporting the work of Caritas through Project Compassion and the work of St Vincent de Paul. The school raised $500 over the 40 Caritas days. We also raised approx. $350 through the ‘Dressed By Vincent’ fashion show plus the amount spent at the St Vincent de Paul Op Shop. I congratulate Rachael M and the Mini Vinnies Team and especially Erin Nagel for

Organisation, Structures, Resource Management, Staff Wellbeing, and Professional Learning

Page 4: QUIS UT DEUS | WHO IS LIKE GOD · MON 7 Art/Music/Storytime 9.30am Wellbeing Room THU10 First Eucharist Family Faith Night 7pm THUR10 Mother’s Day Stall FRI 11 Assembly 2.30pm SAT

organising the event. I also applaud all parents who supported these events for showing our children that Social Justice is an important part of what we stand for at St Michael’s Parish School.

Holy Week and Easter Prayer Services Easter is that wonderful time of hope. It is a time to acknowledge all the signs and symbols of hope that we experience in our world. All the events of Easter are central to our faith. Easter is a time when we are able to reflect on the meaning of our Christian faith and our Catholic Church through Christ‘s death and resurrection.

Thank you to the parents who were able to join us on Thursday to reflect on the events of Holy Week through the Year One Two Story. I thank the staff and students who did an exceptional job preparing the prayer service. I encourage you to continue the journey at Mass for Holy Thursday, the Good Friday service and of course Easter Sunday. As a school we will celebrate the Risen Christ when we return in Term Two. At school, E aster Sunday will be celebrated after the holidays at the first assembly in week two, Friday 27th April at 2:30pm. Please see the Parish Bulletin for Holy Week times and services.

Sibling Enrolments for 2019 Just a reminder to any siblings who may be enrolling for Prep for 2019, enrolment forms are due by the 11th of May 2018. The form is now available at the office and on the School Website www.smashburton.catholic.edu.au. To avoid disappointment, all Prep 2019 enrolment forms must be received by the due date.

Wine Cheese and Data Thank you to all parents who attended our inaugural Wine, Cheese and Data evening last Tuesday. The teachers were excited to share their knowledge and provide clarity about our assessment practises and the tools we use. We received some great feedback in relation to providing parents with their own copy of the data charts at Parent Teacher Child Conversations to enable greater understanding of their children’s growth in relation to each of the assessments. We are happy to make the data charts available and will hold the Wine, Cheese and Data in advance of Parent Teacher Child Conversations in the future.

St Michael’s Open Days

Congratulations to our school leaders who took the tours for Open Day on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. The feedback from the families was extremely positive. If you know of anyone who missed our Open Days please tell your friends and family to come along, make an appointment and meet our wonderful student leaders and to hear about our amazing school and the excellent learning opportunities our school provides.

Double Denim Trivia Night Congratulations to Mel Bidychak, Jac Sonego, Windsors, Morton Frederiksen, Michelle Menelaws, Alan Bidychak, Elena Squires, Angela Nikolai and Dave Thek and all other PFA members for organising such a wonderful evening last Friday. The staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Great fun and excellent fundraising was had by all.

Electives Term 2

Electives will begin on Friday April 20th. There are fourteen different activities that the children may choose from to support their learning. I encourage any parents who are available to consider helping out once a fortnight as we all benefit from the extra support. The Electives are at 2:30pm and are cross-age from Prep to Year Six.

Marisa away on Long Service Leave I will be on Long Service Leave from Monday 16th April for three weeks. Erin will be in charge in my absence with support from our Leadership Team. I am very excited as my parents, siblings and their partners are all meeting at Pumpkin Island off Yeppoon to celebrate my brother’s birthday. I look forward to telling you all about my time away when I return on May 6th for the Women’s Breakfast.

Junior Playground

The Junior Playground committee has met once in relation to establishing a new junior playground utilizing the funds

raised by the 2017 PFA. It is wonderful to have so many parents willing to volunteer to be on the committee. Erin and I

met with the SRC students to obtain their feedback in relation to the current designs. Our final quote has been

organised and will be received early Term Two. Erin will organise another meeting early Term Two to provide the

feedback from the children on their preferred design.

DEPUTY’S NEWS What a short yet busy term we’ve had! It has been filled with muchfabulous learning and many wonderful celebrations and gatherings. I’d like to commend the teachers and students for their work this term and thank all parents and caregivers for their support.

Term Two promises to be an exciting term filled with many events such as the beginning of Friday afternoon electives for students, the Women’s Day Breakfast, Walkathon and we also look forward to work with and preparing the Year Four students for their First Eucharist celebrations. Have a safe and restful break with your families. I wish you all a peaceful and happy Easter.

LEARNING AND TEACHING NEWS Wine, Cheese and Data Evening

Thank you to all parents and caregivers who attended the Wine, Cheese and Data Evening. As I wandered the rooms it was lovely to hear the teachers sharing their knowledge of assessment, their teaching pedagogies and knowledge of their students so passionately with parents and caregivers. I hope you enjoyed hearing about how and why we teach and assess the way we do at St Michael’s and how our emphasis is on individual student growth and progress.

Mini Vinnies and Dressed by Vincent

Today we held our first red carpet event the ‘Dressed by Vincent’ Fashion Show.

I would like to congratulate the Mini Vinnies Team for all the work they have put into organising the event and a special thanks to Reine, Alyssia, Rachael and Macy for entertaining us whilst being the MCs for the show. I can proudly share that the team raised a total of $340 to donate to St Vincent de Paul.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION St Patrick’s Day Mass Last Friday Marisa and I went with the Year Six School Leaders to the St Patrick Day Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in the city. It was a lovely Mass followed by a fun concert and activities in the gardens. Our Year Six Leaders were a fine representation of our school.

Dear St Michael’s Parish School Families

St Michael’s Parish and School is inviting all St Michael’s Parish School families, along with all parish families, to nominate a

month and Mass time in 2018 whereby their family will participate in the Presentation of Gifts at a Mass during the year.

Bread and wine symbolize a wonderful cooperation between God and humans. We lay upon the altar not only creation’s goods but

ours, too. The gifts are not mere wheat and grapes, but “the work of human hands.” Symbolically, that’s us on the altar, offering

ourselves to God. In the Eucharistic Prayer, we ask God to send the Spirit to change the gifts and change us as well. The gift of

ourselves is never easy, and the church, knowing that, treats our offerings with great care. The priest places them in a dignified

place on the altar and asks God to receive them to himself. “Pray, sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours” — not only

bread and wine, but what they symbolize: our work, struggles, joys, money, our very lives — “may be acceptable to God, the

almighty Father.”

Mrs Matthys and I value our Catholic culture and tradition and would like all families to feel they belong and are welcome.

Participation in the Sacraments at Sunday Mass supports our children in readiness when they will share in the Sacrament of

Eucharist and Confirmation and brings them closer to God and our wonderful parish community.

The Parish will establish a roster which will be published in the School newsletter once we receive your nominated Mass months

and time. Thank you for supporting our Parish and School.

Fr. Laurence Marisa Matthys

Parish Priest Principal

STUDENT WELLBEING

Dear Parents and Caregivers, I would like to share a letter from a parent from one of the students:

Hi Jo, Just thought I'd email you to say thanks for a fabulous day for the grade six children. Ana has not stopped talking about it since she got home. We've heard about the train trips, the socialising within our grade 6 group, the venue, each speaker, the silent disco, meeting children from other schools, how well Adam did on stage and even the grey jumper dress that looked so good on you! She has told us the point each speaker was trying to get across, eg. Harrison Craig...follow your dreams and has even Googled the speakers to find out more about them. Thanks again to all involved for organising such and exciting and stimulating day for the children...your efforts are greatly appreciated. Regards Fiona Baker (Ana 5/6ES)

National Young Leaders Day 2018

On Monday the 26th of March, the Grade 6 students attended the Halogen ‘National Young Leaders Day’ at the Melbourne Exhibition Building. We had the privilege of watching 4 guest speakers share

their inspiring life stories. Here are some photos, quotes and stories from the day.

Silent Disco

John Courtis

By Olivia Durkin

John Courtis’ parents were told the day he was born that he was not going to survive through the day.

But, to their surprise, he made it through that day, then he made that week, then he made it through

that month. The doctors told his parents that he was surely not going to make it to his first birthday...

but he made it to his forty-eighth birthday! All of this talk was because of John’s legs, they were

deformed at birth.

John started off in a disabled school for kids then he decided that in year five to go to a regular

primary school. He went through some rough times at school. In primary school he experienced severe

bullying.

In high school John experienced more bullying. One time an ambulance had to come to save John’s life.

That was when he decided to get his legs amputated.

Right at that time in his life, John decided he was going to be an inspirational speaker, which is exactly

what he did. John’s golden rule is simply this:

“Know what is right, know what is wrong, it’s your choice.”

You make mistakes and so does everyone else. But helping anyone in need can help even just a little.

Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated, so you and everyone can get the respect they

deserve.

Cosentino was shy when he was younger and it was mostly because he had learning difficulties. He was

always the guy that would sit at the back of the classroom so he could try and avoid the questions the

teacher would ask. His mum was the principal of the school and she tried everything she could to get

him to learn quicker. He was put in focus classes out of school to try and improve his learning.

One day, when he was in the library with his mum, he stumbled across a magic book. He was interested

in the pictures in the book so he asked his mum if she could read him some of it. He took the book

home and attempted to practise the magic tricks, but he couldn’t read so he had to get his mum to

‘transfer all the fancy language’ in the book to something that he could understand. By now he had

learnt his first word, but he was twelve. These books helped him develop his learning. Kids made fun of

him at school because of his learning problems but none of them knew about his magic. He chose not to

tell anyone because he knew that if one day he ‘made it big’ they would realise that he is amazing. And

he was. Cosentino has taught me to embrace who I am and not let anyone tell me what I can and can’t

do.

ART AND TINKERING CLUB Art and Tinkering Club will be held each Tuesday (11.00am - 11.30am), during first break. All students are welcome to come and go as they please and work on any project that interests them. We are still happy to receive all your treasured bits ‘n pieces to the art room veranda door. Please do not take donations to the office. We are always in need of fabric and textile scraps, boxes, plastic containers, cardboard tubes and off cuts, broken electrical goods and other house hold recyclable items. We do not use toilet rolls, egg cartoons, old milk bottles, glass jars and bottles or any electrical goods with glass or sharp cutting edges. If you donate a printer please remove the print cartridges (these are usually able to be recycled in print stores). Thank you very much for your continued support of the Art and Tinkering Club. A Walking School Bus is a way to encourage primary school children to walk to and from school rather than being

driven. The children walk in a group with an adult "driver" at the front and an adult "conductor" at the rear. The WSB

program provides significant benefits to its users:-

1. Increases physical activity. It is healthy to walk and combats the inactivity that is a threat to our children's health. 2. Reinforces road safety. It introduces children into being street and traffic wise. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK 3. Children arrive at school alert and motivated. 4. Enjoyable and social experience being part of a group/team. 5. Children become more familiar with their neighbourhood. 6. It’s fun for kids and adults. 7. Each time a child walks in the WSB they earn a house point.

The Walking School Bus (WSB) will run again this year every Friday commencing on the 9th of February!

A special thank you to all our volunteer drivers and conductors for making it possible for the kids to participate this year.

We are still looking for bus drivers and conductors for the Green and Yellow routes which are not operational as yet.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions or ideas please contact Steve on 0409850444 (Rachel 5/6R) or

[email protected]. The more walkers we have the better the walk will be!

If your child / children were registered and walked last year you must register again this year.

We look forward to seeing you walking to school!

2018 St Michael’s PFA Parent Helper Form

Dear St Michael’s Families.

We have an enriched welcoming community of families at this school, which is made possible by the help the PFA

receive from hosting many fundraising and social events for our community. The aim of the PFA is to raise money for

the needs of the students at our school. This year, all funds raised will be going towards the new junior

Play ground, fitting out the blackbox theatre and an electronic sign outside the school.

We are aware that we often ask parents to volunteer to help for many events, and so this year, thought we would alert

you to all the events the PFA is running, including the timing of these events, and ask you to consider which ones you

would be keen to volunteer for. The hope is that we only have to ask once, at the beginning of the year, and then the

event co-ordinators will be in touch directly with their team of willing parent volunteers. Please note some events may

be subject to change and additional events added.

Please return this form to the office basket by Friday 20th April.

Many thanks,

St Michael’s PFA.

Extend OSHC at St Michael’s Primary School

Hi Everyone! Term 1 is at an end and what a busy term it’s been. The fine summer weather has let us spend a lot of time outside playing games and using our imaginations. Our new disco activity has become very popular and it has been great to see everyone showing off their best moves. We have also spent time cooking healthy treats, conducting some very colourful science experiments and creating some art and craft masterpieces. We require all students to have hats on for outdoor play. You are more than welcome to leave one at ASC, or have this in your children’s bag for each day! We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter and holidays and are looking forward to seeing everyone back next term for more fun. Margaret, Team Leader HAVE YOU BEEN TO EXTEND? At After School Care we have heaps of activities that are planned in advance that include arts and crafts, team games, sports, science, fun with food, and more! If you haven’t been before we’d love to meet you. Feel free to pop by any time during operation hours to meet the Service Coordinators and see what activities are on which your child could enjoy.
