WAYS TO TRANSFORM AN EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE INVOKE THE IMAGINATION

Reflect on things as a storyteller, create your own story, be an actor in a play, or be the filmmaker. Create props from recycled re-used materials. Everything and

everyone’s collaborative ideas are a source of ideas for the story. Wear a costume or a disguise. Create with Fun!

Celebrating the wonderful world of Bees!

To make our bees we had to investigate a bee’s anatomy; and while making our bees there was plenty of opportunities for discussion

about the importance of bees to our local community and worldwide.

A Discussions from how we need to look after the preschool, extended to why we separate our food scraps, recycled materials, rubbish and soft plastics

at meal times. Which lead to a discussion of

The World of Landfill – What a Waste Exploring What is Landfill?

We send more and more rubbish away to landfill every year. There is no away, everything ends up somewhere and we are all responsible. Throwing stuff away is not

just a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ We all thought that sending green waste to landfill is fine. It’s natural right?? Surely it

just breaks down and creates good soil that helps the environment?? We discovered…No, sadly, this is not what happens at all.

Landfill sites are essentially great big piles of rubbish. There is no air in these great big piles and this means nothing much breaks down in them at all (did you know that old

landfills are now being treated as archaeological sites because the waste is so well preserved?!). The only organisms that can survive in a landfill are bacteria which

decomposes the waste anaerobically (without using oxygen). Unfortunately, when they go to work to break down organic material like green waste and food they create

methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Basically, we decided it was a bad gas a stinky gas and after discussion and role plays of what a bad stinky gas would look like we put on our scientist hats and we have created

little festering bags of bad gas – a rotten egg experiment. And by making a portable glass house that demonstrates how some of the heat of the Sun’s warmth from escaping back

into the air at night. Composting our green waste is so much better for our environment, taking green waste

back to earth, enriching the soil and helping to grow healthy crops and pastures that produce food for everyone. Today’s green waste can grow tomorrow’s lunch!
