Iwant to take this opportunity to share anobservation, point out a challenge that I think

we face and solicit your comments and sug-gestions.

For the past year, I have found myselfmaking comparisons between KDR today andKDR 45 years ago. My opinion is that changehas been minimal — both in KDR and in theoverall Greek community. Some of you willcertainly say “that’s great, why should wechange — KDR was good to me and I had funduring my undergraduate days, so no changeis good news.” However, is it possible thatany organization can remain healthy and growwhile essentially maintaining the status quo, inthe midst of major change as a daily constantthroughout society and the world?

I recently attended the annual conventionof the North-American InterfraternityConference, which represents 68 national fra-ternities. Something that struck me rathervividly is that there is insignificant differencebetween KDR and the other 67. All of the fra-ternities are working diligently to grow andstay healthy, and we are doing it using thesame customer base. If I was in a businessthat had 67 competitors, all selling the sameproduct to the same customer source, I wouldnot only be concerned about the future, but Iwould be looking for a creative way to definemy product in a unique manner so that I couldcapitalize on a defined “niche” market.

As KDR approaches the 100-year anniver-sary I believe we must find a way to differenti-ate ourselves from the “pack” and to develop aKDR “niche” that can become synonymouswith a unique aspect in society. This must bedone to the point that before students begincollege they will be familiar with the name KDRand our reputation for being an organization ofwhich they want to be a member.

Now, what do we do to be unique amongthe fraternities and to have a positive and far-reaching reputation that brings high caliberstudents to our door? I’m not sure, but in sev-eral small discussions recently, I’ve heardKDR’s suggest that we should have significant

national involve-ment in such thingsas charitableevents, children’sprograms and men-toring. From anational standpoint,we are very inter-ested in your inputand suggestions.

Again, during my KDR life I believe thatthe Greek community has been coasting, while society has moved from nothing inspace to nearly weekly space travel fromslide-rules to computers from rotary phonesto space satellites providing instantaneousworldwide data links. Where did the namesToyota, Nissan and Honda come from, andhow did they capture a major share of theauto market? Not only is change inevitable, but several weeks ago, GM announced thatOldsmobile will be discontinued; couldn’t finda niche. And, now Montgomery Ward, after128 years in business, is closing its doors.Wards said the problem was a difficult environ-ment (sounds like fraternities), but severalanalysts said the biggest problem was failureto create a unique identity.

Enough on this subject for now. We con-tinue to be healthy, we are in the game tostay. We do compete and offer strong compe-tition to all the other fraternities, and we havea winning record.

As with you, KDR is very dear to myheart and there are many aspects about fra-ternity life that should not, and will not, change. However, for the good of KDR wemust be sure that our thinking is not “confinedto the box.” Keep in touch and let me hearfrom you.

The GOOD NEWS about FRATERNITIES and today’sYOUNG PEOPLE.

Is this a head-line you don’t seevery often? Youshould, and hereis why!

Bad pressabout fraternitieshighlights the iso-lated failures andlapses in judge-ment that young people have beenafflicted by forever. Each of us tends toforget about our own transgressions andmistakes, and we remember our under-graduate days as a flawless experience.

The truth is that young people todayare stronger than they have been in along time in a number of importantareas.

From theExecutive Director

Peter J. Tartaro, Lambda Beta ’00, Joins OfficePete graduated in December 2000 from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, home

of the Lambda Beta chapter. He majored in political science and speech communications with aminor in music. Pete served his chapter as consul, senior tribune and pontifex/chairman of Advisory. He was also active in the IFC for several years. His future plans include going to law school.

In Pete’s own words, “It is an exciting time to be a member of KDR and I am just glad to be apart of the national office.”

Goodbye Scott BradleyWm. Scott Bradley, Zeta Beta ’99 (Tarleton State), decided to give up his city shoes and head

back to the Lone Star State. Last October, we bade farewell to Brother Bradley as he returnedhome to work for Great Western Directories and World Pages.com. We will miss his positive con-tributions to strengthening the fraternity. He will remain involved with the National Fraternity as avolunteer working on a variety of topics. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors!

1 p.m. Opening SessionAll undergraduates arrived before to 1 p.m. on Thursday for the opening ses-sion. Small groups were formed to create a teamwork approach for the lead-

ership curriculum. Justin Lookadoo, Zeta Beta ’93, served as our keynote pre-senter and opened up the Leadership Academy with an exciting, hilarious and

motivational session.

2 p.m.Full group presentations were followed with focused group teamwork activi-ties. These smaller teams, made up of 8 to 10 undergraduates, and led byvolunteer facilitators, processed the leadership topics on a more intimate andpersonal level. Each group created a coat of arms to identify their values.

Q&S 7

As you learned in the last issue ofthe Quill & Scroll, Paul Downes, who served as president of our

foundation for over seven years, hasstepped down. Under Paul’s capable lead-ership the foundation’s assets have grownto over 1.2 million dollars, and we all owehim a debt of gratitude for that accom-plishment. Fortunately, Paul has agreed tocontinue to serve on the foundationboard in the capacity of secretary and vicepresident of the general fund. We areblessed to be able to continue to draw onPaul’s experience and enthusiasm.

At our foundation board’s annualmeeting in August in Philadelphia I waselected the foundation’s new president. Iam looking forward to this new responsi-bility, but already know that any success Imight enjoy will only be possible with thehelp and cooperation of all of our alumni.

For the campaign year July 1, 1999to June 30, 2000 you generously con-tributed about $325,000 to the founda-tion. Just under $100,000 was funneled tothe fraternity for authorized expendi-tures to support leadership training andeducational pursuits of the undergradu-ate members. Just over $170,000 wererestricted gifts to be added to variousendowment and scholarship funds. Thebalance of contributions received wasused to support various foundationexpenses connected principally with rais-ing the money.

In addition to the support for ourfraternity mentioned above, your founda-tion was able to grant about $36,000 inscholarships to 26 deserving youngundergraduates. The money for theseawards came essentially from endowmentinvestment income, which lately hasgrown each year. These scholarships wereannounced at our annual meeting inAugust. It is a great pleasure to watch ouryoung members accept this assistancefrom your fraternity, one I hope each ofyou will be able to view someday.

As you also learned through our lastQuill & Scroll, Bill Paris, our long-timedirector of gift planning and develop-ment, has moved to another position out-side of KDR as his career grows. We havebeen very fortunate in successfullyrecruiting Patrick Uram to succeed Bill.Patrick joins us after successful stints inbanking at the Mellon Bank, in adminis-tration at the Czech Management Centerin the Czech Republic, and, more recent-ly, as director of the American Chamberof Commerce in the Slovak Republic.Patrick was an undergraduate at

Washington & Jefferson College andholds a graduate degree from theGraduate School of Public andInternational Affairs of the University ofPittsburgh. I hope each of you will get toknow this fine young man as he leads ourfoundation into the future. Please be asgracious to him as you have been overthe years to Bill Paris.

At our August meeting, we added anew trustee to the foundation board. Ournew trustee is Mike Mueller, a 1995 grad-uate of the University of Illinois (EtaChapter). Mike lives in Springfield, IL,where, as a Certified Public Accountantand Chartered Financial Planner, he isinvolved with private asset managementand financial planning for WealthManagement Services, LLC. Mike bringsa new enthusiasm and a youthful view toour board and I look forward to his helpover the next few years.

Unfortunately, we also said adieu atour August meeting to John C. Carl(Theta, ’51). John has been dealing with

some healthissues recentlyand has decid-ed he can nolonger serve asa trustee. Johnhas been amarvelousmember of our fraternity over the years. He has served for several years as a direc-tor of the fraternity and more recently asa trustee of the foundation. He has beena strong supporter both financially and intime and effort for more years than mostof us can remember. It is the opportunityto serve with brothers like John thatmakes our fraternity service memorable.I will miss John’s counsel and support, and we wish him better health and a well-earned rest.

Many corporations offer their employees the opportunity to increase their charitablecontributions. They do this through matching gift programs. Some are 1-for-1 matches, others are 2-for-1 matches. Check with your Human Resources Department and seeif they have such a program at your workplace. Matched gifts were received fromthe following companies in the fiscal year ended 6/30/2000. By Patrick UramDirector of Gift Planning and Development

At the August 2000 Williams Leadership Academy,I was chosen by the Board of Trustees as the Directorof Gift Planning and Development of the Kappa DeltaRho Foundation. I accepted that appointment withhonor and I look forward to serving the board and youwith distinction.

In this edition of the Quill & Scroll I would like tointroduce myself, talk about recent Foundation activityand discuss our plans for the near-future.

I earned my undergraduate degree in 1986 fromWashington and Jefferson College where I majored inHistory and Business. While at W&J I was active in myfraternity Zeta Beta Tau, having served as treasurer, aswell as other leadership positions. I was also active instudent government as treasurer. Finally, upon gradua-tion I served as a trustee of my chapter until 1993.

Professionally, my first position post-W&J was withMellon Financial Services as an account manager inthe Bank Custody division. In 1990, I left Mellon to pur-sue my Master’s degree from the University ofPittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public andInternational Affairs. Subsequently, I moved to Pragueto manage the international MBA Program at the

Czechoslovak Management Center. After three years, Imanaged the American Chamber of Commerce in theSlovak Republic, returning to the States in 1999.

I have also been active in the non-profit sectorserving on the boards of the Washington CountyHistory and Landmarks Foundation, Washington CountyHistorical Society and the Malcolm Parcell Art andHistorical Society. I believe, as does the board oftrustees, that these experiences, from fraternal to busi-ness to non-profit, will enable me to continue theexpansion of the efforts and mandates of the KappaDelta Rho Foundation.

Plans for the new year are well underway. TheGeneral Fund campaign for the fiscal year 2000-2001continues to gain momentum. More than $30,000 wasraised in December. Your contribution to the GeneralFund continues to enable us to provide the fraternitywith the programming grants that result in events suchas the Williams Leadership Academy. I had the plea-sure of attending the August 2000 academy and cameback with a genuine appreciation for the KDR motto“Honor Before All Things”. Your consistent support ofthe General Fund is both appreciated and necessary. The Vision 2000 Campaign also continues to progress. The success of the five year $5 million dollar campaignis vital for our long-term objectives. Note the campaign

counter on the backpage of this Quill &Scroll. If you stillhave not made apledge, please con-sider one today. Ifyou have alreadymade a pledge, thank you for remaining current with your commitment.

The board of trustees will meet in Philadelphia thefirst weekend of March for our semi-annual meeting. At this meeting Delano (Del) Newkirk, a 1961 graduateof Indiana University (Nu Chapter) will be added as atrustee. Del lives in Nashville, TN with his wife Lettie.Del’s experience as owner of several fast food restau-rants in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado willbe a definite asset to the Foundation as we move for-ward.

Finally, one of the true pleasures of working withthe KDR Foundation is being the person responsible foradministering our scholarship program. This year wehave pushed the application deadline back to April 15thand will be implementing an ambitious marketing cam-paign so that more KDR’s are aware of and take advan-tage of the scholarships we have to offer. If you know ofany deserving KDR’s (and remember there are graduatescholarships as well), contact me at the national office.

Thank you and again I look forward to an excitingfuture with Kappa Delta Rho.

OUTSTANDING ADVISORDR. ROBERT MARBACH, ETA BETA HONORARYDuring the last 11 years, Dr. Marbach hasplayed a major role in the fraternity. Heconducts educational programs for eachnew member class, cheers on the sidelines of every intramuralgame and has even set-up and participated in community ser-vice events throughout the years. This past spring, Dr.Marbach joined the undergraduates as they traveled to theRegional Conclave. The following quote from the chapter bestdescribes Dr. Marbach’s investment in the fraternity. “It is ourseniors that he gets the most emotional about and everysemester he can be seen in the back of the room at the formalmeeting with a tear in his eye and a lump in his throat. I oftenwonder how it can be possible to care so much for so manypeople.” This is the second year in a row that Dr. Marbach hasreceived this award.

GREEK ADVISOR OF THE YEARSIMI WILHELM, COLGATE UNIVERSITYOur chapters greatly benefit from thepositive influence of the campus profes-sionals that advise them. Simi Wilhelm ofColgate University has played an instrumental role in thedevelopment of Delta Chapter. She worked very closely withthe local chapter and built a strong relationship with the staffof the national office in order to build strength into this groupand help steer them through some challenging events. Her tal-ent, approach, dedication and persistence are exemplary. Thisis the first year that the National Fraternity has chosen a leaderfrom among the impressive group of campus Greek advisorsthat we are fortunate to work with. Simi’s selection sets a veryhigh standard for the future.

On September 21, the NIC held its first CongressionalReception. The event was extremely well attended by

members of both houses of Congress and from both sidesof the partisan aisle. Bob Swinney, national president, andChris Miller, executive director, represented Kappa Delta Rhoat the event.

RADM James Carey, a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity,is a member of the NIC board and currently serves as theNIC’s Government Relations chair. He and a dedicated groupof volunteers worked tirelessly to organize a wonderful eventthat allowed fraternity volunteers and staff members to dis-cuss important fraternity issues with our elected leaderswho are also members of fraternities. A special thanks tointerfraternal brother Carey.

Congressman Ed Pease, a member of Pi Kappa AlphaFraternity, served as the NIC president for the past year andis pictured in between Chris Miller and Bob Swinney. Manual recount needed for DC area alumni eventThe National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho hosted a social event for all KDR’s in the greater Washington,

DC area. With more than 800 alumni in the area, a successful event was inevitable.Fifteen chapters were represented on Saturday November 11, 2000, at Capitol City Brewing Company near

Capitol Hill. Although our nation’s next president was still undecided, 50 brothers and 70 total attendees (aftera manual recount) enjoyed an evening of networking, renewing old friendships and starting new ones.

Representatives of the national office staff, fraternity directors, and foundation trustees were availablethroughout the evening to answer questions and deliver the latest and greatest news surrounding our state ofaffairs. Special thanks go to Ryan Schoenfeld and other Lambda Beta alumni who helped make phone contactsfor the event.

A new method of registration was used for this event. More than 30 brothers took advantage of online registra-tion via a link found on the KDR homepage. During the event Paul Sisco, Eta ’50, shared various stories regard-ing his days as leader of the DC area alumni group in the 1970’s. He challenged the “younger breed of brothers”to begin holding successful annual events for this area. Several brothers, including Ryan Schoenfeld, LambdaBeta ’95, and Robert Merriner, Omega ’73, expressed interest in accepting this challenge. Good luck guys!

The next scheduled National alumni event will be in Indianapolis. It will take place during the conventionon August 10 or 11, 2001.

Don’t forget that each active alumni corporation pays to send an alumni delegate to convention.Unfortunately, many corporations do not take advantage of this. New alumni sessions and programming topicswill be presented at this year’s convention. The convention is one of the best ways to help build stronger alumnirelations. Previous alumni programming at convention included budgeting, housing contracts, newsletters andtax information.

This year’s programming is not complete, but we are looking into topics surrounding websites for corpora-tions, insurance and roundtable discussions with the board of directors. Keep checking the KDR homepageunder alumni events for more details. If your chapter is holding an event and you wish to publicize it on thehomepage please contact the national office.

I would like to encourage every alumnus to help in some way in the “Continuation of Brotherhood.”

On October 24, 2000, the National Fraternity recognized the Kappa Delta Rho Society - Alpha Chapter with a charter. Theevent was a marvelous celebration of brotherhood, strength of the undergraduate brothers of Middlebury College and the histo-ry of Kappa Delta Rho.

In the afternoon, the undergraduate brothers organized a walking tour to Old Painter Hall and the 50th anniversary com-memorative plaque. That evening the brothers arranged a formal meal for a packed room in the chapter house.

Bob Swinney, national president, andChris Miller, executive director, addressed thebrothers prior to presenting the charter. Intheir comments, they recognized the accom-plishments of the Alpha Society. They also dis-cussed the responsibility that comes withKappa Delta Rho membership and particularlywith being a KDR from Middlebury.

In addition to our undergraduateMiddlebury brothers, Glenn Jarrett, Alpha’70; Ray Walch, Alpha ’46; and Steve Blum,Beta ’72, also participated.

Congratulations to the Alpha Society!

Chapter EternalJuly 21, 2000

Dear Sir,

When I was at school, and a fewtimes since, folks would ask why Ijoined a fraternity. My stock answer, and it was true, was that when I wentout on campus, no matter what Ilooked like or how I felt there were50 or so people who were glad to seeme. It wasn’t a “herd” mentality. Itwasn’t “being a follower.” It was amatter of brotherhood. Some of usdidn’t like each other so well. But,we stood together when the timecame to stand together. I knew theywere there for me and I was proudof all of them.

In 1986, my step-brother died. Isay step-brother only to clarify, notminimize the relationship. We werevery close. His death was a cataclysmfor my family.

One of the few warm memoriesfor me from that time is from thememorial service. We sat in the frontpew of our church, with most of thetown packed inside or standing out-side in the cold. I was concentratingon keeping my vision clear and myhead straight so I could be sure toget my family back to the house okay.

My mother leaned over to me andthrough her tears said, “Aren’t thoseyour fraternity brothers?”

I looked back over my shoulderand there, lined up like sentinelsagainst the wall, was a contingent ofthe brothers. They stood there talland strong, watching over me andmy family. I don’t remember if Iwaved or acknowledged them in anyway. But, I knew they were there andit meant the world to me.

That was the fraternity experi-ence for me in a nutshell. I knewthey were always there — like-mind-ed men, bonded by tradition andloyalty. I wouldn’t have traded it foranything.

Anyway, you’ll have to forgive mefor the nostalgia. To tell the truth, Ididn’t stay in touch with many of theguys after I graduated. I haven’t seenmost of them in 12 years. But, I stillthink about them sometimes.

I didn’t stay involved and I appre-ciate the efforts of those of you whohave.

Fraternally yours,

Ryan H. LobergPhi Alpha ’88

Kappa Delta Rho at Oregon State was a greatexperience for me. We had some goodtimes and some tough times, but we

learned to live and work together. Many of thethings I learned during my time at KDR came inhandy, later in life, as I worked to build my father’slumber company into a major player in theOregon timber industry.

I think KDR provides experiences like the one Ihad to lots of young people, at a lot of different col-leges. You can’t find that experience in a classroom.

Years ago, the National Fraternity wasn’t much. And, as far as I know, there wasn’t a Foundation. But, I’ve watched in recent years as the Fraternityhas kind of grown up and begun to play a muchmore important role with our chapters. I thinkthat’s important. If we, as an organization aren’tstable financially at the National level, then wecan’t be effective supporting our chapters andtheir members.

I’ve met with Bill Paris from the Foundation, aswell as others over the years, and have gotten apretty good idea of our potential. When Bill talkedto me about the Vision 2000 Campaign, I thoughthere was a great chance for KDR to really take astep forward.

I thought seriously about the campaign, anddecided it was a good chance for me to ‘give some-thing back’ for my experience. I’m very pleased tosupport the campaign through a provision in myCharitable Remainder Trust to help ensure thatfuture generations of KDR’s have the same greatexperience I did.
