1. Briefly describe what you propose to do, how you plan to accomplish it, and why your project merits funding.

In 1883, the Oregon short-line railway sliced through the sagebrush near what is now Downtown Nampa. The settlers who pioneered this area through dedication and perseverance called what would become current day Nampa, “New Jerusalem,” a place of values and devotion. At the heart of Canyon County, Nampa continues to grow in both population and significance. As Nampa residents, it is our mission to bring public art that is both historically and culturally significant to the area. We propose to paint a mural that will invoke a connection with our city’s past, present and future on the west-facing exterior wall of Whiskey River, a local gathering area. We have already gained approval from the building’s owner and have applied for the appropriate city permits. Letters of support from both the building owner and the Downtown Nampa event coordinator are included. As you will see in the attached timetable, the mural is scheduled to begin early April and have the project completed by the end of June. As one of the first public murals in Downtown Nampa, we believe this project merits funding, as it will be a public art piece that Idahoans can enjoy for generations to come.

2. Explain how this activity will affect or enhance your ability, career, technique, artistic

development, managerial skills, or support continuation of an art form or your cultural heritage. To this project my partner, Dig Reeder, and I are bringing a strong sense of direction, ability to plan and organize, and an aptitude for clear and direct communication. This mural will give us the opportunity to further develop our skills as artists by allowing us the chance to complete a project on a larger, and more public scale. Besides pushing the boundaries of size we have previously worked with, we will have the opportunity to develop the technical skill of color mixing and blending on a larger scale as well as the challenges of working in an outdoor environment. We have the support of local artists experienced in large-scale mural artwork, who will guide and consult with us through every step of the process to ensure a professional, long lasting and quality piece of public art. We look forward to accomplishing a piece of art that will be enjoyed by the larger public as well as adding a significant work to our personal portfolios. Growing up in Idaho, Latino artists were barely visible. I would like to use my experience with the project to help others work on public art pieces as well as to demonstrate that being an artist and a Latino is possible. Public art, especially murals, have had cultural significance within the Latino community since the Chicano movement of the 1960s.

3. Explain the relationship between your work samples and the proposed project or activity. We see public art as a natural progression from our current mediums. The proposed mural utilizes the shapes, juxtapositions and symbols we have both developed in our respective past work, but on a larger scale. We look forward to expanding our technique with powerful colors and developing our work on a large scale that will reach the community; keeping us in reverence of the past and holding excitement for the future.

4. Describe how you will share the knowledge gained, involve your community, or how this

activity will benefit participants. At the time of completion of our proposed mural, we will be holding a Question and Answer at the site of the mural, in conjunction with a completion ceremony. This will focus on our learned experiences in the planning, organizing, and execution of the project. All members of our community will be invited to attend the free, outdoor Q & A, and the knowledge shared will invigorate Nampa’s artistic community and inspire other artists to follow the same path of personal expression and cultural respect.

1. Briefly describe what you propose to do, how you plan to accomplish it, and why your project merits funding.

When I moved to Nampa, Idaho in 2008, I found a place in which I could grow as an artist and encourage others in my community to do the same. During my time here, I have delved into the history of the city, while looking towards the future and the inclusion of public art. My partner, Hector Diaz, and I find inspiration in the past and the present Nampa, Idaho. We plan to create a mural to be displayed on the exterior of Whiskey River, located in historic Downtown Nampa, only a few blocks from the railroad that started the life of Nampa. The mural will depict a short-line train, rising from a high desert scape signifying the birth, growth, and bright future of Nampa Idaho. As we have completed and submitted the necessary permits and have the permission and encouragement of Chris Stern, the building owner, the next step in our endeavor is acquisition of funding. Included is the proposed timetable for this project. Beginning April 1, 2015, Hector and I will start the preliminary washing and priming, then move into the more intricate sketching and painting steps. With a two month time allotment, Hector and I will budget our time and work efficiently to create a high quality, long lasting piece of public art. We believe this project merits funding because it stands to empower local artists, pays homage to the past, present, and future of our home city, and brings local, highly visual art the our treasured Downtown Nampa, a hub for creativity and commerce alike.

2. Explain how this activity will affect or enhance your ability, career, technique, artistic

development, managerial skills, or support continuation of an art form or your cultural heritage. Hector Diaz and I bring a combined artistic skill set that covers a variety of mediums and abilities. Together we have worked to secure the details of the organizational duties of the project, while communicating with each other, as well as our mentors and city administration. We created a clear vision, a timetable for tasks, and a detailed budget for supplies. Utilization and further development of these skills will enhance our planning and managerial ability, both professionally and personally. We are excited to move into large scale project that will challenge our previous experience and allow us to progress as artists. We are also looking forward to developing a working artistic partnership and to consult with large-scale mural mentors about the process of creating public art. I take great personal pride in my city and believe strongly in artist involvement in their communities as a form of individual, and collective empowerment. I believe that this project will provide that for many people, for years to come.

3. Explain the relationship between your work samples and the proposed project or activity.

Both Hector and I believe that our styles and mediums transpose well into the public art spectrum. The proposed project encompasses many concepts we have previously worked with included juxtaposition of color and shape, use of abstract symbols, use of conceptual ideas in art, historic art creation, as well as painting and sketching techniques. Because of our involvement in the community, we are especially excited to work on a highly visible, large-scale project that will develop our artistic abilities and community ties further.

4. Describe how you will share the knowledge gained, involve your community, or how this activity will benefit participants. Once the proposed project is completed, we will be inviting all members of our community to join us for a completion ceremony that will include an in-depth question and answer session. We will be inviting local press. We want to specifically invite young and aspiring arts to view mural. We feel that this intimate level of community involvement is a quintessential element of what we hope to achieve with this mural. It is paramount that this project stands to inspire artistic development and civic pride in our community.

QuickFunds QUICKPROJECT FOR INDIVIDUALS Artist Statement Hector G. Diaz Making art has both been difficult and easy for me. I felt uncomfortable in any situation involving another person. I drew with a natural gifted for it. Drawing became how I fit in with my peers. As have grown older, I make art for different reasons. My major inspirations come from a loop I see in other artists. I am drawn to those who see duality within conceptual ideas. To do this is both strong and vulnerable. These contradictions, when balanced, show something that words lack the subtlety to speak of truthfully. The beauty of this kind of delicacy drives me to try and match it personally with my own visual art. When I look back at my work I see embedded in it, a piece of my true self, a self that is vulnerable enough to express out right. These fragments motivate me into working by promising more discoveries. The idea for the New Jerusalem 5000 Mural was created through this process. The idea was born out of including conceptual ideas within a tangible, straightforward landscape. I want to pay tribute to Nampa for becoming my home. I talked the idea over with Dig and we began working on ideas. The train came in as a symbol for Nampa. Before the train yard had a fence, when I first came to Nampa, I often walked in between the rails, through a metal canyon of shipping cars. They became what I think of when I think of Nampa. As we worked we saw that the idea harkened to the history of the town as it was founded on a railroad culture. The simplicity of the composition spoke of the frankness of Nampa. The quality of color, shape and composition excited us the most with its vitality. When Dig and I looked into this feeling we found out that these qualities have in it what we hope the future has for us, an other aspiring artists, in Nampa; an open space that fosters a growing artistic culture.

QuickFunds QUICKPROJECT FOR INDIVIDUALS Artist Statement Dig Reeder I can't remember a time when I wasn't obsessed with art. If it wasn't the enjoyment of seeing others creations it was the bliss of drawing; I drew and drew and drew. Today my artistic endeavors have grown in scope, size, medium and content, but one thing remains central: the joy of creation. It's this joy that I believe people experience when they see effective art, no matter the content. If the happiness of creation shines through, to me, that means I've created something worthwhile. Early in my journey as an artist and currently in my future scope as an artist, practice and challenge is necessary. I look to the future, and remember my past learning experiences and achievements to guide me towards success. This project presents the caliber of challenge needed to move my journey forward as far as artistic scope ad vision. I am excited to embark, with my partner Hector Diaz, on The New Jerusalem 5000 Mural. I integrally believe that art, in conjunction with language, shows the depth of human connection, conceptual learning, and a desire to further understand past, present, and future. To move forward, it is paramount to connect. To connect requires empathy. Empathy, above all, requires vulnerability through art and language.

Chris Strawn 1314 1st Street South Nampa, ID. 83651 March 9, 2015

Dear To whom it concerns:

My name is Chris Strawn. I am the owner of the building for this project. I am also the President of the Downtown Business Association, the Chairman of the board for the Canyon County Co-op, part of the Founding Team of the Nampa Art Walk that evolved into the Nampa Art Collective and the owner of The Dewey Restaurant and Lounge opening in downtown Nampa in April 2015.

I am a huge supporter of this project. As a downtown community we have been making strides in bringing public art to our downtown. Many of my fellow business owners are excited about this opportunity to add to the personality of Downtown Nampa. I feel that this project in particular really attaches itself to the history and roots of Nampa. The conceptual renderings are excellent in scope and detail.

I ask on behalf of Downtown Nampa and a strong supporter of the arts movement in Nampa that you strongly consider this project and this team.

Sincerely,

Chris Strawn Owner [email protected]
