AbsencesAbsences are costly to your child’s academic success. Each day missed breaks the teaching sequence and results in knowledge and skills lost. Please keep absences to a minimum by avoiding extended holidays and vacations.

We certainly understand absences due to illness, and we encourage you to keep your sick child home. Absences for religious holidays and funerals are excused.

If your child must be absent, please call the school by 9:00 a.m. If the Student Office has not heard from you, we shall call you.

In grades 5-8 we urge you to call the Student Office (by 9:00 a.m.) to request homework so that your child will not fall behind. These assignments may be picked up after 2:00 p.m. from the Student Office or sent home with a sibling or carpool member. We understand that there are times when your child may be too ill to complete the assignments. In such instances, we work with him upon his return to find a feasible solution. For an extended absence, the teachers may adjust the assignments. Our primary concern is the continued growth and success of your student.

TardiesParents, please be punctual. Arriving late to class can be an embarrassing situation for your child because he begins the day behind in his work. In addition, a student who needs to leave for a period of time during the day or who must depart before school has ended (for anything other than medical reasons) is counted as tardy. Please send a note to the teacher that day or in advance about your child’s late arrival or early departure.

If your child is tardy, please follow this plan:

In grades Pre-K - 2: A tardy student enters school through the Student Office to sign in and fill out a tardy slip for the teacher.

In grades 3-8: • A tardy student who arrives before 8:10 goes directly to his classroom

and fills out a tardy slip there.

• A tardy student who arrives after 8:10 checks in through the Student Office to fill out a tardy slip for the teacher.

We excuse tardies for doctor/dentist appointments for up to 2 hours. If your child is tardy due to a doctor or dentist appointment, please have him bring in a doctor’s excuse form when he signs in at the Student Office. Whenever possible, please schedule these appointments during after-school hours.

Early DeparturesEarly departures result in lost learning time for your child. Please work to keep these to a minimum. If you must take your child out of school early for an appointment, please follow this procedure:

1. The parent sends a note to the teacher in the morning or in advance.

2. The parent comes to the Student Office to sign out his/her child.

3. The Student Office calls the classroom to have the child sent to the office.

4. The parent and child leave together through the front entrance or the parking lot.

When the gates are open (before 9:00 a.m. and after 1:30 p.m.), all departures will take place through the parking lot. Early departures at other times will require parking in the green zone in front of the school. No early departures can occur between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.

Notes of ReleaseCarden Hall will dismiss a student only to his parents or to those people included on the Release Authorization Form. Send a note to the Student Office if your child is to leave with anyone other than those named on your Release Form.

34

Walkers and BikersThere are release forms in the Student Office to allow students to leave campus (alone or accompanied) to walk or to bike home. For safety reasons, please instruct your child to cross the street only at corners, never mid-block. Walkers and bikers will be dismissed at the same time that we load the late zone cars, at approximately 3:20 p.m.

Hot Lunch ProgramOur hot lunch program is provided by Cater Tots. You can order online for any number of days at www.catertots.com. Lunch needs to be ordered by 9:00 a.m. on the business day prior to service. Families must first set up a parent account using the school code (CARD33). Once the parent account is initiated, child accounts may be created, and you can begin ordering. For further questions, call Cater Tots at 714-751-8500.

If you choose to pack a lunch for your child, you may purchase milk from Carden Hall. Milk is provided as an optional service and is ordered on a yearly basis.

Classroom VisitsWe welcome and encourage you to visit your child’s classroom. The younger children, especially, enjoy having their parents visit. We shall schedule a 20-minute visit for you; please call the Student Office in advance for an appointment.

Classroom observations will be scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday. Observations for all grades except Pre-K will begin on Tuesday, October 3, and end on Thursday, May 3. Pre-K observations will start at the beginning of February.

Physical EducationA written release is required to excuse a child from P.E. participation. If your child is excused from P.E., he will also be excused from recess. Students with casts or splints will be limited to watching any outside activities.

35

MedicationCarden Hall does not dispense any medication. If your child (Pre-K - 4) uses an inhaler, or if your child (Pre-K - 8) needs to keep an epi-pen in the Student Office, you will need to fill out a Carden Hall Medical Release Form, which is available in the Student Office. Any other medications must be brought to school and administered by the parent in the Student Office. Students may not self-medicate except in grades 5-8 where inhalers may be kept in their backpacks.

Birthdays and Special CelebrationsIf you would like to provide treats for your child’s birthday, please call the Student Office several days in advance to reserve the day. Kindly limit your refreshments to easy-to-serve, non-refrigerated items, such as cupcakes, cookies, or brownies that do not include party favors or inedible decorations. In the junior high, treats may be shared at lunch time.

Please do not send treats for any occasion other than for your child’s birthday or half birthday; the school provides juice and treats for Halloween and Christmas. The last day to share treats is May 25 due to the numerous end-of-the-year activities.

Out of consideration for all students, we ask that invitations to private parties not be passed out at school. In addition, please do not ask the Student Office to assist in any distribution and/or collection of money or other items for any off-campus parties or events. Common courtesy precludes talking about exclusive off-campus activities at school.

Class rosters for each grade level will be emailed to you once a year by the third week of school. These private lists are intended for your family’s use only, not for solicitation, advertisement, or mass distribution.

Field Trips and Special EventsGrades Pre-K - 6An educational field trip is offered at each grade level. All grade levels also have a special activity, assembly, or program that highlights the literature or history that they are studying.

In addition, in sixth grade we offer Outdoor Science Camp. The students will travel to Idyllwild for a three-day/two-night visit to Astro Camp. There they will experience hands-on science, utilizing state-of-the-art labs and equipment to explore astronomy and physical science with the support of their highly-qualified staff and our own science teachers.

Grades 7-8To complement our strong academic program, we schedule many activities that enhance our junior high curriculum. Our parties and field trips are an integral part of the students’ experience, adding balance and fun to the school year. These functions help them gain self-confidence, social skills, and poise.

For the seventh grade we offer Outdoor Science Camp. Our students will travel to Catalina Island for a three-day/two-night marine science exploration. Guided by their highly-qualified staff and our own science teachers, the students will experience marine biology in a hands-on, fun environment.

Cell Phones and TechnologyStudents who bring cell phones to school must keep them turned off and in their backpacks while on campus. Should your child disregard this policy, his phone will be taken to the Student Office for you to retrieve.

Students are not allowed to take pictures or videos on campus without permission from the Administration. With the increase of social media, such footage poses a violation of the property rights and privacy of other students at Carden Hall. Suspension or expulsion may result from a violation of this policy.

Parent Communication The partnership between school and home is important to us. If you have questions or concerns about academic, behavioral, or social issues, please contact Mrs. Dablow ([email protected]) or Mrs. Bas ([email protected]) for support.

After-school ProgramsWe offer three after-school programs and several enrichment classes to help meet the needs of our families in a nurturing, well-supervised environment. Following are the specifics of each.

Pre-K/K EXTENSION (2:00-3:00 p.m.)This program extends the day of our Pre-K and Kindergarten students for one hour after the 2:00 dismissal. Children who walk around the parking lot and return to the classrooms after the 2:00 dismissal are counted as present in Pre-K/K Extension for that day. Extension activities may include quiet indoor play with toys, games, drawing, etc. There is no snack time for this brief stay (2:00-3:00).

You may pick up your child at any time from 2:05-2:30. Parents must go to the Student Office to sign their child out. There will be no dismissals from 2:30-3:00. At 3:00 the students will then depart with the regular 3:00 parking lot.

The Pre-K/K Extension charge is $5.00 per day with a minimum charge of $15.00 per month. You will receive a monthly statement showing this charge.

Kindergarten students who will be staying for the 3:00-6:00 p.m. Extended Care Program will walk through the parking lot at 3:00 and then report to the music room. Pre-K follows procedures listed in the Pre-K Parent Handbook. Any students who remain after the late zone will be signed into the Extended Care Program.

STUDY HALL (3:05-4:05 p.m.)A supervised Study Hall for fifth through eighth grade students is offered from Monday through Thursday. Because Study Hall is designed to be a place for quiet, uninterrupted study, students may not be picked up early. There is a $7.00 daily fee for this program. Students who are not picked up at 4:05 are immediately checked into Extended Care, and the Extended Care fees become applicable. In that circumstance, the Study Hall fee is waived.

MATH LAB (3:05-4:05 p.m.)Math Lab is a free, drop-in program for students in grades 5-8. It is offered on Monday through Thursday from 3:05 to 4:05. Students can get answers to their math questions or help with math homework before going to Study Hall or Extended Care.

EXTENDED CARE (3:00-6:00 p.m. daily)Our Extended Care Program is open to all students.

TIMES AND SCHEDULE – The following is an approximate schedule of the afternoon:

3:00-3:20 – Children participating in Extended Care report directly to the music room for check-in.

3:20-3:35 – Snack time and late zone check-in will occur in the courtyard.

3:35-4:30 (approximately) – Students play outside in organized games, special daily activities, and free play. Appropriate indoor activities will be scheduled when there is inclement weather.

Students will return to the music room after outdoor play. On occasional “special days” (i.e., rainy days, open houses, or junior high parties), Extended Care and check-out will be moved to an alternate room. A sign will be posted by the music room door informing parents of the change.

SNACKS – Please provide your child with a substantial, nutritious snack, which may include a beverage (no glass containers, please). No food or refrigeration will be provided by the school. We ask that each child bring his/her own snack; there is to be no sharing of food.

FEES 3:20-3:35 – The charge is $5.00 for each child left on campus after the

late zone pick-up.

3:35-4:30 – The charge is $15.00 per day for the first student and $10.00 for each additional sibling enrolled in the Extended Care Program.

After 4:30 – The charge becomes $18.00 per day for the first student and $12.00 for each additional sibling in the Extended Care Program.

You will receive a monthly statement showing the amount due for Extended Care.

PICK-UP AND CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES – You may pick up your child at any time until 6:00 p.m. from the music room, courtyard, or playground. The driver must come personally to sign for each child being released to his/her care. Children will only be released to drivers listed on the Carden Hall Release Authorization Form.

Students must check in to Extended Care after sports league practices/games or other activities if their parents are not there to pick them up promptly. A $5.00 fee will be charged for the first 15 minutes, $15.00 will be charged for 16-60 minutes, after which the full $18.00 fee will apply.

LATE FEE – Drivers who arrive after 6:00 p.m. will be charged $10.00 per child for every 5 minutes of delay.

Enrichment ClassesEnrichment classes are offered throughout the year on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. A schedule informing you of the classes and fees will be sent home.

Students enrolled in Enrichment Classes will go directly to the music room at 3:00.

Students not picked up at 4:30 will be checked into Extended Care, and an additional charge will apply.

Carden Hall Dress Code We consider Carden Hall to be your child’s place of business, and we feel that a traditional style of dress eliminates the distractions of current trends in clothing, hair styles, and accessories. Thank you for respecting and honoring all aspects of our Dress Code. Your support allows us to remain focused on our main purpose, educating your child.

You will notice that there are two different grade level groupings in our Dress Code: Pre-K - 4 and 5-8. Items marked with an asterisk do not need to be purchased from our supplier, Vicki Marsha Uniforms.

The dress code is also posted on our website: www.cardenhall.com.

Uniform PurchasingThe local Vicki Marsha Uniform store is located at 5292 Production Drive, Huntington Beach, CA 92649; the phone number is 714-895-6371. You may also order items online at www.vickimarsha.com. Our password is CHN1773.

Vicki Marsha has a very specific return/exchange policy. Special sizing is available (i.e., extra length, width, etc.), and problems with the fit of the clothes due to an unusual growth spurt will be handled by Vicki Marsha Uniforms with a size exchange. Please call them for details. In addition, if you have a problem with any item that you purchased, call Vicki Marsha Uniforms for assistance.

In order to ensure the receipt of the desired clothing by the opening of school in September, Vicki Marsha suggests that all ordering and purchasing be completed by August 1.

LabelingIt is crucial that you label all clothing and possessions. Put your child’s first initial and full last name clearly on the inside of all sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, and lunchboxes, or monogram them on the outside (please, no fabric paint or decorative touches). The local police departments strongly advise against having the first name visible on the outside of any child’s clothing.

Hair Styles, Hats, and Make-upHAIR STYLESHair should be tidy and well-groomed in keeping with our traditional environment. Hair is to be out of the eyes. Trendy hair styles are not acceptable. Any hair style not in keeping with this code will need to be changed. Please help us to maintain the standards so that hair does not become a distraction.

All: Colored or bleached hair is unacceptable. This includes any temporary, permanent, or spray-on products that alter hair color.

Girls: Hair wraps (sections of hair wrapped with colorful thread or yarn) and the use of beads is unacceptable.

Boys: The desired look is a neat and tidy one. Hair is to be kept above the collar, over the ears, and above the eyebrows. Keep full, curly hair trimmed in a traditional style. A #3 buzz cut is the shortest cut acceptable. Hair may be brushed up in front, but the overall spiked and/or the messy, “bed-head” look is not acceptable.

HATSOnly Carden Hall hats or Scouting caps are permitted. Carden Hall hats are available for purchase in room 6.

MAKE-UPMake-up (including colored lip gloss and mascara) is not to be worn at Carden Hall in Pre-K through sixth grade. Clear lip gloss and light foundation are acceptable only in the junior high. Clear nail polish and French manicures are only allowed in the junior high (no acrylic nails).
