Over1200students,mentors,andjudgeshaveparticipatedsince2011.

BIOMODHistoryTheBIOMODcompetitionwasbegunatHarvardUniversitybytheWyssInstituteforBiologicallyInspiredEngineering,whichconductedthecompetitionduringtheyears2011to2015.Themissionofthecompetitionwastoinspireagenerationofstudentstolearntoengineerbiomoleculesatthenanometerscale.In2016,BIOMODFoundationassumedmanagementofthecompetition.From2011–2015,theleadeventscoordinatorattheWyssInstitutewasJermaineReid,whowasinstrumentalinmakingBIOMODasuccess.JermaineworkedcloselywithMaryTolikas(DirectorofOperations),alongwithAlisonReggio,MaryWozniak,andCaitlinWells.TheBIOMODwebsiteandCompetitionManagementSoftwarewereoriginallydevelopedbyKristianSt.GabrielandByronHinebaugh.TheBIOMODFoundationiscurrentlyrunbyitsboardofdirectors:ShawnDouglas(UCSF),PaulRothemund(Caltech),KevanShokat(UCSF),MaryTolikas(WyssInsitute),andSatoshiMurata(TohokuUniversity),andsupportedbyRebeccaWheeler(leadorganizer),RobertPierce(legal),andRachelDulay(accounting).Thisyear,2017,marksthesecondtimethatBIOMODwillbehostedinCalifornia.
