Manhattanville Quick Facts:• 20 Varsity Sports• Over 300 Student-Athletes• 8 Sports Added Since 2007• 28 All-Americans (24 since 1999)• 5 Academic All-Americans (3 since 2011)• Over 5,000 Service Hours Per Year• Cumulative Department GPA over 3.150

A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation.

More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport last year, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established in the last six years alone.

And the teams at Manhattanville have proved themselves more than able to hold their own in an increasingly competitive athletic landscape. Fourteen of the school’s 20 intercollegiate programs earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, while both men’s hockey and women’s hockey teams received national rankings over the course of the year.

On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2012-13 as well. Field hockey junior Amanda DeChent was named the program’s fi rst-ever NFHCA All-American, giving Manhattanville at least one All-America selection in 13 of the last 14 years, while senior high jumper Bill Motherway was crowned the school’s fi rst champion at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Manhattanville also boasted two Freedom Conference Players of the Year to go with 45 combined All-Conference honorees. In addition, nearly 40 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas in recent years, including former baseball standout Dan Fiorito ’12, who signed a deal with the New York Yankees in August 2012.

But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.15 cumulative Athletic Department GPA for both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters and the fact that 14 Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, softball senior Jessica Van Galen was named the school’s third CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in the last three years, and she was also one of two CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees and one of 95 Academic All-Conference honorees for Manhattanville this year.

Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student-athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. As a result of their efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, making Manhattanville one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards, as well as earning the Community Partner Award from the Westchester Medical Center in 2013. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community.

“To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” - Jeanne d’Albret

Athletic AdministrationDirector of Athletics Keith LevinthalEleventh Year • Hobart ’95

Keith Levinthal returns for his 11th full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2013-14 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. Levinthal has been a part of Manhattanville in some capacity for 15 years, having previously served 12 seasons as head coach of the school’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program from 1999 until 2011.

Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 56 conference championships – 29 regular-season championships and 27 tournament titles – in the last decade. In that span, the program has also produced 32 conference Players of the Year, 18 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year.

As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders

in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings.

Manhattanville had another successful season with Levinthal at the helm in 2012-13. While no team was able to break through with an NCAA Tournament berth, 14 of 20 teams saw postseason play. On the fi eld, the department boasted its fi rst fi eld hockey All-American in program history in junior Amanda DeChent, to go with two Freedom Conference Players of the Year (DeChent and Jessica Van Galen) and 45 All-Conference honorees. Off the fi eld, Van Galen gave Manhattanville its third straight year with a CoSIDA Academic All-American thanks to her spot on the second team, while she was also one of a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and one of the school’s 95 student-athletes recognized by their respective conferences for academic success.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season titles and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team also advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history.

Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their fi nal season with the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically.

In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.

A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included:

Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student-athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.

Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni.

Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

With the exception of the Valiant men’s and women’s hockey teams, all 20 Manhattanville varsity sports have competed under the umbrella of the Middle Atlantic Conferences since joining the conference prior to the 2007-08 school year.

Founded in 1912 and now in its second century of existence, the MAC is one of the oldest existing intercollegiate athletic associations in the United States. An umbrella organization consisting of three conferences – Commonwealth, Freedom and Middle Atlantic – the MAC sponsors 23 Division III sports and boasts 18 current member schools, including 2012 additions Hood and Stevenson.

With the exception of cross country, indoor/outdoor track and women’s golf, who compete under the MAC banner, all Manhattanville non-hockey sports compete in the very competitive Freedom Conference. As a result, every Valiant athletic team receives the opportunity to annually vie for

a conference title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

2013 Manhattanville Men’s Soccer Media Guide 7

The Manhattanville men’s soccer team, under third year head coach Gregg Miller is hoping to have another successful year in the Freedom Conference, but will look to a bevy of newcomers to supplement a small returning core in the hopes of finishing the season atop the conference standings for a third straight season.

The Valiants finished with an overall record of 8-7-4 during the 2012 campaign that included a conference-best record of 5-1-1 during the regular season. Miller was named the Freedom Conference’s Coach of the Year after leading his team to its second straight top-seed in the conference tournament.

Miller will be working with a team going through a major transition from last season, as the Valiants return just nine players overall from the 2012 season. In addition, the Valiants are returning a total of two goals out of the 27 scored from last season, meaning that a lot of new faces will have to take on the role of putting the ball into the back of the net in order for the team to succeed.

Despite the lack of returning depth, Manhattanville was still picked to finish second in the Freedom Conference preseason poll, as the Valiants earned 39 points and one first-place vote to trail only two-time defending champion Misericordia (53 points, three first-place votes). King’s (Pa.) and Eastern tied for third place in the very tight voting, as both teams earned 37 points and combined for the other four first-place votes (King’s three, Eastern one).

FORWARD

The Valiants’ biggest question mark headed into the season will be at forward, as the squad lost all their starting forwards from last year and will need new players to pick up the slack immediately on the offensive end. A sextet of freshmen will vie for the starting roles this season and will be counted upon for instant offense, as Diego Gutierrez (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), Rob Hammerle (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), Ryan Kenny (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Dan Lorandini (Garden City, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial),

Viron Protoulis (Cape Town, South Africa/Reddam House) and Wes Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) all join the squad in 2013.

MIDFIELD

The midfield position also lost a lot of starters from last season and will need a combination of returners stepping up and newcomers stepping in to fortify the middle of the field. Junior Ezra Kauffman-Rogoff (Washington, D.C./Edmund Burke) is one of the primary midfielders making his way back into the Valiants roster after starting 11 of the 16 games during his sophomore season and hopes to make more of an impact this upcoming year.

Also returning at the midfield position will be sophomore Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), who started in five games last year. Silber will be competing against seniors Thomas Wagner (Guatemala City, Guatemala/German School) and Eduardo Salgado (Houston, Texas/YES College Prep) for a starting spot.

Incoming freshman Eddy Garcia (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Omar Parra (Atlanta, Ga./Gulport (Miss.)) and Sam Ramirez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Sandra Day O’Connor) will also look to make a major impact for the Valiants this season.

DEFENSE

Headlining the returners is primarily in the backfield. Junior Alem Pelinkovic (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) and sophomore Kevin O’Reilly (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) made a strong impact defensively for the Valiants during their first seasons with the team in 2013 and look to be focal points of the defense again in 2013. Pelinkovic started 18 of 19 games last season, while O’Reilly started in every game for the Valiants during his first season on the team.

Sophomore Dylan Moser (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) will make the move to defense this season and will be joined by a strong group of six newcomers looking to make their way into the Valiants starting lineup. Juniors Michael Alcaraz (Burbank, Calif./Burbank) and Yeyson Caballeros (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax) come to Purchase after two years playing at Pasadena City College, while freshmen Jordan Daniel (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach), Simon Espinosa (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River), Jesper Hjalm (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddingegymnasiet) and Christian Mendez (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) also hope to make an early impact.

GOALKEEPER

Manhattanville has a few solid options for the goaltender position this season. Sophomore Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) was named to the All-Freedom Conference second team for the 2012 season after registering a record of 6-4-4. Singson finished the year with an .812 save percentage and a 1.02 goals against average, the latter of which was the third best all-time for a Manhattanville goalkeeper in a single season.

Classmate Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) is also back as a goaltender for the Valiants after starting in four contests last season and looks to make a run at the starting spot again, and freshman Sean McAllister (West Islip, N.Y./

West Islip) is hoping to get some playing time as well for Manhattanville.

SCHEDULE

Manhattanville will kick off their season in Salisbury, Md., at Salisbury’s Elmer Lord Classic, facing off against Salisbury on August 30 at 3:00 p.m. and St. Mary’s (Md.) on August 31 at 1:30 p.m.

The team returns for their home opener on September 4 against Lehman at GoValiants.com Field at 4:00 p.m. Manhattanville will host Muskingum two days later on September 6 for a night game at 7:45 p.m.

The next seven contests are against non-conference teams, including home contests against Vassar (September 11), Stevenson (September 21), and Merchant Marine (October 2). The Freedom Conference schedule starts on October 5, as the Valiants welcome DeSales to Purchase for a 5:00 p.m. start, followed by a meeting with reigning Freedom Conference champion Misericordia in Dallas, Pa., on October 12.

After the Valiants take on Misericordia, there will be five straight conference games. This includes key home matches against Eastern (October 16), FDU-Florham (October 22), and Wilkes (October 26).

Manhattanville will hope to continue competing at the Freedom Conference Tournament, which begins with the semifinal round on November 5 before the championship game on November 9. All games are held at the home field of the higher seed, and the winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Tournament.

Facilities

Completed just before the start of the 2005 fall season, GoValiants.com Field is one of the top outdoor facilities in the Northeast, and proudly plays home to the Manhattanville men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. Surrounded by a four-pillar lighting system, scoreboard, fully equipped press box and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 20 Manhattanville athletic teams to make use of the turf for training, practice and games. The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high – let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other Division III programs can do with regularity. The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access, allowing for live video broadcasts of Valiant athletic contests through GoValiants.TV and audio broadcasts via WMVL 88.1 FM, as well as live stats produced for every Valiant home game. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system used for pre- and in-game announcements is also housed in the press box. Adjacent to the GoValiants.com Field is another valuable outdoor athletic venue, Manhattanville’s outdoor grass field. The regulation-size grass field was rebuilt in 2005 and has the ability to host several soccer matches during the year. While not equipped with lights, the grass field does possess its own scoreboard and PA capabilities, which can be accessed through the press box at GoValiants.com Field. With both turf and natural grass options, the Valiants hold a unique advantage over every other team in the conference in that they can choose a field surface to suit the type of game the team wants to play on that day. Kennedy GymnasiumDedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President

John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the home of the Manhattanville men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs, while also serving as the day-to-day operational home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics.

Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, has balcony and ground-level seating and standing room for nearly 1,000 spectators and the intimate atmosphere gives Manhattanville teams a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season.

The Kennedy Gym court itself was completely torn up and resurfaced in June 2013 thanks to a sizeable donation from the “Sunday Run” basketball group. The school partnered with J & J Gym Floors for the new floor, which eliminates the multitude of dead spots that plagued the 55-year old floor while also creating crisp, new graphics and a vibrant new paint job on the court itself.

In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy facility also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

The offices of all Manhattanville coaches and athletic administrators are also located within the Kennedy walls, making the facility the primary meeting spot for all of Manhattanville’s varsity sports teams throughout the school year.

In addition to the basketball and volleyball arena, the Kennedy Gym building also houses the Valiants’ strength & conditioning and sports medicine departments, a swimming pool, multiple locker rooms and office facilities. The entire facility received a major overhaul during the 2012-13 school year, completely renovating almost every square inch of the venerable building. The bottom floor was completely renovated in 2012-13, including new and im-proved locker room facilities for Valiant and visiting teams. All Manhattanville locker rooms now feature new wall-to-wall carpeting, individualized wooden locker stalls with personalized nameplates, customized team white boards and video projection systems installed in every room, while the shower facilities were also given a much-needed upgrade. As a result, the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The Kennedy lobby area also received a major facelift in the spring of 2013. A new floor was installed and a large collage showcasing some of the school’s many championship teams was created, while new posters recognize all of Manhattanville’s conference championships as well as the school’s long list of All-Americans, Players of the Year and other individual award winners. Team photos of all 20 varsity sports also hang in the main lobby as well in addition to large-scale photos of some of the College’s most prolific student-athletes, while a newly created Hall of Fame display will also be unveiled in 2014 as well. As a whole, the Kennedy Gym renovations help Manhattanville keep up with the top teams in the country and allow the school to continue its unique home-field advantage both on the fields of play and in the locker room.

Manhattanville College, located just north of New York City in thriving Westchester County, has been educating young people on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over 150 years. With only 1,700 undergraduate students, each student is able to make a personal contribution to the campus community in more than 50 areas of study and 50 campus clubs. Also one of the most diverse campuses in the area, Manhattanville attracts students from 48 states and 76 countries.

SCHOOL HISTORYFounded in 1841 in a three-story building

on Houston Street of Manhattan’s Lower East Side as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic boarding school for girls, Manhattanville has been educating students in the New York area for over 150 years.

Six years after its founding in 1847, the academy relocated to an area just north of New York City on a hill overlooking the village of Manhattanville. Destroyed by fi re in 1888, the academy was rebuilt on the same foundation and continued to grow both in curriculum and physical environment. In March of 1917 – 76 years after its founding as an academy – Manhattanville was chartered as a college by the New York State Board of Regents, allowing the school to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees for the fi rst time.

Thirty-f ive years later, in 1952, Manhattanville moved to its current location in Purchase on the former estate of New York Tribune publisher and Ambassador to England Whitelaw Reid. The estate included a mansion, Ophir Hall, which has since been renamed Reid Castle and serves as the

centerpiece of Manhattanville’s picturesque Westchester campus.

Life at Manhattanville blends the leisurely pace of suburbia with the rich cultural resources and fast pace of New York City, which is only thirty minutes away.

THE CORE VALUESProudly a value-oriented liberal arts college

for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.”

Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by:

• Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers;

• Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and

• Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community.

The architectural and administrative center of Manhattanville’s campus is Reid Castle, which was built in 1892 and overlooks both the quadrangle and the school’s athletic fi elds. On a clear day, you can stand atop the castle and see the skyscrapers of New York City in the distance to the southwest.

A TRADITION OF SERVICECo-educational since 1969 and non-

denominational in its governance since 1971, Manhattanville’s original vision lives on in the tradition of service begun by the Society of the Sacred Heart. This tradition, which preceded the college’s charter, determined the character the school would have: a fi rm belief in the liberalizing effect of the liberal arts, a lively sense of tradition, a wide-ranging interest in the most humane manifestations of the human spirit, and a continuing effort to enhance the local community and to accept responsibility for this segment of human history.

As a result, countless students are involved annually in a number of community service and social action programs. Last year, Manhattanville’s students contributed over 30,000 hours of service while gaining valuable experience in such areas as management, teaching and advocacy.

At the heart of Manhattanville’s ethic of community service and service learning is the Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice. The center, which coordinates many of Manhattanville’s myriad service programs, serves as the coordinator, catalyst and incubator for community outreach, cultural, leadership and spiritual initiatives both across the Manhattanville campus and beyond.

In addition, the Connie Hogarth Center

for Social Action works closely with the Departments of Sociology and Political Science and helps the next generation of college-educated activists acquire the practical skills and knowledge necessary for work in some fi eld of social change.

NEW YORK CITYWhile on the school’s beautiful 100-acre

campus, students are only a 30-minute car or Metro North train ride from New York City, giving them the chance to blend the leisurely pace of suburban life in Westchester with the most populous and exciting city in the United States.

Manhattanville’s location offers students a unique opportunity to take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Whether you want to enjoy a Broadway show, catch a professional sports event, tour a museum or art gallery, shop at the world’s best stores, dine at the country’s best restaurants, or simply stroll around and take in the city’s many well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or Times Square, New York City offers something for everyone to enjoy.

The school’s proximity to the worldwide leader in fi nance, entertainment, culture and more also offers Manhattanvil le undergraduate and graduate students a unique and exciting opportunity for jobs and

internships both in the city itself and in the thriving New York City suburbs, including right here in Purchase!

MY SOLDIERManhattanville’s most well-known social

action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour.

Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging: “It was the letters that kept me going,” he said. “From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.”

When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached then-College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.

Participants in the My Soldier program, who were not limited to Manhattanville students, sent letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops.

A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider was wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.

In the classroom, students have the opportunity to choose over 50 different fi elds of undergraduate study at Manhattanville; outside of it, there are at least 50 extracurricular clubs and organizations available for students to discover and cultivate their passions.
