PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello ASHRAE Houston Chapter!
Our October meeting on Air Distribution System Design went very well last month as did the Skeet Shoot on October 3rd. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and who attended both events. We have a busy November coming and I am looking forward to it all! I am encouraging everyone to invite someone to the annual golf tournament, it would be great to see some new faces. In addition, if you know someone who would benefit from the November topic below, please extend an invitation. Personal invitations from us are usually how we can grow our organization.
NOVEMBER MEETING: How UV-C Can Reduce HVAC Energy, Maintenance Costs and Improve IAQ.
• Speaker is Dean Saputa
• Thursday, November 14th, 4:00 – 7:00 PM, Hess Building (details online with social time and cash bar before and after meeting).
• To save time and money, make sure you take advantage of buying a season pass (link is here).
This presentation briefly describes what UV-C energy is and how it’s produced. It touches on how UV-C has been used for nearly 100 years to destroy microorganisms in water on surfaces and in air. It will illustrate how UV-C is currently used to provide a “Green,” non-chemical method of stripping dirt and grime from coil and drain pan surfaces without residue. Case studies will be provided along with the simple methods used to validate their aging HVAC systems return to near new performance. Suggestions will be made on how to take advantage of this increased performance to save energy. We will also discuss current standards and guidelines within ASHRAE, UL and ISO.
Mr. Saputa has been active for over 25 years in the HVAC industry with an emphasis in air and surface treatment and cleaning technol-ogy. He is a managing partner with UV Resources, a leading manufacturer of UV-C products for the HVAC&R industry that provide sur-face and airborne microbial control and organic materials decontamination. Mr. Saputa is a member of ASHRAE and is actively in-volved in several committees; he is a past Chair of ASHRAE TC 2.9 (UV Air and Surface Treatment); was Chair of ASHRAE SPC-185 (method of test for UV lamps); founder and secretary of ASHRAE GPC-37. He is a contributing author of the 2019 ASHRAE System and Equipment Handbook Chapter 17. He was also a contributing author for ASHRAE's position document titled "Filtration and Air Cleaning" that was published in January 2015.
UPCOMING EVENT: ASHRAE Houston Fall Golf Tournament Monday, November 18, 2019 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Weston Lakes Country Club 32611 FM 1093, Fulshear, TX 77441 281-346-1967 www.westonlakes.net
Get your game in full swing!! A great day is planned with awesome golf, food, drinks, raffle prizes and awards (including Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Best Balls and more). This annual golf tournament is one of our largest fundraisers for ASHRAE Research Promotion, so your stewardship is appreciated.
Registration is $650.00 for a team of 4 players.
Mulligans available at $10.00 a stroke (up to 10 strokes per person)

LAST MONTH’S MEETING On October 13th, we welcomed Dan Int
-Hout to our monthly chapter meeting at
the Hess Building to discuss Air Distribu-
tion System Design. Dan outlined the de-
sign and selection of air outlets and air
control devices, as well as VAV and
powered terminals– which sometimes
are tied to the outlet selected. He cov-
ered situations where it is appropriate to
use the Air Diffusion Performance Index
found in the ASHRAE handbooks, and
when other means of selection is neces-
sary for your design.

HISTORY HISTORY OF MCMILLAN JAMES EQUIPMENT COMPANY
McMillan James Equipment Company (MJEC) as we know
it today was founded in 1987 by its current president Mark
McMillan. The company’s roots, however, actually date
back to the early 1950’s when McMillan Equipment Com-
pany (MECO), a Houston based manufacturer’s rep firm,
was first established by Hugh D. McMillan Jr.
McMillan and Associates was formed in 1987 when Mark
McMillan took over the Dallas -Fort Worth operations of
McMillan Equipment Company . In 1999 the name was
changed to McMillan Choate & Associates (MCA) when
Lonnie Choate and Mark McMillan joined forces.
In 2007 Lonnie Choate sold his interest back to the compa-
ny. The name was then changed a final time to McMillan
James Equipment Company when Mark James and Robert
McMillan purchased ownership positions and were elevat-
ed to the Partner level.
The company continues to grow with offices established in
Houston, Austin, and Lubbock.
Throughout the history of McMillan James Equipment Company, they have always been closely tied with ASHRAE.
Hugh McMillan Jr. was very involved with ASHRAE (then known as ASHVE) as a student in college, and worked his
way up to be the Houston Chapter President and went on to be the Society President. Shelley Zhao of the Dallas
office worked her way through the chairs to be the Dallas Chapter President in 2012-2013. Eric Borders, also of the
Dallas office, is currently the Dallas Chapter Treasurer and is on track to become the Chapter President in 2021-2022.
Various employees are currently committee chairs for their respective chapters.

SUSTAINABILITY
Dirt on the face of diffusers or the immediately surrounding ceiling is called smudging. It usually happens on ceil-
ing diffusers that discharge air parallel to the ceiling. Many times, occupants think that this smudging implies dirty
coils or ducts. Normally, that is not the case.
When air jets leave the diffuser face, they connect themselves to the ceiling. This is called Coanda Effect. The
ASHRAE HANDBOOK HVAC SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT 2016 chapter 20, page 2 describes Coanda effect as,
“An airstream moving adjacent to or in contact with a wall or ceiling creates a low-pressure area
immediately adjacent to that surface, causing the air to remain in contact with the surface sub-
stantially throughout the length of throw. This Coanda effect, also referred to as the surface or ceil-
ing effect, counteracts the drop of a horizontally projected cool airstream.”
The Handbook further states,
“Supply airflow from an outlet entrains room air into the jet. This entrained air increases the total air
in the jet stream.”
So, as the jet crosses the ceiling it is constantly entraining more room air into the jet. The air velocity creates the
low-pressure area. The higher the velocity, the lower the pressure. The highest velocity is closest to the diffuser dis-
charge area. For perforated diffusers it is across the entire face of the diffuser. The handbook also states,
“Smudging is the deposition of particles on the air outlet or a surface near the outlet. Particles are
entrained into the primary discharge jet and impinged onto the device or ceiling surface in areas
of lower pressure. Smudging tends to be heavier in high-traffic areas near building entrances,
where particulates are brought into a space.”
Actual research was done on smudging. Owens Corning tested a two-slot linear diffuser in a large box using Na-
tional Bureau of Standards standard dirt (from ASTM 52.1) in 1975, and they found that the dirt impingement on
the diffuser and adjacent ceiling tiles was not from the supply duct but rather from room dirt entrained by the low
pressure high velocity jet. So, if your air conditioning system is well-maintained and your filters are cleaned or
changed regularly, there will be very little smudging, if any, related to your air conditioning equipment. Smudging
can normally be reduced by cleaning your carpets and floors and reducing dirt carried into the building.
The dirt on the diffusers can usually be easily wiped off with a damp cloth or disinfecting wipe. Be sure to dry the
diffuser after cleaning to reduce the possibility of more dirt impinging on the surface of the diffuser.
