inent on the planet with the least amount of human interaction. Alarmist much? Iknow this will be the unpopular, most down voted opinion, but I don't care, asyou can see, I'm not a karma whore. Tourism should be allowed, but I would agreethat it should be regulated. But according to who's regulations? American? Russian? Argentinian? It's a continent without a governing country. Maybe there should be a consortium of countries that can agree on how to best regulate tourism, but I don't think it should be stopped.Edit 5th largest.permalinkparent[]Wildwoodywoodpecker 8 points 2 hours agoSo you're saying we should invade Antartica?permalinkparent

If people can experience the place and share that experience with others then we will build a collective willto preserve the place. This is the same reason we let people into national parks: without the ability to visit, we would forget their value in a generation, andwould cease to bother protecting them.permalinkparent[]connor9 3 points an hour agoThe Antarctic Treaty (http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/about_antarctica/geopolitical/treaty/) nations already set limits on numbers of ships and numbers of touriststo antarctica. This is regulated through an association of tour operators calledIAATO - http://iaato.org/homeYou can read a reasonable summary about tourism operations here: http://www.anta

rctica.ac.uk/about_antarctica/tourism/faq.php The reports on that page are from2008 but the give an overview of how the process works. For up-to-date stats youcan get them straight from IAATO http://iaato.org/en_GB/tourism-statistics

The main issue about impact from tourism is that there are very few spots in theAntarctic where ships can make landings. While the continent is quite large theareas where tourism happens is actually quite small and they obviously target the interesting bits like penguin colonies, historic huts and interesting geographical features. The tour operators do try to take the environmental considerations seriously as they market Antarctica as a pristine and untouched place. It's hard to sell that when things are trampled. As part of the Antarctic Treaty parti

cipating nations do inspections of facilities and tour operators all the time but it's very difficult to enforce. Other than the birds and mammals, most life inAntarctic grows very slowly due to the cold conditions. The bit John Oliver wastalking about in terms of treading on moss is a real concern as the damage takes ages to repair.John Oliver didn't cover it but the research that was being talked about was stating that the current regulations on limits to tourism aren't enough. They needto be scaled back. The antarctic tour operators obviously don't want to do thatas it would reduce their business but they are trying to implement environmentalregulations. The point the australian study was trying to make is that the self-regulation doesn't seem to be enough. The idea isn't to stop completely but tocontinue increasing the environmental protections that the tour operators follow

and reduce the numbers of landings and visitors. That's the part that could behard to do.I don't know the exact paper the news clip was talking about but Australian is big into the human impacts in antarctica research - http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/97469/2/WP%20173.pdf, http://www.antarctica.gov.au/environment/human-impacts-in-antarcticapermalinkparent[]ItsDarts 11 minutes agoAll very good points, thanks for this.permalinkparent[]draggoon 27 minutes agoYeah. Other would rathar go to more quiet places where they can hear themselves thinkand escape the constant pull of others who want their time and energy.permalinkparent[]strummingmusic 6 minutes agoIt ends up being a strange mix of quasi-solitude and social interaction though, since you will spend time stuck within ~25m of everyone else on a ship to get there and back, and once you arrive your shore visits are highly regulated...basically hiking in a line and snapping the same photos as everyone else in your group. I was a wildlife guide in Antarctica for a few years. I love your comment though (and think it's very important for people to spend time in quiet places). Even with the strict regulation aspect of Antarctic tourism people are given the chance to visit the complete opposite of where they live, and that can only helpby giving them perspective. On my trips I'd always try to do "a few minutes of s

ilence" as a group while onshore so they could experience the weight of true peace & quiet.permalinkparent[]atxy89 3 points 3 hours agoI would totally visit Antarctica just for the hell of it. I spent my 21st birthday off the coast of Argentina on way to Antartica. It wasa Russian ship operated by a Canadian tour company. It ends up being a strange mix of quasi-solitude and social interaction though, since you will spend time stuck within ~25m of everyone else on a ship to get there and back, and once you arrive your shore visits are highly regulated...basic

The Antarctic Treaty (http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/about_antarctica/geopolitical/treaty/) nations already set limits on numbers of ships and numbers of touriststo antarctica. This is regulated through an association of tour operators calledIAATO - http://iaato.org/homeYou can read a reasonable summary about tourism operations here: http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/about_antarctica/tourism/faq.php The reports on that page are from2008 but the give an overview of how the process works. For up-to-date stats you

can get them straight from IAATO http://iaato.org/en_GB/tourism-statisticsThe main issue about impact from tourism is that there are very few spots in theAntarctic where ships can make landings. As part of the Antarctic Treaty participating nations do inspections of facilities and tour operators all the time but it's very difficult to enforce. Other than the birds and mammals, most life inAntarctic grows very slowly due to the cold conditions. The bit John Oliver wastalking about in terms of treading on moss is a real concern as the damage take

s ages to repair.John Oliver didn't cover it but the research that was being talked about was stating that the current regulations on limits to tourism aren't enough. They needto be scaled back. The antarctic tour operators obviously don't want to do thatas it would reduce their business but they are trying to implement environmentalregulations. The point the australian study was trying to make is that the self-regulation doesn't seem to be enough. The idea isn't to stop completely but tocontinue increasing the environmental protections that the tour operators followand reduce the numbers of landings and visitors. That's the part that could behard to do.I don't know the exact paper the news clip was talking about but Australian is big into the human impacts in antarctica research - http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/97469/2/WP%20173.pdf, http://www.antarctica.gov.au/environment/human-im

since you will spend time stuck within ~25m of everyone else on a ship to get there and back, and once you arrive your shore visits are highly regulated...basically hiking in a line and snapping the same photos as everyone else in your group. On my trips I'd always try to do "a few minutes of silence" as a group while onshore so they could experience the weight of true peace & quiet.permalinkparent[]atxy89 3 points 3 hours agoI would totally visit Antarctica just for the hell of it. The point the australian study was trying to make is that the self-regulation doesn't seem to be enough. The idea isn't to stop completely but tocontinue increasing the environmental protections that the tour operators followand reduce the numbers of landings and visitors. That's the part that could behard to do.I don't know the exact paper the news clip was talking about but Australian is big into the human impacts in antarctica research - http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/97469/2/WP%20173.pdf, http://www.antarctica.gov.au/environment/human-impacts-in-antarcticapermalinkparent[]ItsDarts 11 minutes agoAll very good points, thanks for this.permalinkparent

It wasa Russian ship operated by a Canadian tour company. My grandma asked me if I wanted to go and it didn't sound like an experience I would have many chances at. Also, it was an elder hostel trip. That part was weird. This was more than 15 years ago so the tourism thing has been going on for a while.permalinkparent
