Questions and AnswersBay High’s One-to-One Chromebook program

Why does my child need a Chromebook to take home?

What if the Chromebook is lost or damaged?

What is the cost?

What kind of apps are on the Chromebook?

When will we get the Chromebook?

What is a Chromebook?A Chromebook is a laptop device that runs the Google Chrome operating system. This means all student work is saved in “the Cloud” and can be accessed from any machine simply by logging into their Bay Schools account. Bay is using Google Apps for Education with Google Drive as the cloud storage. A few of the Google tools provided include Docs, Sheets, and Slides; a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation tool, respectively.

Why does my child need his or her own Chromebook?Students learn in a variety of ways, and they need the appropriate tools to accomplish learning in an efficient and relevant way. By putting the technology into the hands of the students, we are allowing them to determine how to use the tool to help them be successful learners. Providing each student with a device ensures that they have access to these resources whenever they need them.

What does one-to-one mean for my student? Each student in grades 9 and 10 will be issued a Chromebook in mid-August for the 2017-18 school year (and grades 9-12 beginning in 2018-19). Students will be able to take the device home each night. They are also responsible for having it fully charged and bringing it to class just like any other school supply.(In grades K-8, students continue to have regular access to Chromebooks during the school day via classroom carts.)

This August, Bay High students in grades 9 and 10 will be issued their own Chromebook computers. Just as students

keep their textbooks and take themhome for their studies, they will keep

these sturdy, hardworking devices until the end of the school year.

Are there fees?High school students who are issued a Chromebook will be charged a student fee of $90 per year, which includes a higher technology fee. Students in grades 11 and 12 will not have an increase in their $72 student fee for the 2017-18 school year.

What if my child forgets to bring the Chromebook to school?Students can borrow a Chromebook from the media center to use for the duration of the school day as long as spares are available. Students who habitually abuse this policy may be denied access to this service.

What if the Chromebook runs out of battery power during the school day?The battery life of each Chromebook is 8-10 hours, so if a Chromebook is charged overnight, there should be no need to charge it during the school day. However, if a Chromebook does run out of charge during the school day, a limited number of quick charge stations will be available in the Media Center. Students are not to bring their chargers to school.

What if I do not have internet access at home?Chromebooks can be used in an off-line mode to continue working on existing projects. Google Apps can be used off line, and work will be re-synced with cloud storage once the Chromebook re-connects to the internet. Students can also use Chromebooks with public internet access at libraries, restaurants, etc.

What if the Chromebook is damaged, lost or stolen?Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook they have been assigned by the district. Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must be reported on a Google Form in the Library, and the device should be given to a librarian or technology staff member as soon as possible. Do not take district-owned Chromebooks to an outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance. Do not try to make repairs yourself.

The devices will be maintained by Bay’s IT staff. Only district IT staff can perform repairs on the devices. Normal part failures or damage outside of the control of the student are dealt with differently. The judgment call is left up to the district’s technology staff. If damage occurs to the device that requires a part replacement, then students are responsible for the replacement costs according to the repair cost grid at right.

If damage occurs to the Chromebook, students and parents/guardians agree to be responsible for fees as follows:

• First Accidental Damage Incident Per Year: There will be no additional fee for one accidental damage incident per year. In the event of an accidental damage incident, parents will be notified.

• Second and Subsequent Damage Incident Per Year: Full price of repair or replacement will be the responsibility of the student and/or parent/guardian, and a meeting with an administrator may be required before Chromebooks are

re-issued.• Intentional Damage: Full price of repair or replacement will

be the responsibility of the student and/or parent/guardian, and a meeting with an administrator will be required before a device will be re-issued. Appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken as described in the Student Handbook.

• Lost/Stolen Device: A fee of $300 will be collected for a lost device, and a parent/guardian meeting with an administrator will be required. A fee of $45 will be collected for a lost or damaged AC adapter. Devices reported as stolen outside of school require that parents notify police and provide a copy of an official police report to the school administration. If lost or stolen, the computer will be remotely disabled so it cannot be used by anyone other than the student to whom it was issued.

How do the internet safety filters work at school and at home? While on campus, each Chromebook passes through the district web filter. Our filter is programmed to block inappropriate content as much as possible. If your child is using the Chromebook at home or at a public library, or at any other non-district location, content will be filtered based on the off-campus wireless settings like any other mobile device. If logged into a school account, all activity is monitored. Parents, teachers, and network administrators can check the browsing history of student Google accounts in the Chrome browser settings.

Are students allowed to use the Chromebooks for things that don’t pertain to school? The primary purpose is of the Chromebook is educational. Although access will not be restricted to educational use only, the Chromebook is property of Bay Village City Schools and therefore subject to inspection, similar to a school locker. Inappropriate use would be “flagged” and then the Student Code of Conduct would be applied.
