How old are you? This question was asked so we know exactly what area to target when we make our product. The age of our audience would determine how far we could go. For example, amount of blood and gore. From the chart we are able to see that the 18 year olds to the over 25 year olds will be the range at which we will target our product at. The majority are the late teens and that would mean we should use characters that they can relate to in the trailer.

Are you Male or Female?

The result showed that women have more of an interest in what goes into horror films more than the men. We will still try to aim our product to both genders and not leave any gaps.

How often do you watch horror films?

We noticed that most of the people who answered our questionnaire watched horror films monthly and we were surprised that some watched weekly. Focusing on these facts we concluded that they watch horrors frequently enough and have seen enough to know what they want/expect from a good horror film. So we find a way to keep within their expectations if any.

What is your most preferred horror sub-genre?

This question was devised to help us get an understanding of what the majority want, help us have a sub-genre to work with and make our planning a little easier. It would also ultimately help us decide if we will be making a structuralist horror or a post-modern horror. We came to find that we would have to make a structuralist horror as 56.4% preferred slasher/gore, so our aim would be to make a film that emulates other horrors such as the ‘Saw’ sagas, ‘The Shining’ and ‘Texas chainsaw massacre’.

How do you enjoy watching movies?

This question is more about how our target audience would best consume our product and the profitability of our product. It is good to see that the majority would pay to go to the cinema and watch the horror, buy DVDs to watch on TV or through already paid for digi-boxes. Online is still close in the races and rightly so as the internet is central to how society can interact with different things and mediums, also through technological convergence.

What is your preferred setting for a horror film?

The setting of the film is one of the most important parts, so we had this question based on that. The options were generic settings used in a majority of horror films (structuralist theory), we found that the woods and hospital were what the audience wanted. However, we could only use the setting that is easily accessible so we chose the woods. Now we must try to keep in mind slasher horrors that take place in the woods such as ‘Friday the 13th’.

What gender should the villain be? What gender should the survivor be?

Should the villain be seen or remain hidden?

Although we had already found that a majority preferred a structuralists horror, we had these questions to double check what exactly is asked. It indeed followed the structuralists theory because a majority of horrors today have male villains who are seen or seen with the mask on and female survivors (Clover’s Final Girl Theory).

What is the most effective weapon for a horror film?

This was more about what weapon the villain should wield and possibly what the victims would have to defend themselves. As majority said a machete/knife would be the best option use, this is also a structuralists way of thinking. It is clear that the fair amount that chose others were more for the post-modern type films whereby there are guns in a horror film. The audience that chose the chainsaw would expect the villain to wild that because such a heavy power tool in the wrong hands would amount to a lot of blood shed and emphasises the villains strength.

Overall

From the results it appears that we will be following a structuralists horror with the slasher sub-genre. The age range suggests that we should have teenage characters of whom a female will survive and a male villain who has a machete/knife with a very powerful appearance and character.
