User Guide

Whether you are organising a pub quiz, school quiz or community quiz during Small Charity Week this guide is here to help you make sure your event is a huge success!

Before the QuizPracticalities

Choose a date, time and venue for your quiz

Check the venue has the equipment you will need (PA system, microphone, table for the quizmaster and teams etc)

Decide on an entrance fee (per person or per team).

Consider refreshments for guests – food and drink. To increase income at the event, you could even consider hosting a meal for a small fee.

Choose your quizmaster, and make sure they have a dry run of asking the questions first

Prepare all your handouts – the quiz pack has been made adaptable so that you can include your own charity logos for your event

Make sure you have plenty of copies of the blank answer-sheets, pens etc

Decide on how many people you will allow per team

Decide how you are going to mark the quizzes e.g. teams swapping sheets or all marked by the quiz master

Finalise the quiz format (timing of breaks, how long you will allow per round etc)

If you do not have the time or resources to host an event, you can always circulate the quiz (minus the answers!) to your network via email or handout for them to fill in their own time. They can be asked to make a set donation in exchange for entrance into the competition.

Publicity/ Marketing

Arrange to have posters made if necessary

Mention in your newsletters, websites, emails, and social media announcements etc. On twitter, use the hashtag #SmallCharityWeek

Set up a Facebook event and invite all your friends and family

Post details of your event on the Small Charity Week website simply by filling in this short form http://smallcharityweek.com/register-events/

Encourage your supporters/the local community to get involved

Post the details of your quiz on local notice boards.

Sourcing Prizes

Page 18: Question Sheet - Small Charity Weeksmallcharityweek.com/.../03/The-Great-Big-Small-Chari… · Web viewWhich continent is the world’s second smallest by size, but also has the second

Ask around your supporters, trustees, local independent shops, restaurants etc for free prizes/ gift vouchers

You could offer a cash prize taken from a portion of the entrance fees

If you are holding your quiz in a pub, you could ask for a free round of drinks and vouchers for their restaurant as a prize (if appropriate)

A bottle of wine and a box of chocolates is always a good and cost effective prize.

On the Quiz Night Handout the picture round in advance of the start

Announce that the quiz will be beginning shortly and ensure that all teams have pens, answer sheets and have paid

Briefly outline the format of the quiz – e.g. will repeat the questions twice and then again at the end of the round on request, number of rounds, and that the Quizmaster’s word is final!

Make a note of all the team names.

After the Quiz Quizmaster will announce the results

If there is a tie – use answers to the tie breaker question/s, closest to the number wins

IMPORTANT! – Please don’t forget to let the Small Charity Week team know how your quiz went and how much money you raised through the Big Small Charity Quiz by emailing [email protected]. We provide these resources for free; please let us know if they were worthwhile and if you have any handy tips for the future.

Other Possible Rounds to maximise your Quiz!If you have the time and resources there are a number of ways you can customise your quiz.

You could, for instance, add:

A Cocktail Quiz get the barman to mix cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and get your teams to guess the ingredients

A Specialist Round – if you are running a tailored quiz for a specific group you can add a specialist round – e.g. if it’s a school quiz, pictures of past headmasters and teachers.

A Fancy Dress element – you can award prizes for the best costumes

A Creative Quiz –give teams a selection of materials and get them to make something during a quiz break. Only attempt this if you have the time and the space for the chaos that can result from the activity!

The possibilities for your quiz are endless– just remember the main focus is to have FUN whilst raising funds for your small charity!
