Question 5/ How did you attract/ address

your audience?

Pre-Production Audience Research:

FOCUS GROUPQUESTIONNAIRE

When attracting my audience I had to focus on the information that I received from my pre-production audience research to see what they were looking for. This research meant that I could include all of the things that my audience want out of a music magazine and so potentially attracting a large audience towards my magazine. In my research I discovered that my audience like dark colours or more specifically red, purple and black, this meant that I used these when considering my house style for my magazine.

I used a deep red as the main theme throughout my magazine by using it as the colour of ‘IND’ on my front cover and using it as the colour of my titles on the other pages throughout.

In my focus group I discovered that my audience are attracted to a magazine if the main picture is of an attractive person/ people and so I have used three attractive young girls, this suggests that my audience are looking for a role model or someone that is eye

pleasing when they are buying a magazine.

Also when taking the pictures for my magazine I looked at different environments in which I should take them in,

from research I discovered that ‘indie’ youths are usually associated with being out of the social norm and in

unusual environments and so I decided to take pictures in an alley way.

I positioned the girls up against brick walls and vandalised garages; this

would attempt to attract my target audience to my

magazine as it is incorporating their lifestyle and familiar environments

into the magazine.

In my focus group research I asked my audience to talk about the layout of various

magazines, I discovered that they like to look at a well

organised magazine that have a clear layout and so when

creating my magazine I tried to keep it simple and not

fussy.

Additionally I asked my audience what types of things that they look for to read inside magazines, I discovered that they enjoy reading interviews and articles about artists/ bands and so I wrote an interview on the new upcoming

band ‘Ivy’.

I kept this in a conversational tone as during research I discovered that similar music magazines kept their

interviews relaxed and conversational. This means that my audience feel that they can relate to the artist themselves

and lets them have better insight of what they are like as a person, this also reflects in the way that my audience are

young and in a low class.

Similarly in my editor’s note I kept it short and friendly to try and bring a relaxed tone to my

magazine.

Additionally to try to fit in with the lifestyle of my audience I have kept the magazine seasonal and at a reasonable

price.
