Question 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Thriller is a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as its main elements. Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods, giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and terror. Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced.

In our opening:- Titles are all the same throughout which are showing

conventions, due to all the titles being the same size, font and glow color. We have made it like this because it gives a sense of suspense and curiosity

- There are a variety of shots taken in small and dark locations, which is another convention, to again create mystery

- Large sense of mystery that is created, as well as suspense and threat

We have made film opening to a thriller: In a thriller opening you would normally find:

- Blood- Fast pace scenes- Music creating suspense- Dark scenes- Low music - Creepy atmosphere - Suspicious character- Silhouettes- Conventions and symbolisms

Another analysis of a film opening we did as a group was the movie Skyfall that is a bond movie:

- It is a thriller movie and has given us many ideas for our movie - The music fits very well and goes with the film- It is easy to follow and doesn’t give anything away to soon- It is a popular film so we could see the different audiences’

reviews to help us focus on points they may not have included.

Page 2: Question 1

We used the film Skyfall to compare as it looks very much the same to our target audience, of the similar age. Genre and is generally popular so a good contrast. We picked out points we liked about it and used these in our opening and found the bits we weren’t so keen on to then adapt on and create into our own image of what we would want ours to be like.

In my opening, the friends are all together and then they suddenly split off into being just a girl alone and then the other girl and boy together, this can be seen as confusing but later in the film it gets explained in more detail. The way they split is that the girl has gone missing in the busy London City and that she goes to the park where they played together earlier that evening. There is no crime committed or victim but it is a mystery created as to whether someone took her or if she just got lost.

We meet the main character and her two friends (boy and girl). We learn they are very close but then one gets lost and the others try finding her but not seen whether she gets found or not as it is just the opening. There is no good or bad character as they are all friends and no one is in the wrong. In the opening we do not find out whether they had an argument which caused one to run away then get lost or if it being just so busy, the crowds manage to split them up and then not find each other again.

They start with the director and continue on from importance. The font stays the same throughout as well as the sizing and the colour of it as this way it looks a lot smarter and neater as well as making it more readable for the audience. The colour is a dark grey which then fits in really well to the opening scene and the background colour being dark which creates the deep atmosphere.

The Location is London (City) and we see all the biggest landmarks such as Big Ben, Parliament, London Eye etc which makes it easy for the audience to relate to as it is such a popular tourist attraction that gets so busy during the day making it understandable for a teenage girl to get lost in.

A variety of shots are used including pan up, pan down, tilt up and down, eye level, worm view etc. These all made the shots fit together nicely adding more effect when all together. The music we have used creates a tense mysterious atmosphere and makes it creepy to listen

to which makes the audience wonders what will happen next. The music is not copyright and was found on the internet. We used slow motion for a few of the shots and used cross-cutting to have 2 shots over the top of each other which worked really well. We used this to show the rush and the pavement and where the pavement was leading to. We used double time as well to make the scene seem more rushed to create a different atmosphere. As well as this, some of the shots were quite dark so we used the saturation to make it seem brighter which made it more clear what was happening.
