Looking for a “coordi-nated approach” for a com-munity in transition, Mayor Bob Simpson and council are making their pitch to minis-ters at the annual Union of British Columbia Municipal-ities this week.

“Quesnel City Council has demonstrated that we will lead our community through this transition period; that we will take the necessary steps, as difficult as they may be, to ensure we are fiscally sustain-able and that our community will remain resilient and vi-brant,” the request to Premier Clark and cabinet reads.

“We need the same focused and timely leadership from the provincial government.

“To that end, Quesnel City Council respectfully requests a special cabinet committee in the mountain pine beetle impact zone to enable us to proactively manage through this transition period, ensure our traditional sectors are able to maximize their investment and employ-ment opportunities and to work with communities to implement community stabil-ity initiatives in an expedi-tious manner.”

The two main areas coun-cil is seeking provincial as-

sistance on include industrial sector strategies and commu-nity stability initiatives.

Simpson pointed to a long-unanswered request from Quesnel River Pulp to the province seeking PST relief on their energy purchase and for changes to a BC Hydro energy efficient program that could potentially attract in-vestment to the mill.

Simpson also highlighted a request from C&C Wood Products that is also unan-swered and seeks fibre secu-rity so they can pursue alter-native products and markets that would assist in mitigat-ing midterm timber supply crisis and forest rehabilita-tion.

On the community stabil-ity front, council pointed to the long-waited request for a new junior school, “imme-diate” needed upgrades to GR Baker, help with physi-cian recruitment programs and year-to-year funding from both provincial and federal government to address infrastructure needs.

“These are examples of industry not getting the at-tention it needs to change,” Simpson said, noting a good working relationships with ministers.

“We’re in a time crunch, we need focus and coordina-tion.”

NEWS

September is more than halfway through and while re season may not be completely over, it certainly has died down.

Recent cool temperatures and scattered showers have lowered the re danger ratings to “low” and “moderate” throughout most of the Cariboo Fire Centre.

Since the beginning of September, the Cariboo Fire Centre has responded to four new wild res.

All of these were small, around 0.01 hectares in size; three are out and one is in mop-up.

The only active re in

the Cariboo Fire Centre is a wild re burning south of Chilko Lake.

This wild re is estimated at 220 hectares in size and is a modi ed response re.

A modi ed response re is one that is allowedto burn within set guidelines which are developed based on a discussion with the land managers.

The area has received a lot of precipitation, including some snow and the re is smoldering in a remote, high-altitude location.

To recap the re season to date, the Cariboo Fire

Centre has responded to 180 res which have burned a total of 9,772 hectares. 8,089 of those hectares burned was the result of one wild re – the Puntzi Lake re.

These numbers are slightly higher than last year with 134 res burning 2,061 hectares by this time in 2014.

However, this season was signi cantly quieter than average with only about three-quarters of the number of res we typically respond to.

Over the past 10 years, the Cariboo Fire Centre has had an average

of 240 res burning 31,554 hectares by this time of year.

There were three main res of note this season: the Pelican Lake re (164 hectares); the Bald Mountain re (655 hectares); and the Puntzi Lake re (8,089 hectares).

Thirty-seven percent of wild res in the Cariboo this year have been human-caused.

Despite having a below-average re season in the Cariboo, the overall provincial picture however, was above average.

As of September,

17, 2015, there have been 1,810 wild res throughout British Columbia with 298,429 hectares burned.

So far, this year’s re numbers are about 20 percent higher than the 10-year average and over two times more hectares have burned compared to the 10-year average.

Of the total res provincially, about 70 per cent have been lightning-caused and 30 per cent person-caused. The normal ratio is closer to a 60 – 40 split.

The total amount of lightning strikes for the season to date sets 2015

as the fourth highest year for number of strikes since 2002.

This fact along with the very dry conditions experienced this season helps explain the high percentage of lightning-caused res.

Fires in the Cariboo Fire Centre since April 1:

Gold Pan City with 21 res, totalling 172 hectares.

The Cariboo Chilcotin East with 56 res, at 1,128 hectares.

100 Mile House with 58 res, totalling 28 hectares, and Cariboo Chilcotin West with 45 res, totalling 8,444 hectares.

Fire Centre reports 21 Gold Pan res

CITY COUNCIL NEWS

We Need Focused Assistance from the Province

Mayor Bob [email protected]

Bob Simpson, Mayor

This column is paid for by the City of Quesnel.410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC V2J 7J5

www.quesnel.ca

This week I will be attending the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Vancouver along with members of Council. During the week we will have opportunities to formally and informally meet with provincial Cabinet Ministers and government decision-makers, and Council will be presenting one key mes-sage: we need more timely, coordinated and focused assistance from the province to help us manage through this transition period.

The recent operational curtailments at Tolko and C&C Wood Products have simply reinforced that Council must continue to prepare our community for more rational-ization in our forest sector as a result of both reductions in available commercial timber and changes in the marketplace. Council will continue to reduce the City’s operating costs and ensure we can protect our basic infra-structure, services and programs. However, we can only do so much, we need help from the province and the federal government.

While we have very productive relation-ships with MLA Oakes and individual Cabi-net Ministers (Ministers Bond and Thomson have been particularly helpful), we need more coordinated and deliberate transition assistance from Cabinet as a whole. We need to develop a real plan in cooperation with the province, have a “one-window” approach to government decision-makers (rather than waste so much time trying to get to them), and quickly obtain the decisions and re-sources we need to implement our strategy.

Of critical importance is the need for timeli-er decision-making from the province. There are outstanding requests from our major employers that have gone unanswered or unaddressed for too long; requests for policy changes and assistance that, if approved by the province, would enable these companies to invest in our community and stabilize our workforce despite a shrinking timber resource.

The provincial government called a special summer session of the legislature and passed far-reaching legislation for the LNG industry. This legislation committed the cur-rent and future governments to providing a competitive tax and regulatory environment for a phantom industry that may not be realized. But, we have real industries that employ real people and pay real taxes that are not getting the same level of concentrat-ed attention from the Province.

In a letter I sent to the Premier on behalf of Quesnel City Council we have asked that a Special Cabinet Committee be struck to work with local governments to immediately develop and implement a transition strategy for Pine Beetle impacted communities. We hope the Premier will act quickly to work with us in a coordinated manner so we can keep our communities vibrant and resilient through this challenging time.

BILL PHILLIPSSpecial to the Observer

Groans emanated throughout the packed house Wednesday when it was announced Conservative candidate Todd Doherty would not be attending the rst Prince George-area all candidates forum.

More than 100 people jammed a College of New Caledonia lecture hall for the forum, which was focused on economic issues.

It was so packed that extra chairs were brought in and attendees were actually sitting behind the candidates on the stage.

It was announced at the meeting the Doherty had a meeting con ict and could not attend.

According to his Facebook page, he was xing campaign signs in the Cariboo and attending a meeting in Likely.

“We are being ignored,” said Liberal candidate Tracy Calogheros.

“There have been policies and decisions being made in Ottawa that aren’t serving our region.”

She pointed to the seven per cent unemployment rate in the Cariboo region, higher than the national average, as an indicator the

area is not being well represented.

She said the solution is to put people to work adding the Liberals’ “historic” infrastructure program will help in the immediate short term.

“That money is being targeted to be spent by communities in the manner they wish to use it,” she said.

NDP candidate Trent Derrick said Canada has become too dependent on oil and gas, calling the national economy a “one trick pony.”

“It becomes boom or bust,” he said.

He said the NDP plan is based on supporting small businesses, the middle class and a strong manufacturing sector,

which includes value-added initiatives in the forest industry.

Derrick also said the NDP have announced they would increase the corporate tax rate from the current 15 per cent to 17 per cent.

Independent Sheldon Clare said diversifying the economy is a “critical element” of what has to transpire.

“In terms of the economy, we’re feeling it in Cariboo-Prince George,” he said.

“We are feeling it in British Columbia. Governments have traditionally put a lot of their eggs in one economic basket and we cannot continue to do that.

“What we need to do in this country

is get away from supporting one sector heavily without other sectors being able to develop as well.”

Clare also took a jab at the other candidates saying he, as an independent, is the only one “not in a box,” and not having to respond to a party whip.

Green Party candidate Richard Jaques said that with six children, he understands “family economics,” pretty well.

“Things are pretty tight,” he said.

“The $160 that Mr. Harper is throwing our way (referring to changes in the child tax credit) is not really helping.”

He said the No. 1 reason he is running is to get rid of Prime

Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives.

Christian Heritage Party candidate Adam de Kroon stated that increasing value-added opportunities in Canada is a must, and pointed to raw log exports as an example.

“By us re ning resources, here in Canada, we can create jobs here rather than out-sourcing our jobs to places like China,” he said.

de Kroon said between 2009 and 2013 B.C. went from exporting 2.5 million cubic metres of raw logs to 6.5 million cubic metres.

That, he said, costs Canadians jobs.

Canadians go to the polls October 19.

The three contenders for the prime minister’s of ce clashed in their second debate Thurs-day evening in Calgary, where slumping oil prices and indus-try layoffs framed a discussion on the economy.

NDP leader Tom Mulcair ac-cused Conservative Stephen Harper of having a “rip and ship approach” to natural re-source development, adding that Harper “put all of his eggs in one basket, and then dropped the basket.”

Harper said it is “simply false” that the oil industry’s woes represent the entire econ-omy, and overall it continues to perform well and produce more tax revenue despite a

40 per cent reduction in small business taxes and other tax cuts.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau said his plan also includes re-duction in small business taxes and he emphasized he is the only leader willing to raise personal income taxes on the wealthiest one per cent of in-come earners, to nance a cut for the middle class.

Moderated by David Walms-ley, editor of The Globe and Mail, the debate drew out dif-ferences between the three es-tablished party leaders on sev-eral topics.

Greenhouse gases:• Mulcair favours a cap-and-

trade system, but he avoided questions about what his sys-tem would cost the economy or consumers. The NDP will

“enforce overarching sustain-able development legislation,” he said.

• Trudeau defended his posi-tion that each province should address emissions in its own way. He said Mulcair wants to impose a national bureau-cracy, including on B.C., which Trudeau called a world leader in use of carbon tax.

• Harper said carbon taxes are about revenues to govern-ment, not the environment.

He said under his 10-year ad-ministration, Canada has seen a decline in emissions while the economy grew, adding that his government invests $1 billion a year in alternative energy.

• Trudeau defended his plan to run three deficits of up to $10 billion to finance roads and other infrastructure, with interest rates at a low ebb and Canada’s debt relative to the size of the economy declining.

• Mulcair called Trudeau’s plan “reck-less and uncosted,” while the NDP calls for steady investment over 20 years.

• Harper said over 10 years, his gov-ernment has spent 15 times what the previous Liberal government spent on infrastructure. That includes record defi-cits for public works projects in the wake of the 2009 economic crisis.

Taxation:• Harper said the

other parties promise tax relief for small businesses, but their

plans to increase Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance premiums amount to a payroll tax 10 times as big as their small business tax cuts.

• Mulcair said he will raise income tax from 15 to 17 per cent for large corporations, but he believes individuals are paying their fair share now. Mulcair

reminded viewers that Trudeau has support-ed Conservative bud-gets, and his first vote in Parliament was to support Harper’s tax “giveaway” to big business.

• Trudeau em-phasized that his is the only plan that increases taxes for bank executives and other wealthy indi-viduals as well as on banks, while reducing

income tax on the middle class.

Green Party MP Elizabeth May wasn’t invited to the Globe debate, but chipped in with videos on her Twitter account.

In one, May noted that there was no discussion of “in-vestor state agree-ments” such as one with China that have intruded on Canada’s sovereignty.

CompassionThe debate around how to

help Syrian refugees, flee-ing a vicious civil war and

expanding Islamic State terrorism, has become something of a political football in Canada. It’s to be expect-ed that various parties during the election would  make various claims on the best approach. But this is beyond politics. The

publication of the photo that went around the world – that of three-year-old Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi – is ample evidence of that.Canadians are compassionate

people and there is ample precedent for helping those in need.We need only recall when in the

1980s thousands of Vietnamese “boat people” were taken in by this country.Compassion has to supersede poli-

tics in this matter but other ques-tions arise of Canadians wanting to respond. While dramatic and serious events

like the Syrian crisis are few and far between, there is no lack of other events seeking our charitable re-sponse.It’s important to analyze how

useful and effective such charitable “trends” are, often spurred on by heart-wrenching photos, and where they go after the outrage dies down and the public moves on to the next hot issue. We can look beyond the migrant

crisis in Europe to any number of countries that would benefit from the aid and compassion of Canadi-ans. And it is right and good that we continue to do what we can.And for every trendy hashtag and

its accompanying global outrage, there are local issues which, perhaps at times lacking the same profile, still need our attention. The status of refugees, and Cana-

da’s responsibility in assisting them, is deservedly in the spotlight. And local organizations that are doing their part deserve our accolades, es-pecially as most of them were doing the hard work to support refugees for years before it became a trendy issue.

The federal election campaign has produced a jumble

of conflicting claims about whether or not Canada has a balanced budget or a deficit, how it was determined, and whether it even matters.

The definitive word on this came out last week, with the release of the Government of Canada Annual Financial Report, signed off by Auditor General Michael Ferguson.

“The government posted a budgetary surplus of $1.9 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, compared to a budgetary deficit of $5.2 billion in 2013-14,” the report says.

“Revenues increased by $10.7 billion, or 3.9 per cent, from 2013-14, reflecting increases across all major revenue streams. Program expenses increased by $5.2 billion, reflecting increases in major transfers to persons and other levels of government, offset in part by a decrease in direct program expenses.”

The Conservative government’s pre-election budget calculated that last year was in deficit, and this year would be the first in the black since 2008. Ottawa pundits say

this “surprise surplus” was engineered with intentionally pessimistic budget estimates, so Prime Minister Stephen Harper would get a boost right about now.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau claimed last year’s surplus was partly generated by cuts to Veterans’ Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs. Wrong and wrong. Veterans’ Affairs spending was up 13 per cent, and Aboriginal Affairs spending rose nearly 30 per cent.

Trudeau has also insisted Canada is in recession now, which helps his suddenly adopted position that a Liberal government would run deficits for the next three years to build infrastructure.

Harper ran the biggest deficits in Canadian history after the 2009 crash, bailing out auto makers and building lots of “shovel

ready” infrastructure, as did the U.S. and other countries. The question raised by Trudeau’s plan is whether it’s a good idea to keep doing that without a financial crisis.

France, for example, has run operating deficits every year since the early 1970s, although the current Socialist government vows to balance the books by 2017. France’s operating debt is now equal to 91 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product.

Canada’s net debt-to-GDP ratio is currently around 30 per cent, down from frightening levels in the 1990s before the Chrétien government finally balanced the budget.

(Fun fact: then-finance minister Paul Martin not only cut transfers to provinces, unlike the current government, he inflicted the largest-ever cuts to the CBC. Harper’s CBC cuts were part of government-wide reductions, again due to that 2009 crisis.)

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has promised to balance the budget every year of his mandate, should he form Canada’s first-ever socialist government. He will spend the rest of the campaign trying to reconcile

this promise with the grandiose spending plans he has piled up.

Meanwhile in B.C., Finance Minister Mike de Jong may have benefited from Harper’s lowball budget. In his first quarter update last week, de Jong reported that his February budget forecast is on track, with a $277 million surplus.

This is despite a $300 million bill for forest firefighting, thanks to personal and corporate income tax revenue expected to be $374 million higher than budgeted. B.C. bases its tax revenue figures on federal estimates, and the ones they got early this year were clearly low.

Understated or not, this is a nice problem to have. De Jong says that at the current pace, B.C. will pay off its accumulated operating debt by 2020.

The last time the province was free of operating debt was 1982. The big debt peak came during the NDP 1990s, with another spike from 2009 to 2013 under the B.C. Liberals.

In their ongoing efforts to provide food for the hungry and groceries for those in need, the Salvation Army is putting out a call to farmers, hunters and the public for donations of meat for the soup kitchen.

“We can accept any meat, beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, wild game and can arrange for the processing if necessary,” Salva-tion Army Lieutenant Stefan Van Schaick said.

“We also appreciate fresh garden and tree fruit produce at this time of year for the soup kitchen. Any-thing surplus to the soup kitchen, such as apples, goes on our free table and those passing through the Warrior Song Cafe are wel-come to help themselves.”

He added the only thing they can’t accept is anything canned at home (unless in a Northern Health approved kitchen.)

The Food Bank has seen steady numbers over the summer months. For the rst two weeks of Septem-ber, 81 households accessed the service and Stefan expects another

50 households will do so before the end of the month.

“That’s about 130 households and that’s pretty average,” he said.

“However, donations are always slower at this time of year. Our shelves are somewhat bare.”

The rst step, before you donate, is to check the best-before-date on any non-perishable items, Stefan said.

The food bank can’t accept any item past that date.

As for what is most needed at the food bank, Stefan provided a top six items list.

• tuna• canned veggies• soups• canned fruit• mac and cheese• pork and beans“If I have to shop for items dur-

ing the month, it’s for these top six items,” he said.

“They’re staples for the food bank.”

Now that people are back from holidays and school is once again in session, the Salvation Army would like to remind everyone that poverty doesn’t take a holiday and the need is always great.

Sunday, Sept. 27 is World Rivers Day as well as the last day of Quesnel’s

three-day Culture Days celebrations.

To honour both culture and rivers, Danielea Castell, eco-artist and sound healer and creator of the Bank of Gratitude Project has organized the second annual event in Ceal Tingley Park at the con uence of two mighty rivers, the Fraser and the Quesnel Rivers, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for adults and 12 – 2 p.m. for family celebrations including children’s activities and bannock.

Quesnel’s event is hosted by Holli Garvin, Aboriginal Resource Teacher with School District 28 and Lita Conlin, mother, compost connoisseur and WildSafe BC coordinator. Castell has also organized events in Likely and Tete Jaune and the biggest event in Prince George where she will be hosting.

“The Bank of Gratitude has a simple premise – sit with your local river, give thanks and then make any form of

art to commemorate your experience,” Castell said.

This summer, Castell pursued her own water pilgrimage to the Peace River.

“I had the privilege of paddling a kayak on the Peace River as part of the 10th anniversary of Paddle for the Peace in July and felt a strong connection with that mighty river so I decided to spend a week camping beside the Peace River to get to know it, get to know the spirit and character,” she said.

“I went on that journey with my water gratitude project colleague Helen Styles. We collaborated with two other artists Garry Oker, former chief of Doig First Nations and Shelley Mowat to offer improvised gratitude songs to the Peace River. A group painting was created immediately following the event which captures the strength, beauty and spirit of the sound-weaving ceremony.”

The Quesnel event invites adults to the morning session where opening ceremonies with songs and prayers will be led by Holli Garvin followed by personal time on the riverbank for gratitude and art making. You are asked to bring

your own art supplies and something to sit on.

At noon family time begins where children’s gratitude crafts including rock painting and beading of a tap bracelet to take home and honour your home water. Materials are supplied for these free craft activities. There will also be cinnamon/sugar bannock bites.

Danielea Castell, Lita Conlin and Holli Garvin gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship of the Baker Creek Enhancement Society and the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans for this event.

“Every river and every time you spend time heart to heart with a river is time well spent and an excellent form of river stewardship,” Castell said.

“Get to know your river, spiritually and emotionally.

“Focusing on my love and gratitude for water sustains me in my water work.”

She added a version of Bank of Gratitude can be done anywhere, anytime with any water and she encourages people to express their gratitude to water whenever the opportunity presents itself.

It has almost been two years since I lost my aunt to cancer. It doesn’t

feel that long ago. In fact, sometimes it doesn’t even feel real. If there is one thing I hope to do for my aunt, it’s to use the experience to help others.

We look at individuals who suffer and think, “Why would this happen?” “Why can’t someone help them?” Well let me ask you something – Why can’t you? We were all created on this earth to help one another.

You can use your time and knowledge to help fight cancer by volunteering for activities that will help fund research on all types of cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. If you’re looking for an opportunity to provide comfort and support to people with cancer and their families while they receive treatment, consider volunteering in a regional centre, lodge or local hospital.

Your role may include

helping people receiving cancer treatment find their way around, helping them prepare for appointments and providing comfort while they’re waiting for or receiving treatment. You may also share information about the Canadian Cancer Society and other support services they may want to connect with in their community. Together, we create a unique environment that focuses on the needs of people living with cancer. Together we can make Canada a healthy place to live. By sharing life-saving prevention messages with our local communities. By telling

lawmakers why increased cancer research funding is important to us. Working together, we can create social and political change that will help control cancer in Canada.

Create a memorial page on The Canadian Cancer Society’s website. With a few simple steps you can create a lasting tribute to a loved one — a tribute that will not only celebrate your loved one’s unique story but also provide friends and family with a powerful way to make their own impact in the fight against cancer. With a memorial page, you’ll be able to share stories and pictures, and inspire others to keep fighting for an end to cancer. Every donation to your page brings us one step closer to preventing cancer, detecting it earlier, improving treatments and helping Canadians live longer, healthier lives.

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm)People with tinnitus hear sounds from within their ear. Sounds like ringing, buzzing, whistling, roaring or hissing can be very draining and stressful. There is hope on the horizon. A new drug, AM-101 is being tested and looks promising to treat tinnitus. It is administered as an injection into the ear past the ear drum. Clinical trials so far have shown significant reduction in the sounds with minimal side effects. We’ll keep you posted on this one.Another good reason to exercise regularly: It helps reduce the loss of height that often comes with aging. Those little discs between our vertebrae often dry out and get smaller with age. This results in our becoming shorter. But regular exercise will compress and relax these discs and help keep them from shrinking.During pregnancy, when you or the people around you smoke, your baby smokes too. Smoking interferes with the efficient transport of oxygen in the blood so your baby gets less oxygen and that can cause the baby to grow more slowly, gain less weight and could be born prematurely. No alcohol during pregnancy is a good rule to follow. Add no smoking to the list as well.People who have had one kidney stone will probably have another within 5 years. Most kidney stones contain calcium oxalate. Eating foods high in calcium (or supplements) can help bind the oxalate in the gut reducing the amount reaching the urine. For help in choosing the right calcium product for you, talk to our pharmacists.

Last Novem-ber, they were diagnosed

within a week of each other! And those diagnoses sparked a painful, often fright-ening, lifetime jour-ney that has created an amazing bond and incredible resolve.

Tara Fookes was told she had lobular cancer; which meant the slow growing mass was spread through the lymph system, making it less obvious to detection. Gayle MacDonald had ductal cancer, a much more aggres-sive lump form that rapidly increased in size.

One was told that the hardening was a symptom of meno-pause. The other felt a small difference but dismissed it. Both were absorbed into the system rapidly and told that they would have to give up the next year of their life to fight the disease. They both went into a protective shell during which the sense of shame caused them to wonder what they had done wrong. The shock led them to research, learn and question. Just acquaintances before, this common experi-ence has galvanized them into a bonded pair that share history and purpose.

They learned about the factors that encourage the cancer to flourish. Gayle explains that a ‘triple negative’ diagnosis is when the body chemicals, estrogen, progesterone and hu-man epidural growth factor are not respon-sible for the growth. This occurs in about 10 to 20 per cent of breast cancers. Tara’s mass was estrogen fueled so the protocol worked to reduce estrogen levels signifi-cantly.

One had chemother-apy then surgery then radiation. The other had hormone therapy then surgery, chemo and radiation. One had the lump and two lymph nodes removed while the other had

10 cancerous nodes identified leading to a mastectomy.

They supported each other mentally, physi-cally and emotionally. They went to treat-ment sessions to-gether and discussed doctors – having ex-perienced both comfy and prickly ones. While bald, their glowing faces showed no shame. Now, their hair is growing back and they are ready to forge ahead.

Mammograms did not assist with early detection for either woman but a digital machine could have! Tara learned that we all need to be hyper aware of any changes and if concerned, keep pursuing a clear diagnosis. She also counsels people to not rely on informa-tion from the Internet because it can be mis-leading. Everyone’s situation is unique! Gayle learned that carrying a cell phone in her bra might have been the cause of her lump. Since her cancer was not chemi-cally driven, there had to be another trigger. Studies have shown that more women in their 20’s are now dealing with breast lumps and that all of them carried their cell phone in the area where the lump emerged.

A digital machine has a 30 per cent in-crease in likelihood of detection and though that number sounds small, it is huge when it means detection can come earlier and more definitively. The acquisition of this machine has long been the focus of the Quesnel Women’s Fall Challenge (QWFC) and we now know that it will happen within two years.

So, what is next for this bonded, force-ful team? They may never know why they contracted the disease but they are firm in their knowledge that they were strong, fit, healthy and ready to fight. They credit their fitness when talking about rapid recovery

time and less need for anti-nausea drugs. Being natural moti-vators, they now see opportunity arising from adversity. They have taken cancer specific exercise courses, they have their own personal stories and they have their love of helping others to become the best possible to spur them to reach out. Starting on Tuesday, Sept 15, their new program called Living with Cancer, wel-comes anyone, with any kind of cancer, to their twice weekly sessions. Costing just the Recreation Centre user fee, participants will be encouraged to discuss, share, plan and start being more active,

The tone of any session will be driven by the participant as the ladies provide opportunities and encouragement. When feeling able to be more active, there will be a series of sta-tions available. If just needing to feel part of an accepting group, participants will find empathetic ears. Since all cancer journeys

are unique, the ladies acknowledge that there might be a need for the inclusion of participant support-ers.

This gathering is a work in progress, a new entity on the fitness continuum. Without even hav-ing their first session, Tara and Gayle have been asked to create a similar class in both Prince George and Williams Lake.

And this is not their limit! Tara believes that some things are meant to happen and that perhaps these ladies were meant to experience disaster first hand in order to better provide fitness motivation! Stay tuned.

This energetic pair will explore future prospects for making living with cancer less daunting. And, to support the acqui-sition of a digital machine, please join the QWFC on Oct. 4 for a morning jaunt/run/walk/wheel along Dragon Lake.

FORESTRY WEEK 2015 Sept. 20th - 26th

In recognition of this year’s theme for Sept. 20-26 National Forest Week, Wildland Fire – You can make a difference, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson has released the following statement:

“As Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, I always look forward to celebrating National Forest Week.

“Forestry is a key economic driver supporting families throughout British Columbia. In 2014, forestry provided 60,700 direct jobs and generated $12.4 billion in exports – accounting for 35 per cent of all B.C. goods exported.

“One of the risks to our forests and its economic benefits is wildfire. Fire is a normal, natural process in many of British Columbia’s ecosystems. Many species of plants,

birds, insects and other animals depend on fire for its regenerative properties. Fire also helps control insects and spread of disease in forests.

“It also creates forest regeneration, as younger trees replace older trees. Land managers also use prescribed or control burns to restore ecosystems, to enhance habitat and improve forage, or to reduce the wildfire risk around communities.

“In 2004, we introduced the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative to help local governments and First Nations reduce wildfire risks around their communities. We’ve provided over $67 million.

To date, 286 communities have completed community wildfire protection plans and the fuel build-up on more than 78,000 hectares of land has been

reduced.“To complement

those efforts, working with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities we have introduced the 2016 FireSmart Grant Program. Fifty grants of up to $10,000 each will be made available to local governments and First Nations to help communities identify and reduce wildfire risks on private land.

“And in keeping with this year’s theme for National Forest Week, Wildland Fire – You can make a difference – I’d like to remind property owners that they can reduce the wildfire risk on their properties through landscaping and following the tips in the FireSmart Homeowner’s Manual.

“I’d also like to remind British Columbians that the number of human-caused fires remains too high. Of the 1,805 wildfires this

summer, 545 were caused by humans. Because of the high percentage of human-caused fires that persists year after year, I asked Parliamentary Secretary Mike Morris to review the fines and penalties in place under the Wildfire Act for human-caused fires - and human interference in firefighting.

“Twice in August, firefighting operations were shutdown because of drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, flying in restricted airspace.

Drones put lives and public safety at risk. In addition to asking Transport Canada to strengthen its regulations, we’re looking to see how we can strengthen the Wildfire Act.

“I hope during National Forest Week you take the time to enjoy the great outdoors and appreciate the beauty of our forests.”

History of National Forest WeekEstablished in the

1920’s as Forest Fire Prevention Week, the intention was to encourage greater public awareness of Canada’s forests. Since then, National Forest Week (NFW), as it was renamed in 1967, has evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental aspects of Canada’s forest resources –

past, present and future.

Although special activities are

promoted across Canada, National Forest Week remains first and foremost

a challenge to individual Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource. National Forest Week is observed annually during the last full week of September. National Tree Day is observed on the Wednesday of National Forest Week.

“Although special activities are promoted across Canada, National

Forest Week remains first and foremost a challenge to individual

Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage...”

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

Although, the weather was bad it didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners, in the Terry Fox Run on Sunday at Leb-ourdais Park. There was great support as the community came together for a great cause. The run started at 10 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m. It was a 5-km route where participants could walk or run, which went around the River Front Trail. Chairman Janice Rivers of the Rotary Club believes the run is a great

reminder of what Fox did. “I think what Terry Fox did and the

legacy that he left was so amazing, that you can never let it die,” Rivers said.

Although, they didn’t have a specific goal this year, they want to improve from year to year.

“We would always like to surpass what we did in the previous year to try and grow the participation,” Rivers said.

This year’s run raised $7,573. Fox began his Marathon of Hope April 12, 1980, dipping his artificial foot in the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland.

His effort was to raise $1 for every Canadian to find a cure for cancer.

He was forced to stop running in Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer appeared in his lungs. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised close to $700 million for cancer research. Fox is the youngest person to be made a recipient of the Order of Canada, named as a per-son of national historic significance by the government of Canada and a mem-ber of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The Royal Bank staff also did a walk in May for Terry Fox and raised $1,000,

which was not included in the total, but was sent to the Terry Fox Foundation allocated to be included with Quesnel’s Terry Fox Run. The Rotary Club would like to thank Family Fun, Safe-Way, Save on Foods, Sign Stop, Aroma Foods and PFT Accounting for all the support they gave. Rivers says people who couldn’t participate can always support the cause.

“People can donate to Terry Fox all year round, it doesn’t have to just be on the day,” Rivers said.

Donations can be made at http://www.terryfox.org

September 6 - 12, 2015ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Hasty reactions can lead to unnecessary problems, Aries. Instead of making assumptions, wait until you get a clear picture before you come to any conclusions this week.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21Taurus, others are impressed with your analysis and ability to get the job done at work. Don’t be surprised if you soon find yourself in line for a promotion.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21There is nothing wrong with trying to make special moments last as long as they can, Gemini. If you want to linger over a romantic dinner or keep the party going, do so.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22Try to find a balance between your need for con-nection and a desire to be alone, Cancer. This week you may have to do some juggling, but it is nothing you can’t handle.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, you may feel free and adaptable right now, but in reality your plans are much more fixed. You may not want to stray too far from what’s expected.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, the depth of your feelings this week may come as a surprise to you. Everything makes you feel a bit more emotional than usual. It is okay to spend some time in thought.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, your mood begins to lift as you find many reasons to celebrate this week. The simplest things can bring you happiness. Don’t forget to share joy with others.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, you can’t quite figure out if you are happy or sad, because each new opportunity seems like an emotional roller coaster. Enjoy the ride and ap-preciate the good times.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you can appreciate all the little details that come with tasks this week. You may see things that others don’t because you are paying extra attention to your surroundings.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20Right now you aren’t very happy about having to deal with someone who isn’t always honest with you, Capricorn. Just maintain a neutral attitude and you will find happiness.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, you appreciate all the positive feelings coming your way, especially in a week as challeng-ing as this one. Make the most of all of the positive vibes.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, you may have a hard time distinguishing between fantasy and reality the next few days. But enjoy the extra time to daydream.

The revamped Blue Col-lar squad

definitely got bigger in the off-season but that didn’t slow them down as they cruised to a 6-4 victory over Bear. The newly minted twin tower combo of Wade ¨The Blade¨ Fenton and Justin ¨Time¨ Ras-mussen combined for four goals and three assists thanks to their superior skill and wingspans. Mak-ing up with speed for what he lacks in stature was Darcy ¨Dr.¨ McGillivray who lickety split the Bear Defence to earn three assists. Two former Red Bears got into the act for their new team as Kieron ¨Kami-kaze¨ Langen and Lee ¨Nitro¨ Naeth both scored for the defend-ing champs. Ironically leading the Bear boys pushback were two integral cogs in lasts years BCS juggernaut as

Scott ¨Little Softy¨ Fairless and Colin ¨Clutch¨ Keis had a goal and an assist apiece. Brody ¨Good¨ Neighbour and Clint ¨Make my day¨ Win-chester also found the twine for Bear, who their Captain hopes can regain their elite status of a few years ago. The contest in the newly renovated ¨New¨ rink saw Seren-ity lose a two goal 2nd half lead before breaking Fraser Rivers hearts for a 4-3 win. The usual suspects accounted for the majority of the Builders points as Ian ¨Heartbreaker¨ Hannah and Kevin

¨Nightrider¨ Hessle-grave staked their team to an early lead. Cracking the goose egg for the Chevy crew on a screened bouncer from the point was Derek ¨Gonzales¨ Burdekin which made the score 3-1 at Zamboni time. After the flood the Fraser River muscle cars were unleashed with Jason ¨Junior¨ Johnson and then Waylon ¨and Willy¨ L`Heureux using their speed to leave the Builder D in the dust to draw the score even. Just when it looked like the game was heading to the shoot-out, Henry ¨Henrik¨ Boal fore-checked an unsuspect-ing Fraser River D man who coughed the puck up to ¨Night-rider¨ who scored his second unassisted beauty to make the final 4-3.

Prince George will host the 2017 Telus Cup, Cana-da’s 44 National Midget Cham-pionship. The tournament will run from April 16-22. The Cari-boo Cougars will be joined by the Pacific, West, On-tario, Quebec and Atlantic champi-ons to compete for gold. The Cougars get an automatic berth as the host. This is the sec-ond time Prince George will host, as they held the event in 2001, when it was called the Air Canada Cup. Games will be played at the CN Centre, but will be moved to the Coliseum if the Prince George Cougars are still in the playoffs.
