Local motorists and highway travellers will see better driving conditions on Highway 97 in the Quesnel area from a new paving project and an upcoming transportation study, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone announced Wednesday.

A $5.8-million paving project is soon to start, resurfacing approximately 35 kilometres of Highway 97 and over six kilometres of local side roads.

The ministry is also providing $300,000 over the next two years to do a Highway 97 corridor analysis to determine the traffic patterns and long-term transportation needs of Quesnel, and to assess the economic potential of an east-west connector.

“The highway and roads in Quesnel serve both the community and the local natural resource industries and it’s critical that this important link in the provincial road network be maintained to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods,” Stone said.

“In B.C. on the Move, our 10-year transportation plan, we committed to work with the City of Quesnel to establish future project priorities to improve traffic

flow through the downtown core. We’re looking forward to starting a much-needed study to address the area’s transportation needs.”

Resurfacing will start shortly in four main areas including:

• Highway 97 between Quartz Road and the junction with Highway 26.

• Highway 97 between Naver Road and Plett Road.

• The approach to the weigh scale located south of the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 26.

• 6.6 km of local side roads. The recycled asphalt product

generated from the milling of the pavement on Highway 97 will be re-used to resurface the local side roads.

Paving will provide a smoother, more comfortable ride while improving the safety and efficiency of this critical transportation hub.

“This region is experiencing continued growth as a result of economic activity,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said.

“The road work being done is essential to support the local and provincial traffic in the area. It’s also time to take a good hard look at the traffic movements of the area such that we can focus on improving the movement of goods and services for the long term.”

Vintage plans slated for Skyfest 2015ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

Spectators rolling their eyes skyward may think they’ve been transported back to the 1940s when Bud Granley takes to the air.

However, his T-6 Harvard single engine aircraft is all about what crowds want to see at a modern airshow like Skyfest 2015 – Quesnel’s International Airshow, July 31 - Aug. 2.

The vintage plane launches its performance with a snaproll on take off and continues to amaze through a 2,200-foot climb and many other outstanding moves.

Bud isn’t alone in his performance, bringing in his son Ross who is just one of several of Bud’s offspring who have careers in the sky. In fact his family history is littered with pilots.

The Granley team’s aircrafts includes a Fouga Jet, a two-seater jet-powered trainer aircraft which allows these skilled pilots to create stunning rolling performance.

But possibly the most visually arresting performance is the father and son in Yak-55s, which are single-seat, aerobatic Russian aircrafts.

Sychronization, take-off rolls, tumbles and turns, flips and loops wow spectators from takeoff to landing.

Bud admitted his love of flying began at the age of nine, after seeing his father land a Tiger Moth biplane in his uncle’s farm. Together with his two brothers, Bud joined his father in a flying career which included time in the Royal Canadian Air Force both as a pilot and instructor on his beloved T-6 Harvard. Using this aircraft, Bud began his career in air shows through demonstrations of the T-6 for the air force. He flew for United Airlines until retiring in 1997. Of his six children, three served

in the Canadian Armed Forces; two flew with the Snowbird aerobatic team and are now airline pilots.

His son and team partner Ross was a pilot with Canadian Armed Forces and also a Snowbird pilot, a fighter pilot as well as a flight instructor. Transitioning to civilian life, Ross and his family joined Bud in Washington state where he is also a United Airlines pilot.

One of his ongoing passions is performing with his father and entertaining flying enthusiasts. This is a milestone year for Bud Granley who turns 75 and is still going strong.

Beginning with the Twilight Show on Friday night, July 31 (tickets are limited, so don’t miss out) and moving into two days of sensational action with gates opening at 10 a.m. and show

start at noon watch for The Granleys and the other jaw-dropping, spectacular performances..

Tickets (adult, youth, family and weekend camping package) for Skyfest 2015 are available at Circle ‘S’ Western Wear, the Tourist Bureau or online at www.quesnelskyfest. ca/tickets. Mustang tickets can be

purchased at various venues including Integris Credit Union, Cariboo Ford, Circle ‘S’ Western Wear, Cap-it, Co-op, Quesnel Visitors Centre or contact any Skyfest director.

Parents watch for youth tickets included in year-end elementary report cards for students Grades 1 – 7 this week (children six

and under admission is free.)

Download the Quesnel Skyfest app to your smartphone and receive updates as they are posted or visit the Skyfest 2015 Facebook page.

The Victoria Composers Collective have embarked on a tour of the B.C. Interior including a concert at St. Andrews United Church, 7:30 p.m., July 3. Composers Dave Riedstra, Lynne Penhale, Maria Eduarda Mendes Martins, Nathan Friedman and Christopher Reiche have come together to present the Wanted Composers Tour.

Penhale is a former resident of Quesnel and many will remember her musical success in the community. Currently she is a composer, performer and music teacher with a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory from University of

Victoria. She sings, plays trombone in jazz and new music ensembles and enjoys swing dancing to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Penhale and her fellow composers present concerts of newly composed, unconventional works for electric bass, toy piano, trombone, clarinet, voice and piano as well as non-traditional musical instruments. The tour starts in Victoria on June 26 and ends in Kamloops on July 9.

These young composers have had tremendous success in their artistic careers. The ingenuity and charm of their work has won the favour of audiences in cities around the world including Brazil, Holland, Argentina,

the United States and Canada. In addition to being prolific composers, the group performs with a high degree of skill, often tackling difficult pieces that both mentally and physically challenge the performer.

“They disseminated a spirit of

appreciation and insight into every piece performed,” Benjamin Willems writes after witnessing their work in a recent composers festival.

The Wanted Composers Tour brings this music to audiences in communities across

B.C. for the first time in the form of performances, post-concert discussion periods, and improvised music workshops.

TRAVEL

I have the good fortune to know some Turks who love to travel and

share their culture. Each trip has afforded new

sights and delightful cultural differences. Snippets from Turkey are just a few of my observations from this amazing historical world that tries to blend modernity with tradition.

Turkey is famous for its carpets and if you have ever seen one, you might agree that the woven patterns can be very intricate. This love of patterns emerges in just about everything created.

Houses and apartments are built in clusters with repetitive elements. In Arabic areas, the buildings are covered with tile mosaics that would have taken many hours to place all the tiny tiles. And the stone walls in Kusadasi often incorporate arched highlights as tribute to Ottoman styles.

The Turks also do walkways very well. Each one seems to incorporate a pattern of some kind. Whether it is geometric

shapes done with red and grey bricks or a mixture of materials with marble blended with cement blocks, each path seems to have a unique character.

When very creative, the cement tiles are cut to shape to create artistic displays. In Polatli, the sidewalks are paved with bricks of varying shapes and colours. Depending on the shape of brick, the interlocking patterns might appear three-dimensional and my motion sickness was triggered while walking along one of these footways.

The municipality of Marmaris has a walkway that connects its marina area to the nearby town of Icmeller. A distance of 15 km is tiled and bricked with delightful designs and we walked it all.

With a good dose of water, trees and bushes grow everywhere. Even these are often cut into pattern or shapes. There are spiral and spherical sculptured trees and palm trees are planted by size. Bushes have been cut to represent fountains

and pansies crowd planters in blocks of colour. I’ve even seen cacti planted in patterns mixed with grasses and tiny palms.

There are patterns in the grill work that adorns and protects windows. There are spirals and shapes on the rails of metal fences. There are hedges cut as borders with scallops or spikes.

And I watched city workers painting curbs in

alternating colours. The colours vary by city. There are even patterns on the national park gates and on the lids of garbage bins.

The builders of new sky scrapers try to outdo each other with the uniqueness of shape and pattern. This artwork is everywhere! Our sidewalks look so plain compared to these.

The pain drivers feel at the pump from high gas prices may soon also come with a jolt of shame for helping destroy the planet.

A proposal gaining momentum with civic leaders in B.C. would see guilt-inducing climate change warning labels slapped on all gas pump handles.

The non-profit group Our Horizon has been advancing the concept on the basis that warnings that graphically show the damage from climate change could nudge motorists to cut their emissions.

It’s inspired by cigarette package warnings that are credited in the decline of smoking and the example warning labels circulated by the group are similar in design.

“Warning: Use of this fuel product contributes to ocean acidification which puts much marine life at risk of extinction,” states one label

that comes with images of thriving and dead coral.

West Vancouver council will bring a resolution before the Union of B.C. Municipalities in September asking the province to make the pump labels a requirement province-wide.

City of North Vancouver council voted to endorse the idea June 15 and it doesn’t want to wait for a provincial government decision.

“We’re going to try to go it alone,” Mayor Darrell Mussatto said, adding North Vancouver still must investigate the legalities. “We think it’s the right thing to

do.”Our Horizon B.C.

campaigner Matt Hulse said he believes any municipality could make gas pump labeling a condition for gas stations in its local business licence bylaw.

But West Vancouver Mayor Mike Smith, a longtime petroleum distributor in the region, said he doesn’t want to take the risk that a unilateral municipal requirement gets challenged in court.

“I personally hate spending public money on legal fees,” he said, adding his city will wait for provincial policy.

Smith said he will vote in favour of his council’s resolution at UBCM.

“It’s just a way of reminding the public that there’s a cost to be borne for using petroleum products,” Smith said.

“Nobody’s advocating banning them. But you should be aware when you fill your car up that there’s an effect on the climate and on the environment of doing that.”

Bold move

An email arrived in the Observer’s news inbox Tuesday morning from none other than

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. It read as follows: “hey. really quick... big announcement coming. on in 2 mins. it’s time for real change. gotta go. J.”The email, crafted to look like a

buddy’s drunk text on a Saturday night, was sent to thousands of people across the country to bolster some last-minute webcast viewing of Trudeau’s campaign-style speech in Ottawa. The highlight of that speech, other than watching 200 Liberal MP-hopefuls fatigue their smiling muscles behind Trudeau’s podium, included a promise to reform Canada’s electoral system within 18 months of taking power.A bold plan, indeed ... except for

the fact that the federal NDP have been advocating for proportional representation since 2004, and the Greens have had  it on their books since the mid-1990s.The latest polling numbers (still four

months out from the election) show that if the election was held today, the NDP could garner 29.1 per cent of the vote, while the Conservatives would hold onto a minority government with 30 per cent of the vote. The same poll suggests the Liberals

would again be in third place with 94 seats in the House of Commons.Trudeau has a long road to climb to

achieve Mulcair’s momentum, and the calculated release of the Liberals’ major announcements may yet be enough to turn the tide. But one mistake Trudeau needs to avoid is assuming that the Liberals belong in government or official opposition. Times have changed since Chrétien and his cronies stretched their dynasty from coast to coast to coast.Trudeau’s team followed up with

another uncomfortably friendly email after his speech:“Busy day. Just back from the kids’

end of year school show, and found some more time to write.”Thanks, buddy! Wanna grab a bite

after the game? Trudeau’s campaign team would do well to release the leader from his manicured campaign roll-out so he can engage with everyday Canadians about real issues in an unscripted setting. People want to hear what each potential prime minister really thinks, but if that means reading poorly written text messages from Trudeau, they might just end up checking out.

In the last year and a half at least 22 dogs have been stolen in the

Okanagan and at least 52 more have vanished without a trace. Our beloved dog Charlie was one of them.

Before our five-year-old white Cockapoo went missing three months ago, I’d never thought about dog-napping. But after an extensive search failed to find him or any remains, we were left wondering if someone had taken our boy.

By then I’d already started connecting with other people who were missing dogs and was alarmed at how many there were. Not knowing if these numbers were higher than normal, I asked Gina Knutsen, a woman who’s been running a popular and helpful page on Facebook called Okana-gan Lost and Found Pets.

“It used to be that when a dog went missing it was found,” she said.

“Not always with a happy ending, but at least the families would have some closure. Lately more and more dogs have been just disappearing, and it’s clearly not all because of wildlife.”

At about the time we first began looking for Charlie, Brad Tanner found his fam-ily’s cherished dog, Chocco

– but it was far from the happy ending they were desperate for. Brad, a safety manager in the oil fields, conducted an exhaustive and very public four-week search which resulted in the discovery that their five-year old Chesapeake had been shot to death at point blank range to the back of his head eight miles from home in Fort St. John.

Brad didn’t know about all the dogs being stolen in his area until Chocco vanished. And unlike the Okanagan, where dog flipping seems to be the biggest reason for these thefts, in his area dog fighting seems to be the primary motive.

Of course canines are taken for other intentions as well, such as breeding, lab testing, revenge, ransom and the unthinkable.

When Chocco was stolen Brad faced what all of us with missing dogs do: a lack of direction when time is of

the essence.“There were too many

rescue groups to contact ef-fectively,” he said. “Shelters, dog controls and vet clinics were not helpful after hours, and legislation doesn’t ex-ist to help in the case of a stolen dog.”

He recognized the need for a more organized approach but found the local govern-mental borders, boundaries and jurisdictions got in the way since there was little to no connections between them.

Realizing that the only solution was for pet lovers to take control and help each other, “Chocco’s Sea of Green” was created.

The program is designed with two main components: a dedicated network of con-nected and organized pet lovers, as well as one central social media point with a thorough identification system.

With Sea of Green, pets are identified with a green tag, and stickers and signs are put up in driveways and car windows to identify members, warning potential thieves that they are in a pet safe community.

The program also includes PetLynx, a company that has a database of approxi-mately one million regis-

tered pets.“PetLynx helps about

2000 animals get home every month in Canada,” Brad said. “This online database is already in place and it’s the only automated recovery system that allows anyone to post free lost and found reports that facilitate instant online sharing of pet information across North America when a pet goes missing.”

The idea behind PetLynx is to reunite missing pets with their families. The idea be-hind Sea of Green is to repel thieves, cutting down on the need for such a service.

Brad advises to never leave your dog unattended in an unlocked area, spay or neuter so it’s not a target for breeders, and use a micro-chip just in case your pet shows up as a found animal out of province one day.

The RCMP have been supportive of the Sea of Green initiative, confirming a noticeable decrease in the number of calls they’re re-ceiving about theft attempts and missing dogs in the Fort St. John area. This is a goal pet owners should aim for in our community and across North America.

As we discussed last time, life-jackets are more

frequently used by those aboard ocean-going vessels than on pleasure craft. Intended for use primarily in ‘abandon ship’ situations or while working on deck in less than ideal conditions, they are generally bulky and uncomfortable to wear, but provide significantly greater protection.

We are quick to note that nothing contained in these columns is intended to dissuade you from hav-ing and using lifejackets, but personal flotation de-vices will usually provide adequate protection for most recreational activi-ties. Regardless of which

you choose, all flotation devices must carry a label that states it has been approved by: Transport Canada; Canadian Coast Guard; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; or, any combination thereof.

Although in many cases they may look virtually identical, there are some key difference between PFDs and lifejackets. Ap-proved for recreational use only, PFDs are gener-ally smaller, less bulky, and more comfortable since they are intended to be worn continuously. However, there are these two significant points to consider: PFDs are less buoyant; and, have limited ability to turn the wearer onto her/his back.

They are intended for use in calmer waters and where rescue will likely occur more quickly. They come in a wide range of styles, sizes and colours, but your choice should be based on one) your needs and the activity in which you’ll be participating, and two) the proper size. More on these below, but please also give careful thought to colour choice: Red, orange or yellow are much more visible in water, particularly when considered against blues, greens, or other dark colours.

The two basic PFDs are: inherently buoyant and inflatable.

The inherently buoyant is a vest-type constructed

with unicellular foam or macro cellular elements. A number of different styles for different activities are available. For example, if you are likely to be operating at high speeds, select a vest with three or more chest straps for security. For BC’s typically colder water, choose one that offers some degree of thermal protection. Ones for specific uses such as sailboarding, kayaking, and canoeing are also available.

The inflatable-type con-tain no inherently buoy-ant materials but instead have inflation devices that allow for oral, manual, or automatic inflation. There are two styles: vest (sometimes referred

to as ”suspender”) and pouch. Vest types can be inflated orally, manually or automatically; and pouch types can be orally or manually inflated. Oral inflation requires the wearer to blow into a small tube attached to the front of the PFD while manual inflation requires the wearer to pull a toggle to activate a CO2 car-tridge.

Automatic inflation can occur in one of two ways, both of which require the disintegration of a small wafer-like element to trig-ger a chain reaction which then activates the CO2 cartridge. In the first in-stance, this chain reaction can be triggered simply by getting the wafer-like

element wet i.e., exposure to rain, spray, or even humidity. The second and newest style is activated by water pressure, mean-ing it must be submerged in four or more inches of water to be activated.

Next time, caring for your flotation devices.

Samples of sweetnessAmata Transition House board members were on hand at the Farmers’ Market Saturday offering tasty treats from market vendors. They are looking to raise their profile in the community and encourage the public to get involved. Many of the vendors donated wares including Bread Peddler, Glen Rosa Gardens, Dawn Moorhead, Coyote Acres Ranch, Lorraine Van De Weghe, Mackin Creek Farm, Kosters’ Farm and Silvquus and North Star House Farm. Small samples of sweetness were also donated by Dawn Moorhead, Nutty Baker, Crazy Pie Lady and Gourmet Minis. There was also the opportunity to sign up new members and learn more about Amata operations.

Community CalendarSPECIAL EVENTS & MEETINGS

Meetings and Special Events, Workshops, Signups and

Non-profi t Groups will run in the Sunday or Wednesday edition. The deadline for the Wednesday Observer

is Monday at noon, and the deadline for the weekend edi-tion is Wednesday at 5 pm. All meeting notices and regular submissions to Community Calendar must be renewed every three months. Due to the volume of material, we

clear the column every three months and only print newly

submitted material.

James Burrows is bringing his brand new album Paradise Cinema to the community of Wells June 29.

Based out of Toronto, and travelling with a five-piece band, Burrows has been described as a punk version of Elvis Presley, evocative of Springsteen, and likened to Blue Rodeo.

With a tricky-to-catagorize style, Paradise Cinema is an album

grounded in the struggle to make the best out of what are all too often bad options.

Heavily influenced by the sounds and spirit of early rock ‘n’ roll, the songs on Paradise Cinema deal with all the uncertainties of 21st century life while struggling to remember what life should feel like and, when possible, dance to spite the odds.

James will be playing

Wells, BC at the Jack O’ Clubs General on June 29 and will be joined by the up tempo motown inspired groove of Rachael Cardiello and The Warm Electric Winter.

Racheal will be fronting her own sets with the band too, in a soulful style which has brought fans to their feet from folkfests to the Victoria Jazz Fest.

Cheryl Macarthy, owner of the Bear’s Paw Cafe,

is excited to be bringing these musicians to Wells.

“James lived in Wells many years ago and we hosted some of his first concerts in B.C., so we’re proud to have him back,” she said.

“We loved his style then and it’s only gotten sharper over time. His partner, Rachael, has been really opening peoples eyes on this tour, so we’re thrilled to help them perform here.”

Burrows and Cardiello will be performaing at Wells’ newest

performance venue, the Jack O Clubs Pub.

Make a reservation for dinner at the Bear’s Paw and then Pay What You Can at the door to the pub.

Show starts at 8:30 p.m., June 29.

For information or dinner reservations, call Dave Jorgenson or Cheryl Macarthy at Bear’s Paw Café 1-866-994-2345. [email protected].

news

Climate change warnings pushed for gas pumpsfrom A7

He called the suggested labels innocuous and doesn’t believe the oil industry would object.

No jurisdiction in Canada has yet made pump warning labels a requirement.

Hulse said the labels would help make the routine act of filling up the tank a choice to be considered more carefully.

“It places responsibility right in the palm of your hand,” Hulse said.

If the concept takes off, he said, specific impact wording and imagery could be developed to tailor the labels to each area.

“In the Lower Mainland it might be sea level rise, flooding,

smog – any number of things – and it might be different in the Interior of B.C., where it might be forest fires and pine beetles,” Hulse said.

“It might be ocean

acidification in coastal areas such as Qualicum Beach, which has had a massive crash in its shellfish industry.”

Richmond Coun. Harold Steves noted handle labels would only be seen by self-serve pump users and suggested larger labels for the pump display be designed that are visible at full-serve stations.

SFU marketing professor Lindsay Meredith said the idea could influence fuel consumption, particularly

among people already considering buying an electric car or choosing other transportation options to reduce their carbon footprint.

“It’s a way of turning up the heat, no doubt about it,” Meredith said.

“Does it get the hard core guy driving the Escalade or the Hummer? Probably not.

Does it get a whole bunch of the younger crowd or the people who are on the margin? You bet your boots it does.”

“In the Lower Mainland it might be sea level rise, flooding, smog – any number of things – and it might be different in the Interior of B.C., where it

might be forest fires and pine beetles.”Our Horizon B.C. campaigner Matt Hulse
