Two Quesnel men have been granted bail after being charged in connec-tion to a shooting.

Mike Mero, 28, was re-leased on bail Monday, while Kale Raymond Comeau was released last month.

Comeau and Mero are being charged with dis-charging a firearm with intent to endanger life and pointing a firearm and breaching in relation to a June 2 shooting inci-dent in the 400 block of Hartley Street.

The rounds did not strike anyone, but pen-etrated a window and siding of a residence.

Sunday, June 3, mem-bers of the Quesnel RCMP executed a search warrant in connection to the shooting.

Shortly after noon on that Sunday the warrant to search was executed on a Red Bluff Road property which resulted in the seizure of a quanti-ty of cocaine, heroin and two prohibited weapons.

Both men are back in Supreme court, Sept. 3 to fix a trial date.

Austin Smith pleads guilty

Austin Smith, charged with fraud over $5,000, has pleaded guilty and has been sentenced.

Smith, who pled guilty last month, received a 12-month conditional sentence and was or-

dered to pay restitution of $23,000.

Smith was charged back in 2009 after an in-vestigation into missing funds from the Quesnel Lacrosse Association. RCMP say charges were in connection with of-fences that occurred be-tween January of 2008 and May of 2009.

Police add extra officers for BBD RCMP will be out in

full force this BB Days weekend.

“Increased police pres-ence will be used to en-sure that everyone enjoys the family oriented com-munity event,” media spokesperson, Cst. Kris-ta Vrolyk said.

“Additional police re-sources will be targeting liquor related offences including open liquor in public, impaired driving and public intoxication. There will be zero toler-ance for liquor related offences.”

Police road checks will also be in place at vari-ous times throughout the weekend.

“Drinking and driving is a senseless crime that claims innocent lives ev-ery year,” Vrolyk said.

“Don’t take a chance – the stakes are too high. If you are planning on drinking during Billy Barker Days, be respon-sible. Plan ahead and en-sure a sober ride home. Don’t drink and drive. Appoint a designated driver or call a taxi.”

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities.

Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help.

Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

JONAS GAGNONObserver Reporter

"Tell them we're loud. Tell them we're too loud," Graeme Peters said, hanging outside of Well's Sunset Theatre in the sun.

Then he laughed and continued to talk to passer-bys and anyone who showed up to take in the show.

It was a promise Speed Control lived up to when they hit the stage, forcing many in the audience to craft makeshift earplugs, or for one woman to fetch her ear protection for shooting as they lled the Sunset Theatre with music.

Speed Control, a three piece band composed of brother Graeme and Jody Peters up front, on guitar and bass respectively, backed up by Ian March on drums, hail out of the land of the summer sun, Whitehorse, Yukon, where there's nothing to do but write rock operas all winter, according to the band.

But before Speed Control got up on the stage, Glenna Garramone eased the audience in with a folksy set, switching from guitar to piano half way through.

Garramone played a mix of originals and Canadian classics, Leonard Cohen and Bryan Adams.

Starting with a song that featured love and maple syrup, Garramone oated through a world of romantic Canadiana in her set, ending in a sing-a-long she taught to the crowd.

Garrramone did nothing to prepare the audience for Speed Control, however. And from their rst note to their last they banged the notes off the very back of the theatre.

Speed Control, with a different bassist, had been through Quesnel earlier in the year on a tour of schools on their 'Rags to Rawk' tour, teaching the history of rock.

And be tting of a band that teaches kids about the genre, Speed Control was joyous, full of energy, at times silly and

moved from melodic punk, to screamed vocals of sludgy base to land rmly on classic, hard rock. But whatever sub-genre of rock they moved through, they played it hard and loud.

Graeme spent the minutes between songs gleefully bantering with his brother and the crowd and telling a variety of stories, from the back story of their songs to stories about teaching his young daughter to protect herself with a kick to the crotch followed by an uppercut. And

whether the band were playing or not, Graeme kept the energy of the show up, while Jody played the straight man to Graeme's zaniness.

The Sunset Theatre was a great intimate venue that encouraged communication with the band, especially after the show when they walked off the stage to chat with the audience.

Don’t Let Investments Take a Vacation

At long last, summer is almost here — which may mean it’s time to put together your traveling plans. Still, while you and your family may enjoy going a summertime trip, there’s one part of your life that should not go on vacation — and that’s your investment portfolio.

So, what can you do to help your investments keep on working all year long, year in and year out? Here are a few suggestions:

Don’t chase after “hot” investments. Many times, you will hear about a “hot” investment, usually a stock. However, by the time you hear about such an investment, it may already be cooling off. Even more importantly, it might not have been appropriate for your needs — and any investment that has either “flamed out” or wasn’t right for you in the first place will not be a “hard worker” in your portfolio.

Monitor “lazy” investments. Under the right circumstances, just about any investment could be of value to you. However, under different scenarios, those same investments may not be doing as much for you. To cite one example, when interest rates are at historic lows, as has been the case recently, and your portfolio contains a relatively large amount of short-term fixed-rate vehicles whose interest payments don’t even keep up with inflation, they could be considered “lazy” investments.

Look for the “multi-taskers.” In most aspects of life, “multi-taskers” are valuable — and it’s the same in the investment world. Can you find a particular type of investment that may be able to achieve multiple goals at the same time? Consider dividend-paying stocks. If you need the income to supplement your cash flow, you can cash the dividend checks. And since some companies tend to increase their dividends, your investment in these stocks can serve as a source of potential for rising income, helping keep you ahead of inflation. Furthermore, if you don’t actually need the dividends to support your income stream, you can reinvest them to increase your ownership stake — a method of building your overall wealth. Finally, many dividend-paying stocks also offer significant growth potential. Keep in mind, though, that there are no guarantees, because companies can lower or discontinue their dividends at any time. And, as you know, stocks are subject to market risk, including the potential loss of principal invested.

Don’t take a “time out” from investing. The financial markets regularly move up and down. During the down times, it’s important not to get so discouraged that you decide to take a “time out” from investing until “things get better.” No one can really predict when a downturn will end, but you don’t want to be on the investment sidelines when the market turns around — because the biggest gains can occur in the early stages of a rally. And in any case, if you’re not constantly investing, or at least exploring new investment opportunities, your portfolio could begin to stagnate — or even become “unbalanced,” in which case it may no longer fit your objectives or your risk tolerance.

By following the above suggestions, you can help keep your investments working for you this summer — as well as fall, winter and spring. The road toward achieving your financial goals is a long one — so try to keep moving.

Ethnic outreach returns to haunt premierTOM FLETCHER

Black Press

Premier Christy Clark tried to put the pre-election ethnic outreach scandal behind her Tuesday, after the NDP raised new questions about an apparent effort to silence a former staff member’s complaints about B.C. Liberal Party work done by government staff.

Clark told reporters Tuesday that emails from former B.C. Liberal staffer Brian Bonney were “totally inappropriate … and that’s why he no longer works for government.”

The emails were included in 10,000 pages examined by a team of deputy ministers after the ethnic outreach program was revealed in a leaked memo in March. The plan

to use government staff time to organize events in ethnic communities, then collect names for use in the B.C. Liberal election campaign, resulted in resignations of Clark’s deputy chief of staff and two other government employees and Richmond–Steveston MLA John Yap’s resignation as minister of state for multiculturalism.

International Trade Minister Teresa Wat, who took over responsibility for multiculturalism after the May election, repeated for a second day in question period that the investigation team looked at all documents and took appropriate action.

The 10,000-page package includes a heavily censored

string of emails that identifies Bonney as a participant. The first part appears directed at the unnamed staffer.

“We will see if we can help find you something else – can you send me your resume? Send it to Brian also,” one email says.

The next one says: “Have [former minister of state for multiculturalism] Harry Bloy meet with her and explain how doing anything would damage the premier and the party. Have him say how he will try to find her work and get her back involved.

“If need be, offer x dollars per month to do non-public work up to the election (developing her database of potential supporters).”

Clark said the email

was examined in the review, led by her deputy minister John Dyble, and there was no evidence it was ever acted upon. An official in the premier’s office said the woman discussed in the email was a temporary employee

who left government employment in September 2012.

In the legislature Tuesday, NDP critics demanded to know if the woman in the emails was offered another job, or if she was interviewed in the investigation.

Richmond Centre MLA Teresa Wat, appointed

by Premier Christy Clark to take charge of international trade and

multiculturalism, has been under fire in the

legislature over events that took place before

she was elected in May.File photo

Memories“The best part about

memories, is making them.”– My mom

Another BB Days is upon us and with it an opportunity to make fabulous memories.

So let’s keep that in mind, OK? Granted, I figure if you’re reading

this, you’re not “that” person hammered at the park, drinking and driving and putting everyone at risk, or generally being an a-hole.But still, we all can play a part

in keeping our amazing annual festival as safe and family-friendly as possible. And that truly is what this event

is all about – family, memories and community.Sure go out and hit up the beer

gardens, Crash to Pass, rodeo, Roller Derby, barn dance, park and vendors… take it all in, but be mindful you’re not the only one celebrating. This event is about the kids. It’s

about our amazing volunteers and the incredibly hard work they put in throughout the entire year to ensure we still have one of the biggest free festivals in British Columbia. My son woke up this morning

(Thursday) at 5 a.m. full of excitement, wonder and enthusiasm – it was infectious.I have to admit, BB Days isn’t the

same when you’re working the entire weekend, but to hear him singing the infamous Billy Barker Days song, while dancing around in his underwear, had me looking at the three-day event with new eyes. Let’s showcase our community

to be respectful, enthusiastic and mindful of others.Let’s make sure we thank those

volunteers in their bright-yellow shirts – without them, this weekend would cease to exist. If you are going to overindulge,

choose an appropriate location and for the love of all things Holy, be sure to plan a safe way home. Thank you to everyone who have

worked so hard to keep this festival going and in doing so helping us build some amazing memories.

–Autumn MacDonald, Observer

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about my positive experience

with Facebook and encouraged people – my father, grandmother and in-laws in particular – to join. Later I received a lengthy email from a Facebook friend that called the article “crappy and mindless” and me “ignorant and flaky” for writing it.

Typically I’m not bothered when people give me negative feedback. It’s just part and parcel of the gig whenever you put yourself out there. It doesn’t matter if you’re a highly paid superstar or a starving artist, if you’re releasing your work for public consumption, you have to be prepared for harsh, impolite criticism. But for some reason, on this occasion, it stung for  a few minutes.

I tried to figure out why this particular critique would affect me when most others were easily brushed aside.

Perhaps, I thought, it was because it was coming from a fellow artist who I’d perceived as supportive of other artists and their freedom of expression.

But after scolding me for promoting Facebook during “the recent spy revelations,” I could see he wasn’t willing to accept that I had a different perception of it than he did.

He blamed the social media tyrant, and people like me who post our work on it for free, as the reason people’s attitudes toward media and art had been negatively influenced.

Was it because I didn’t completely disagree with him that his message affected me?

I started to doubt myself, wondering if maybe he was right and I was just a floozy writing drivel and hurting artists with my careless recommendation.

I would have re-read my article about Facebook if I didn’t have such an aversion to revisiting my work.

Instead I sent him an email explaining that I agreed the Internet has been a devastating blow for artists and writers in many ways, but since it wasn’t going anywhere, we, like everyone else, would have to learn to work within our changing world.

And since I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive experience with Facebook, I strongly stood by my promotion of it, pointing out that it could be a terrific tool for several reasons. Connecting with fellow artists like him for example.

Unfortunately, he had already de-friended me.

In a moment of weakness, and without naming him, I posted my feelings on Facebook and received an immediate and tremendous amount of support from friends I know personally, as well as friends I only know online.

For me this confirmed a few things. Number one: my skin isn’t as thick as I thought it was.

Number two: I’m only human, so it’s okay to get affected sometimes. And number three: my Facebook friends are wonderful.

I don’t always agree with

the opinions they post, and I love that, but what a privilege to have such a cool community of friends to laugh with and learn from.

So much wisdom, advice and encouragement was posted by so many of them when I needed it last Saturday morning.

My author friend James C. Tanner said: “A writer writes because it is a natural voice for them, the same way a bird sings. There are those who will enjoy the sound of a bird while others will look for a stone to try and strike it down.”

And my cartoonist friend Bob D’Amico wrote: “The way people freely fling around their opinions is equal to being a dog walking down the block, peeing on everything it passes.”

See, Dad? It’s not just pictures of the grandkids you’re missing out on by not being on Facebook.

If you join, just remember to keep your social insurance number to yourself and prepare for a few messy mutts.

When I was

listening to the radio, there was a discussion about triage. The word triage is not very well known, so here is a shortened dictionary version of this word.

“The sorting of a large number of battle causalities, accident victims etc. by a system of priorities which ensures that those with the best chance of benefiting from treatment are looked after first.”

In the radio program I was listening to, it was mentioned that the spotted owl could be saved but at the cost of the more aggressive barred owl who would be eliminated.

Apparently, the barred owls are driving the spotted owls out of their territory or killing them. The triage system is now used by scientist and other interested parties to decide who is going to survive and who is not. It blew me away that the notion of saving one species at the cost of another species even existed. What about survival of the fittest, which to me seems to be the barred owl because it is already wiping out the spotted owl.

After destroying the habitats of I don’t know how many species, we are going to play God and decide who is going to survive?

On what grounds do we have the right to even make these decisions when we still pollute, poison and destroy habitats on a greater scale then ever before.

There are already many animals that are protected, but there are a heck of a lot more that are not. The latest science report states that in the last ten years the world is warming faster than ever before. Should we not look at the cause instead of the result?

Hundreds of species

already died out or are on the brink. This is not a Noah’s ark story where two animals of each kind were on board and they are responsible for the present animal life on

earth including people.Just like this story is unreal,

so is the notion that we can pick and choose who will survive and who will not. Who knows what will survive when the warming of the earth continues at the present rate.

There are too many complications related to warming. As an example, the vegetation the caribou depends on in the North bloomed earlier than normal. As a result the caribou had no or very little food when they got there and left or died.

The Inuit and polar bears, who depend on the caribou for food, are now in trouble and so it goes on and on. The prediction is that what we have seen so far in storms, floods, tornadoes etc. will only get worse as time progresses.

It is only logical that these changes will not only affect humans, but all life on earth. To preselect who and what is going to survive is an exercise in futility because there are way too many uncertainties including if any existing life will survive.

One thing is for sure, if we do not change our ways very soon the future will not be very secure in the very near future.

So far most of the science predictions are coming through and we have an impressive record of human failure when it comes to accepting and realistically dealing with what is happening on planet earth.

The air boss has the primary responsibility for air show op-erations on the active taxiways, runways and the surrounding air show demonstration area. The air boss controls the event environ-ment including air space and other aviation activities.

Spectators may not ever see this diminutive dynamo but know that for the past 13 years Donna Flynn has been bossing at air shows and for the second year in a row will be the air boss for Skyfest – Ques-nel’s International Air Show.

However, her interest in aviation started much earlier.

It was the winter of 1987 when Flynn obtained her private license and in 1989 earned her commer-cial license. During this time she caught the air show bug while volunteering at the Vanderhoof International Airshow.

But not as a pilot. Flynn worked on the flight operations side of the show.

After spending six years running a float-based business in Fort St. James, in 1998 she swung into an airshow-based business which she moved to Vancouver in 2000.

Eventually she established Show-line Airshow Services Ltd., which specializes in the Air Bossing and Flight Operations of an air event. During a typical show season, Flynn works anywhere from eight to 10 air shows events. She has completed more than 250 shows and media days at more than 27 sites in Canada and the United States. She has worked with all the North American jet and skydiving teams.

Quesnel welcomes Donna Flynn to its premier aviation event.

Skyfest 2013 tickets are now available at Circle S and at the Tourist Bureau. Adult Day Pass $15, Weekend – $25, Youth Day Pass $4. Weekend $7. Family Day Pass $40. Weekend – $65. Camp-ing packages also available.

The voice of any airshow needs to be knowledgeable, authoritative and at times, humorous.

Ric Peterson has spent the past 20 years becoming the best airshow announcer he can be. Coupled with his experience as a broadcaster and race car an-nouncer, Peterson’s vast experi-ence and passion have created a seasoned microphone veteran with a flair for aviation. Quesnel Sky-fest is lucky to have such a quality announcer at this year’s Skyfest - Quesnel’s International Airshow.

He’s announced all over the world and has the memories to prove it.

“I have had the unforgettable opportunity to hold the control stick of an Avro Arrow at the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa, touched the fabric of the Wright Flyer at the Paul Garber Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland, toured Orville and Wilbur’s bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio and stood on the banks of Bras d’Or Lake near Baddeck, Nova Scotia,” he said.

“I’ve travelled to the Mojave Desert, covered the space shuttle launches in Florida, visited the ‘bone yard’ in Arizona and the Paris Air Show in France where I

found the plaque marking the spot where Lindbergh shut down the Spirit of St. Louis hidden under a garbage can at Le Bourget.”

Air show announcing has taken Peterson to Base Borden – the birthplace of the RCAF, Moose Jaw – the home of the Snowbirds as well as 4 Wing Cold Lake, host of Maple Flag and Canada’s flight test facilities.

“I have been around airplanes since I was knee high to a tail wheel and was barely a year old when my father set me on the spinner of the Piper Cub he loved,” Peterson said.

“The memory of his passion for flight is with me at the airports and museums I visit and I like nothing better than to spark in someone else the same passion my father bestowed to me.”

Be sure to take note of Peterson’s passion as you follow his vocal directions during Skyfest this year.

Skyfest 2013 tickets are now available for purchase at Circle S and at the Tourist Bureau.  Adult Day Pass $15, Weekend – $25, Youth Day Pass $4. Weekend $7. Family Day Pass $40. Weekend – $65. Camping packages also available.

We’d like to thank Annie for encour-aging us to continue submitting these stories over the years. As

well, we really appreciate the comments and support from you, the readers of the Quesnel Cariboo Observer.

As you may recall, our cycle tour last year was cut short due to a family emergency.  For-tunately, all is now well as Heather’s Dad Bruce is in the best of care at Dunrovin. Thanks to everyone there for all they’re doing for him. We’ve been planning to do an ex-tended cycle tour for a number of years and this year the green lights were in our favour so we’re off on another grand tour.

North America offers some of the most incred-ible cycle touring on the planet. We’ve toured extensively in the Pacific Northwest in both the US and Canada. This year, we’ll add another couple of US states

to our list, Wyoming and Utah. You might ask, why Utah? We’ve decided to ride to a business convention rather than fly! The tour is going to be amazing. We left Kamloops, B.C. on June 23 and plan to arrive in Salt Lake City, Utah around Aug. 12.

Heading south from Kamloops, we had a few weather challenges with torrential rain and ar-rived in Kelowna June 25 to more rain.

No worries, the forecast is for better weather as we make our way towards the border cross-ing south of Christina Lake. Our tour takes us through eastern Washington and northern Idaho and we’ll cross the continental divide at the top of the Lost Trail Pass south of Hamil-ton, Montana.

We then ride the high desert of Western Mon-tana southward towards Yellowstone. Trying to stay out of the hotter lowlands we’ll pedal past the Grand Tetons near Jackson, Wyoming and then make our way towards the Wasatch National Forest north of Salt Lake City.

We’re looking forward to meeting lots of people along the way. That’s half the fun of cycle touring!  Finding out about people – learning about others and what matters to them.  Sharing our ideas – particularly about cycling and its benefits for us and the planet.

We celebrated Canada Day in Grand Forks, arriving just in time to see the parade down Main Street. In a few days, we’ll be in Colville, Washington where our neighbours to the south will be celebrating their own national holiday. Two holidays in one week – sounds like cycle touring!

True to the new technology wave, we’ll be updating our ride’s blog along the way. On the blog you an also track our ride on “Our Route” page. Visit www.xercisefiles.wordpress.com.

The Quesnel Pipes and Drums are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. An impressive amount of time to have a pipe band in existence!  What better way to celebrate this anniver-sary than by taking the pipe band to the Kamloops Highland Games, July 13 and competing against other bands from around the province? There were bands from Vancouver, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon and Williams Lake. Quesnel Pipes and Drums are proud to say that they placed third out of seven bands in Grade four.  (The competion grades are grade one through five, with grade one be-ing the most highly skilled bands and grade five being beginner bands.)

Placing third was particularly mean-ingful as the competition was judged by some of the best pipers and drum-mers in the world! Simon Fraser Uni-versity Pipe Band also competed at the games and it is always a real treat to be in the presence of the six-time World

Champions! Some members of the Quesnel Pipes

and Drums competed individually, which is a great accomplishment. It’s one thing to compete with the pipe band, but it is another level entirely to be out there by yourself in front of a judge.

Judy Campbell and Lisa McCar-gar competed in the grade three class, playing a strathspey/reel set, a jig and a piobaireachd (bagpipe classical music). Roger  Williamson and Becky Duncan (an associate member from the Yukon) competed in the adult class, playing a slow air, a 6/8 march and Roger also played a piobaireachd.

The Quesnel Pipes and Drums are very proud of their placing at the Kamloops Highland Games and very happy with the progress they have been making in improving their skills and technique. The band will be in the upcoming Billy Barker Days Parade on Saturday, so, come cheer them on!

Dogs have personalities too, as any owner can tell you. What happens when

the personality of the dog does not match with an owner’s situation? The dog loses out. That is part of

Tango’s story.Tango is a Jack Russell Terrier

with plenty of attitude. Her story begins when she was part of a ‘back yard’ breeding program. She lived in a kennel and had several litters. But this is not what she was bred for.

She needed to be out and active. After several years of this, she seemed to go crazy and began ob-sessing on things, acting out and causing problems.

Since she was not good with children, she was surrendered to the girls at the Crooked Leg Ranch and they had the job of

introducing her to a ‘normal’ dog’s life. Happily, an adoption was arranged and Tango became the focus of an active life with her new owner. All was great for a year until new people and a new dog were brought into her world. This meant that Tango was no longer the centre of attention so she bit the other dog and was again surrendered.

As it happens, the ranch had a visitor at this time. Caroline, from Germany, was working as part of a Farm Stay program. Caroline and Tango fell in love. They did chores and watched TV together. All was good but, Caroline was due to y home soon. What could they do?

It didn’t take Caroline long to realize that Tango had to go home with her. Rabies shots, federal veterinarian paperwork and quar-antine restrictions were all part of the process that was amazingly smooth. Today, Tango is a happy German princess.

Research the breed of your dog before you choose one so that its personality can best t your situation. As well, be wary of buying a puppy online because the conditions are often not what you would like for your dog.

New Hospital Addition Complete

by April 30

“April 30 is the target date Narod Construction Ltd. is shooting for completion of the addition to G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital currently well under way. When the tenders were first called, it was hoped the job could be completed by November, but delays in getting started have advanced completion into April. Hospital Administrator Darrald Thompson explains that the contract allows 300 working days for completion, and from the actual starting date this takes completion into April. An unexpected tie-up developed when it was discovered that there had been a change in the original drainage system and a revision of this was necessary before work could get under way. Narod Construction, prime contractors on the project, hopes to have concrete work completed by September and from there on the work will be on the interior.”

Quesnel hits treasure chest in LangleyQuesnel Special Olympics athletes pull in medals

JONAS GAGNONObserver Reporter

Last week was the golden culmination of nearly a year of preparation and training for a group of Quesnel athletes as they vied, and got more often than not, medals at the Summer Special Olympics.

“We’re very pleased and proud about how we did, not just in each sport, but as a team period,” said bowler Cory Melnychuk.

The B.C. Special Olympics were the results of months, up to a year, of training, having qualified for the games last year.

Quesnel fielded 17 athletes and 16 of those returned with a medal, or two or more, around their necks.

Dean Cake, Cory Melnychuk, Eldon Carter and Jean Carter, joined by Jordan Korum of Prince George, earned gold in five-pin bowling. Julie Calihou won five golds across rhythmic gymnastics, one in each discipline: hoop, rope, ball, ribbon and an overall. Paulette Prosk swam to a double gold finish in 25m backstroke and 50m

backstroke. Aaron Allinson earned a silver in 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle.

Jerman Severeid, Danny Dodgson, Travis Burt, Brock Terlesky, Scott Jonasson, Rob Beiswanger, Max Nelson and Clayton Bauder fought hard for a bronze in A division soccer.

Martin Scriver joined Prince George’s bowling team, earning a bronze.

Glenda Melnychuk also participated as a member of Region 7 soccer team.

The team bussed to the Prince George Airport, where they were greeted by a banner wishing them good luck on their trip. They joined the rest of the zone 8, roughly the Prince George/Quesnel areas athletes there, then flew down to Vancouver and bussed on to Langley where they settled in.

The opening ceremonies, complete with the lighting of the torch, left it’s imprint on the athletes.

Dodgson said it was one of the highlights of the games for him, watching a variety of B.C athletes like Trevor Linden and Travis Lulay leading

the teams in.“We were

all excited to get everything going and underway,” he said.

From there the teams put their heads down and focused on winning.

The bowlers kept their heads down, focusing so hard on the game they decided not to track their progress over the weekend to keep from psyching themselves out.

“We really want it to be a surprise and trust me it was,” Melnychuk said.

The soccer team had a particularly hard fight, as they got bumped up from the B division, where they qualified, to the A division against Surrey and Richmond. The tournament started out with a hard loss, but the team learned to keep fighting and pursued that throughout the games, up to their 4-1 loss against Surrey, who went on to win gold in the final.

“We could proudly walk off the field after the game, knowing that we’d done everything we could against the

eventual winners. Everyone remarked on Quesnel’s spirit and tenacity, and I was proud that the players showed the skill and mental fortitude that allowed them to keep the game close,” coach Rick Prosk said.

“The team definitely earned its bronze.”

After all that work and all those medals, the team was tired and happy with the results and for the provincial stage on which they performed.

“It allowed us to show our talents to the rest of the province and we really reaped the benefits,” Melnychuk said.

Now the athletes are in a kind of limbo, as they wait to see if they have earned a berth in nationals next year in Vancouver.

The athletes were accompanied by their coaching staff including: coaching/mission staff, Karen Prosk; team manager, Shelly Calihou, one-to-one support for Julie Calihou; Deborah Evans, swimming coach; Doreen O’Brien, bowling coach; Ellen Martz, Prince George 10-pin bowling coach; and Dave Robson, Crystal Ferreira, and coach Rick Prosk who helped with the soccer team.

"We're very pleased and proud about how we did, not just in

each sport, but as a team period,"–Bowler Cory Melnychuk

Three Gold Pan seniors represented not only Quesnel, but the entire province of B.C. with a bronze medal performance at the Club 55+ Triples Team National Championships.

“It’s the biggest tournament for us,” team captain Lewis Hulet said.

Bernie Ens, Hulet and Bob Slater came together earlier this year to make a dream team that took bronze the top levels of the sport for the men.

But before that, a slightly different team, composed of Hulet, Slater and Lawrence Dubuc, won the house championship, moving them on to the northern zones, where they once again made their way to the top, opening up a door to provincials at Juniper Lanes

in Cranbrook. The men ran away with

the provincial tournament, with Slater bagging a 360 triple in the first three games on the way to winning by a 143 point gap.

Dubuc, however, couldn’t make the trip and was replaced by Enns.

The win not only opened a berth for them in the nationals, but paid their way to Edmonton to take

on the nation for the first time in the men’s considerable history in bowling.

The men went on to the nationals at the Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes in Edmonton where they took on the rest of the nation.

"It was pretty tough bowling – we were against all the best teams," Slater said.

When the team finally hit the lanes in Edmonton, they were ready to get things done.

The team faced 10 games over the course of two days, which tested the men’s, each over seventy, endurance and took it’s toll.

A break between the first four games and the last two games caused some stiffness, especially in 85 year-old Hulet.

The team won six of its ten games, which was based on points over average and how the score competed against the opposing team.

Southern Ontario and Alberta both scored 8 points by winning eight of their ten games forcing the tournament to a playoff, which was decided in Southern Ontario’s favour, with Alberta netting second.

On the way back the team had a flying adventure, trapped in limbo at the Vancouver airport for hours before finally getting their plane home to show off their medals.

Quesnel also had a successful women’s team.

Marg Palik, Leona Curtis and Terri Schmitke took their game all the way to provincials for the women, where they finished second, just short of finding a position in nationals next to the men.

Bernie Ens, Lewis Hulet and Bob Slater stand proud with their bronze medals.

Quesnel Ropers and Riders had two chances to sharpen their skills last weekend, a rodeo in Valemont and one in Pritchard, ahead of their hometown rodeo.

In Valemont, the Wills girls were once again on top in junior barrel racing, McKenzie taking first and Lane a tenth of a second behind in second. Another Quesnel rider, Taylor Cherry finished in third.

Cherry moved up two positions in junior pole bending to take first by more than three seconds. Houston's Carli Wardrop finished in second, followed closely by Cache Creek's Sofeya Smith.

Alaysha Kushneryk of Hinton took first in pee wee pole bending, followed by Quesnel’s Dyson LeNeve. Cache Creek's Gracie Antoine took third.

Quesnel's Clayton Honeybourn beat all comers handily in tie-down roping. Riley Isnardy of Cache Creek followed, two seconds behind, in second. Merritt's Derek Mobbs rounded out the top three.

Gold Pan resident Steve Hohmann performed well in Valemont, taking a first in saddle Bronc, riding Big Heart. Chilliwack's Kaila Mussel took second on Mixed Martini, followed by Kamloops' Ryland DeRose on Kitty Hawk.

Cariboo Triathlon club members are spear-ing off around the province this summer to compete in a pair of triathlons.

“The Club wants to wish 'good luck' to members Heather Fisher, David Osmond, and Fawn Williams as they all venture out to race this weekend, as well as those run-ning the Hallis Lake race,” club president, Stacey Osmond said.

Fisher and Williams head off to Penticton to compete in the Peach Classsic this Sunday while David Osmond will be competing in the Prince George Triathlon on the same day.

Contact Osmond at [email protected] or call 250-983-9811 to join.

Forged in the crucible of Hell WeekIn preparation for the coming provincials,

the Sea Lions put their bodies through the test, spending 30 hours in the pool and 15 hours doing dryland over the week, culminating in the kilometre and a half swim across Dragon Lake.

“It was challenging,” Mia Kozak, one of the Sea Lions who participated said of the week.

She said the 100 100s, a continuous swim back and forth to push the swimmers, was the most challenging aspect of the week.

Fifteen Sea Lions, from age 8-15, participated in the push to get tter and faster in the pool.

The Sea Lions head to provincials August 15.

from A19In breakaway roping, Charlie Soffel of

Vanderhoof and Jake Herman of Pritchard tied for rst. Troy Gerard took third.

Troy Gerard made a two-place jump in junior breakaway roping to rst. Quesnel's Sharla Hancock and Kyle Bell tied in 2/3.

Kamloops' Laura James rode to the top in ladies barrel racing, followed closely by Monica Oram of Logan Lake. Kirstin Bell of Houston took third.

Cherry made out better in Pritchard than she did in Valemont, taking rst in junior barrel racing. Cache Creek's Sofeya Smith took second, followed by Brett Wills of Kamloops in third.

Continuing with the juniors, Blaine Manuel took rst in junior steer riding. Kyle Bell, Jackson Scott of Kamloops and Devon Robbins of Alkali Lake all tied in second/third.

Elly Farmer of Savona was the fastest pee wee around the barrel, followed by Penticton's Vanessa Cavely in second and Zoey Hemming of Vernon in third.

Next up it's our time to shine at the Quesnel Rodeo. Git yer boots on Quesnel.

Left: Baylee McGillivary, the nearest swimmer, and Olivia Crocker make their way across Dragon Lake. Below: the Sea Lions start their swim across the lake.

THEATRE ARTS

Lucas Myers in hello baby! sunset theatre’s rst play of the summer season

Lucas Myers’ hilarious and unique brand of observational humour will be gracing the Sunset Theatre Stage in Wells, B.C. on July 19 – 20, 8 p.m.

Presented by the SKAM Board of Directors, the show was a nod to Artistic Pro-ducer Matthew Payne’s recent foray into parenthood. This instructional lecture by a rst-time semi-competent father answers the burning question

of what happens when a self-involved man-child becomes a new father, as well as provid-ing helpful hints for other fathers-to-be such as:  “Is your life as you know it really over?” And “Can you safely operate a fax machine/belt sander/breast pump on two hours sleep?”  And “Is it really possible to become so ob-sessed with bowel movements and nipples that you a make up little nicknames for them? Like ‘Jerome’?  Or ‘Kathy?’”

Lucas Myers is a profes-sional actor, songwriter and playwright and has appeared in many productions in major theatres across Canada as well as touring internation-ally to Europe, New Zealand, Mexico, Central Asia, and Ymir.

Tickets are $15 and available in advance or at the door. Visit online at sunset-theatre.com.

Obituary Tribute

Mervin QuechuckFebruary 11, 1948 ~ June 9, 2013

Quechuck Mervin beloved husband of Audrey Quechuck passed away Sunday evening June 9, 2013 at Quesnel Hospice House after his brief battle with cancer; he was 65 years of age. Mervin was born in Swan Plain Saskatchewan on February 11, 1948, the only son of Mike and Lillian Quechuck. Mervin moved to Quesnel BC in 1963 where he worked in the logging industry, owned Quesnel Courier and Taxi Company, and was employed for the past 4 years at the local CO-OP. On July 10, 1971 Mervin was united in marriage to Audrey Deters at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The couple continued to live in Quesnel and had 5 children Blaine, Selena (Matt) Gook, Jason, Shaun, and Paige (Dana) Flanagan. Mervin had 4 grandchildren that he was immensely proud of Jordan Quechuck son of Shaun, Travis Gook son of Selena and Matt and Kayla and Kassidy Flanagan daughters of Paige and Dana. Mervin was an active member of the local

Knights of Columbus and could be seen working at the Knights Concession at Billy Barker Days, 4H Events and the Quesnel and District Twin Arenas. Mervin was an active member of his parish by volunteering to work at the monthly Sunday pancake breakfasts, Lobster dinners in the early 1980’s and the recent fundraising dinners for St. Ann’s School. Mervin was predeceased by his parents Mike and Lillian Quechuck. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Audrey their 5 children and 4 grandchildren and his only sister Marian (Pete) Rudachyk of Norquay Saskatchewan. Prayer services were held on Friday June 14, 2013 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial was held on Saturday June 15, 2013 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Peyton as celebrant. Internment followed in the Quesnel City Cemetery with Keith Holtzman, Dan Canuel, Lawrence Derkatch, Jim Worobetz, Eugene Holowachuk and Mike Kampman as

pallbearers. In lieu of fl owers Mervin requested to have a memorial fund set up with the Knights of Columbus to hold an annual Christmas dinner for the less fortunate in our community. If you wish to donate to this event please contact St. Ann’s Parish. Audrey and the family would like to thank Dr. van Dyk, the nurses at GR Baker Hospital, the Nurses and Volunteers at the Quesnel Hospice House and the Doctors, Technicians and staff at the Prince George Cancer Center for the compassionate care they gave Mervin during his illness. They would also like to thank the many people that sent cards, food, fl owers, and prayers to Mervin and the family.
