At this meeting, for his long, distinguished and meritorious service to the Association, Kevin Weise of the Darling Downs Branch, was made a Life Member of the Association. NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE MEDAL I continue to be pleased with the number of Medals being applied for and presented throughout the state to members, non members and to close relatives. At Police Headquarters on 30 June 2016 Phil Hocken senior and Phil Hocken junior received their National Police Service Medal from Commissioner Ian Stewart (Phil senior also received the Queensland Police Service Medal) and on 4 July 2016 Gerry Brown received his Medal from Acting Assistant Commissioner Allan McCarthy. NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE MEDAL I continue to be pleased with the number of Medals being applied for and presented throughout the state to members, non members and to close relatives. With the issue date being taken back over thirty three years, many older former members have received or are still receiving the medal. (I have mentioned previously how this medal can be awarded posthumously as distinct from the Queensland Police Service Medal which cannot be awarded in that manner). BRANCH BYTES News from around the branches.BUNDABERG: Corrice and Lawrie Ballin have moved from PM Village, Bald Hills, into high care at Carinity Aged Care at Kelvin Grove in Brisbane. They are both doing as well as can be expected. Police Legacy Charity Bowls Day – disbursement of funds. It was resolved to distribute $2500 to Police Legacy and $100 to the Salvation Army, St Vincent’s De Paul, Red Cross, Diabetes Foundation and the Cancer Council. Doug Hoare conducted the election at the AGM held on 29 July 2016 which resulted as follows: President – Rowan Bond, Vice President – Bob Materna, Treasurer – John Francis, Secretary – Grannie Pearce, Assistant Secretary – Mary Waugh, Welfare Officers – Ian Hargrave and Mary Waugh (John Read if Ian and Mary are unavailable) and Bowls Co-Ordinator – Jack Field. Welfare: Mary Waugh or Ian Hargrave in recent times have visited or spoken to Joan Bick, Ken Strohfeldt, Cherrol Hayes and Moreen Denny who suffered a fall recently. Welfare from the 26 August 2016 meeting: Bob Hayes had been in the Mater Hospital in Bundaberg for treatment with antibiotics. Elwyn Jones and Keith Lipp made it along to the August meeting. Both are going OK. Gordon Storer is going as well as can be expected. He has good days and bad days. Discussion took place re the White Cloud Foundation and hopefully help can be extended to include retired emergency personnel such as police officers. Barry Cope advised that there was a liaison officer working at the RSL currently regarding this issue and she would be invited to address the September meeting. On the Bowls Front: The team played in President’s day at ATW on 7 August 2016 where they came up against a very strong home team. The team comprised of Jack Field, Grannie Pearce, Gerry Van Halen and Tony Olsen. The team ran a close second in the game. The same team played again on 21 August at Bargara President’s Day. Once again they struck a strong team from ICM and came in second. Next meeting: 30 September 2016.

GOLD COAST:The Currumbin RSL Club was the venue for the Branch’s 7 June 2016 meeting. Guest speaker: Peter Smith from the Fire and Rescue Service spoke about fire prevention in the house. Veteran Member Don Braithwaite introduced a

second book published by the Murphy family in conjunction with Des Sturgess Q.C. The book is in response to and in rebuttal of allegations made in Matthew Condon’s latest book All Fall Down alleging that Tony Murphy’s wife Maureen was personally involved in the death of prostitute Shirley Brifman. The Branch’s 5 July 2016 meeting was held at the Southport RSL Club. Mike and Noela Sparkes hosted the BBQ on 25 August 2016. Treasurer Neil Raward, who has undergone horrendous treatment for throat cancer, showed great fortitude and dedication in attending the meeting. Neil, as usual, was the chief organiser of the Branch’s 37th luncheon held at Twin Towns RSL Club on 12 July 2016. The luncheon was a huge success and enjoyed by those who attended. The annual and general meetings were held at the Currumbin RSL Club on 2 August 2016. Don Braithwaite conducted the election with the following result: President – Russell Robertson, Vice President – Col Sullivan, Secretary – David McNamara, Treasurer/Social Secretary – Neil Raward, Protocol Officer – Des Sorensen and Welfare Officers – Russell Robertson and Col Sullivan. At the general meeting members were advised that Denis and Jan Chalker would host a BBQ on 18 October 2016. Welfare: Neil Raward, Pat O’Brien, Denis Chalker, Bob Gillespie and Don Braithwaite have all been battling various health issues recently. However, they all made the effort and attended the meetings. The 6 September 2016 meeting was held at the Southport RSL Club. Des Sorensen acted as Chairman. Des Sorensen presented Tim Dunn with his National Police Service Medal. Welfare: John Meskell is no longer driving as he is unwell. Neil Raward is in remission after months of treatment for throat cancer and Pat O’Brien is still experiencing problems with his cancer issues. Next meeting: Currumbin RSL Club on 4 October 2016.

GYMPIE: The annual and general meetings were held at the Victory Hotel on 27 July 2016. Keith Bunkum conducted the election which resulted as follows: President – Laurie Pointing, Vice President – Leigh Burt, Secretary – Norm Breen, Treasurer – Glen Durre and Welfare Officers – Laurie Pointing and Chris Seng. Welfare: Chris Seng advised that he had made welfare

calls to Col King, Bob Hillcoat, Arthur Vonhoff and Shane Moss. President Laurie and Secretary Norm Breen paid a visit to Ivor Lane when he was in hospital in Gympie before he returned to his home at Kabara Nursing Home at Cooroy. Two significant birthdays recently, Rex Allison 92 and Ivor Lane 93. Newly elected Federal Member for Wide Bay, former Senior Constable Llew O’Brien, was welcomed to the meeting by President Laurie Pointing and congratulated on his election. Secretary Norm Breen raised the possibility of holding some of the meetings at Tin Can Bay and Aub Nieborg is going to look for a suitable venue. The Albert Park Bowls Club was the venue for the Branch’s annual luncheon. Members from Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg, together with regional serving police, joined local members and their partners. President Laurie was master of ceremonies and did a great job organising and introducing the proceedings. The guest speaker was Detective Superintendent Mick Niland who spoke on the operation of Task Force Maxima which has been dealing with outlaw motorcycle gangs. Other speakers included the member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien MP, who spoke on his recent election to the Federal Parliament. As this was the 30th anniversary year of the Branch, a large cake was cut by Laurie who celebrated another significant milestone the week earlier. The luncheon was enjoyed by all who attended. Next meeting: 6 October 2016.

LOGAN-BEENLEIGH:There was a big turnout for our 16 June meeting with plenty of interest in our guest speaker, Senior Sergeant Phil Notaro. The Branch continues to grow with some new and old faces joining the Branch. Welcome to Kerry and Jacky Warry and Graham and Marilyn Klupfel who have taken the plunge and transferred over from Redlands. The Branch held the 7th annual general meeting on July 21 with a special outing to Ruby Gardens Over 50’s Resort at Eagleby with bus transport provided from Club Beenleigh on the day. The previous Committee was re-elected. It is - President – Judi Newman, Vice President – Brian Button, Secretary – Terry Ahearn,

Treasurer – John Enright, Welfare Officers – Bob Sawford, Ray Brand and Max Moloney and Raffle Co-ordinator – Joy Moloney. After the meeting members enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a few well-earned drinks at the expense of the Branch. A great day was had by all. The 18 August meeting was held at the new digs of the Club Beenleigh who have completed the refurbishment of the Club. Members enjoyed the new room with the usual large numbers attending. It was pleasing to see club shirts worn by most attending. Our members were treated to a talk by Rod Bloss about his past life as a copper with photos and newsprints which included his service in the English Police. Our member Max Moloney had a gastro problem after eating un-cooked food prepared in his slow cooker which gave up the ghost during cooking. Now call it karma but Max won the Branch meeting raffle which was a slow cooker. Hope he has more luck with this one. Remember our luncheon to be held at Club Beenleigh on Tuesday 25th October commencing at 11.30 am. (Terry Ahearn Secretary).

SUNSHINE COAST:The Branch held its annual luncheon on 24 May 2016 which normally would have been the day of its monthly meeting. Eighty three people were in attendance including widows Clair Jessen and Mary Marnane, Commissioner Ian Stewart, Sunshine Coast District Superintendent Darryl Johnson, Rev Matt Gowan, the new Police Chaplain of the Sunshine Coast District, State President Greg Early, Senior State Vice President Bob Pease and Tina Pizzoni, of Helloworld Roma Street, who donated the lucky door prize. The following Branches were represented: Darling Downs, Gympie and Near North Coast. As usual they had a great array of prizes among which were the ever popular cakes which were made and/or iced by Lyn Betts and Charmain Blissner. The 28 June 2016 meeting was held at the usual venue – Headland Golf Club. Welfare: Hans Vervaart has had by-pass surgery and was in the rehabilitation ward at Buderim Hospital. The new Sunshine Coast Police Chaplain, Matt Govan, agreed to be the Chaplain of this Branch and he was recommended for honorary membership of the QRPA. Guest Speaker: Lindia Hicks from RACQ Travel at Maroochydore gave an informative talk to the members

advising the services available and also new apps that are now available for use by RACQ members. The annual and general meetings were held on 26 July 2016. State President Greg Early conducted the election which resulted as follows: President – John Walker, Vice President – John Lewis, Secretary – David Betts, Treasurer – Roly Dargusch and Welfare Officer – Margaret Williams. President John Walker presented Trevor Chalk and Denis Arndt with their National Police Service Medals. He also presented Ken Salmon with his Senior Member’s Certificate. State President Greg Early presented Senior Police Chaplain Matt Gowan with a QRPA Honorary Member Certificate. The 23 August 2016 meeting was held at the usual venue – Headland Golf Club. President John Walker presented John Bosel with his Senior Member Certificate and Dick Mattingly with his Veteran Member Certificate. Due to the Branch’s use of the Club’s public address system affecting other Club patrons at the previous meeting, it was resolved to purchase a suitable system for use at future meetings. Lyle Crompton and Clarrie Blissner gave some hints on possible ways to treat prostate cancer by consuming lemons. Next meeting: 27 September 2016.

SOUTHERN DOWNS AND GRANITE BELT:The Branch conducted its annual general meeting at the Southwest TAFE at Warwick on 20 July 2016. This was also the venue for the Branch’s annual luncheon. The election was conducted by Evan Morgan. The meeting on 2 September 2016 was held at the Hidden Creek Vineyard, Winery and Café at Ballendean. The winery is managed by Andy and Leanne Williams who are QRPA members. President

Laurie Bell welcomed everyone and thanked Andy and Leanne Williams for allowing the Branch to hold its meeting there. Good to note that there were no welfare reports. Members have been invited to attend the National Police Remembrance Day service at St Mary’s Catholic Church at Warwick. President Laurie raised for discussion the possibility of changing their meeting days from a Friday to a Saturday to allow members who work during the week time to attend. This matter will be raised again at a later meeting when members have had time to think about the change. On the recommendation of the newsletter editor, John Maher, the name of the newsletter will now be the Southern Downs and Granite Belt Howler. Guest speaker: Andy Williams, who is the wine maker at the Hidden Creek Winery, and those present then adjourned to sample the fine wines. Next meeting: Christmas meeting on 4 November 2016 at the Tenterfield Bowls Club.

Welfare: Kev Cocks’ recovery from knee surgery is still progressing well and Brendan Jones was still receiving treatment for a bladder infection. The Branch met at the Frenchville Sports Club on 3 August 2016. Secretary Dennis Smith advised the meeting that he had received the NPSM which had been awarded posthumously to the late Laurie Meyer and that arrangements were in hand for his widow Gloria to be presented with the medal at the annual dinner in the presence of her family. Welfare: Gloria Meyer advised she had the operation on her eyes for the removal of cataracts and that she still has to have follow-up treatment. Bob Moore advised the reason he was not at the last meeting was because his doctors wanted to make sure his recent prostate operation was successful. He was subjected to a number of tests and examinations and given a clean bill of health. The 7

September 2016 meeting was held at the usual venue - Frenchville Sports Club. Bereavement: Unfortunately life member Max Watson passed away on 12 August 2016 at the age of 98. Guest Speaker: Doctor Ken O’Brien and his lovely lady, Julie, attended as guests. Doctor Ken specialises in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders and spoke to the meeting regarding his experiences with military and police personnel in the Rockhampton area. A BBQ ‘at the beach’ will be held on 18 September where Cavill and Gloria Heywood will attend to the catering. Welfare: President Barry Self and Treasurer Carolyn Tomlin advised they have recently visited Bundaberg member Bob Hayes who at the time of the meeting was in the Bundaberg Mater Hospital. Bob has had long term on going health issues. Next meeting: 5 October 2016.

TOWNSVILLE:The 6 July meeting started a little late as the “rev heads” wanted to watch the parade of transport vehicles from the Townsville 400 race go past. They were very pleased to welcome to the 6 July 2016 meeting Commissioner Ian and Mrs Carol Stewart, Northern Regional Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor, Townsville District Officer Superintendent Glenn Kachel and Northern Region Police Chaplain Rev. Horst Sauer. Commissioner Stewart addressed the meeting. He thanked everyone for getting together at QRPA meetings and keeping the police family together. At the AGM held that day the election resulted as follows: President - Trevor Errington, Secretary - John Urquhart, Treasurer - John Cran, Social

Secretary - Mick Gerrard, Providore - Stan Goffin, Welfare Officers - Gordon Thomas and Ian Palin and Raffle Co-ordinator - Wendy Thomas. The 3 August 2016 meeting was held at the Townsville RSL Club. Welfare: Welfare Officer Gordon Thomas informed the meeting Eileen Kassulke has had cataracts removed from both eyes, that Norma Palin was home recovering from her major surgery and is slowly improving and that he had visited both Rowlie Close and Col Holt. Brian Hooper is slowly improving but still has a lot of Doctors appointments. Guest speaker: The Inspector in charge of Operations Northern Region and the Townsville Rapid Action Patrol, Inspector Joe Kitching, addressed the meeting. He explained that this was a pro-active patrol and was not tasked for general jobs. They use police intelligence to target known offenders and use a computer generated program which predicts where crime is going to occur. Last meeting: 7 September 2016. President Trevor Errington welcomed all in attendance and gave a special welcome to recently retired Senior Police Liaison Officer Linda Janetzki and Lou Hartwig from the Near North Coast Branch. (Later in the meeting Linda’s application to join the Association was recommended). The Welfare Officer Gordon Thomas informed the meeting Norma Palin continues to improve but still requires to have her food vitamised, Col Holt is having chemotherapy each Wednesday and is having difficulties breathing. Brian Hooper is slowly improving but still has a lot of doctors appointments. The Closes are travelling fairly well. Next meeting: 5 October 2016.

MACKAY-WHITSUNDAY:The Branch met at Souths Suburban Bowls Club on 18 June 2016. The Constable Induction Ceremony held in Townsville on the 17th June was attended by Les Campbell, his daughter Lee, Michelle Sheehan and Denise and Dennis Hansen. On the return trip Michelle called in to see Lofty Wesener at the Proserpine Nursing Home. The annual and general meetings were held on 16 July 2016 at Souths Suburban Bowls Club. The 20 August 2016 meeting was held at Brisk Bay near Bowen at the residence of Ernie Hockings and Debbie Hillier. A special welcome was given to visitors Gordon Duncan, Townsville members Barry and Terry Lewthwaite and Jenny and John Urquhart (Townsville Branch Secretary). Special condolences were extended to Col and Lorraine Duncan regarding the passing of their son Colin. On 8 August Kev Wall, Bev Houley (on behalf of the late Max Houley) and Dennis Hansen received the National Police Service Medal from Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson at the QPS function in Mackay. Lively discussion ensued about care and welfare for retired police officers who may have symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. Kussrow accepted the vacant position of Social Director.The 17 September 2016 meeting: Welfare: Margie Kussrow advised that Dave Gray had undergone surgery on his right shoulder and that everything was progressing well. General Discussion ensued with reference to recent media reports on the problems being encountered by retired police in accessing suitable assistance as is presently being provided for Defence Force personnel. Guest speaker: Donna Contor, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Organ and Tissue Donation, Mackay Base Hospital, gave a very enlightening talk on her area of expertise. Annual luncheon on 14 October and next meeting on 19 November 2016 at Souths Suburban Bowls Club.

IPSWICH:The annual and general meetings were held on 13 July 2016 at Brothers Leagues Club, Raceview. The election was conducted by former President Ken Morris with the following result: President – John McCrea, Vice President – John Behm, Secretary-Treasurer – Ken Martin, Welfare Officer – John Hawkins, Assistant Welfare Officer – Joe Moskwa, Newsletter Editor – John McCrae and Raffle Co-ordinators – Matt and Elaine Dale. It was resolved to hold their meetings next year on the second Thursday of the month. Guest speaker: Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon who delivered a most informative presentation on the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe. At the 10 August 2016 meeting a special welcome was extended to Inspector Keith McDonald who later presented the National Police Service Medal to member Denise King in the presence of her daughter Kirsty. Gladys Waters was also welcomed. She is the mother of member and former Inspector Maxine Renouf and the wife of the late Len Waters (1924-1993). Len Waters was the only Aboriginal Fighter Pilot (RAAF) during World War 2. The plane in which Len flew over 95 sorties was a Kittyhawk named Black Magic by a previous pilot. Len thought it was an omen to be assigned the plane and he kept the name. In May this year the RAAF invited Gladys and family members to Amberley RAAF Base to view the FA18 Worimi Hornet honouring Warrant Officer Leonard

Victor Waters (1942-1946). The artwork on the Worimi Hornet honours Len’s Aboriginal heritage and his contribution to the Australian Military Services. Gladys, a former employee of the QPF at Inala, proudly displayed photographs of the event at Amberley. Welfare: Elaine Dale is recovering at home following a second hip operation. Merle Wallace is recovering in the Wesley Hospital after a fall in which she fractured her hip. Greg Polzin reported that he is undergoing treatment for an ongoing health issue. Beverly Lobwein is to undergo further surgery. Guest Speaker: Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Naomi Cornish from Task Force ARGOS. Naomi gave a precise and educational overview of the challenges faced by police in child security and welfare. The 14 September 2016 was chaired by past President Ken Morris. Welfare: Doreen Edwards was hospitalised recently with vertigo – now home and recovering; Fred Maynard recovered from a recent chest infection. Noelene Ladlay was suffering from shingles. Pat Priddle has her home up for sale and is possibly moving back to the Redland Bay area. She has recently undergone minor surgery. Ron Lobwein and Russell Ladlay were presented with their Veteran Certificate by acting Chairman Ken Morris. Guest speaker: Acting Inspector Steve Batterham from the Commonwealth Games Group provided an extremely interesting overview of the logistics and manning issues involved in the planning and running of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Next meeting: 12 October 2016.

GLADSTONE: The Branch met at the Gladstone Golf Club on 6 July 2016. Office Bearers elected for the 2016/2017 year are: President - Darryl Saw, Senior Vice President - Doug Jones, Junior Vice President - Neil Coleborn, Treasurer - Gordon Jones and Welfare Officer - Keith McCann. Invited guest, Travel Consultant Ray Lewis of DeparturePoint, Gladstone, which was the major sponsor of the lucky door prize for Gladstone Branch’s annual luncheon held on 23 July 2016. Raffle proceeds of $600 went to the Queensland Police Legacy Scheme. The Gladstone Police Station was the venue for the Branch’s 3 August 2016 meeting. Welfare: Glenn Josefski was

receiving ongoing immune therapy treatment and was doing very well. At the awards ceremony at the Gladstone Station on 9 August 2016 the following received from Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson their National Police Service Medals: Neil Coleborn, Darryl Saw, Debra Fletcher, Leon McKenzie and Rodney Glindon. Members met at Spinnaker Park on 7 September 2016. Due to a work commitment, new Secretary Debra Fletcher was unable to attend the meeting. Welfare Officer Keith McCann advised that all is well with Ross Vidler following his recent prostate cancer operation. Val Caterson’s condition is pretty much the same as last time. Keith advised that he had telephoned Keith Allan whose health is not good. Chris Lette and Stan Janas advised members that they had carried out maintenance to Sergeant Dan Stiller’s memorial cross and site on the Bruce Highway, north of Farmer Creek, Mount Larcom. (Sergeant Dan Stiller was killed on duty while performing a wide load escort on 1st December 2010). The next meeting will be held at the Tannum Sands Hotel on Wednesday 5th October 2016 at 11.00am.

DARLING DOWNS: The Branch met at the Stock Exchange Hotel on 9 June 2016. John Sullivan was presented with his Veteran Certificate by President Boyd Wilson. Much discussion ensued about the possibility of subsidising the purchase of memorial wall plaques by relatives of former members. Discussion also ensued on an honour board or boards and Bob Lehfeldt offered to manufacture them at no cost to the Branch. The annual and general meetings were held at the West Toowoomba Bowls Club on 14 July 2016. The election resulted as follows: President – Boyd Wilson, Senior Vice President - Mike Jordan, Junior Vice President – Neil Hooper and Secretary-Treasurer – Roger Deshon. Welfare: Len Penrose suffered a slight stroke and was doing quite well with no apparent effect to his limbs. Bob Beckman mentioned that he is coping better some days than others and Neil Hooper mentioned that he will be requiring a knee replacement in due course. Bowls Club. President Boyd Wilson mentioned that he, his wife Glenda and Rod Millward had attended the Southern Downs and Granite Belt luncheon held at the Warwick TAFE College. Welfare: Mention was made of Kev Weise getting about reasonably well following his surgery. John Keightley had gone home after being in hospital but had to return due to a relapse. The 8 September 2016 meeting was held at the Stock Exchange Hotel, Toowoomba. Kev Weise spoke of his general health and his hip injury. Bob Scarff spoke about the annual luncheon to be held on 26 October 2016 at the Toowoomba TAFE College. The Memorial Wall ceremony went off well. Appreciation has been shown to the Toowoomba Regional Council for the loan of thirty chairs and a public address system. Next meeting: 13 October 2016 at West Toowoomba Bowls Club.

NEAR NORTH COAST: The Caboolture Sports Club was the venue for the 20 June 2016 meeting. Senior Vice President Des Kelly chaired the meeting in the absence of President Allan Hawkins who was in hospital at the time. (Allan had a knee replacement operation). The AGM and general meeting were held at the Bribie Island RSL Club on 18 July 2016. Noel Fortescue conducted the election which resulted as follows: President – Allan Hawkins, Senior Vice President – Des Kelly, Junior Vice President – Gerry Morgan. Secretary-Treasurer – Rick Losberg, Noel Fortescue and Peter Gibson declined nominations for family/travel reasons. President Allan declared

that the position would remain vacant until such time as someone was elected to fill it. However, Rick Losberg, the outgoing Secretary-Treasurer, indicated that he would remain in the position until it was filled. No meeting was held in August because of the annual luncheon being held on 16 August 2016 at the Centenary Lakes Function Centre, Caboolture. Over seventy persons attended the luncheon. Redlands, Darling Downs, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Branches were represented. Superintendent Mick Brady of the Moreton Police District also addressed the luncheon. He gave some interesting statistics about the demands of policing in the area, what is planned for a new Caboolture Police Station. A big thank you was extended to Helen Guy who as usual did an excellent job organising the raffle. A thank you was also extended to her helpers: Lou Hartwig, Noel Fortescue, Bluey O’Gorman, Des Kelly and Gerry Morgan. A special big thank was extended to those branch members and local businesses who generously donated prizes for their raffle which consisted of 98 prizes. Next meeting: 19 September 2016 at Caboolture Sports Club.

REDLANDS: The 28 June 2016 meeting was held at the usual venue – the Redlands Sporting Club. Acting Inspector Mark Norrish presented Ron Ehlers with his National Police Service Medal while Senior Constable Matthew Mitchelson presented his grandfather, Elton Mitchelson, with his NPSM. Welfare: Merv Collins recently underwent hip surgery. The annual and general meetings were held on 26 July 2016. Leigh Gorrie conducted the election

which resulted as follows: President – Paul Fitzpatrick, Vice President – Adrian Hall, Secretary – Sue Luskie, Treasurer – Bernie Coleman, Welfare Officer – Leigh Gorrie, Social Convenor – Rosie Nichol and Raffle Convenor – Doug McKinnon. Interesting to note the membership of this Branch being 74: 10 Veteran, 6 Senior, 33 Ordinary and 25 Associate. Founding President, the late Terry Walker, would be so proud of how the Branch has progressed. The Redlands Christian Reformed Church at Ormiston will be the venue for this year’s police remembrance day service on 29 September 2016. The Redlands Sporting Club was the venue for the 26 July 2016 meeting. Welfare: Phil Walliss reported he is recuperating after open heart surgery and hopes to be well enough to attend a meeting in the near future. A meeting was held with Reverend Jim de Witt of Redlands Christian Reformed Church, Ormiston, as the host for this year’s National Police Remembrance Day Service. President Paul Fitzpatrick has been invited to travel with Suburban Living Magazine to promote National Police Remembrance Day. Gratitude was shown to Paul for promoting National Police Remembrance Day and also Redlands Branch itself. Next Guest speaker: Bonnie Black from Little Miss Organised on 27 September 2016.

period of time. He joined the QPS in a similar role and performed his duties in Brisbane and Cairns. Welfare Officer John Thomson reported that Max Lewis was recovering at home. Gloria Coogan was to undergo a shoulder re-construction at the Cairns Private Hospital while Frank Wagner received a pace maker just prior to the meeting. The annual general meeting and annual luncheon were held at the Pearl Gardens Chinese Restaurant in Cairns on 29 July 2016. There was a good roll up of members and associates. Special guests were Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius, Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Newton, Treasurer of the Townsville Branch John Cran and State President Greg Early who conducted the election which resulted as follows: President – Ian Swan, Vice President – John Hartwell, Secretary-Treasurer – Joe Jackson and Welfare Officer – Jock Macdonald. Eden House, Yungaburra, was the venue for the 26 July 2016 meeting. President Ian Swan welcomed all including new members Judi and Ed Healy. Welfare Officer Jock Macdonald advised he had visited Brian Norris, Joe Glendon, Charlie Chapman, Terry Ryan and Nev Reason during the month. HERVEY BAY:The annual luncheon was held on 21 June 2016 at the Hervey Bay RSL Club. Although only 49 attended this year, a good day was had by all. There was representation from Bundaberg, Gympie, Near North Coast and Redlands Branches. Also in attendance was the Member for Hervey Bay, Ted Sorrensen, and his wife Jenny; State President of the QRPA, Greg Early; Acting Assistant Commissioner of Central Region, Darryl Johnson, and Superintendent of Wide Bay District, Mark Styles. Speeches were given by Greg Early, Ted Sorrensen and Darryl Johnson. Ted Sorrensen, who has been a great supporter of police in his years as a local and state government member, gave an interesting talk on his interaction with police over the years. Darryl talked on the current position regarding policing within the Central Police Region. The AGM and general meeting were held on 19 July 2016. The election resulted as follows: President – Grahame Gronow,

Vice President – Greg Morrow, Secretary – Lindy Smith, Assistant Secretary – Russ Smith, Treasurer – Ian Anderson, Welfare Officers – Bevan and Margaret Bradshaw and Social Secretaries – Greg and Ros Morrow. Welfare: Bruce Frese has not been enjoying good health and has had constant trips to Brisbane to see specialists. Jim Collins also has not been enjoying good health. Chris Barrowcliffe had a surgical wound to her leg not heal and Kev Guteridge had a short stint in hospital with skin problems. It was resolved to donate $400 to the Queensland Police Legacy Scheme. A BBQ was held on 16 August 2016. The next meeting will be held on 20 September 2016.

VAN DIEMEN’S LAND by President/Secretary Andy Beasant: We held our seventh annual general meeting on Saturday 25 June. We held our usual overnight gathering, this time at the Tamar Valley Resort at Grindelwald. The same executive was reappointed. (President/Secretary – Andy Beasant, Vice President – Ian Johnston and Treasurer – Jim Byrne). This ended up a great evening and the dinner was superb. We all gathered for breakfast the next morning. This was another good weekend with friends. It was great to see Jennifer Johnston who is recovering really well from a stroke. Also Dave Fitzgibbon is back on deck after open heart surgery. The Branch met on 14 September 2016 at the Gretna Green Hotel. Among the visitors were David and Gil Fleming and Ross and Lesley Huth. (David is president of the Tasmania Retired Police Association and Ross is a former Senior Sergeant and member from Brisbane). Later in the meeting David addressed those present. He mentioned what is happening with the Tasmania RPA. Members stayed for a great roast lunch and were looked after by hosts Colleen and Phil Sharpe. Next meeting: Bothwell on 27 November 2016.
