Newsletter Issue 15 4/2015Season QUEENSLAND POPS ORCHESTRA It’s been a few months since our last concert and we are excited about our next production. I have been busy, doing guest conducting with the South Brisbane Federal Brass Band, as well as working with and conducting the music students at Moreton Bay College. There are lots of new pieces of information developing with the Pops and we hope you can continue with your support as we reveal some of these exciting developments in coming months. Ticket sales are always an important measure of success and I encourage you to continue to bring your friends along to our concerts and share the news about the Pops. “Come Swing Again” is a follow on from the “Come Swing with Me” concert two years ago. We have new artists and a great new program which is certain to lift your spirits and entertain you at the highest level. All the favourites will be there, including Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald, plus there will be a focus on Duke Ellington. Jazz pianist Joe Chindamo may not be as familiar to you as many other artists, but let me assure you he is one of the finest musicians in the world, and one of the best I have ever worked with. Joe and partner Zoe Black will make their Carnegie Hall debut on Wednesday, 30 September 2015, just one month after Joe performs with the Pops, so you saw it first at QPAC! Joining Joe will be special guest vocalist Deborah O’Toole who made her debut with the Pops earlier this year in “With Honour We Serve”. The wonderful Empire Swing Dancers will again bring the stage to life with their fun and energised performances, and as a special treat the Jazz Music Institute (JMI) - New Orleans Street Band will add a new character to this widely diverse program. Don’t miss this one. Our “Celtic Gathering” concert is on just 6 weeks after this next concert so keep that in mind when planning your social calendar. This is going to be such an amazing concert and we are thrilled to advise you that it will also be performed at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba. In the traditions of “Scotland the Brave” Gregory Moore will headline the concert with the wonderful Lisa Lockland- Bell. The Queensland Police Pipes and Drums will be returning with their stirring music and will support the high flying Thistle Highland Dancers . Regular favourite the Watkins Academy of Irish Dance will again bring the power and passions of this much loved dance form to the stage. Special guests will be the Celtic Strings from Mansfield State High School displaying their skills and talents. ….cont’d 29 August QPAC 10 October QPAC 11 October In This Issue Message from Patrick Come Swing Program Win Tickets Contact Us [email protected] Web site: qldpops.com PO Box 128 SHERWOOD QLD 4075 Phone: 07 3278 1913 Tickets: 136 246 2015 Season New Year’s Eve

Program

Program notes:

The JMI Street Jazz Band will be playing in the QPAC Melbourne Green before the performances. The concert will open with a special entry by the JMI New Orleans Street Band playing Bill Baily and moving quickly to a fun swinging version of Waltzing Matilda.

This concert will feature a suite of the music of Duke Ellington. This glorious full orchestral arrangement by Australian jazz legend Graeme Lyall will feature Joe Chindamo on the piano. Joe will also present his new work Cinaed (Celtic for Kenneth) for string orchestra, solo violin, jazz piano and drum kit.

The Big Band will feature in a wonderful selection of Glenn Miller favourites arranged for us by Jon Woodend who you will also be able to see playing saxophone on the night.

The increasingly popular music of Gordon Goodwin as performed by his Big Phat Band will add some great swing music with his Jazz Police.

Deborah O’Toole will join Joe Chidamo and smulch you with the sumptuous I’ve Got A Crush On You, as well as one of the other Ella Fitzgerald hits Deed I Do.

Shout and Feel It and The Fox are two of the great swing tunes that will be played by the Big Band for Empire Swing to strut their stuff with some traditional swing dancing.

Don’t be in doubt, you will entertained at the highest level.
