STATE REPORTS Queensland The August meeting of the Queensland branch had members entertained by Dr Roger Clarkson (Fig. 1) who provided the society with an update on irrigation from both a research and clinical perspective. Dr Clarkson’s focus has been on irrigation and the effects of using dif- ferent chemical preparations. In his research, Dr Clarkson has compared the efficacy of different preparations of sodium hypochlorite. Higher concentrations of sodium hypochlorite provided more rapid tissue dissolution. Lower concentrations of sodium hypochlorite with added surfactant proved to be more effective than Milton. Dr Clarkson noted that formula- tions of sodium hypochlorite with a higher pH were better at dissolving tissue, and preparations at a lower PH had a greater antimicrobial effect. It was quite apparent from the lecture that Milton was a poor performer in comparison with the other products. In the evening, Dr Clarkson covered the potential inter- actions of irrigating liquids with chlorhexidine, and focused on the reaction of sodium hypochlorite with EDTA. The take home message was not to couple EDTA with sodium hypochlorite given the vast reduction of free chlorine available. The half day meeting will be held on October 28th featuring the ‘Master Endodontic Table Clinics’ where a number of interesting topics will be covered. Ian Davies State Correspondent New South Wales The scientific programme for 2011 is coming to a rapid conclusion; our most recent lecture in August was deliv- ered by Professor Mark Schifter: ‘Clinical Review and Update on Biphosphonate Therapy’, where we learnt that despite the possible complications that this therapy does present to the dental profession, we do have a window of opportunity and when explored and utilized to the maximum, we are able to successfully provide suitable treatment for patients undergoing this kind of therapy. Our last meeting, October 28th, is a full day seminar entitled ‘Practical Tips on the Management of Endodontic Patients’. Keynote speakers will be Professor Rick Walton, Dr Chankhrit Sathorn and Dr Alan Nerwich. Our 2012 programme is in its final stages of preparation with the following dates and lectures: 1. 12 February 2012 2. 16 May 2012 3. 15 August 2012 4. 14 November 2012 The first meeting for 2012, 12 February 2012, will be entitled ‘The Past and The Future of Endodontics’, where we will have a stroll down memory lane as a tribute to the last 50 years of endodontics in NSW. The second lecture on the 16th May is titled ‘The Dentine Pulpal Periodon- tium Continuum’ and will be delivered by A/Professor Axel Spahr, a noted periodontist. The third lecture, our Annual Barry Barker Memorial lecture, will be given by Dr Peter Cathro; while the last lecture will be a collaboration of three speakers – Drs Marcus Yan, Tim Castrissos and David Barnard – on ‘Clinical Tips’.
