adventure | HISTORY
Experience living history and feelthe mana (power) when gentlystepping across the long beach alongAnaeho‘omalu Bay. The name isderived from the Hawaiian words anae(mullet) and ho’omalu (to protect),which refer to the ancient fishpondsbehind the beach. The ancientHawaiians were expert aquaculturistsand the fishponds were regularlystocked with coveted mullet, a desiredfood of the Hawaiian ali‘i (royalty).
The Kuualii (southern fishpond) andKahapapa (to the north) are activelymaintained and carefully tended to byohana (family groups), who havepassed down the practice fromgeneration to generation. Informational
signs are posted describing thesignificance of many special areas.
Anaeho‘omalu is fringed byhundreds of graceful swaying palmtrees that face westward towards thecrystal blue waters of the bay. Atdusk, this picturesque scenery slowlyevolves to a series of breathtakingcolors and possibly a green flash.
The beach itself is approximately 900feet long with salt and pepper coloredsand. Though relatively shallow androcky in spots, Anaeho‘omalu deliverswarm inviting waters for reef-protected swimming, snorkeling, diving and windsurfing lessons.
The honu (Hawaiian green seaturtle) can frequently be seen
leisurely swimming in the bay. Besure to keep a careful distance fromthese gentle creatures for they are onthe endangered species list andreceive federal protection.
For history buffs, an archaeologicalexcursion throughout the area willreveal cultural and geographicalremnants of ancient Hawaiiancivilization.
Start out on the Ala Kahakai (trail bythe sea), a 175-mile ancient pathway, part of which runs along the coastlinebehind the Waikoloa Beach Resort. This path once linked communities, temples, fishing areas and otherimportant sites. Also referred to asthe King’s Trail, access to Ala Kahakaican be found at numerous placesalong the bay’s shoreline.
Within the grounds of the WaikoloaBeach Marriott Resort & Spa, discoversome of the finest examples ofpetroglyphs in Hawaii. Thesegraphical stone carvings were a formof communication among ancientHawaiians. It is uncertain about whatthey signified, but some scholarssuggest astronomical symbols, travelmarkers or commemoration of ahistorical event. A marked petroglyphtrail can be found near the mauka(inland) entrance to Kings’ Shops.Complimentary guided tours areprovided 10:30 a.m., Thursday toSunday.
