BY RAIL

The closest station is Thornaby. The University is approximately an 8 minute walk from the train station. Open Day Ambassadors will be on hand to provide assistance at the station.

• East Coast Main Line operate high speed services from London, York and Edinburgh to Darlington, with a connection to Thornaby Railway Station

• Direct services from Manchester Airport, Manchester, Leeds and York run to Thornaby

• A regular service from Saltburn to Newcastle and Bishop Auckland stops at Thornaby and Durham.

BY COACH

Regular services run from Stockton and Middlesbrough to Queen’s Campus and X12 services from Newcastle, Durham, Sedgefield and Middlesbrough stop outside the Holliday Building on University Boulevard.

• Durham Tees Valley Airport is just 8 miles from Stockton • Newcastle Airport is a 50 minute drive away.

TRAVELLING TO THE UNIVERSITY

Queen’s Campus is in Stockton-on-Tees and is located 23 miles south of Durham City. The Campus is linked by the A66 to the A1(M) and the A19. The postcode is TS17 6BH.

BY ROAD

Please use the University car park (marked as a white ‘P’ with a purple background on the map, see page 14).

Please avoid parking outside of designated bays and on roadways. If the Campus car park is full, visitors can park in the overflow car park (marked on the map as a purple ‘P’ with a white background).

From A19 North to Queen’s Campus, Stockton.

• Join the A66, signposted Stockton/Darlington

• Take the first slip road from A66, signposted Teesside Retail Park/Tees Barrage

• Turn right at the traffic lights, over the bridge across the A66, following signs for Tees Barrage

• Turn left at the roundabout.

From A19 South

• Join the slip road for the A66 signposted Stockton/ Darlington

• Keep on the slip road and follow the signs for Tees Barrage as described above.

INFORMATION DESKS

The Information Desks will be staffed throughout the day.

Desks are located in the Sports Centre, Holliday Building and Ebsworth Building.

You do not need to register when you arrive at the Open Day, however you may find it useful to visit the Information Desk during your visit to pick up:

• A copy of the Open Day Guide

• Changes to the schedule, including room changes, cancellations or additional sessions

• Bottled water

• Umbrellas, rain ponchos.

First Aid will be supplied by St John’s Ambulance staff. Should you require first aid assistance please come directly to one of our Information Desks.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND THE CAMPUS

The map within this guide and signage around the Campus will help you to navigate your way around.

Our current students, clearly visible in Durham University Open Day t-shirts, will be working as Open Day Ambassadors. Our Ambassadors are on hand to answer any questions you may have and to talk to you about their Durham student experience.

REFRESHMENTS

Our catering outlets offer a wide variety of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks to keep you refreshed and raring to go.

Save time by pre-booking your lunch. It will cost £4.50 for a packed sandwich lunch if pre-purchased when booking. Exchange your proof of purchase email at the Waterside Restaurant between 11.00am and 2.00pm. Don’t forget to print your confirmation email to provide proof of purchase.

ARRIVAL AND OPEN DAY INFORMATION

INFORMATION ZONE Academic staff and staff from support areas including Disability Support, studying abroad as part of your degree and the Students’ Union will be available in the Information Zone at advertised times throughout the day.

What do you enjoy about studying Pharmacy? When I visited Durham University on the open days I found all of the staff to be very friendly and passionate about their fields of expertise. They were all enthusiastic about sharing information regarding their areas of research with students. Since starting my course I have learnt so many new things, have been on hospital, community and prison placements, have been able to work with cadavers and have taken part in several different practicals a week.

What is the best thing about Queen’s Campus? As Queen’s Campus has only two colleges, you get to know everyone from both colleges really well and there is a nice community atmosphere. There are plenty of opportunities for socialising and making new friends. The colleges also arrange trips and nights out to other parts of the North East such as Yarm, Newcastle and Durham. Everything you may possibly need while at university is within a 20 minute walk: library, lecture halls, labs, shops, hairdressers, restaurants, cinema, nightclubs, gym, river.

What do you do in your spare time? Since starting university I have joined Stephenson College Boat Club and row a few times a week. I am also the elected Social Representative for the Pharmacy Society, which involves organising events for Pharmacy students such as quiz nights, nights out to local venues as well as the Summer and Winter Pharmacy Balls.

AN INTRODUCTION TO OUR COLLEGES

Colleges are far more than a hall of residence. Each has its own identity and traditions, where students can take part in social and sporting activity and mix with a diverse student and academic body.

We guarantee all our first year students college accommodation. This session will introduce you to our collegiate system and explain what it means for our students to become a member of one of our college communities.

Following an introductory talk our current students and staff will lead tours of colleges. This will allow you to fully appreciate how each college delivers the additional support that creates a unique student experience.

DURHAM UNIVERSITY, A PARENTS’ GUIDE

This session will introduce Durham University and cover topics pertinent to parents as they take on a role of supporting young people’s journey to Higher Education. It will also cover how we care for and support our students.

CAREERS, EMPLOYABILITY AND ENTERPRISE

University is about having the time of your life whilst studying a subject you enjoy. It’s also about gaining a qualification that can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career. This presentation will provide information about our recent graduates, the jobs they do, the further study and training opportunities they secure and the ways in which their careers develop.

THE DURHAM STUDENT EXPERIENCE

This is a great opportunity to hear from our current students and to quiz them about their Durham experience.

A small panel of students will be available to answer questions posed by the audience at this session. If you’re unable to attend this session make sure you take the opportunity to speak to one of our Open Day ambassadors who will be supporting academic and college sessions.

DURHAM STUDENTS’ UNION

This talk will showcase how the Students’ Union at Durham supports students across social, academic and welfare areas. Hear more about the many dozens of social clubs and societies, the amazing fundraising activities of DUCK (Durham University Charities Kommittee) and plans for future developments.

PHARMACY – MPHARM TALKThis session will include:

• A welcome talk and introduction to the undergraduate programme• Explanation of the course structure• Entry requirements and possible career paths• Examples of the role of the Pharmacist

Both guests and potential applicants are welcome to attend. If you have an interest in Pharmacy, but are unable to fit one of our talks into your schedule, please contact us in advance or on the day, and we will be happy to arrange to speak with you on an individual basis.

PHARMACY PRACTICALThe MPharm team will be able to provide an insight into the practical experience that students will gain as a key component of the MPharm programme.

Focusing on disease states, and the ways in which a condition can be recognised and treated, the practical sessions will explore through a hands on approach the introduction to the integrated Pharmacy curriculum and style of programme delivery that are key and distinctive features of the Durham MPharm programme.

This session is for prospective students only and will take place in D125 (Ebsworth Building).

PHARMACY PARENT’S/GUARDIAN’S INFORMATION SESSION AND TOUR

This session is for parents/guardians to attend whilst students are taking part in the Pharmacy Practical Activity.

This session will explore parent’s/guardian’s understanding of the pharmacy profession and provide a tour of our facilities.

MEDICINEAn Introduction to Studying Medicine at Durham will be followed by an overview of entry requirements and the application process.

The session will then be led by medical students who will be happy to discuss all aspects of life at Durham University.

MEDICINE PRACTICALStudents will experience several short interactive sessions which reflect how we teach at Durham University.

This will include Body Painting (Hand/Arm/Face) which helps enable students to visualise and learn anatomy. There will also be live ultrasound of blood vessels demonstrating blood flow, the opportunity to learn how to perform an ECG and to meet one of our simulated patients, SimMan.

FOUNDATION CENTRERealising potential and delivering Higher Education without barriers.

Durham University’s Foundation Centre offers specially tailored multidisciplinary study programmes to prepare students for degree level study. The Foundation Centre specialises in helping mature learners return to education, supporting students who are changing between academic fields, and preparing international students who are unable to study to a sufficient level in their own country for direct entry to UK degree programmes. The Foundation Centre is an academic department that delivers courses to develop students’ learning skills and knowledge in preparation for degree level study primarily at Durham University.

BUSINESS, MARKETING, ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE DEGREESYou will be welcomed to Durham University Business School by an Academic Course Leader and our current students. We will talk to you about the structure, flexibility and important characteristics of our ‘research-led’ programmes.

You will learn the importance of our internationally recognised ‘triple accreditation’ and demonstrate what this will mean to you ‘our future student’. You will have the opportunity to quiz our students about their undergraduate life and learn more about us from their perspective. Our session will end with an informal Q&A.

BSC ACCOUNTING (KPMG SCHOOL & COLLEGE LEAVERS)You will be welcomed to Durham University Business School by Dr Amir Michael. We will present the advantages of the collaboration between Durham University Business School, KPMG and ICAEW and its implications on your studies and career. Our session will end with an informal Q&A. Both guests and potential applicants are welcome to attend.

PRIMARY EDUCATIONThis session will outline why teaching is such an important job and how the Primary Education course at Durham addresses the needs of students wishing to become outstanding primary teachers.

The session will demonstrate our Ofsted ranking, the philosophy behind the course and how this makes the course distinctive, and outline other important characteristics of the course, for example our unique partnership model. It will cover what we expect from students who come to Durham, both in terms of the admissions process and also expectations on the course.

PSYCHOLOGY (APPLIED)This session will provide:

An introduction to the collegiate system and to the colleges of Queen’s Campus will be delivered by College Principals and JCR (Junior Common Room) Presidents. This short talk will be followed by tours of college accommodation and facilities and opportunities for informal Q&A with current students and college staff.

Stephenson Central houses our café-bar, shop, games room, TV lounge, IT room, JCR offices and meeting room. Used by Stephenson’s many societies (from drama to games, journalism to international cuisine), it provides the venue for a wide range of activities. There is a weekly programme of events, including film, quiz and pool nights, with themed socials. We also have a dark room for our Photography Society.

Sport is popular at Stephenson College and we have many teams. At the beginning of the year we hold a light-hearted sports day with tug-of-war and sack races. Our students enjoy rowing and canoeing on the nearby River Tees. Stephenson is located next to the Sports Centre and it is easy to join classes and use the fitness suite, studio and other state-of-the-art facilities.

At Stephenson College you can do it if you want to.

QUEEN’S CAMPUS COLLEGESSTEPHENSON COLLEGE

Stephenson is modern, informal and located at the centre of Queen’s Campus, Stockton. It is dynamic and it is growing. We are continually developing innovative new facilities and activities.

The rooms within the college are single, en-suite and arranged in flats of six or seven with shared kitchens.

Livers-in enjoy self-catering but the accommodation charge includes two evening meals a week in the Waterside Restaurant where food is available throughout the day. The Waterside is also the venue for termly ‘Locomotion Dinners’ and other large-scale events.

STEPHENSON HAS MANY ANNUAL EVENTS. WE HAVE A DINNER TO WELCOME

College accommodation is home to 225 of our 1,000 students and is situated a five minute walk away from our Holliday Building College Offices. A major £1 million refurbishment programme has extended our student social space, improved our landscaping and created a new music practice room, a dedicated art room and a games room, adding to the existing facilities of a quiet room, a computer room and the JCR bar and café.

Students dine together twice weekly in the Waterside Restaurant then self-cater, although they can eat in the Waterside or at Café Aroma at other times. This is in addition to our regular formal meals.

Many John Snow students actively participate in College and University sport and benefit from the excellent Queen’s Campus Sports Centre which contains a sports hall, fitness suite and spinning room. Basketball, football, rugby, rowing, hockey and netball feature strongly among our excellent teams.

John Snow College is a vibrant, stimulating college community. Students work hard and play hard and are well supported throughout by committed college staff, JCR officers and college mentors. The atmosphere is a caring and relaxed one where everyone can be assured of a warm welcome and ongoing encouragement.

What do you enjoy about studying Business Finance? For starters, the amazing educational and support staff, whose passion (and patience) have instilled in me a very strong interest in the world of finance. The academic staff have always found extra time to answer my queries about their respective subjects, or even off-topic, such as on UK policies!

What is the best thing about Queen’s Campus? Its very tough to choose just one, as being a part of the Queen’s ‘family’ is a whole different experience on its own. But, from an international student’s perspective, you feel at home. You get to know almost everyone, including the staff. All of these characteristics allow you an amazing social life, but really help you focus on studying as well.

What do you do in your spare time? As a few small examples of the opportunities available here, I represent the International Office at Queen’s Campus, and the International Students Association. I was supported by the college in starting the Stephenson College Squash team; participating in the inter-college league and have worked on local charity projects through the university.

What is the best thing about Queen’s Campus? Our campus has new facilities and a state of art library with new and brilliantly fast computers and ample books to enhance our knowledge. We also have the same networking events as Durham city, which introduces Durham Business School students to top employers.

What do you do in your spare time? I go to the union society debates and meet with friends. I also go to our local gym and enjoy Stockton high street coffee shops.
