Sandra Murray knows – fromher own experience and fromwatching those in teaching andlearning circles – what makes agood educator.

“Although they don’t fit intoone mold, it is evident to me thatthey all love teaching, and deeplycare about their students’ learning.Their passion is infectious, notonly to their students, but to peo-ple like me who get to witness itfrom the sidelines,” she says.

A staff member since 1988, Ms.Murray is the sole remainingmember of the team that foundedthe Instructional DevelopmentCentre, now the Centre for Teach-ing and Learning (CTL), in 1991.She began under the leadership ofChris Knapper, Queen’s professoremeritus in psychology and origi-nal director of the centre, whomentored and taught many oncampus, including Ms. Murray,now program coordinator in theCTL.

“Chris is so special to me, andmany of his students and col-leagues. He saw something in methat I didn’t,” she says. “He’s beenvery influential in my life, like mysecond dad. He helped me believein myself more and made me real-ize what I could accomplish.”

After starting at Queen’s as asecretary in Mining Engineering,Ms. Murray interviewed for a po-sition with Dr. Knapper and heimmediately saw how clearly Ms.Murray understood the ideas be-hind the Instructional Develop-ment Centre.

“I didn’t have the educationalbackground but I understood thejob because I had researched it.The centre was new to Queen’s,and so I had to call the Universityof Waterloo to find out moreabout the field. I was very enthu-siastic in the interview and Chriswas impressed that I took time toresearch the position on myown.”

(Dr. Knapper is widely knownas a pioneer and Canada’s fore-most expert in the area of teachingand learning. Before Queen’s, hefounded the teaching resources of-fice at the University of Waterloo.There are several awards givenannually, at Queen’s and nation-ally, in honour of Dr. Knapper’s

dedication to quality teaching andlearning.)

While Ms. Murray’s role in theCTL has shifted over the years,her main focus at present is toplan and organize, along with ed-ucational developers, the manydifferent programs the centre of-fers, including Teaching Develop-ment Day, the Showcase on Teach-ing and Learning, and a graduatecourse on Teaching and Learningin Higher Education. She is alsobusy booking educators fromaround the world to come into thecentre to facilitate discussions onvarious topics.

“The centre has been my class-room,” says Ms. Murray. “In allmy jobs, I like to connect with

what I’m doing, see the bigger pic-ture, and the CTL has been won-derful for that. I love that the coreof what we do is focused on thestudents and their educational ex-perience at Queen’s. I also like togo to our workshops and events toget a sense of what is happeningacross the university and how toexpand our offerings.”

The centre and its dedicatedpersonnel has been a very uplift-ing place to work for Ms. Murrayand she’s excited about the future,under the leadership of PeterWolf, Associate Vice-Provost andDirector, CTL, and Jill Scott, Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning).

“Everyone is very passionateabout what they do, supportingQueen’s educators,” says Ms.Murray, adding that in manyways, just as Dr. Knapper is like asecond father, the people of theCTL have become her second fam-ily. “The CTL has been a verylarge part of my life, and I’ve re-ceived so much inspiration andsupport from many of my col-leagues who have come throughover the years.”

She’s also thrilled about theCTL’s recent move, from the base-ment of Mackintosh-Corry Hall tothe building’s first floor. The newspace is bright and open-concept,with more spaces for collaborativework.

“It’s like Christmas every day.Teaching and learning has literallycome out of the basement,” shesays, laughing. “It was a nicespace down there, but there wasno light. The light is now pouringin. It filters into everything youdo.”

Honorary degrees recognize vital contributionsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Two new honorary degree re-cipients will be recognized at the2015 fall convocation ceremoniesat Queen’s University. NellieCournoyea is being honoured forhelping stimulate economic, so-cial and cultural development forAboriginal people while RichardBattarbee is an internationalleader in the field of environmen-tal science.

The degrees are awarded tothose who have made remarkablecontributions to the lives of peo-ple throughout the world in aca-demia, business, politics, scienceand the arts.

Nellie Cournoyea, the formerPremier of the Northwest Territo-ries, was born in Aklavik, NWT,in 1940 and was educated

through the Fed-eral Aklavik DaySchool by Al-berta correspon-dence courses.She worked atCBC Inuvik fornine years as anannouncer andstation managerand was a land claim fieldworkerfor the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami(ITK). Ms. Cournoyea was afounding member, and later ad-ministrator and land rightsworker, of the Committee ofOriginal Peoples’ Entitlement(COPE).

Ms. Cournoyea is currently thechair and chief executive officer ofInuvialuit Regional Corporation(IRC). The corporation was estab-lished in 1985 with the mandate toreceive the Inuvialuit lands and

financial compensation resultingfrom the 1984 land claim settle-ment. Today it has assets in excessof $492 million.

Ms. Cournoyea will receive herDoctor of Laws Tuesday, Nov. 17 at2:30 pm in Grant Hall.

Richard William Battarbee isEmeritus Profes-sor of Environ-mental Change atUniversity Col-lege London(UCL) and wasthe director of theEnvironmentalChange ResearchCentre (ECRC) atUCL from 1991 to 2007.

Throughout his career he hasbeen involved in research on theway lake sediment records can beused to reconstruct lake-ecosys-

tem change through time. Withhis colleagues in the ECRC he hassuccessfully applied those tech-niques to problems of surface wa-ter acidification and climatechange. In the 1980s he and hisgroup demonstrated that acidrain was responsible for causingthe acidification of surface watersin the British uplands, researchthat was instrumental in persuad-ing the government of the UnitedKingdom to sign internationalagreements on the reductions ofsulphur dioxide emissions frompower stations.

His research on acid rain hascontinued and now focuses onlake-ecosystem recovery, espe-cially the role of climate change inmodifying recovery processes.

Dr. Battarbee will receive his Doc-tor of Science Tuesday, Nov. 17 at6:30 pm in Grant Hall.

Record six students earn Vanier ScholarshipsBY CHRIS ARMES,COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Six Queen’s University stu-dents have won the 2015 VanierCanada Graduate Scholarship;the most in a single year atQueen’s since the scholarship waslaunched in 2008.The programaims to strengthen Canada's abil-ity to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and estab-lish Canada as a global centre ofexcellence in research and higherlearning.

“Our six new Vanier Scholarsexemplify academic achievement,leadership and extraordinary re-search potential,” says BrendaBrouwer, Vice-Provost and Deanof the School of Graduate Stud-ies. “These talented scholars willnot only contribute to the re-search excellence at Queen’s butalso serve as role models andmentors to our research trainees.Congratulations to all winners ontheir success and best wishes asthey focus on research and dis-covery.”

Hannah Dies (Chemical Engi-neering) – A PhD candidate inBiomedical Engineering, Ms.Dies’ doctoral research centres oncreating a portable sensor thatmay be used to detect pathogenicbiomolecules indicative of vari-ous types of cancers and bacterialdiseases. Portable biosensors mayhave the ability to make medicaldiagnoses quickly and efficientlyin remote locations without ac-cess to laboratory facilities.

James Gardner Gregory (Neu-roscience) – Mr. Gregory’s re-

search studies the neurophysiol-ogy of feeding. Gonadal hor-mones, such as androgens and es-trogens, have been found to be anessential component for deter-mining the motivation behindfood consumption. Although hor-monal manipulations are fre-quently observed to alter foodconsumption, the exact mecha-nism behind the potent effect ofandrogens and estrogens on feed-

ing behaviours is relatively un-known.

Catherine Normandeau (Neu-roscience) – Ms. Normandeau’sresearch aims to identify the cel-lular changes responsible for thetransition from adaptive to mal-adaptive anxiety. She has focusedon a molecule called neurotensin,a peptide found in the brain thathas been previously investigatedas a possible treatment for schizo-

phrenia. In previous studies,blocking neurotensin has led to asignificant reduction in patholog-ical anxiety. Since anxiety anddepression so often occur to-gether, this research also exploreswhether neurotensin might be in-volved in depression.

Erica Phipps (Kinesiology) –Ms. Phipps’ doctoral research as aVanier Scholar will focus on envi-ronmental influences on health.

She aims to expand upon her pre-vious work as executive directorof the Canadian Partnership forChildren’s Health and Environ-ment and the work of environ-mental health equity advocatesacross the country. Ms. Phippssees her doctoral research as thechance to apply a “structured anmethodological way of learning”to issues that she has already en-countered in the field.

Amanda Shamblaw (Psychol-ogy) – Ms. Shamblaw’s researchinterest focuses on the intergenerational transmission of depres-sion. She examines how physicaltouch, vocal characteristics, andtalking about the minds of otherscontribute to this relationship.For her doctoral research, set tostart in the fall, she will extendher research to focus on infants,in particular how postpartum de-pression affects infant attachmentthrough both reciprocal attach-ment and infant neurological fac-tors.

Ognen Vangelov (PoliticalStudies) – Mr. Vangelov’s doctoralresearch focuses on the problemof “un-democratization.” In hisown words, un-democratizationis the current process of demo-cratic regression, and he intendsto take a closer look at the phe-nomenon using Hungary andMacedonia as examples.

Researchers land Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Nathan Andrews (PoliticalStudies) and Scott Thompson (So-ciology) have been named recipi-ents of the Government ofCanada’s Banting PostdoctoralFellowships.

Dr. Andrews is joiningQueen’s after completing his PhDat the University of Alberta. Hisresearch seeks to ask whetherGhana’s oil development has thepotential to alleviate levels ofpoverty or risks falling victim tothe “resource curse” – a paradox-ical trend in economics that

shows countries with an abun-dance of natural resources,specifically non-renewable re-sources, tend to have lower levelsof economic growth and worsedevelopment outcomes thanthose with fewer natural re-sources.

“I am very privileged to belisted as a Banting fellow thisyear, among a group of emergingscholars,” says Dr. Andrews.“The Banting fellowship is goingto give me peace of mind in termsof financial security as I investi-gate the impact of oil and gas ex-traction on local communities inthe context of Ghana. As a step-ping-stone to a promising futureresearch career, this funding willenable me to stay active in thebroader field of the internationalpolitical economy of natural re-sources in Africa.”

Dr. Thompson was a post-doc-

toral fellow at the SurveillanceStudies Centre under Dr. DavidLyon (Sociology) prior to beingawarded the Banting Fellowship.His research is focused on exam-ining the historic use of surveil-lance technologies by the Govern-ment of Canada to impose thecategory of ‘Indian’ on First Na-tions, Inuit and Métis peoples.This work will help to better un-derstand how this category cameto construct a single cultural un-derstanding for a diverse groupof peoples and cultures, imposedan identity onto them. Dr.Thompson will also investigatewhat can be done to address thenegative cultural stereotypes thatcontinue as the legacy of theseprograms.

"The Banting Postdoctoral Fel-lowship has given me the oppor-tunity to add my own voice to theincredibly important and ground-

breaking research being done bythe Surveillance Studies Centrehere at Queen's University,” saysDr. Thompson. “ I am very ex-cited to bring my own researchregarding the historical surveil-lance of the First Nations, Métisand Inuit to these discussions,and work with members of thecommunity to seek out means ofdispelling some of the hurtfulstereotypes regarding these peo-ples."

The Banting Postdoctoral Fel-lowship Program is administeredby the Canadian Institutes ofHealth Research, the Natural Sci-ences and Engineering ResearchCouncil of Canada, and the SocialSciences and Humanities Re-search Council of Canada. It aimsto attract and retain top-tier post-doctoral talent and position themfor success as research leaders oftomorrow.

In Memoriam: Ronald Lampman Watts, C.C.Ronald L. Watts, the 15thPrincipal of Queen’s, diedOct. 9. He was 86.

Dr. Ronald Watts was bornMarch 10, 1929 in Karuizawa,Japan, to Canadian Anglican mis-sionary parents. He commencedhis education in that country, sub-sequently moving to Trinity Col-lege School in Port Hope and thenTrinity College at the Universityof Toronto. Receiving a RhodesScholarship in 1952, he continuedhis studies at Oriel and NuffieldColleges at Oxford University,from which he received a BA(1954) and a DPhil (1963) in Politi-cal Studies. He and Donna Paisley

married in 1954, establishing alifelong partnership that sus-tained their extensive educational,scholarly and policy-oriented ac-tivities.

Dr. Watts’s career at Queen’sUniversity began in 1955, when hebecame a faculty member in theDepartment of Philosophy, mov-ing six years later to Political Stud-ies. Shortly thereafter, he becamefirst an assistant dean and thendean of the Faculty of Arts andScience, and then, from 1974 to1984, principal and vice-chancellor.

While in Political Studies, hepioneered the study of British Do-minions and emerged as a leadinginternational scholar of federal-ism, playing decisive roles

throughout the world in organiza-tions concerned with intergovern-mental relations.

In 1989, he assumed the direc-torship of the Queen’s Institute ofIntergovernmental Relations, and,as a fellow, was continuously in-volved with the institute until hisdeath. His expertise was enlistedat the highest levels by Canadianfederal and provincial govern-ments, and by a multiplicity ofcountries, including Nigeria,Kenya, Uganda, Papua NewGuinea, the Solomon Islands,South Africa, Yugoslavia, Pakistanand India.

He had a lifelong interest inand an encyclopaedic knowledgeof aviation and aviation history.

Dr. Watts, a long-time member ofthe Kingston Yacht Club, was afiercely competitive sailor whocompeted with considerable suc-cess at national and internationallevels. He owned and carefullytended several boats during hissailing career, including Viking 1 &2, Blue Peters, Cats Wiskers andZest.

A prolific and respectedscholar, his immense contribu-tions both to academe and societyat large were recognized with fivehonorary degrees, his appoint-ment as an Officer of the Order ofCanada in 1979, and his promotionto Companion in 2000, and withhis fellowship in the Royal Societyof Canada.

Dr. Watts is survived by hisloving wife Donna (nee Paisley),brother Hugh (Sharon), sistersBarbara Sibbald (John), MargaretWebb (Stephen), brother-in-lawHugh (Joan) and sisters-in-law Ar-den Collins (Alex), Judith Paisleyand Carol Paisley. He will bemissed by many nieces, nephews,grandnieces and grandnephews.He is predeceased by his parents,Bishop Horace and Ruth Watts,sister Alison Watts, and brothers-in-law Ian and Keith Paisley.

As expressions of sympathy,donations to the J.A. Corry Memo-rial Fund (Intergovernmental Re-lations) at Queen’s University inmemory of Dr. Watts would be ap-preciated by the family.

Queen’s leads in student satisfactionBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Queen’s leads in student satis-faction among Canada’s medical-doctoral universities according toMaclean’s 2016 university rank-ings, while holding its fourth-place overall position within thecategory.

Results from a student satisfac-tion survey are a new part of theMaclean’s rankings this year.Queen’s ranked among the topthree in all of the survey’s cate-gories, including satisfaction withcourse instructors, extracurricularactivities, mental health services,and residence living, as well asadministrative and student lifestaff.

“The results in Maclean’s speakto the high quality of a Queen’seducation and the excellence ofour students, faculty and staff,”says Daniel Woolf, Principal andVice-Chancellor. “Queen’s is very

pleased to receive top marks forstudent satisfaction, which reflectsthe high priority the universityplaces on providing a transforma-tive student learning experiencewithin a supportive and inclusivecampus environment.”

The Maclean’s rankings high-lighted the accomplishments ofQueen’s faculty, as the universityplaced second in the country forthe number of faculty membersreceiving national awards.

The results also reflect thehigh quality of Queen’s students,as the university continues tohave one of the highest enteringaverages in Canada, while lead-ing all universities in the countryin undergraduate student reten-tion from first to second year, aswell as for the proportion of un-dergraduate students who gradu-ate. In addition, Queen’s placedsecond out of all Canadian uni-versities for the proportion of its

operating budget dedicated toproviding financial support forstudents.

“Queen’s is incredibly proud ofthe accomplishments of its stu-dents, both before and after grad-uation, and we are pleased to offera wide range of support servicesto help ensure their success,” saysPrincipal Woolf. “The university isalso proud to be able to offer a sig-nificant amount of financial assis-tance, thanks in large measure tothe generosity of our alumni andbenefactors.”

A Queen’s education continuesto be well respected, with the uni-versity placing in the top 10 inCanada in all categories of thereputational ranking. The univer-sity maintains its appeal to stu-dents across the country, withMaclean’s reporting that Queen’sattracts more students from out ofprovince than any other univer-sity in Ontario.

Queen’s remained in fourth place overall among Canada’s medical-doctoraluniversities and leads in student satisfaction according to the Maclean’s 2016university rankings.

On mentoring and fieldworkThe following column first ran on the ‘Dis-

As field biologists we know we are ex-tremely privileged to do what we do. Weget to explore some of the most remoteplaces in the world, study some of the mostexciting flora and fauna, and experiencesome of the most exciting, hilarious and ter-rifying things you could ever imagine. Butwe don’t want to keep these experiences toourselves. That’s exactly why we startedthis blog, to share our stories and others’stories with everyone.

I’ve been working in the field since 2009and I’ve had the opportunity to work witha lot of field assistants over that time. Lack-eys, minions, call them what you want, butthey’re certainly more than just hired help.For most of my field assistants, fieldwork inour lab was a first for them, and I wanted tomake that the best possible experience.

Thinking back to my first field season insummer 2009, I was terrified. I was alwaysan outdoorsy person but was still pretty in-timidated. The field technician that year,my now good friend Sarah, played a hugerole in getting me excited about fieldwork.Her enthusiasm for the natural world wasexceptional. I remember meanderingthrough some of the paths surrounding theQueen’s University Biological Station andlooking at spring ephemerals. Every timewe came across a species she didn’t knowshe helped us key it out, and it was superexciting to turn the pages and eventually amatching image would jump right off the

page. Sarah was a pretty special mentor tome, and that field season literally changedmy whole career path and a lot of my life.

Having Sarah as a guide in my first fieldseason really set the pace for my future fieldseasons as a graduate student. As I grewinto my role as a field biologist, I realizedmy role as a mentor, and fast. Suddenly, Ihad my own students to help with my ownprojects. I had to give advice and help set uptheir honours thesis projects. I had to showthem how to identify local flora and famil-iarize them with our sampling techniquesand, most importantly, I had to get them ex-cited about doing it. I had to get them to ap-preciate the natural world and give themtheir first taste of fieldwork.

For me, it was really exciting to see whowas going to end up loving fieldwork andwho would stay indoors for the rest of theirlives. Over the years I would certainly sayI’ve seen a handful of the latter, but for themost part fieldwork was a positive experi-ence. For example, I had two field assistantslast summer both of whom had a great timedoing fieldwork.

Jen, who did an Honours thesis projecton masting in sugar maples, is now doingfieldwork in Alaska. Jen, a self-describedtree-hugger, was meant to do fieldwork.She had spent some time doing fieldworkin New Zealand and was just an outdoorsyperson in general. I remember working inthe field with her one day and talking abouthow much we loved to work in the field. “Itmakes you feel alive,” Jen commented. Sheis certainly right about that!

My other field assistant John follows asimilar storyline. John was an outdoorsyguy with experience working for a conser-vation authority. He came into our lab,bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and excited todo fieldwork. I remember interviewing him

and thinking there was no way he couldstill be that enthusiastic by the end of thesummer. But John proved me wrong. Infact, he’s starting his Master’s this semesterin our lab and doing a totally fieldwork-based thesis.

Like I said before, fieldwork isn’t meantfor everyone, but you don’t know if you en-

joy something until you try it. Mentoringstudents and getting them excited aboutfieldwork stands as one of my favouriteparts, if not my absolute favourite part, ofbeing a field biologist.

Vibrant and inclusive, a com-passionate and loving spirit, MaryBalanchuk touched many livesduring her time at Queen’s.

Born Sept. 15, 1925 in ThunderBay, where she would grow upand graduate from Fort WilliamCollegiate Institute, Mary cele-brated her 90th birthday sur-rounded by friends and familyjust two weeks before her passing.

Mary first arrived at Queen’s as

a student and graduated in 1949with an arts degree (later complet-ing her Master of Education fromthe University of Toronto). Fol-lowing a successful career as ahigh school guidance counsellor,where she positively influenced ageneration of students, Mary re-turned to Queen’s in 1968 as an as-sociate professor at the newly-es-tablished Faculty of Education.

She would leave her mark atQueen’s University, both duringher career and after retiring, byher ongoing commitment to gen-der equity, student success, theguidance counselling profession,and collegial connectedness.

Mary is a former member ofthe Queen’s Board of Trustees and

a recipient of the DistinguishedService Award in 1994. She alsowas a member of UniversityCouncil and Senate.

Mary was an active member,supporter and president (1998-2001) of the Queen’s Women’s As-sociation (formerly the FacultyWomen’s Club) for many years.

She wrote a detailed history ofthe Faculty Women’s Club from itsinception in 1939, including its in-volvement with troops and de-tainees during the Second WorldWar, and the club’s subsequentgrowth.

In December 2005, Mary estab-lished the Mary L. BalanchukConcurrent Education Award tohelp support an incoming student

to Concurrent Education programfrom northern Ontario.

Always an inclusive person andnetworker, Mary never recognizedobstacles because, to her, chal-lenges were always opportunities.

She is predeceased by her par-ents Sydor and Anna Balanchuk,brothers John and Michael Bal-anchuk. She is survived by herloving sister Stephanie Patterson.She will be dearly missed by herextended family and friends. As a Concurrent Education andGeography student at Queen’s,Jessica Finlay,(Artsci’10,BEd’11) discov-ered her passionfor research, ed-ucation and out-reach. Todayshe is combin-ing all three in aunique post-graduate projectas a doctoral candidate in geogra-phy and gerontology at the Uni-versity of Minnesota. Jessica’s re-search examines the barriers facedby seniors who want to stay in

their own homes, and seeks solu-tions to these challenges as well asstrategies for lifetime communi-ties.

“I’m really excited to pursuethis research,” says Ms. Finlay. “Inthe past we routinely put seniorsinto nursing homes with assistedliving care, sometimes pushingthem to the margins of society.However, older people generallyprefer to stay in their homes andtend to do better there.” Issuesaround services, autonomy andsafety, as well as the risk of socialisolation present barriers to mak-ing this happen, she notes.

With support from the AlfredBader Scholarship in Memory ofJean Royce, Ms. Finlay is conduct-

ing in-depth interviews of agingresidents in three diverse areas ofMinneapolis. Her work identifieshow older residents perceive andreact to the local built environ-ment, such as the availability ofservices, in-home and neighbor-hood safety, and access to parksand other public amenities. Shealso focuses on interconnectedpersonal factors such as healthand self-ascribed identity, as wellas demographic factors includingrace, gender and class. In the nextphase she will interview urbanplanning, health department andcommunity services staff regard-ing policies and actions that ad-dress aging demographics.

The goal of Ms. Finlay’s re-search is to identify a range oftools that will better tailor environ-ments for the diversity of life expe-riences, preferences, independencelevels and service needs of agingresidents. She will compare thetraditional spatial analysis ofneighbourhoods, as done by geog-raphers and urban planners, withmuch more personal, in-depth re-ports from the perspective of olderpeople who live there.

Although still in the earlystages of interviewing, Ms. Finlayis seeing an overall lack of proac-tive planning on the part of sen-

iors, families and policymakers. “At the personal level, plan-

ning involves difficult conversa-tions between seniors and theirsupport networks regarding therealities of growing old,” shenotes.

For example, a multi-storyhome with bedrooms on the sec-ond floor, limited handrails, andintensive year-round yard-workare increasingly difficult to man-age and potentially hazardous formany older residents. A fall, oftencausing a broken a hip, may forcethem to leave their home unpre-pared.

At the broader policy level, in-vestment in lifelong communityplanning and development isneeded, Jessica suggests. Throughher research she hopes to chal-lenge assumptions of urban living(such as youthful, able-bodied,and able-minded residents) thatcreate barriers for older residents.

“Volunteering with diversecommunities, first at Queen’s, andnow in Minnesota, sparked myconcern initially that our residen-tial environments do not supportan acceptable level of health andquality of life for many older resi-dents,” says Ms. Finlay, whoselong-term goal is to advancestrategies for healthy and inclu-

sive lifelong communities througha career in academia.

“It’s exciting now to finallytranslate my ideas into action,”she says.

Homecoming 2015 has come and gone and despite the cold, wet weather, thousands of alumni returned to Queen’sUniversity for the weekend to foster friendships and create new connections. The “Oil Thigh” was surelysung numerous times duringHomecoming weekend, but onlyonce did proud alumni have or-chestral accompaniment.

John Burge, a professor in theSchool of Drama and Music anda Juno Award-winning composer,has created an orchestralarrangement of the “Oil Thigh.”The Queen’s Symphony Orches-tra debuted the piece on Friday,Oct. 23 during the School ofDrama and Music’s Homecomingshowcase concert at the IsabelBader Centre for the PerformingArts.

“The idea was to give the songa rather obvious orchestrated cli-max,” says Dr. Burge, a JunoAward-winning composer whohas taught at Queen’s for nearly30 years. “After a big introduc-tion, the first verse is sung withjust some of the orchestra play-

ing. For the second verse, I add afew more instruments, and thenthe entire orchestra joins in thefinal verse and it gets rather hugeat the end. There are interludesbetween the sung verses thatmodulate to different keys mak-

ing the middle verse a bit lowerto sing and the final chorushigher and with a more tri-umphant flavour.”

The idea of an orchestralarrangement of the “Oil Thigh”came up back in May as a unique

addition to the Homecomingshowcase concert. Dr. Burge vol-unteered, coming up with a threeand a half minute version thatnow includes an introduction, in-terludes and a coda in additionto the traditional three verses. Ashe sat down to write the arrange-ment in the summer, Dr. Burgeset out to add something originalto this ubiquitous ditty.

“The actual tune is often re-ferred to as ‘The Battle Hymn ofthe Republic’ and it is one ofthose annoying earworms. Onceyou sing it a few times, it’s reallyhard to get it out of your sys-tem,” he says. “I didn’t want toset it so that people could singalong when they had accompani-ment because that’s in fact whatthe Queen’s Bands already does.So I came up with a couple of ad-ditional ideas to give the accom-paniment more resonance andthere is a big build up beforeeach verse is sung so you reallyknow when the ‘Oil Thigh’ is

coming.”Dr. Burge dedicated the

arrangement to Daniel Woolf as asmall way of acknowledging theaccomplishments of the currentprincipal and vice-chancellorover the past six years.

“I just felt that as he movesinto his second term, he shouldbe really proud of where thingsare with Queen’s,” he says. “Withthe recent announcement of the$50 million endowment for theSmith School of Business and theNobel Prize in Physics for ArtMcDonald, it’s just a great timeto be at Queen’s.”

Dr. Burge anticipates theQueen’s Symphony Orchestrawill play his arrangement of the"Oil Thigh" at future Homecom-ing showcases and possibly atformal events like installations.The new arrangement might alsobe included in events planned bythe School of Drama and Musicto mark Queen’s 175th anniver-sary.

Making the switch to univer-sity life can be difficult and is onlycompounded when you are alsotrying to find your way in a newcommunity and culture.

These are the challenges formany international students.However, with the support of anumber of programs offered byQueen’s University and theQueen’s School of English (QSoE),that transition is being made eas-ier.

One such program is QBridge,which acts as a pathway or abridge to undergraduate studiesand delivers academic Englishlanguage training to internationalstudents before they begin theirstudies at Queen’s.

The QBridge Pathway initiallybegan in 2010 as an intensiveeight-week English language sum-mer program for conditionally ac-cepted international students. Thisyear, the QBridge Pathway wasexpanded to include the Englishfor Academic Purposes Program,which allows students with condi-tional acceptance to spend the Falland Winter terms preparing forundergraduate studies. The firstgroup of QBridge students joinedthe English for Academic Pur-poses Program in September 2015and are currently preparing fortheir 2016 Queen’s undergraduate

studies. In the QBridge Accelerated, the

students, who have already beenaccepted to an undergraduateprogram at Queen’s, listen to lec-tures, write essays, make presen-tations and take part in debates.By the program’s end, studentsare meant to be proficient enoughin their academic and languageskills to be able to succeed in theirfirst year of university.

This is not an introductorycourse.

“It’s very intense but to get intothe QBridge Accelerated program

these students have a certain Eng-lish-language proficiency that’shigher than in other programs,”says Rasha Fahim, an ESL instruc-tor at QSoE who is also pursuingher Masters of Education. “Soyou’re dealing with more profi-cient students and they do havethe acceptance into their under-graduate programs so they havethat motivation, they want thoseskills.”

Another aspect of the QBridgePathway is that it helps the stu-dents settle into their new life, notonly in the classrooms and lecture

halls of Queen’s but in Kingstonand Canada as well. While wemay think of the community asbeing a friendly, convenient placefor many new arrivals they are being introduced to a very differentway of life, from cultural norms tsimply getting around the city.

“I think it eases the studentsinto their university life because itakes them a while to get adjusteto Canada, to Kingston, just beingable to take the bus, moving backand forth, getting used to the cul-ture here a little bit,” says Ms.Fahim. “That’s important becausethat is part of their well-beingtoo.”

From a student perspective,Severus (Chongxi) Gao, now inhis first-year of studies at the Fac-ulty of Engineering and AppliedScience, says the program wasvaluable in preparing him for thenext stage.

Initially, he wasn’t all that interested in leaving his home in Shandong, China, early to attendQBridge, he says. However, his father pointed out that it was aboutmore than making the transitionto post-secondary education.

“So I went,” Mr. Gao says.“That was probably the wisest decision I ever made. It helped me lot.”

He says that a key to theQBridge Pathway is that it’s notabout polishing his English skills,but about raising these to an aca-demic level while also learningabout the expectations of a Cana-dian university. Halfway throughhis first semester at Queen’s he isalready putting much of what helearned to work.

“For the QBridge students wehave the ability to write a properlab report to get a good mark. Weknow what to say in reports, weknow what to say in emails, weknow how to use English properlin different situations,” he says.“It’s also about accepting anotherculture, making yourself morecomfortable in it and trying togain something from it. That’swhat QBridge helps us to do.”

Computer Store services transitioning in 2016BY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Several services currently of-fered by the Campus ComputerStore will transition to existingshared services after the storeceases retail operations next year.

The university reviewed theCampus Computer Store and allother ancillary operations on cam-pus during the 2014-15 fiscal year.In light of the growing deficit, thereview recommended closing thestore by April 29, 2016, with retailservices being discontinued andcore services that support the aca-demic and business requirementsof the university transitioning toexisting shared services.

The decision to close the storeis in line with the broader trendacross the province, with only oneuniversity still operating a com-puter store.

“Queen’s is committed to fi-nancial sustainability in order toprotect the university’s overall ac-ademic mission,” says CarolineDavis, Vice-Principal (Finance and

Administration). “Increased exter-nal competition, especially fromonline retailers, coupled withbroader product lines available in-stantly from local retailers chal-lenged the Campus ComputerStore’s business model.

“ITS explored different optionsin recent years to offset decliningsales, but the opportunities couldnot guarantee the long-term finan-cial sustainability of the CampusComputer Store,” Ms. Davis says.

Human Resources (HR) hasmet with the store employees andunion representatives to discussfuture options. HR is offering on-going support to the employeesand has made them aware of newpositions that will be created as aresult of some services transition-ing to existing shared serviceunits.

“We have given serious consid-eration to the impact this decisionwill have on store employees, whoprovide exceptional service to theQueen’s community,” says BoWandschneider, Associate Vice-

Principal (Information TechnologyServices) and Chief InformationOfficer. “As we move forwardwith the transition plan, we willdo our utmost to support the em-ployees.”

Services Transitioning

Departmental IT purchases willtransition directly to Strategic Pro-curement Services (SPS) startingin May 2016. In the meantime, de-partments can continue to placeorders [email protected].

SPS is currently developingnew processes to support depart-mental IT purchases. SPS will con-sult with stakeholders as it devel-ops the processes, which will bepublicized in the coming months.

“Staff and faculty will have ac-cess to a convenient online portalwhere they can obtain quotes andplace orders,” Ms. Davis says.“Re-directing internal purchasesto Strategic Procurement Serviceswill deliver cost savings to depart-ments by eliminating the current

Campus Computer Store mark-up.”

The Queen’s Mobile Voice andData Plans will transition directlyto ITS after the store closes. Untilthat time, staff and faculty phonerequests can continue to be sub-mitted to [email protected] process changes that occur asa result of the transition to ITSwill be communicated to the uni-versity community at a futuredate.

Students, faculty and staffmembers will no longer be able topurchase IT products for personaluse from the Campus ComputerStore after April 29, 2016. Personalpurchases will continue at thestore up until that date, but inven-tory and displays will be reducedas the store prepares to cease op-erations.

Payroll deduction loans forstaff and faculty will no longer beoffered after Dec. 24, 2015 at noon.Furthermore, staff and facultymembers will not be able to add totheir existing payroll deduction

loan after that point. ITS will con-tinue to administer all existingloans after the store ceases opera-tions.

Staff and faculty members withloans will continue with their pay-out schedule until the loans arepaid off.

Non-academic misconduct advisorycommittee begins consultationsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The Advisory Committee onNon-Academic Misconduct (AC-NAM) is now formed, and has ini-tiated an extensive consultationprocess with the Queen’s commu-nity.

The committee was announcedfollowing direction from theBoard of Trustees for the univer-sity to review its current non-aca-demic misconduct system withthe aim of improving the systemto support student safety, healthand wellness.

“The committee includes repre-sentatives from a diverse range ofbodies, including students, uni-versity senators, and administra-tors,” says Principal Daniel Woolf.“We are looking forward to re-ceiving valuable input from a vari-ety of stakeholders as the reviewis undertaken.”

The committee began its con-sultations last week at Alma MaterSociety (AMS) Assembly. In thecoming weeks the group will meetwith several other stakeholdergroups including Athletics andRecreation, Residences, the SenateCommittee on Non-AcademicDiscipline (SONAD), Society ofGraduate and Professional Stu-dents (SGPS) Council, Senate, and

the Board of Trustees. The committee will also host

consultation opportunities for sev-eral key external stakeholdergroups. This is the initial round ofconsultations; more will be held inthe winter term.

“We recognize there are

strongly held views on all sides ofthis topic, and all are concernedwith student safety,” says Princi-pal Woolf. “We want to considerall of those perspectives in a fairprocess that ultimately results in abetter non-academic misconductsystem.”

Sherri Ferris knows that donat-ing to the annual fundraising cam-paign for theUnited Way ofKingston, Fron-tenac Lennoxand Addingtonmakes a differ-ence. She’s seenit first-handherself, havingaccessed someof the agenciesthat the United Way supports.

The labour representative forthe Queen’s United Way campaignand a staff member for PhysicalPlant Services for nearly threedecades, Ms. Ferris has been in-volved with the campaign sincethe early 2000s.

Over the years she has seenthe campaign evolve, but for herthe reason for getting involvedremains the same – donating tothe United Way helps the com-munity.

“I think it’s an important part

of the Queen’s community andKingston as a whole. Some peoplethink United Way is only aboutthe underprivileged or specialneeds, but it has so much more todo with our community from Bet-ter Beginnings to seniors, even do-mestic violence, the shelters,” shesays. “You don’t know who withinour community has had to accesstheses services. I, personally, havehad to access these agencies sup-ported by the United Way and Ihave always found them helpful.”

She adds that with the widerange of agencies supported, theUnited Way has an amazing reachwithin the community. For her,one of the keys is the support oflocal youth organizations, such asthe Boys and Girls Club.

“It touches everybody. I figurethat everybody will know some-one that uses some kind of UnitedWay agency within their street, orcircle of friends,” she says.“There’s probably someone thatthey know that has reached out tothis organization.”

The unions that representworkers at Queen’s have long sup-

ported the campaign and continueto give to the United Way, Ms. Fer-ris adds.

The United Way Campaign atQueen's has set a goal to raise$300,000 from students, staff, fac-ulty and retirees. Queen’s is a keypartner in the annual campaign,comprising 10-15% of the totalraised each year.

University updates research administration policyAn updated policy governing

all research administration activ-ity at Queen’s recently came intoeffect. Mark Kerr, Senior Com-munications Officer, sat downwith Karina McInnis, ExecutiveDirector, University ResearchServices, and Heather Woermke,University Controller, to discussthe updated policy and its impacton the research community.

MK: What is the purpose ofthis updated policy?

KM: At Queen’s, many peoplecontribute to the university’s drivefor research excellence. The up-dated policy clearly outlines theirroles and responsibilities and re-moves any ambiguity that mayhave existed in the past. As a re-sult, researchers, faculties andservice units will have clear direc-tion on resolving any issues ormatters that might arise.

MK: What is the scope of theupdated policy?

KM: The policy is quite broad,as the name would suggest. It cov-

ers all research activity conducted,or proposed to be conducted, un-der the auspices of the universitywhile using Queen’s personnel,students, premises, resources, fa-cilities or equipment. The updatedpolicy also outlines the responsi-bilities of staff or faculty responsi-ble for managing or administeringresearch activity.

MK: Why was it necessary toupdate the policy?

KM: Following the implemen-

tation of the new budget model in2013, Queen’s created a separatepolicy for the indirect costs ofsponsored research, which recog-nizes that indirect costs of re-search revenue now flow to thefaculties. All of the remaining pol-icy statements from the original1995 policy, and other modifica-tions, have been grouped into thisupdated policy, which is closelyaligned to the requirements of ourexternal research funders, such as

the federal Tri-Agencies.MK: Are there any significant

changes as a result of the update?HW: Included as part of the

launch of the policy are proce-dures that enable Financial Serv-ices to support departments andfaculties in managing over-spend-ing on research projects, whileproviding tools to principal inves-tigators (PIs) to ensure research isnot disrupted. These procedureswere approved by the Vice-Princi-pals’ Operational Committee afterbeing endorsed by the deans, as-sociate deans of research and busi-ness officers. Financial Serviceshas been working closely with fac-ulties on their implementation.

In summary, any research proj-ect that is in deficit for three con-secutive months will be deacti-vated, and any expenditures afterthe date of deactivation will becharged to the departmental oper-ating account.

MK: What happens if PIs antic-ipate temporary over-spending ona research project?

HW: Should PIs anticipate tem-porary over-spending on a re-search project, the best approachwould be to request approvalfrom their department or facultyfor overdraft protection using theform on the Financial Serviceswebsite. Approved forms will beforwarded to Financial Services(Research Accounting). Receipt ofan approved form will result in atemporary increase in the projectbudget, and alleviates any need totemporarily recode expenses.

Where have the crayfish gone?BY CHRIS ARMES,COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Researchers from Queen’s Uni-versity, working with colleaguesfrom the Ontario Ministry of theEnvironment and Climate Change,have linked the localized near-ex-tinction of a native crayfish speciesin four lakes in Algonquin Park todeclining calcium levels, a long-term legacy of acid rain on forestsoils and aquatic ecosystems.

“Crayfish are an integral com-ponent of aquatic food webs, be-cause they function at multipletrophic levels and are a key ele-ment in the diets of popular recre-ational and economically impor-tant fish species,” says KrisHadley, the lead author of thestudy and a PhD student atQueen’s University at the time thestudy was conducted.

Acid rain “mobilizes” calciumfound in the soil and bedrock.Once mobilized, calcium levels inthe water increase, before decliningas calcium stores are used up. Inareas such as Kingston, wheremuch of the bedrock is comprisedof limestone, the effect is mitigatedby the high volume of calciumfound in the bedrock. The lakes an-alyzed by the research team arefarther north on Canadian Shieldbedrock, which has a much lowerconcentration of calcium. The lakesselected allowed for a much cleareranalysis of the effects of calciumdecline on larger organisms.

Because long-term data recordsof lake water pH and calcium lev-els are typically not available, re-

searchers analysed fossilized mi-croscopic organisms (i.e., algal re-mains) to reconstruct past lakewater pH levels and fossils of wa-ter fleas to track past changes inlake water calcium concentrations.Using this technique, the teamwas able to examine environmen-tal trends in the four lakes overthe past 150 years.

The research team found evi-dence that acid rain had impactedsome of the lakes over time, butthey also inferred marked declinesin lake water calcium levels – aknown legacy of acid rain. Dr.Hadley says the team’s findingssuggest calcium concentrationsbegan declining in these lakes asearly as the 1960s, and may nowhave fallen below the thresholdrequired for the survival of someaquatic organisms.

Crayfish shed their protectivecarapace – the upper exoskeletonthat is primarily composed of cal-cium carbonate – several timesduring their life cycle and, as a re-sult, have high calcium require-ments. The researchers found thatlack of calcium in the lakes hascontributed to a decline in cray-fish populations.

“Although lake water pH hasbeen recovering in many water-ways with controls on acid emis-sions, there has been no such re-covery in calcium levels, and thusaquatic organisms are beginning toshow the negative effects of whatwe are colloquially calling ‘aquaticosteoporosis,’” says John Smol (Bi-ology), the Canada Research Chairin Environmental Change.

Principal Daniel Woolf re-cently concluded a successful in-ternational trip toFrance and Ger-many aimed atstrengthening rela-tionships with part-ner institutions andbuilding connections withalumni.

During the trip he met withrepresentatives from universitiesin both countries, hosted a specialreception for alumni and Queen’sstudents on exchange, and signeda renewed exchange agreementwith Institut d’Études politiquesde Paris (Sciences Po).

“Building partnerships withuniversities around the worldhelps to support Queen’s aca-demic mission and the objectivesof the Comprehensive Interna-tional Plan,” says Daniel Woolf,Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “I

was especially pleased to renewour exchange agreement with Sci-ences Po during this trip, as it isan institution with a strong inter-national reputation and an im-portant strategic partner forQueen’s in France.”

Principal Woolf and FrédéricMion, President of Sciences Po,signed the renewed undergradu-ate exchange agreement in Paris.The two institutions have part-nered since 2007 with more than150 students having participated

in exchanges during that time.While in Paris Principal Woolf

also met with the ambassador ofCanada for UNESCO, representa-tives, including Queen’s alumni,from the Institut européen d'ad-ministration des affaires (IN-SEAD), hosted a special receptionfor Queen’s alumni and studentson exchange in France, and deliv-ered two academic papers at theBibliothèque universitaire deslangues et civilisations and theUniversité Paris-Sorbonne.

In Germany, Principal Woolfmet with alumni as well as theconsular officials in Stuttgart. Hevisited the University of Tübin-gen, one of Queen’s partners inthe Matariki Network of Univer-sities, as well as the University ofStuttgart, a growing research andacademic partner for Queen’s,where a double degree programin chemistry is under discussion.

“International visits are vitallyimportant for advancing the uni-versity’s internationalization pri-

orities and raising Queen’s globalprofile,” says Kathy O’Brien, As-sociate Vice-Principal (Interna-tional), who accompanied Princi-pal Woolf on this trip. “Therelationships that are developedand strengthened with our inter-national partners support theComprehensive InternationalPlan by enhancing Queen’s stu-dent learning experience and re-search activities through deeperinternational engagement.”

Queen’s launched its Compre-hensive International Plan in Au-gust 2015 to support its interna-tionalization efforts. Among theplan’s goals are strengtheningQueen’s international researchengagement and creating moreopportunities for student mobil-ity through programs like aca-demic exchange programs.

The plan also aims to attracthigh quality international stu-dents to Queen’s and to increaseinternational educational oppor-tunities on the Queen’s campus.

5 Things to know aboutPrincipal Emeritus Ronald Watts

On Oct. 9, the university lost a leading member of the Queen’s communitywhen Principal Emeritus Ronald L. Watts passed away. In honour of Dr. Wattsthe Gazette takes a brief look at some of the highlights of his life and career.

Dr. Watts was born inJapan to CanadianAnglican missionaryparents, he was edu-cated at the Univer-

sity of Toronto (BAH 1952) andwould later attend Oxford Univer-sity on a Rhodes Scholarship (BA1954, MA 1959, DPhil 1962).

Dr. Watts first arrivedat Queen’s in 1955 asa lecturer in philoso-phy. He later trans-ferred to the Depart-

ment of Political and EconomicScience in 1961. He also took an in-terest in the administration and stu-dents of Queen's, serving as a resi-dence don in McNeill House.

Dr. Watts was selectedDean of Arts and Sci-ence in 1969 and, at theage of 45, became Prin-cipal in 1974. His terms

coincided with a reduction in govern-ment funding to universities. He de-scribed his terms in office as a time of“constraint, consolidation, and con-structive change.”

Dr. Watts’ main aca-demic interest wasthe comparativestudy of federal polit-ical systems. He pub-

lished several books, including:New Federations: Experiments in theCommonwealth; Multi-Cultural Soci-eties and Federalism; Administrationin Federal Systems; and ComparingFederal Systems.

Dr. Watts’ contribu-tions both to academeand society at largewere recognized withfive honorary degrees,

his appointment as an Officer ofthe Order of Canada in 1979, andhis promotion to Companion in2000, and with his fellowship inthe Royal Society of Canada.

Five faculty members will bepresented with the university’sPrize for Excellence in Research atthis year’s fall convocation cere-monies. Nominated by theirpeers, the prize recognizes and re-wards researchers, in any faculty,for major contributions to theirfield – either completed in recentyears or recognized in recentyears. The award also recognizesthe impact of their study and cele-brates research performed whilethe scholar has been at Queen’s.

Anne Croy (Biomedical andMolecular Sciences), Jacalyn Duf-fin (History of Medicine), MarkDiederichs (Geological Sciencesand Geological Engineering),Guojun Liu (Chemistry) andMyra Hird (Environmental Stud-ies) are this year’s recipients.

“As in the past, the nomina-tions this year reflected thestrength of our faculty, and thebreadth and depth of Queen’s re-search, scholarly and creativework. The research accomplish-

ments of all the nominees wereimpressive. I was delighted to seean increase in the number of nom-inations and acknowledge facultyfor nominating their colleagues.This is an important recognitionin itself”, says Steven Liss, Vice-Principal (Research). “The fivefaculty members are internation-ally-recognized researchers whohave made significant and impor-tant contributions. Their work isat the cutting edge of their respec-tive fields and areas across thehumanities, social sciences, natu-ral sciences, engineering andhealth sciences. My sincere con-gratulations to this year’s recipi-ents.”

Dr. Croy is an internationallyrecognized expert and leader inreproductive immunology re-search. Her numerous contribu-tions reflect her dedication to in-novative, high-quality science andinclude landmark contributions toour understanding of the mater-nal-fetal interface across species.Her pioneering work in which sheidentified and characterized uter-ine natural killer cells led to

recognition of these cells as a dis-tinct phenotype. Dr. Croy’s contri-butions to the scientific and med-ical communities extendsubstantially beyond her ownwork. She has distinguished her-self in teaching and as a mentor.

As the Hannah Professor inthe History of Medicine in theFaculty of Health Sciences atQueen’s University, Dr. Duffin isa pioneer in the medical humani-ties and an internationallyrenowned leader in the field ofhistory of medicine. Her booksand articles reflect groundbreak-ing work in the history of medicaltechnology, the history of scien-tific discovery, the history ofmedical practice, and the investi-gation of concepts of disease. Atwo-time winner of the Jason A.Hannah Medal in the History ofMedicine, she is an elected Fel-low of both the Royal Society ofCanada and the Canadian Acad-emy of Health Sciences.

Dr. Diederichs’ research fo-cuses on the failure of rock, andon safe engineering design for ex-cavations in challenging geologi-

cal conditions at great depth.Continually advancing standardsof practice in underground engi-neering, he has published 240contributions, has given numer-ous invited keynote lectures andis sought after to instruct industryshort courses. Numerous profes-sional society and academicawards have recognized Dr.Diederichs’ research excellence,including his induction as a Fel-low of the Engineering Instituteof Canada in 2015.

First attracted to Queen’s Uni-versity as a Canada ResearchChair in 2004, Dr. Liu’s pioneeringwork on polymer self-assemblyhas bloomed and inspired scien-tists around the world. Born andraised in China, he attended theUniversity of Toronto for a mas-ter’s and PhD, where he started todevelop a passion for polymermaterials. This has inspired hiswhole career, as a post-doctoralfellow at the University ofToronto (1989) and then at McGill(1990), and the start of his inde-pendent work at the University ofCalgary as an assistant professor

in 1990. There, he rose up theranks very quickly, becoming anassociate professor in 1995 and afull professor only four yearslater.

A Queen's National Scholarand Fellow of the Royal Society ofCanada, Dr. Hird is a distin-guished interdisciplinary scholarwith an international reputationfor her multifaceted, collaborativeinvestigations into science studiesand environmental issues. Dr.Hird is Director of the genera Re-search Group, an interdisciplinaryresearch network of collaboratingnatural, social, and humanitiesscholars, and Director of WasteFlow, an interdisciplinary re-search project focused on waste asa global scientific-technical andsocio-ethical issue. She has pub-lished eight books and more than60 articles and book chapters on adiversity of topics relating to sci-ence studies.

In addition to receiving theirprize at this year’s fall convoca-tion ceremonies, the winners willalso present public lectures in2016.

Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), has appointedDavid R. Pichora as the inauguralPaul B. Helliwell Chair in Or-thopaedic Research in the Faculty ofHealth Sciences. This appointment isfor a five-year period from July 1,2015 to June 30, 2020.

After graduating with his Doctorof Medicine from Queen's in 1978, Dr.Pichora completed his orthopaedictraining at Queen's in 1984. He wenton to complete postgraduate fellow-ships in trauma, orthopaedic andhand surgery at Sunnybrook MedicalCentre in 1985, and hand and micro-surgery at the University of Alabamaat Birmingham in 1986.

Dr. Pichora returned to Queen's asan academic surgeon in 1986 and hasbeen making outstanding contribu-tions locally, nationally and interna-tionally ever since. he was promotedto professor in the Department ofSurgery and granted tenure in 1998.Dr. Pichora is an active researcher,with particular interest in computer-assisted surgery, wrist and shoulderbiomechanics, kinematic studies ofthe rheumatoid wrist, 3D motion andimaging studies of the upper extrem-ity, and clinical outcome studies in or-thopaedic trauma.

From 1991 to 1997, Dr. Pichorawas the medical co-director ofKingston General Hospital's RegionalTrauma Service. From 1993 to 1998,he served as program director in or-thopaedics, and served as chairmanof the division from 1994 to 2009.

In 2004, Dr. Pichora was ap-pointed chief of staff at Hotel DieuHospital, and in 2009 he was askedto lead the hospital as its chief exec-utive officer, a position he still holds.

Established in 2014, the Paul B.Helliwell Chair in Orthopaedic Re-search will help to attract and sup-port clinician scientists, enable clini-cal research, enhance a culture ofcollaborative, trans-disciplinary in-vestigation, and strengthen Queen’sreputation as a leading research in-stitution that is committed to bio-medical science.

The “5 Weeks to FAB”programis designed to help participantsachieve and enjoy the benefits ofbeing active and looking and feel-ing their best.

Over the five weeks partici-pants will be introduced to vari-ous physical activity options aswell as the key components of fit-ness which will provide themwith the building blocks to im-prove muscle tone and appear-ance and achieve goals.
