Theprocess by which an alluringlymulti-faceted image of JFK wasconstructed during his lifetime - aserotic symbol, familial symbol, warhero, precocious politician, andman of letters -- will be examined. How the 'Camelot' image ofKennedy evolved in Americanpolitical culture after hisassassination will also be explored.

3 June 2011, 6.30pmThe Jenny Cheshire Lectures inSociolinguisticsArticulating SociohistoricalLinguistics Ecologically: Lessonsfrom European Colonial Expansion
Salikok Mufwene, Frank J. McLoraineDistinguished Service Professor atthe University of Chicago
Adopting an emergentist approach to language evolution but focusingespecially on the late wave of theIndo-European dispersal since the15th century, I will show howchanges undergone and caused byEuropean colonial languages largelyreflect changes in the socioeconomicstructures experienced and initiatedby the migrating populations. I willdiscuss the extent to which particularpopulation structures in the colonies
qua contact settings areconsequences of particulareconomic systems (the latter beinglargely determined by particulargeographical ecologies), and how the notion of 'population structure',augmented with that of'periodization', can help us accountfor the specific ways in which therelevant European languagesevolved structurally. I will also arguethat the same ecological factorsinvoked to explain the varyingdirections of structural changes canalso help us account differentially forlanguage vitality (which languagesprevailed at the expense of whichothers where and when) in thecolonies.
