Retros award for Quartz 2005-06 (= Proca-100-MT)by Bernd Gräfrath

It was decided that Quartz's informal tourney for the retros of 2005-06 should

be regarded as the Proca-100-Memorial Tourney (cf. Quartz 30, p. 511). This is quite appropriate, because in 1923/24, Niels Hoeg (1876-1951) and Zeno Proca (1906-1936) invented the defensive retractor (in which the retracting parties do not cooperate, but fight against each other). The innovative Romanian composer introduced the idea that the retracting party decides whether to uncapture anything (and if so, which unit). This became known as the "type Proca" of the defensive retractor, and it turned out to be very fruitful (although T.R. Dawson thought that the "type Hoeg" was more promising). The "type Proca" has recently experienced a renaissance in its combination with the fairy condition Anticirce (for the historical background cf. Wolfgang Dittmann's book Der Blick zurueck, esp. p. 151 ff). It is a nice coincidence that two problems of this specific genre reached the top places in the award of the tourney in memory of Zeno Proca. The following retro problems were published in the relevant issues of Quartz: 598, 599, 600, 601, 624, 625, 626, 627, 648, 649, 650, 673, 674. But 625 replaces 598, and so 12 problems took part in the competition. One more remark before we come to the winners: In the publication of problem no. 673, it was forgotten to mention that it is an Anticirce Proca of the type Calvet (in which a piece is permitted to capture on the same square on which it is reborn); cf. Klaus Wenda's clarification in his paper "Verteidigungsrueckzueger mit Rochade-Thematik", published in Koenig & Turm 23 (October 2007), esp. p. 69. This addition is necessary because otherwise the forward move 1. 0-0 does not lead to mate, since Black has the defense 1. ... Kb1-a1, and the white rook f1 does not attack a1.[editor’s note: in our point of view, Anticirce means Anticirce type Calvet by default]

1st Prize: no. 625 - K. Wenda (dedicated to P. Rãican)

Like in his prize-winner R0117 of StrateGems 2005, Klaus Wenda presents an impressive Anticirce Proca twin with a selfmate stipulation. No. 625 is shorter, but this is not necessarily a fault and could even be regarded as an improvement in the economy of moves. With only two retracting moves, the composer has succeeded in showing two matching solutions which incorporate both unity and diversity. In both variations, Black is forced to block the square b8, because this is the only legal way to nullify the check to which the white king is exposed in the retraction. In the first part, this is done by the black queen, and in the second, it is done by the black rook. But then White uses these pieces by giving check in the forward play, and Black's only defense is to give White the required selfmate.

2nd Prize: no. 599 - W. Dittmann

1st Honourable Mention: no. 649 - A. Frolkin & K. Prentos

This Anticirce Proca features the surprising waiting move 2.d3-d4, which is followed by the retraction 3.d2-d3, but also involves interesting tries: The immediate retraction 2. d2-d4 leads to a position in which White himself is in Zugzwang (although he has many movable pieces!), and the retraction of an en-passant-capture (4.b5xa6 e.p. +white pawn a2) cannot be played on move 2, because White must direct the rook g3 via d3 to d8 (and not via e3 or f3 to e8 or f8), since otherwise, Black can block the rook's mating move on the 8th rank with a capture which leads the black queen to d8.

This proof game shows the interesting "relay theme", in which a pawn promotes and is then captured by another pawn which promotes, and this promotee is again captured by a pawn on its way to promotion. The problem shows this impressively with three promotions to bishops. However, the heavy tool of a king standing in check from a promoted bishop in the diagram position was used for this achievement.

Commendations (in chronological order, without ranking)

No. 601 - P. Rãican

It is nice to see an Anticirce Proca in which the white king is not standing on e1. This increases the puzzle element, and this problem really is a nice riddle, which is further increased by the mate given by the black knight. The feature of p u z z l e m e n t s h o u l d n o t b e underestimated in comparison with other aesthetic criteria (as Sam Loyd has taught us!). 1.Th1:Fh8! Rg7-g6+! The idea of combining several phoenix-queens has already been shown in several problems; see, for example, A. Frolkin's H15 in the FIDE-Album 1995-97 Annexe (from Die Schwalbe 1996; with two white Ceriani-Frolkin-queens, one black Pronkin-queen, and even an additional white Anti-Pronkin-queen). In no. 601, we have two white Ceriani-Frolkin-queens and a white Pronkin-queen, with a white homebase, at the cost of three pairs of doubled pawns: 1.d4 g6 2.d5 Bh6 3.Qd4 Bf4 4.Qb6 ab6 5.g4 Ra3 6.g5 Rg3 7.a4 d6 8.a5 Qd7 9.a6 Qh3 10.a7 f5 11.a8=Q Sf6 12.Qa3 0-0 13.Qf3 Kg7 14.Qh5 gh5 15.g6 Kh6 16.g7 Rg6 17.g8=Q Kg5 18.Qe6 Kg4 19.Qe5 de5 20.d6 Be6 21.d7 Bg8 22.d8=Q Rf7 23.Qd1.

No. 648 - N. Dupont (dedicated to Mario Richter) Pronkin-knights have been presented in Silvio Baier's very helpful paper "The Knight-Pronkin in Proof Games", published in Quartz 32. Nicolas Dupont combines two Pronkin-knights with a Pronkin-rook of the same colour, with a white homebase, at the cost of one pair of doubled pawns and four black knights.

Jugement du 7TT - Quartz (Take & Make)par P. Rãican
