Allsop and Brittain take over the Captaincy

”The King is dead; long live the King” –

and so at the end of May each year the

Captaincy at CGQL changes hands. At the

Captain’s Dinner Malcolm Dodd and

Anita Rottland bowed out with generous

speeches thanking all those who had made

their year so special, and receiving applause

for a job well done from all the members.

Then it was the turn of the new Captains

David Allsop and Janet Brittain to don

their green jackets and start their reigns.

The changeover period is filled with serious

golf, traditional ceremony, and plenty of

good humour. The Captain’s Plates, won

this year by Noel Hume & Charlotte

Waters is one of the most important

competitions of the year. This is followed

by the Captain’s Dinner, a sumptious affair

at the Hotel Quinta do Lago, organised

splendidly by Thelma Angel.

On the Sunday morning there is the

Captain’s Drive-in, traditionally a Bogey

Par Event. And whilst all that is in

progress, the salubrious ceremony of the

changeover of Captain’s photographs

occurs at 12.00 precisely. After the Bogey/

Par comes the drive-in, with water balls,

flour balls and even golf balls, and then its

time for a little rest before the Past

Captains Classic and beach lunch on the

Monday. After that any other weeks work

will seem quite easy. For one of last year’s Captains, peace at last..Malcolm

and Janet Dodd looking relaxed at the Drive In.

Experience Triumphs over Relative Youth

Singles Matchplay Championships

To the delight of many the Singles matchplay

championships were won by two of the clubs

more senior members, Dora Smith and Peter

Finlinson , who can count a far few years of

golfing experience between them. Despite the

punishing schedule and the full heat of summer,

they both came through testing early rounds to

be declared matchplay champions.

Peter Finlinson can count some famed scalps

along the way, beating Roger Mortimer 4 and

2, Michael Hickey 4 and 3, and Frank van

Ettinger 7 and 6 (a dog’s licence). In the final he

came across Malcolm Dodd, who had seen off

Darrel Quirk, James Kidd and Trichur

Ranganathan. On the day Peter was too good

for Malcolm and claimed the trophy winning 4

up on the 15th.

On the Ladies side Dora Smith showed huge

stamina by progressing through all the bye

rounds to reach the final. On the way she

narrowly defeated Barbara Steinberg on the 19th,

and went onto to win over Thelma Angel 3

and 2, and Linda Einwallner 5 and 3 to play Liz

Healey in the final. Liz had had a rather easier

route as having defeated Lenny den Toom 3

and 2 in the first round she received a walkover

in the semi-final. The final was a classic battle

with Dora winning on the 19th.

Janet Brittain and David Allsop in full regalia

as the newly appointed Captains for 2001/2002.

Captain’s Plates

Hume & Waters – handed

trophy on a Plate

It was a very hot day in May, when 63

starters lined up on QL1 and QL10 to play

for the Captain’s Plate. And at the end of

the day it was Noel Hume and Charlotte

Waters who lifted the trophies.

Noel Hume, playing off a handicap of 13

showed good consistency over the front 9,

only to burn up the back 9 with a gross 39,

to register a net 68 in total. This was too

good for Robin Thomson , whose solid

round of 13 pars and 5 bogies, left him with

a net 70. In third place was Rod Sumner,

net 71, who but for an 8 on the short 13th

may well have won the tournament.

In the ladies event, Charlotte Waters, with

birdies on 13,15 and 6, registered an

excellent gross score of 77 (net 68). She was

one shot ahead of Janet Dodd, whorecorded pars on all the par 3 holes. In third

place was Barbara Steinberg with a net 71.

Captain’s Drive-In

The Course wins yet again.

In the traditional Bogey/Par event that

preceded the Captain’s Drive-in only

Gordon Greig, Pam Bruford, and Sheila

Partington. managed to beat the course. Pam

Bruford was 2 down after 9 but an excellent

back 9 saw her claw back 4 holes to win 2 up

on the 18th. Gordon Greig, on the other hand

was 2 up at the turn, but that old static golf

course fought back hard. A net birdie on the

17th set him dormie 1 up, and clinching a

par on the 18th he won the match.

Other notable scores on the ladies side came

from Sheila Partington who went 3 up after

11 but then fellback on the 17th to win by 2,

but with a less dynamic back 9 than the

winner. Mention should also be made of

Dorothy Leake who came in 3rd having

been one down on the 15th she drew level

on the 17tth

George Farrall registered second in the

Men’s competition, remaining all square

with the course after 18, as was Roger

Mortimer who came in third place.

Thanks to everyone’s generosity we were

able to give a cheque for Esc 150000 to

Caroline Thomson of the Associação das

Crianças do Algarve, committed to helping

the deprived children of the local

community. Our donation will go towards

providing some of the children from the

poorest homes with a short holiday.

During July and August we are

experimenting with playing Men’s Day

competitions in the morning to avoid the

heat of the afternoon. With the numbers

who are supporting the competitions, it

would appear to have been, with one or two

complaints, a success. The Sunday mixed

competitions continue to be very popular

and have been well supported even though

we are in the quiet season and many

members have returned to their native

cooler climes.

Applications for Gala Week are rolling in

and it looks as if we will have another full

house for the week. Do send in your

applications if you haven’t already done so.

After Gala Week George Farrall will again

be organising the Captain’s Charity day and

I would ask as many of you as possible to

support the Captains so that we can at least

equal last year’s total of Esc1.7million. Keep

your eyes on the notice board for details.

Concerning the notice board, please do take

a little time to read the notices when you are

in the Clubhouse. Together with this Update

Since the last

Quarterly update, at

the end of April to be

precise, Quinta do

Lago hosted the

Portuguese Open.

Many members

volunteered as

Marshals for the event.

Those of us who took

part had a great time

being close to the

Professionals and seeing how golf should be

played. More importantly was the fun we

had and the spirit which prevailed with all

the club members. Congratulations go to

Bill and his able assistant Edwin Bisset for

taking on what turned out to be a mammoth

task. As a thank you, the organisers of the

event, João Lagos Sports, organised a

Shotgun Texas Scramble on the Monday

which was much enjoyed by all who took

part. The club also received a

commemorative plaque from the

Portuguese Golf Federation for the

assistance given by the members to the

successful running of the event.

The Captains Drive-in was another fun day.

The water-filled and exploding golfballs

certainly helped to start the year with a

bang. Contributions on the tee and the

sweepstake to guess the length of the

Captains drives were donated to charity.

A somewhat

interesting drive-in

certainly started

my year as Lady

Captain with a

bang. The ball,

placed on the tee

for me by my Vice

Captain Jackie, was

hit from the middle of the club but it

exploded in a cloud of white dust. I was a

little surprised but quite relieved to have hit

it well and though all augurs well for the

real ball that follows – wrong! The next ball,

also placed on the tee for me by Jackie,

exploded with a long streamer of pink

ribbon trailing behind. Now I was nervous.

I had hit two balls from the middle of the

club, surely the next would be a proper ball

and I would send it miles down the fairway

– wrong again! I decided not to accept any

more balls from Jackie and placed my own

ball on the tee. This was the one that

mattered and of course I failed miserably and

sent it about 50 metres down the fairway

but my year had started. That was over

months ago now and the time has flown by.

So far so good, there have been no signs of

any more exploding balls.

The Ladies’ competitions have been well

supported and at a time when most people

seem to flee the Algarve, we are still having

over twenty ladies playing each week. We

have played a variety of competitions, the

medal and single stableford being played as

normal on the first and third Tuesdays

respectively. Congratulations to Denise

Grayson and Sheila Pease, winners of the

June medal in their respective divisions and

to Denise again and Barbara Steinberg who

were winners of the June Stableford

competition. July saw success for Marika van

der Duim and Thelma Angel in the medal

competition and for Linda Einwallner and Pat

Morrison in the stableford competition.

The remaining Tuesday competitions have been

a variety of games designed to be light-hearted fun

games. I am not sure that everyone believes this

though. Some of us, myself included, have found

them to be very hard work!

I am looking

forward to holding

a Lady Captain’s

team versus Lady

Vice Captain’s

team match each

time there is a fifth

Tuesday in the

month. The first of

these falls in July.

Unfortunately,

Jackie will be in

England but she

has seconded

Janet Dodd as her

stand-in, to be

“Vice Captain for the day”. We look forward

to the match and to the planned “beach

lunch” to follow.

The hot weather continues and August is

set to be another quiet month but September

is fast approaching and I look forward to

seeing everyone in Gala Week.

it is an important method of communication

to you all and can resolve many questions

and dispel many rumours, which arise from

time to time. In addition there is a copy of

the Procedures for Captains and

Competition Rules Manual in the Reception

area for all to use for information and

clarification. This manual is updated as and

when necessary.

Finally a plea to new members and those of

you who visit your homes in Quinta do Lago

infrequently and perhaps are short of people

to play golf with. Do come along to any of

the competitions on Ladies Day, Men’s Day

and the Sunday Competitions, and meet up

with other members. You will be assured of a

warm welcome, a friendly game of golf, a few

drinks afterwards and the opportunity to

make new friends. Enjoy your golf and I look

forward to seeing many of you in Gala Week.

COURSE CONSULTATIVE

LEGAL AND CONTRACTUAL

N O T I C E S F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E B O A R D

In a recent exchange of correspondence with

Quinta do Lago, S.A., some doubt was cast

on the status of São Lourenço Apartments

and Lakeside Village as Qualifying

Properties as defined in the Club’s

Agreements.

Following constructive discussions with

Quinta do Lago, S.A., it is accepted that these

properties must be regarded as Qualifying,

although the current policy will not permit

the sale of new Member Titles to owners

not currently possessing one.

At the latest count, 407 fully paid up

members are now registered, and the rate of

increase in new members appears to be

slowing somewhat.

Qualifying Properties

The judge who is trying the case against the

Club brought by David Chalk has not yet

set a trial date, and the hearing now looks to

be in September at the earliest, or more

likely, even later.

Nothing further can be reported on this

subject, and in view of the public

announcements by the parent company of

Sociedade do Golfe we must assume that

with changes in shareholding under active

consideration, consolidation of our

Agreements has a low priority. Rumours

are plentiful about who is bidding for what,

and we await some solid information with

great interest.

Litigation

The sub Committee appointed to review the

Club Statutes has now concluded its

deliberations and submitted its

recommendations to the Executive Board.

An announcement on possible changes may

be made shortly, with full opportunity for

Members to express their views before the

matter is put to an E.G.M

INFORMATION BULLETIN

Since the AGM the Board has undertaken

a thorough review of its methods of

operation and has decided to adopt a

committee structure similar to that, which

is common in most private golf clubs. It is

felt that, by introducing this system, the

Board will be able to operate more

efficiently and effectively. It will also allow

the responsibilities to be shared more

evenly between members of the Board.

There wil l be two Executive Board

members on each Committee, one of

whom will be the Chairman, which will

ensure continuity of operation in times of

absence and will provide succession from

year to year. With two Board members per

committee it will also mean a full flow of

information to the Board. Committees will

meet monthly and report to the Executive

Board meeting.

The Committees are as follows:

GOLF COMMITTEE

Responsible for: 1) Competitions

Programme(Formats,Rules and procedures)

2) Interclub League & other representative

teams and/or competitions 3) Local rules

Course Consultative Committee –

responsible for liaison with SGQDL with

regard to condition, maintenance and repair

of the golf courses.

Handicap Committee – responsible for all

matters relating to handicaps, qualifying

competitions and liaison with Portuguese

Golf Federation.

HOUSE COMMITTEE

Responsible for:1) Buildings and amenities

2) Car and Buggy Parks 3) Clubhouse

management 4) Bar and Food franchise 5)

Gardens and courtyard 6) Library 7)

Cleaning contract 8) All social functions

with or without golf

FINANCE COMMITTEE

Responsible for: 1) Financial and

Management accounts 2) Budgeting 3)

Liaison with external auditors 4) Liaison

with Fiscal Board 5) Presentation of

accounts to AGM 6) Recruitment of staff

LEGAL AND CONTRACTUAL

COMMITTEE

Responsible for: 1) Clubs contracts and

agreements 2) Members tit les 3)

Application process for membership 4)

Statutes 5) Members guide and rule book

A sub-committee has been formed to

review the club statutes to include the

Chairman of the Fiscal Board and the

Chairman of the Assembly Board.

The Executive Board feels that these

major changes will allow the Club to go

forward positively into the future with

openness and accessibility.

HANDICAPS

Since the last Quarterly Update, the

Handicap Committee has had a re-shuffle.

Eric Grayson has resigned and Nick Shailer

has taken his place. Pat Bisset and myself

remain in Office and of course we now have

Mark Foot also on the Committee.

Gala Week is almost upon us and once again

we need to remind you of your handicap

responsibilities. It is very important to a

smooth running Gala Week to ensure that

handicap problems do not feature. I know

that the conversion from the CONGU to

the EGA Handicap System caused some

confusion in the early stages, but hopefully

by now you are getting used to the new

European system. This Gala Week, of

course will be the first one to apply the EGA

System and it is important

to all of us to have a problem free week.

As in previous years, we ask you to ensure

that your CGQL Handicap Committee is

kept fully informed of all your Qualifying

Scores played elsewhere. Please submit an

up-to-date Playing Record in good time. A

Handicap Certificate from other golf clubs

is insufficient to justify a handicap increase.

Before participating in the Gala Week events,

please check that your EGA Exact Handicap

is correct and reflects all your “Away”

Qualifying Scores. Playing off a higher

handicap than the one posted on the Notice

Board will result in automatic

disqualification.

Denise Grayson - Secretary

Summertime, as we well know, is mainte-

nance time and this year has been no dif-

ferent. Frustrating as it may be to play on

less than perfect courses, hollow tining and

scarifying are necessary to keep the course

playable throughout the rest of the year.

The work on Ria Formosa is now virtu-

ally complete, and currently work is

proceding apace on Quinta do Lago so that

everything is ready in time for September.

The committee has expressed its continu-

ing concern over

the irrigation

problems on Ria Formosa and will con-

tinue to monitor the situation. In the mean-

time Paulo Viegas, the Greenkeeper, has

kept up a policy of heavily watering the

fairways in case of a breakdown in the sys-

tem, or a general shortage of water. A full

report will be included in the next Update

at the end of October.
