Welcome to the second issue of SDSM&T Quarterly!Thank you for the very positive responses to the magazine’s inaugural issue this fall. We hope you enjoy thispublication featuring some of the many academic andresearch accomplishments of our South Dakota Tech family.

The School of Mines was founded in 1885 to preparegraduates for the developing mining industries of theDakota Territories. Over a century later we continue the

proud traditions of preparing graduates to lead the development of the business and industries that use the technological advances of today.

We are pleased that the reputation of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technologyattracts outstanding students from South Dakota, other states and the international community. The continuing growth of business and industry in our state provides increasingopportunities for the two-thirds of our graduates who are South Dakotans to use their talents to build our future. In this issue of the SDSM&T Quarterly we focus on the contributions of these graduates to strengthen the economic growth of South Dakota.

A significant number of our graduates from South Dakota are able to practice their professions in our state’s industries. Those who must leave for employment elsewhere alsoare a great resource for economic development. A recent survey indicated that two-thirds ofour alumni who currently live out-of-state would return to South Dakota to work for a company in a comparable position. As the need for engineers and scientists continues togrow more critical, these experienced leaders and managers are ready to return to SouthDakota and have the potential to encourage more business and industry to locate in our state.

We value our close working relationships with industry in forming innovative curriculardevelopments and cutting-edge research projects. The Center for Excellence in AdvancedManufacturing and Production takes our technical assistance efforts to a new level by helpingcompanies solve design and production problems through our enterprise teams. These technical assistance activities continue the traditions of tapping the resources of the universityto increase the economic development opportunities of our industrial partners.

With the new millennium fast approaching, we are building on SDSM&T’s traditions ofexcellence to strengthen our educational programs, our industrial technical assistance, ourresearch programs and our many economic development activities. We look forward to hearing your advice and recommendations as we prepare for the future.

From the gold rush of the Black Hills to thecomputer age of the 90’s and into the newmillennium.

Anita Freeman (EE ’76), a.k.a. “Alice,”provides character inspiration for corporatecomic relief.

Having no experience in dealing withJapanese businesses, the Bouchers again turnedto SDSM&T officials for assistance.

"President Gowen was a wealth of advice.His knowledge of Japanese business wasextremely helpful," said Mike Boucher.

Based on advice received from various business and economic development officials,DSS officials decided against turning over theirtechnology to Fujitsu. At this point the Bouchersrealized the need to either go full time or donothing more with their company. They decidedto go full time and seek outside financing.

The Bouchers state the real value of thetechnical assistance provided by SDSM&T andother officials was not so much the actual dollarsreceived, but the contacts and referrals within thelocal business community. They emphasize that agood business plan is critical to a company’s success.

"The problems in business are not lack ofmoney or access to capital," says Mike Boucher."If a company has a good business plan, it willhave access to the capital it needs."

He also said that Dakota Scientific changedits "perfectly miserable" business plan into something good with help from local bankingofficials. After putting a solid business plan inplace, the Bouchers successfully pursued andobtained funding from the Rapid City EconomicDevelopment Revolving Loan program and anSBA-guaranteed loan from Pioneer Bank andTrust.

Even with financing in place, immediatechallenges faced the company. After spending$60,000 of its newly obtained funding, the

onnected to the Silicon Valley fromthe South Dakota Tech campus,Dakota Scientific Software, Inc.(DSS) has created high-wage,

high-tech jobs in South Dakota. DSS provesthat a small, high-tech company can succeed inthe highly competitive computer industry whilebeing based in South Dakota.

Diane (M.S. CompSci ’91) and MikeBoucher (M.S. CompSci ’91), both Tech alumni,started the software company seven years ago.Now the business supplies high-speed mathlibraries for Sun Microsystems and several otherhigh-performance computer companies.

Diane and Mike, president and vice presidentrespectively, founded the company in December1990 on a shoestring budget with $10,000 oftheir own money and $16,000 from theGovernor’s Office of Economic Development(GOED). Dakota Scientific focused on applyingadvanced supercomputer technology to developthe fastest math software available for desktopcomputers.

The Bouchers attribute some of their company’s growth and success to the assistancereceived from SDSM&T officials and GOED.The company’s start-up funds were used to hireTech faculty members and four studentsto further develop their software product featuring an

optimized math library.DSS succeeded in developing the fastest

math library available for Sun’s UNIX workstations. However, despite having an excellent product, the new company’s first coupleof years were lean. Initial marketing efforts didnot produce the anticipated software sales. ABush Foundation grant helped finance companybrochures and staffing a booth at theInternational Conference on Industrial andApplied Mathematics Conference (ICIAM).Selling absolutely nothing at the ICIAM conference, Dakota Scientific then tried advertising its software on the Internet. That tooproved unproductive.

The company’s first break came whenAustralia’s America Cup team approached theBouchers about using their software as the exclusive linear algebra supplier for One Australia.The exposure of DSS’s product during theAmerica Cup prompted Fujitsu to send two officials from Japan to Rapid City to visit theBouchers about licensing their software.

that did the same work for the same computer asDSS’s product. Because Cray Research had beena well known and respected computer companyfor fifteen years, this discovery was unsettling andintimidating news. After making the decision tospend an additional $2,000 to buy CrayResearch’s software, the Bouchers learned thattheir software was faster!

After taking two accounts away from itsmain competitor, Dakota Scientific started togrow. Sun Microsystems, which had 90% of themarket and was still growing, was seeking a highperformance math library and a FORTRANcompiler. In 1994 Sun bought the rights tolicense Dakota Scientific’s software.

Technical assistance officials at SDSM&Tprovided advice and referrals for assistance innegotiating and writing the contracts. Because ofSun’s market dominance, the Bouchers wereadvised to request minimum royalties to guardagainst DSS’s product being bought and put onthe shelf. Mike Boucher describes the help DSSreceived as akin to a "high tech barn raising" bythe local business community network.

After licensing some additional compiler vendors operating in the UNIX market, DSSexpanded its products and services available tothe high-performance computing market.Dakota Scientific’s growth resulted in additionaljobs being created. The company currently hastwelve, all of whom are Tech alumni.

In addition to its products for Sun’s UNIXsystems, DSS’s math libraries have proven to bethe fastest for the Windows 95,Windows NT, Solaris andSolaris/x86 markets.Customers of ApogeeSoftware, QuadricsSupercomputers, andEdinburgh Portable Compilersare just a few of the manypeople to whom DSS supplieshigh-speed math libraries.

DSS also does consultingwork for vendors who contractwith the company to workwith key suppliers. This contracting work includes optimizing large-scale scientific and engineeringcodes such as structural analysis applications formajor CAD vendors whose products simulatecar crashes for Chrysler and airplane stresses during flight for Boeing.

Dakota Scientific also is just completing athree-year research contract with Los AlamosNational Laboratory to support work in simulated nuclear bomb testing under the provisions of the comprehensive test ban treaty.DSS and Los Alamos Laboratory are co-developers of the Parallel Object-Oriented

Methods and Applications (POOMA)Framework. The Department of Energy’sAccelerated Supercomputing Initiative programat Los Alamos, Sandia, and Lawrence LivermoreNational Laboratories will use the POOMAframework to run computer applications thatsupport stewardship of the nuclear stockpile,

weapons design, climate modeling and other missions of national importance.

Persevering through the challenges, risks anduncertainties of owning their own business, theBouchers have steered DSS to an impressivegrowth these past seven years. When first started,Dakota Scientific leased space on the Tech campus as part of SDSM&T’s efforts to serve asa small business incubator and foster economicdevelopment opportunities. DSS continues tolease space on the Tech campus today in additionto space of its own off-campus. The cooperativearrangement with SDSM&T works quite well. In

addition to helping teach some classes, theBouchers also provide Tech faculty and staffwith access to their high-performance computerequipment.

SDSM&T and DSS are a good match.Dakota Scientific provides good, high-wage jobsfor the local economy. Tech produces

high-quality computer sciencegraduates that DSS needs.

Mike Boucher calls RapidCity a good place for high-techcompanies like DSS to bebased. Local governments andeconomic development officialsare cooperative. Recruiting qualified and talented people isrelatively easy. A good infrastructure, coupled withInternet access and overnightshipping services like FederalExpress, allows DSS to conduct

business anywhere in the nation. Many Techalumni want to return to South Dakota and areavailable if a company is interested. Taxes, realestate and other business expenses are relativelylow compared to other regions of the country.One DSS employee who relocated from SanJose reports that he has more spending power inRapid City even though he is earning 3/4 of hisformer salary in California—and he is much happier!

Dakota Scientific’s success brings the high-tech, entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valleyhome to South Dakota.

Surbeck Remembered As a Distinguished career and generosity touched the lives of countless youth

n an age when good role models seem in short supply,Homer Surbeck provides an inspiring example of moralfiber, faith and success. During his life, Surbeck touched thelives of countless young people through his generosity. The

seeds he planted through his philanthropy and good works willcontinue to multiply and bear fruit in the years ahead.

The Success Formula That Really Works, authored by Surbeck,describes the principles to which he faithfully adhered throughouthis life. The book provides a personal and moral compass to guidepersons in their life journeys. Urging young people to set their ownvalues and priorities in life, Surbeck encouraged faith, positivethinking, enthusiasm and hard work.

When Leighton (Homer) Surbeck (MetE ‘24) passed away thisfall at the age of 94, the South Dakota Tech family lost one of itsmost cherished friends and dedicated supporters.

"Homer Surbeck has left aneverlasting mark on the SouthDakota School of Mines andTechnology. It was an honor towork with him and call him friend,"said Dr. Richard J. Gowen,SDSM&T President.

His life spanning nearly theentire 20th century, Surbeckacquired a strong work ethic anddeep religious faith at an early age.One of his first jobs was weeding onions for ten hours a day at tencents an hour. Despite a first grade teacher who labeled him "theclass dunce," Homer went on to achieve tremendous academic andprofessional success.

He graduated with honors in 1924 in Metallurgical Engineeringfrom the South Dakota School of Mines, as it was then known.Homer received a scholarship to Yale Law School, where he graduated first in his class in 1927. He was appointed to the prestigious position of law secretary to Chief Justice WilliamHoward Taft of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Surbeck later joined a prominent Wall Street firm and became asenior partner in the Hughes, Hubbard and Reed law firm. He wasconsidered one of the country’s leading experts on anti-trust law.

Leaving his successful Wall Street practice to serve his countryduring World War II, Surbeck received a War Department Citationfor Service as Colonel and Chief Justice of Economic Branch,Military Intelligence Service. Returning to private practice after

World War II, Surbeck built a reputation as one of the finestlawyers on Wall Street. Throughout his career and success in hisprofession, Surbeck adhered faithfully to the principles of honesty,hard work and humility.

In the late 1940’s, Surbeck began a long tradition of providingeducational scholarships to young people. The scholarships hefunded throughout the years total several hundred thousand dollars. He gave over 1,000 scholarships to young people seekinghigher education at various institutions, including SDSM&T andBrigham Young University. He also sponsored a prize in geology atPrinceton University and an award for Outstanding TechnicalWriting at SDSM&T.

In 1949 Homer Surbeck began giving Rapid City High School,and later both Rapid City Central and Stevens High Schools,$3,000 each year for senior scholarships. He also made substantial

contributions to furnish GuyMarch-Math Scholarships atSDSM&T.

In addition to his philanthropic scholarship support, Surbeck contributedgenerously to many SDSM&Tcampus building projects overthe years, including the StudentCenter and the PhysicalEducation Building. In 1963

the South Dakota Board of Regents dedicated the Surbeck StudentCenter on the Tech campus in his honor.

His distinguished career earned him several honorary degreesand awards, including the Guy March Silver Medal, given bySDSM&T to honor alumni for outstanding achievement. He alsoreceived the prestigious Yale Medal, the highest honor given by theAssociation of Yale Alumni.

In October 1976, after 75 years of bachelorhood, Homer metand married Margaret Packard, widow of Gordon Packard.Retiring from active practice, he focused his dedication toward aloving partnership with Margaret Packard, who held his same setof core values. Together they shared a quest for greater understanding of science and support of education and religiousorganizations.

In 1977 Surbeck received the "Horatio Alger Award" for hisspectacular rise to success from a humble beginning. Other recipients of this distinguished award include Dr. Norman Vincent

In the foreword to The Success Formulathat Really Works, Dr. Norman VincentPeale stated, "I’ve met a lot of people thatI’ve come to admire. Some have been greatachievers, others are great inspires. Butthere is one man to whom I would ascribethe title ‘the greatest Christian gentlemanI’ve ever known.’ That man is HomerSurbeck."

Margaret Surbeck exemplifies each principle of the success formula describedin Homer’s book. Generations of studentshave been the beneficiaries of theSurbecks’ tremendous generosity throughinnumerable scholarships. They encouragedthousands of young people to reach life’shighest goals and also provided substantialsupport for United Campus Ministries.

SDSM&T has been but one of themany institutions blessed by the Surbecks.Homer was instrumental in the establishment of the Yale Law SchoolEndowment Program as well as theSDSM&T Endowment. The Surbecks’leadership and belief in planning for thefuture have contributed to the financialstrength of many educational and religiousorganizations.

The values and faith that Surbeckexemplified are timeless. They will be justas important in the 21st century and thenew millennium as the 20th century inwhich he lived. Homer’s work ethic, values,and generosity serve as a beacon of inspira-tion to future generations.

Surbeck never sought glory for himself.Instead, he worked behind the scenes tofoster the ideals of scholarship and character among youth.

Homer Surbeck is an unsung hero who lefta lasting mark on SDSM&T and society.

For more than 100 years,SDSM&T has provided South Dakota

students with a quality science andengineering education, as well as thejob skills necessary to succeed in anever-changing economy. From thegold mines of the 19th century tothe information superhighway oftoday, many SDSM&T studentshave put their education to good usein South Dakota after they graduate.Two-thirds of SDSM&T graduatesare South Dakotans. Over the yearsTech alumni have created thousandsof jobs and have helped the state’seconomy grow. They continue to doso today.

A recent survey of Tech graduates living in South Dakotashowed that their current positionsand professions cut across all majorsegments of the state's economy--business, manufacturing, agriculture,and the medical and legal

professions—to name just a few.Many SDSM&T alumni are presidents or CEOs of companiesthat employ thousands offellow South Dakotans. The creation of these jobs, many ofwhich require various technical skillsand expertise, provide an opportunity for Tech graduates tostay in South Dakota, pay taxes,raise families, and be activelyinvolved in their communities. Many additional jobs in the state are alsodirectly or indirectly tied to the primary jobs created by these businesses. Other Tech alumni workin key positions in the private sectoror numerous public agencies at allgovernmental levels.

Dilbert CharacterInspired by

SDSM&T Alumhen Anita Freeman (EE ‘76) graduatedfrom SDSM&T, the South Dakotanative never dreamed she would someday be the inspiration for a

character in one of the world’s most popular comicstrips—Dilbert. Alice, the Dilbert character with thebright pink suit and the fluffy, triangle-shaped hair, ismodeled after Anita.

The electrical engineering degree Freemanreceived from SDSM&T has led her on a successfulcareer path from the Tech campus to Kodak, PacificBell and now Cisco Systems. Her journey into thecomic strip world began when she took a position asan applications engineer with Pacific Bell inCalifornia, where she first met Dilbert creator ScottAdams in January 1991. Adams and Freeman wereteam members in the same lab at Pacific Bell.

During her first week on the job, Anita made alasting impression on Adams when she helped himfix a problem that he found very frustrating. HerMidwestern propensity to help others in need,coupled with her engineering capabilities based onher education at SDSM&T, were likely factors inFreeman’s willingness to take a chance and offer tohelp her new coworker. Grateful and impressed byher technical proficiency, Adams was soon telling hiscoworkers that "Anita knows everything."

Becoming good friends, Freeman and Adamsmaintained that friendship after he was reassignedand she took over his Pacific Bell projects. "Younever know whether everything would have been different if I had opted not to try and be helpful toAdams that first week of working with him," musesFreeman.

Adams started drawing caricature composites ofhis coworkers and bosses to relieve his boredom during office meetings at Pacific Bell. His office doodles evolved into the Dilbert character and

eventually into some comic strips.Despite finally receiving a cartoon

contract in 1989 and seeing Dilbertlaunched in 50 newspapers, Scott Adamscontinued working at Pacific Bell. Hewould rise early each morning to drawDilbert at 5 a.m. before going to hisPacific Bell job. After losing his jobdue to "downsizing" in 1995, he started devoting full time to his Dilbertendeavors.

With a daily readership of 150 million,Dilbert provides corporate comic relief forpeople who identify with cubicle office lifeand who think they are surrounded byidiots. "Dilbert is the most photocopied,pinned-up, downloaded, faxed and e-mailed comic strip in the world,"according to United Media, the company that develops and markets 150comic strips and editorial features worldwide.

In addition to the comic strip’s ownweb page, The Dilbert ZoneTM at www.unitedmedia.com, Dilbert is published in more than 1,550 newspapersin 17 languages in 39 countries and has

over two millionbooks in print.

Dilbert’s popularity can

be attributed inpart to the 52

skewered by Dilbert and his cartooncoworkers like Alice.

Even though they no longer work

together, Freeman has stayed in close touchwith Adams. During her frequent businesstravels in her current position as productmanager for Cisco Systems, Anita is alwayson the lookout for good ideas for Dilbertcharacters. Freeman didn’t see the early cartoon strips in which Alice appeared as aDilbert character and didn’t know that shewas the inspiration for Alice. A friendshowed her a Dilbert cartoon featuringAlice and told her "that is just like you."

After her coworkers began commenting"I saw you in the Sunday funnies," Anitahad an inkling of her association withAlice. However, Dilbert’s creator still hadnot said anything to her about Alice.

When a comic strip showed Alice doingsomething that Anita would never havedone, Freeman finally asked Adams directlyif the character was modeled after her.Adams sheepishly confessed that it was.

In his chapter on Alice in The Seven

Habits of Highly Defective People, Adamsadmits that "Alice’s real-world counterpart(Anita) was the model for Alice’s pink suit,her fluffy hair, her long work hours, hercoffee obsession, her technical proficiencyand her take-no-crap attitude." Dilbert

fans recognize Alice as someone whoworks hard, cuts to the chase, and haslittle tolerance for fools or idiots.

One cartoon showed Alice tossing acoworker through the ceiling for an insensitive remark about women breakingthrough the glass ceiling. Dilbert’s creatoradmits that Anita wouldn’t do some of the

things that Alice does."As far as I know, the human

version of Alice has never kicked aman into his hat, stuffed an intern

into his shirt sleeve, or slapped a man sohard he traveled back in time. But if I ever

hear about it happening, it wouldn’t surprise me," states Adams (The SevenHabits of Highly Defective People, p. 209).

Adams often took fragments ofconversations or comments by Anita andturned them into acartoon. Forexample, Anitaoften madecomments thatshe doesn’t like"dress-downFridays" becauseshe thinks shelooks better indresses than slacks.Subsequent Dilbertcartoons skeweredcasual dress days inthe corporateworkplace.

DSM&T’s mining engineeringcurriculum has changed dramatically since the first miningengineers graduated from the

School of Mines over a century ago. Themining engineers graduating today fromSDSM&T are at the vanguardof using 3-D virtual miningcomputer software to designsafer and more efficient minesfor the future.

SDSM&T is recognized as aworldwide leader in utilizingcutting-edge technology to prepare its mining engineers for the 21stcentury. The South Dakota School ofMines & Technology was the first miningdepartment in the world to implement theinnovative Vulcan integrated mine designsoftware into its curriculum.

Dr. Zbigniew Hladysz, SDSM&T Chairand Professor of Mining Engineering, isone of the very few mining professors inthe world to use the Vulcan integratedmine design software in an undergraduatecurriculum for mining engineering students.

"Ziggy", as Dr. Hladysz is affectionately known around campus, usesthe powerful, three-dimensional Vulcansoftware to teach his students

computerizedmining design by

creating underground and surface mining sites in

virtual reality.According to Dr. Hladysz, SDSM&T

may be the only university whose miningdepartment requires undergraduate students to actually use integrated minedesign software in their senior design projects. Assisted by a generous donationfrom Maptek, Inc., Hladysz developed a'virtual mine' -- a mine skeletal model thatcan be used to design a mine and to teachmining design in an integrated way withvirtual reality tools.

Thanks to Dr. Hladysz’s innovativeefforts, South Dakota Tech students learnhow to actually use this cutting-edge

technology and apply it to their seniordesign projects. Through the use of virtualmining software, undergraduate studentsdesign a computerized mine that provides athree-dimensional view of all aspects ofthe mine.

On-screen visitors can enter the mine,go down the main intake shaft and travelthrough all the tunnels and other passageways of the mine. In addition, theinfrastructure, utilities, vehicles and othercomponents necessary to operate theunderground mine are included in the integrated mine design and are shown onthe screen.

"Learning to use the mine design software is the next best thing to actual job

experience,"says Jay Johnson, a

senior mining engineeringstudent. "This is as hands-on as

you can get. It gives mining studentslike me a competitive edge in getting ajob."

Johnson estimates he spent 350-400hours on the computer this past semesterdesigning an underground mine completewith tunnels, mine shafts and the necessaryutilities infrastructure. To accompany hisvirtual mine design, Johnson prepared a150-200 page report justifying every decision and showing the calculations ofthe drill hole data that the students aregiven as a starting basis for their individually designed mines. Next semesterJohnson and his fellow senior mining engineering students will use the powerfulVulcan software to design a surface mine.

"We are the only university in the worldthat requires two mining design projectsfrom our seniors," said Dr. Hladysz. "Astudent designs an entire mine in threemonths using very sophisticated graphics.The design includes a feasibility study,

economics, reclamation,and environmental issues."

The Vulcan System usedin SDSM&T’s computerized mine designlaboratory is a state-of-the-art, integrated geosciencemodeling system

developed by Maptek, Inc. Officials ofMaptek donated the powerful, cutting-edgeVulcan software and hardware components with a total value of$150,000 to SDSM&T’s MiningDepartment. The relationship betweenMaptek and SDSM&T has been beneficialto both partners, the students and the mining industry. A publication of SiliconGraphics, Inc. recognized this productiverelationship as a ‘success story.’

Learning how to operate the computerprogram and incorporate it into classroominstruction is a complex process. To assisthis students in learning the system, Hladyszwrote his own Vulcan software textbooksto help students learn how to operate the

design.Prospective employers are very

impressed when they see the SDSM&T students’ mine design projects. Some student projects need a two-inch thickbinder to contain all of the supporting documentation and calculations. The starting salaries of some recent SDSM&Tmining engineering graduates have reached$42,000. In addition some graduates havebecome managers within threeyears.

"What Ziggy did five yearsago, the industry is starting to usetoday," says senior student JayJohnson. "Ziggy is innovative. Heis always trying to find a betterway to do things."

Dr. Hladysz recently demonstrated virtual mine design softwareon The Learning Channel program,Extreme Machines: Earth Breakers. The pro-gram features a journey down into theHomestake Mine, the deepest mine in theUnited States. Staff members of PioneerProductions from London, England, visitedthe South Dakota Tech campus last springto film Hladysz’s demonstration of virtualreality mining.

Virtual mine design offers tremendouspotential for helping the mining industrymeet the future material needs of societywhile still balancing the important environmental considerations. By firstdesigning mines on the computer, theindustry can utilize cutting-edge technologyto ensure that its mining operations in the21st century are as safe, economical, andenvironmentally sound as possible.

Dr. Hladysz’s international reputation isillustrated by his recent participation in

Mine IT’97, the first International InternetConference on Information Technologiesin the Minerals Industries. In addition topresenting a technical paper on computerized mine design, Hladysz alsoserved as a member of the organizing committee for the Internet conference.Participants included experts from Brazil,Canada, Greece, Yugoslavia, Ukraine, andGermany. The conference ran via a Web

site (www.metal.ntua.gr/msslab/MineIT97)at the National Technical University ofAthens, Greece.

With new computer technology producing significant changes in the miningindustry, SDSM&T is responding to thosechanges and modernizing its curriculum tomeet the industry’s needs. Through theinnovative efforts of Dr. Hladysz and otherfaculty members, SDSM&T’s mining engineering students leave the institutionwith the necessary technological skills and

expertise sought by pri-vate industry.

With a compe-tency in computerizedmining design undertheir belts, mining engineers from SouthDakota Tech are readyto ride the mining

industry’s wave of the future and succeedin the 21st century. The miners who cameto the Black Hills during the gold rush daysof the late 1870’s never envisioned that 120years later mining engineering students inRapid City would be designing 3-dimensional, virtual mines on a computerscreen before the first shovel of dirt is everturned.

wo SDSM&T students are mastering more than thetraditional 3R’s of education. They’ve acquired proficiency in a fourth R--reptile wrestling! From crocodiles to calculus, these students have developed

skills that help them in both the classroom and the workplace.Kent Jacobs (Mechanical Engineering senior, Rapid City) and

Craig DeSmet (Chemical Engineering freshman, Rapid City) spentlast summer performing alligator wrestling and snake shows atReptile Gardens. Both students relate their reptile wrestling experiences to benefiting them in their academic and extracurricular activities at South Dakota Tech.

Kent Jacobs is a gator-wrestling veteran. For the past five summers, he has conducted alligator and snake shows at ReptileGardens, one of the oldest and most popular tourist attractions inthe Black Hills. To date he has wrestled nearly 1,500 alligators andhas never been bitten by one!

So how does one learn how to wrestle alligators? ReptileGardens conducts its own "Alligator U" for a budding reptilewrestler by first taping the alligator’s mouth shut. Dragging thereptile around by the tail, the trainee practices aligning the alligators head straight with its tail, sitting on its back, and rolling itover. After a month of training, the wrestler advances to untapingthe alligator’s mouth and soon is ready for conducting his firstshow before a public audience.

The show’s highlight occurs when the wrestler taps an alligatorlike "One-Eyed Willie" on the nose, opens its mouth, reachesinside and then quickly removes his hand before the gator’s mouthsnaps shut with a powerful force! The alligators are very strong fortheir size and extremely quick. Usually 4-5 years old, they weighapproximately 100 pounds and are about six feet long.

Because an alligator has only peripheral vision, the wrestlermust be straightly alignedbehind the alligator’s headbefore getting on its backand working his way up topull back on the head. If itshead is not pulled back, thealligator can roll underneathand bite the wrestler in thechest or face. Another danger is the risk of beinghit with the alligator’s powerful tail.

"When you first startout, you’re nervous becausethe alligator’s mouth is nolonger taped shut and youalso have to remember a 25-minute script," saysJacobs. "But once you getused to it, it’s pretty easy."

Kent credits his reptile experiences with sharpening his publicspeaking and presentation skills, which has helped him at Tech. Hecurrently is team leader of SDSM&T’s Mini-Baja vehicle project,an intercollegiate competition where student teams design, buildand race an off-road vehicle.

In addition to alligator wrestling, Jacobs and DeSmet performed snake shows for tourists four times daily for six days aweek throughout the summer. Over the past five summers, Jacobshas handled thousands of snakes during his 1500 snake shows.

Although "the new kid on the block" last summer, CraigDeSmet wrestled more than 250 alligators and still kept all his fingers! During one of his first shows, he had an alligatorencounter that was much too close for comfort—for both him andhis mother who was in the audience. While preparing to sit on thealligator’s back, Craig hesitated just long enough that the alligatorquickly flipped around and snapped at him. Although fortunatelynot injured, he gained a healthy respect for the speed and agility ofhis reptile opponent.

Another memorable incident reinforced the importance ofstaying focused and keeping his concentration, useful traits thatCraig applies to his SDSM&T classes. While holding the alligator’smouth open near the end of a show, Craig relaxed his concentration for a brief instant, and the alligator’s powerful jawssnapped shut on his hand! Popping the alligator’s head with hisother hand to get its mouth open, Craig withdrew his bleeding finger that quickly swelled to twice its normal size. With diehardperseverance, Craig finished the show and wrestled two more alligators that day.

Craig also handled hundreds of both poisonous and non-venomous snakes during the snake shows and the daily transporting of snakes into Reptile Gardens Sky Dome’s tropical rainforest setting. That’s quite an achievement for a guy who was soscared of snakes as a child that he wouldn’t even touch an earthworm!

on-traditional studentLinda Alexandersomehow manages tojuggle the many

demands of being both a singlemother and a successful student atSDSM&T. For this senior mathematics major, 1997 was a special summer. Linda was one ofonly eight students in the countryselected to participate in a NationalScience Foundation (NSF) undergraduate research project.

Alexander spent eight weeks lastsummer at the University ofMissour-Rolla conducting researchfor the NSF on "Parallel NumericalLinear Algebra." She was the onlynon-traditional student and one oftwo women who participated in thisproject. She received room andboard, a small stipend for travel, anda $2,000 fellowship grant to beawarded on the completion of theproject.

Dr. Edward Corwin, SDSM&TProfessor of Mathematics andComputer Science and Professor ofComputer Engineering, encouragedLinda to apply for the prestigiousNSF project. "It is gratifying to knowthat the great faculty at Tech provided me with the top-qualityeducation to compete with thenation’s best," said Alexander. "I’mproud to be a part of Tech’s continuing tradition of outstandingeducation."

The first few weeks of the eight-week project focused on mathnumerical methods and parallel processing, which is used to makesupercomputers run faster. The students formed three teams to workon project subtopics. Linda’s assignedsubtopic was "Parallel CholeskyFactorizations of Large, Sparse,Symmetric Matrices."

Linda teamed up with aUniversity of California-Berkeley student to research large matrices formodeling the physical properties of agiven system. The other studentsselected for this highly competitiveNSF project were from Swarthmore,Boston, Kansas City University, theUniversity of Missouri and theUniversity of Arkansas.

To facilitate a non-math major’sunderstanding of her research, Linda

describes the parallel processing workas modeling the widget rather thanactually building it in order to studythe heat, air flow, sound and otherphysical properties of the widget.For example, parallel Choleskyfactorizations can be used to modelthe sound around an airplane engineor the air flow over the fuselage.

After researching her topic,Linda began writing a computer program, first for one computer andthen for several processors. To solvevery large systems of equations,parallel programming is used todivide the data among severalprocessors and then running the program in parallel to speed up thecomputer processing time. When shefinished writing her program, Lindawrote a research paper on her findings and presented it to the NSFgroup. In November Alexander wasinvited to an undergraduate researchsymposium at the Argonne NationalLaboratories in Chicago to presenther team’s findings.

The hardest part of her NSFproject this summer was not thechallenging and essentially graduatelevel research work. Instead, the mostdifficult part for Linda was beingaway from her nine-year-old son,Derek, for eight weeks. This singlemother and her son are very close.They regularly go out to dinnertogether once a week, an ironcladcommitment that Linda keepsregardless of tests or studies pendingthe next day.

Growing up in California, Lindamoved to South Dakota in 1990 toraise her son in a slower-pacedenvironment and because of herfamily’s South Dakota roots. Afterliving in South Dakota for three

years, she decided to start college atSDSM&T. She was familiar with theuniversity because Dr. DarrellDickey, her late father and a physics professor at UCLA, was an alumnus(Physics ‘56) of Tech.

Scheduled to graduate in May,Linda plans to do actual sciencework for an insurance company orelse pursue a graduate degree tobecome a mathematics professor.She has been a tutor on campus forthe past three years and works tenhours a week at the Tech LearningCenter. She receives very high marksfrom the faculty and students familiar with her tutoring activities.Many students request to be assignedto Alexander when seeking tutorialassistance in mathematics.

She also has been activelyinvolved in the Alpha Sigma Lambdahonorary society for non-traditionalstudents and served as president ofthe SDSM&T chapter last year.

When asked what advice shewould give non-traditional studentsto help them succeed in balancingthe many competing demands ontheir time, Linda recommends getting to know other students rightaway and forming a study group.

"As soon as you walk in thedoor, get to know the people aroundyou," says Alexander. "Do not isolateyourself. You are not alone."

With non-traditional studentscomprising approximately 40% ofSDSM&T’s student population,Linda Alexander provides an inspiring example of success andachievement as a non-traditional student. Most importantly, she is amother devoted to her son.

Dr. John Dunn, SDSM&T ProfessorEmeritus of English, is well known oncampus for his love of teaching and hisstudents. For 32 years, this quintessentialprofessor dedicated his life to his careerand to helping students in whatever way hecould.

Dunn exemplifies the dedicated andgenerous faculty members who play anintegral role in continuing SDSM&T’s traditions of excellence. In addition to histime and talents, John Dunn’s benevolenceresulted in three endowments being established over the past few years. Withthe principal of these endowed funds protected from ever being spent, the earnings will be used for the purposes setforth by Dr. Dunn. In this manner, his generous intentions will be carried out forperpetuity.

Dr. Dunnestablishedthe FrancesM. DunnMemorialScholarship tohonor hismother uponher death in1994. Thisannual scholarship is awarded to a single motherworking towards a degree inInterdisciplinary Studies, among other criteria.

The Delta Sigma Phi FraternityMemorial Scholarship was established in1995 to honor active members and alumniof the SDSM&T Delta Sigma Phi chapterwho have passed away. Dr. Dunn hasserved as Advisor, Supervisor and Chair ofthe Alumni Central Board of Delta SigmaPhi at various times since 1964.

Later in 1995, Dr. Dunn established theJohn Dunn Endowment with a generousstock gift to the SDSM&T Foundation.The earnings are made available to theTech Learning Center for hiring studenttutors and to the College ofInterdisciplinary Studies for hiring work-study students or other necessary student employment.

Recently Dr. Dunn agreed to serve as aNational Co-Chair of SDSM&T’s VISION2000: Leadership for the Next Century capital campaign. His endorsement andleadership abilities will prove invaluable tothat campaign.

Throughout his distinguished career,Dr. Dunn has received numerous awards.His honors include the Standard OilOutstanding Teacher Award, thePresidential Award as OutstandingProfessor, and the Charles Bartel Award asOutstanding Delta Sigma Phi Advisor inthe U.S.

"Teaching has become the very essenceof my life, and--other than immediate family and a few close friends--my studentshave been the most important people in mylife," said Dr. Dunn. "What I give now isonly a small token of affection for them

and my appreciationof what theyhave given meover the past35 plus years."

The Scientific Knowledge for IndianLearning and Leadership (SKILL) programreceived the 1997 Presidential Award forExcellence in Science, Mathematics &Engineering Mentoring Programs, which included a $10,000 National Science Foundationgrant. Phillip Huebner, SKILL Director, attendedthe White House awards ceremony. SKILL alsoreceived a $6,672 grant from the South DakotaCommunity Foundation to support its NASAHonors Program.

SDSM&T won the Association forComputing Machinery (ACM) NorthCentral Regional Programming Contest andearned a berth in the ACM InternationalCollegiate Programming Championship thisFebruary. SDSM&T’s two teams won 1st and 6thin the regional competition hosted by Tech, inwhich 54 university teams competed. The winning Tech team members are Ed Mandy(CompSci senior); Ben Sutter (CompSci MSgraduate student); and Rune Torgersen (CEngsenior). The Tech team that won 6th placeincluded Dan Janni (CompSci senior); RichardJackson (CompSci senior); and Ben "Sonny"Andrick (CompSci, MS graduate student). Teamcoaches are Drs. Edwin Corwin and AntonetteLogar, Professors of Math and CompSci andComp. Engineering.

The Center of Excellence in AdvancedManufacturing and Production (CAMP) was officially kicked off during the South DakotaBoard of Regents recent meeting at Tech.CAMP will help companies solve design andmanufacturing problems through enterpriseteams and also help provide the best manufacturing education to Tech students. Four SDSM&T labs– Electrical &Computer Engineering, Advanced Composites,Advanced Manufacturing, and InjectionMolding— are active components. CAMP labequipment includes a Compression Test Frame,(50,000 and 100,000 lb.), MTS Dynamic TestFrames , Filament Winder, Computer NumericalControl Lathe, Coordinate MeasurementMachine, Vertical Machining Center, PrintedCircuit Prototyping Machine, SunWorkstations/Mentor Graphics Software, andInjection Molding Machine.

The Dow Chemical Company recently donated $71,000 to the Chem/ChemE Dept. forimproving the ChemE curriculum by integratingchemical engineering design through process simulation. Dow officials Deanna Bounds(ChemE ‘95) and Trudy Wells (ChemE ‘84)recently presented the check to President Gowenand Dr. James Munro, Chair of Chem/ChemEDept. Nearly 50 Tech alumni are employed byDow Chemical Co., including Gary Veurink(ChemE ‘72), Gen. Mgr. of Asset UtilizationResources, who also serves on the SDSM&TFoundation Trustees and Board of Directors.

The E.R. Stensaas MechanicalEngineering Laboratory in the Civil/MEBuilding was recently dedicated. ProfessorStensaas served SDSM&T for 36 years andwas primarily responsible for creating theMechanical Engineering program. His son,Mike Stensaas (ME ‘63), spoke on behalf ofthe family and his sister, Jane Fick, and herhusband, Gary, who also were present duringthe dedication. Brad Johnson, SDSM&TFoundation, described the tremendous support provided through the Classmate toClassmate Effort by Dr. Stensaas’s former students who established an endowment inhis honor in conjunction with a generous giftfrom the Stensaas family.

Dr. Jon Kellar, Assoc. Prof. of MetallurgicalEngineering, received the South DakotaBoard of Regents Award for Excellence inResearch. Kellar's research involves bondingbetween fibers and matrix material in composite materials with a specialty in thedevelopment of new materials. Dr. Kellar,who has received the prestigious designationas a National Science Foundation PresidentialFaculty Fellow, is a Rapid City native and aTech alumnus (BS MetE ‘84, MS MetE ‘86).

Barrick Goldstrike donated $25,000 to theMining Engineering Dept. for scholarships,improvement of SDSM&T’s computerizedmine design laboratory, and program development of the Mining EngineeringDept. Several SDSM&T alumni are currentlyemployed by Barrick Goldstrike.

BHP Minerals, a group of The Broken HillProprietary Company, Ltd., donated $20,000to SDSM&T’s Mining Engineering Dept. forstudent scholarships, enhancement ofeducation and improvement of instruction.This is the second year that BHP has provided substantial support to Tech.

Dr. Bruce Berdanier, Asst. Prof. ofCivil/Envir. Engineering, was elected vicepresident of the South Dakota WaterEnvironment Association at the annual conference held recently in Rapid City.

Tech Graduates in High Demand: Nearlyfifty companies recruited Tech students forplacement, summer internships and cooperative education during the 1997 CareerFair, the largest recruiting event in Tech history. Undergraduate cooperative educationand summer internships reached an all-timehigh last year, with 80% of Tech’s engineeringand science graduates having relevant workexperience upon graduation. The Rapid City Area Chamber ofCommerce honored SDSM&T with the1997 Granite Award during the Chamber’srecent annual meeting. The award is givenannually to a business or organization thatis an asset to the Rapid City area and a pillar of the community —one that is stable and "solid as granite"…hence thename "Granite Award."

In presenting the award to SDSM&TPresident Dr. Richard J. Gowen, DeweySmith, Chairman of the ChamberDiplomats, cited Tech’s significant economic, educational and cultural roles inthe Rapid City community. Smith notedthat SDSM&T is recognized as a nationalleader in science and engineering education.Starting salaries for Tech graduates rangefrom $33,500 for science to $37,000 forengineering majors.

"It is a tremendous honor for the university to be recognized as a partner inproviding economic development opportunities for our region," said Dr.Gowen. "We look forward to developingadditional partnerships to further strengthen the Rapid City area and tobringing students, visitors and conferenceattendees to the Black Hills area. Togetherwe can continue the traditions that have

Many exciting developments and innovative curricular programs have takenplace and continue to occur at Tech as aresult of implementing ReinvestmentsThrough Efficiencies in the budget process.

SDSM&T also plays a significant role inthe tourism industry. The Museum ofGeology attracts 70,000 visitors annually.The university has hosted or helped secureevents that will bring over 3,200 conferenceattendees to the Black Hills during thecurrent fiscal year alone.

The Devereaux Library film series andthe New Gallery provide cultural enrichment. Tech also serves as the State'sPatent and Trademark Depository. Thecampus also has served as an incubator tomulti-million dollar companies includingMagnum Diamond.

Previous recipients of the GraniteAward include Rapid City RegionalHospital, Rapid City Journal, the StateCement Plant and SCI. The piece of

granite for this year’s awardwas generously donated byRuth Ziolkowski from theCrazy Horse Memorial.

Dr. Larry Simonson, SDSM&TProfessor of Electrical Engineering,knew Anita when she was a student atTech. They also both worked at TexasInstruments one summer. He remembers Anita as a friendly, outgoingstudent who earned good grades andwas an honor student.

In the mid-70’s Tech’s student population was mostly male. Many ofAnita’s classes had only two or threefemale students. "She was one of thebarrier breakers for women," says Dr.Simonson. "She was very outgoing andalways chatty," he adds.

An Ethan High School graduate whoattended a one-room country school inHanson County, Anita stays in touchwith her South Dakota roots. Her mother, Jessie, lives in Ethan and herbrother, Orrin, farms near the smalleastern South Dakota community.Another brother, Lynn, lives in Tea. Herfamily usually reads Dilbert because ofher connections to it. However, she saysthey really don’t relate to urban cubiclelife.

The Alice attention hasn’t changedAnita’s relationships with her family andfriends. However, persons at work whoare aware of her Dilbert connectionoften go out of their way to approachher.

Her Dilbert connection hasn’tchanged her financial status. She doesn’treceive royalties from the Alice character.

"I haven’t made one penny fromAlice," jokes Freeman, "but it hasopened doors for me." She has heardthat an Alice doll will be on the marketsoon, but she hasn’t seen one yet.

"A person dreams about manythings happening in a lifetime, but thiswas never something you dream about,"says Freeman.

From the SDSM&T campus to theSunday comics, Anita Freeman bridgesthe connection between Dilbert andTech. On top of her successful corporate career, Anita leads a secondlife-- as Alice, the Dilbert coworker.

Not realizing alligator wrestlers also didsnake shows, Craig worked hard to overcomehis fear of snakes. Though nervous andshaking inwardly at first, Craig managed tostay calm and poised while talking to thecrowd with a 50-pound snake writhingaround his neck.

Both students credit their reptile experiences as improving their communication skills and confidence. Eachhas demonstrated an ability to be comfortable in challenging situations—whether sticking his hand in a hungry alligator’s mouth or wrapping a boa constrictor around his neck—while continuing to talk to the public in an

enthusiastic and poised manner."It has improved my social skills," says

However, everyone shouldstrive in their personal lives and careers toapply some reptile wrestling attributes--public speaking and presentation skills,organizational qualities, taking risks and facing challenges. Through the wide range of conferences andactivities hosted each year, SDSM&T bringsthousands of visitors to the Black Hills annually.By the time Fiscal Year 1998 ends on June 30,1998, SDSM&T will have hosted or have activelyhelped to host major conferences totaling over3,200 attendees.

These visitors have a total economic impactof over $1.5 million on the economy of theBlack Hills region. Most of these conferences areat least two or three days in length, some evenlonger.

Continuing the university’s tradition ofbringing visitors to the Black Hills, SDSM&Trecently won the bid to host the 1998 NationalConcrete Canoe Competition this summer. Thisthree-day event, which is sponsored by MasterBuilders, Inc. and the American Society of CivilEngineers (ASCE), will be held June 18-20, 1998.The competition is expected to draw 650 peoplefrom across the nation to the Black Hills.

Members of Tech’s ASCE Student Chapter,as well as several SDSM&T faculty and staff,worked diligently for several months on preparing the bid that succeeded in bringing theNational Concrete Competition to the BlackHills. During a site visit to Rapid City a fewmonths ago, representatives of Master Buildersand ASCE were very impressed with the localsupport, hospitality, facilities, and scenic beautyoffered by Rapid City and the Black Hills.

In addition to the National Concrete Canoe Competition, SDSM&T will be hosting theAmerican Indian Science and EngineeringSociety (AISES) National Science Fair this April.Between 800 and 1,000 students and educatorsare expected to attend this national science

competition featuring the top science and engineering projects of American Indian students throughout the nation.

Last September SDSM&T hosted the 25thAnnual Midwestern Mechanics Conference(MWMC), which has been held every two yearssince 1949 and hosted by some of the mostprestigious universities in the nation.Approximately 150 members representing thediverse disciplines of mechanics attended thisconference, including international visitors fromBelgium, Canada, China, France, Hungary, Koreaand Kuwait. Conference co-chairs were Drs.Christopher H.M. Jenkins and Dr. LidvinKjerengtroen, SDSM&T Associate Professors ofMechanical Engineering. Seven keynote presentations and over seventy technical paperswere presented during the three-day conference,as well as a symposium by the Institute forMechanics and Materials.

Last October the National Council of SpaceGrant Directors Annual Conference was hostedby the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium(SDSGC) in Rapid City and coordinated by theSDSGC office on the Tech campus. Accordingto SDSGC Outreach Coordinator Linda Allen,approximately 100 people attended the event.Conference participants included space grantdirectors and their education program officersfrom all 52 consortia, NASA Space GrantFellows, and representatives of NASA’sEducation Division and various NASA Centers,as well as state and federal officials.

In early December SDSM&T hosted the 3rdBiennial Land Surveying Conference in whichapproximately 75 surveying professionals fromacross the state participated. Dr. M.R. Hansen,

SDSM&T Associate Professor of CivilEngineering, served as moderator for the conference.

On March 6, 1998, SDSM&T will host the34th Annual Concrete Conference. This annualevent features presentations by national and localspeakers focusing on the latest research and technologies applicable to the concrete industry.Last year 140 people participated in the ConcreteConference, and a similar number of attendeesare expected at this year’s event.

Last July the National Society of ProfessionalEngineers (NSPE) Annual Convention was heldin Rapid City. This six-day meeting brought 1200people to the Black Hills. SDSM&T workedclosely with the South Dakota EngineeringSociety in organizing or hosting various NSPEconvention activities during the week.

Officials of the Rapid City Convention andVisitors Bureau (CVB) estimate that each visitorto the Black Hills spends an average of $120 perday on lodging, food, entertainment, shoppingand other expenses. The above events representa combined total of 3,215 attendees and 12,715visitor days. Using the CVB’s spending estimates,these visitor days result in an economic impact ofover $1.5 million to the Rapid City and BlackHills area economy—and that is just within the current fiscal year!

Through its active outreach efforts, SouthDakota Tech is an effective ambassador for theBlack Hills and South Dakota. Over the yearsSDSM&T-related events not only bring thousands of visitors to the region, but alsopump millions of dollars into the local economy!
