Adeep sense of belonging comes from feeling at home in our environment.UTP aspires to instil this attachment amongst our staff and students in order to help the university scale greater heights and achieve more success in the coming future. The University has always focused on raising the bar andproviding the necessary support to help our staff and students outdo themselves.

In this edition, we are very proud of the achievements our UTP family has attained. Being awarded a US Patent Grant adds another feather in UTP’scap; as did garnering a national award for Intellectual Property, which spoke volumesof thequalityofUTP’sstaffandstudents.Wehope thesesuccessesmarks the beginning of a new journey for UTP in the area of Intellectual Propertyrights.

The past quarter had been filledwith various achievements, whichwere notlimited to academics alone. Various community outreach programmes byboth staff and students alike and wins at numerous sporting events provided balanceto theUTP listofaccolades.UTPhasalwaysbeenconcernedaboutcontributing back to society and this is evident in The University’s seriouscommitment to help strengthen economically the Kg. Aji community throughvarious engagement programmes. UTP also strongly supports similar CSRprogrammes and encourages efforts to extend such initiatives beyond national borders. On the academic front, UTP has always endeavoured to bringillustrious speakers through UTP’s Public Lecture Series to help share newtechnologies and knowledge to the locals, such as the one on “Social Innovation”and“WaterIssues”recently.

We hope the UTP community are inspired by the various initiatives that have been undertaken by various members of the UTP family thus far and may these news and stories give you ideas for a new endeavour that you will not only undertake, butalsochampion.

Perhaps your story will be the one we will see in the next edition!

UTP, Our Home

“UTP, Our Home” was the theme of the 2014 Vice-Chancellor’s Townhall which was recently held on theafternoonof18thSeptemberatUTP’sChancellorHall.Atthisannual event, the Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, sharedwithUTPstaff thewayforwardforUTP.Oneimportant fact that was emphasised was that UTP is committed to taking up a primary role in becoming a leader in Technology Education and will be looking to introduce centres forCreativityandInnovationinthefuture.

At this event, Datuk Rahim shared the findings from theone-month Star Action Lab held earlier this year.More than150 people from different groups were syndicated during the lab session which studied the UTP Human Resource Ecosystem in order to attract and retain the kind of talent needed to realise UTP’s goal of becoming a premieruniversity. The labopenlydiscussedandreviewedthepainsand grievances of various stakeholders with the aim of making the necessary required improvements. Variousbenchmarking and syndication exercises were also conducted in order to understand the best practices of other model organisations. The labalso looked towards radical, practicalandinnovativesolutionstoachievethetargetedBigResults.

The lab proposed four (4) practical philosophies which are expected to help drive UTP in achieving its aspiration, as follows :1.Value your own worth, i.e. discover success through elevationofindividual’svalueandself-worth;2.InclusiveInstitutionalSupport,i.e.institutionalsupportwith adequateresources,integratedsystemandperformance- based rewards & recognition;

3.Accelerate&RecognisePassion,i.e.actualisationofone’s growth and passion; and4.Harmonious Living Environment, i.e. work-life balance through vibrant surroundings and better engagement & communication.

After that Datuk Rahim goes on to explain the “UTP, My Home” concept that UTP is now embarking on as the university gears itself to go to the next level after successfully becoming a reputable international university. This conceptis meant to position UTP as a CARING organisation which provides a caring, nurturing and harmonious living environmentforUTPstaff.

This idea was developed with the philosophy of utilising the individual’s passion to fuel the realization of the institution’saspiration. The objective is to provide a conduciveenvironment to boost internal networking by the establishment of a staff center, children’s nursery, and relevant billboards. The actions are designed to address current issues and at the same time motivate staff to enhance cohesiveness and productivitytowardsacceleratingtheirpassion.

The last item shared that afternoon was the Fundamental Agenda Framework for Sustainability which is currently being developed.Thekeyfocusitemsofthesaidframeworkareasfollows:1. Forminghighperformanceculturewhichismeantto support and nurture the development of “One-UTP” culture; 2. ThedevelopmentofAspirationalLeadershipatalllevels; and3. EffectiveBranding.

Interview with Tan Sri Datuk Ir (Dr) Ahmad Zaidee Laidin(Member of UTP Academic Advisory Council)

UTP: Past, Present and Future

Academician Tan Sri Datuk Ir (Dr) Hj Ahmad Zaidee Laidin FASc, is an active member of UTP’s Academic Advisory Council since 2010. The Council, which was established in February 2003, provides guidance and strategic direction for the development of the University, from international collaboration to staff development and consultancy - to be in tandem with the University’s vision and mission. In this interview, Tan Sri shared his perspectives and some insights on UTP’s progress and development.

On Leadership and ProgressTan Sri Datuk Ir (Dr) Hj Ahmad Zaidee Laidin said that he was very impressed with the University’s achievementsespecially inthelastfiveyears.Henotedthatthechangeofleadership did not halt the progress but instead the University hascontinuedtodevelopandbuildfromstrengths.Theteamis focused, passionate and enthusiastic about achieving the vision.

“UTP is always forward looking. At every AACmeeting, theUniversity’s management ensures continuity and progress.Theteamalwaysaskstherightquestionsandendeavourstofindanswers to thesequestions.”TanSri saidhenoted thatwith each accomplishment, the University strides forward by raisingthebars.

On Graduates Employability Tan Sri said that where graduates employability is concerned, according to records and statistics, there was already evidence of success to indicate that UTP “has arrived”.Hequoted that inTheStar, according toMEFSalarySurveyfor Executives 2010 it was revealed that 68% of the companies surveyed named communication skills as the top quality required in job applicants, followed by workingexperience (67%), interpersonal skills (56.2%) and passionandcommitment(55.7%).

He pointed out that English language is an important language in business and in petroleum industry. This wassupported by a statement made by Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers President that the young ones who could not communicate in English were unable to negotiate the best deals inbusiness transactionsor investments.Thestandardof English also affects the quality of the public sector ascivil servants have to interact with international citizens and thebusinessworldaswellasarticulateMalaysia’sstandonissues to the international community. These includenegotiationsonimportantissuessuchastradeagreements.

According to Tan Sri, there are two areas that UTP has great advantage over other institutions of higher learning. One islanguage skill and the other is experience via the 8-month internship programme. Perhaps, UTP students should alsomaster other foreign languages to enhance their marketability like Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic, and even Russian bearing in mind the oil and gas industry spreads out to all cornersoftheearth.

”“Always learn to unlearn

and relearn. After all, a technological curriculum only lasts for five years. And the world is constantly changing. Expand your network and find opportunities to extend your portfolio and work.

Tan Sri also proposes for the University to take active steps to measure how far the “well-rounded graduates” vision has been achieved in other areas besides language use and workingexperience.

On Postgraduate Education According to Tan Sri, a study conducted in USA has shown that people with higher degrees command higher salaries. There was a direct association between unemployment and lower(orwithout)academicqualification.

In Malaysia the number of professionals who are pursuing professional qualificationand/orpostgraduate studies is stillconsiderablylower.InDenmark, hesaid, thosewithIndustrialPhD perform better at work compared to those with conventional PhD degrees. This is because those withIndustrial PhDs have to Business modules alongside the technicalcontent.

Tan Sri shared that with his Engineering degree, he probably wouldgetbyhisworkwithintheconfineofhisknowledgeandeducation. Butwith aMaster’s degree hewas appointed tobecome a director of a company and he was able to handle thecomplexitiesofmodernand internationalbusiness.MBAfor example is a very useful tool especially for managers and leaders. He quipped that, “Otherwise it is always financialpeople that will get inflated perks.” Many successfulcompanies in the United States and Japan, are led by engineers with business qualifications that run theorganisations.

On University Ranking Tan Sri congratulated UTP for its outstanding and unprecedented achievement finding internationalfootingintheprestigiousQSWorldRanking.Hesaid,“Wewillonly know where we stand when we are measured against something or someone.”UTPhasbeenput through variousassessments and ranking standards like QS World Ranking, SETARA and D-SETARA. However, Tan Sri gave a word ofcaution, “We cannot be too focused in ranking that we forgot about the real business. Competition and evaluation shouldbe taken in good stride. Sometimes, it is actually aboutmeetingtherulesofthegame.”

TanSriquoted that inCanada,Chinaand India, evaluationsand assessments sometimes were taken with “a pinch of salt”.Nevertheless, theShanghaiJiaoTongWorldUniversityRanking, for example was started because the University itselfwantedtofocusonimprovingitsareasofspecificneedsinnaturalsciences.TheShanghaiAcademicRankingof theWorld Universities, has emerged to be one of the three most influentialuniversityrankingsintheworld.

On Patents and Papers (Inventor versus Author)Tan Sri also said that “In the past, for the academics, it was either publish or perish”. However since the United StatesSenate enacted the Bayh-Dole Act in 1980, having registered patents and commercialisation are two areas accounted for in any ranking system. When patents areregistered there will be many claimants and disputes. Tominimize the hassle, Singapore he said, outsourced the Intellectual Property verification to Australia. As such, theirfocus and efforts are geared towards speedy production of patents. Malaysia, (MyIPO), however verifies the patents

themselves, and this may take longer time but with better understanding.JapanworksinthesamewayasMalaysia.

There are also issues and dilemma over patents versus papers or inventors versus authors especially in the context of higher learning institutions. TanSri said that there shouldbe a balance between the two. Getting published maysometimes infringe on patents’ potential. As such, a patentapplicationmustbefiledBEFOREtheinventionispublished.

On Talents“Talentsbeget talents”,saidTanSri.HavingNobel laureates, for example would inspire, motivate and cultivate better productivity.Otherhighqualitytalentsfromallovertheworld, would want to work with them. UTP has a few bright starsfrom abroad. Such talents could be effective magnets toattract more stars to join the University. Tan Sri said,“More academics and scientists should pitch for their specialisations to explore more opportunities for inventions orpublications.”

Tan Sri said that in Singapore, when an international talent is identified and invited to join a learning institution, he/shewouldmoreoftenthannot,bringonboardhis/herentireteam.However, according to Tan Sri if the talent leaves, he/she mayalsotakehis/herentireteamwithhim/her.UTPneedstoexploreothermodels,albeitmoresustainableones.

On Words of WisdomTanSri said, “Always learn to unlearn and relearn. After all,a technological curriculumonly lasts for five years. And theworld isconstantlychanging.Expandyournetworkandfindopportunitiestoextendyourportfolioandwork.”

He shared that being a Senior Fellow at Academy of Sciences Malaysia has not stopped him from venturing to workwithotherassociations.Heisstill intheCouncilof theInstitution of Engineers Malaysia and is serving in the Board of Appeal for the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Heencouraged more UTP researchers to explore working with International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (www.iiasa.ac.at), IAP, the global network of scienceacademies (www.interacademics.net) and The WorldAcademyofSciences(www.twas.org),justtonameafew.

On Chancellor of the UniversityAs far as I am aware, no other Chancellor of a University takes the trouble to chair the Academic Advisory Council every year, nor give a Chancellor’s Talk annually to thestudents. Clearly, UTP is perhaps the only one in theworldthathasthisprivilege.

On Hopes and Aspiration“UTP can be the think tank or reference point for the economiccounciland for thecountryonoilandgas. Ithasthe resources, the expertise and the experience to provide counsel and advice not only for PETRONAS but for the industryandthecountry.Forthat,UTPhastobemorevisiblein its efforts, nudge with the right people and fraternity, and strengthenitstransformationandacademicpositioning.”

Ending the interview, Tan Sri said that” By being a thought leader in oil and gas, the University has to be mindful of its responsibilityespeciallyinmattersconcerningtheenvironment.”

Taking Goodwill Beyond Boundaries

The recent incidents that happened to Malaysia especially the tragedies involving MH370 and MH17 have taught us many lessons including the need to have strong ties with other countries.Thespiritofservingcommunitiesshouldtranscendbeyond local boundaries and it is important to instill this spirit earlyinouryouths.

With the aspiration to serve communities beyond boundaries, the Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (RACUTP) had embarked on the International GoodwillProgramme.Thisprogrammehadbeenconductedin several times over the past 10 years beginning in Pune, India (2004), Singapore (2006), Chiang Rai, Thailand (2007), Jakarta, Bandung & Yogyakarta in Indonesia (2008), Kochi & Coimbatore in India (2009) and Siem Reap in Cambodia (2010and2013). This year saw17UTP studentswhoweremostly club members accompanied by their 2 advisors head to to Central Manila, Philippines from 10th to 15th September 2014 to engage with the underprivileged children at their schoolandvillage.Theprogrammealsowas joinedbyUTPstudents of various nationalities from the following countries : Brunei,Mozambique,MyanmarandSyria.

During the project, the UTP students spent time with the underserved children at Ipo Dam Elementary School to teach them English, Mathematics and Art. RACUTP also donatedover 200 stationery sets to the children.Once classeswereover, the participants served the school children lunch and playedgameswiththem.

At the Happyland Village in the district of Tondo Manila, RACUTP conducted another project for over 300 underprivileged children who were living in the slum areas.“Once we had arrived, we were shocked to see the villagers living in slum areaswhich had garbage strewn everywhere.

This was truly an eye opener for all of us,” said Mong Zhi Ling, the project director of RACUTP. In collaboration with Rotaryand Rotaract Clubs of Chinatown Manila and the University of Santo Thomas, medical check-up, hygiene lessons, meal serving, stationery donation as well as games and origami for thechildrenwerealsoconducted.

“In achieving our mandate to serve the communities regardless of race and nationality, we also realised how lucky we are living in Malaysia and it has made us more grateful of our good fortune, after comparing the fate of the underprivileged pupils in other parts of the world,” said Zulkarnan Abdul, RACUTP Club Advisor who is also the ManagerofCorporateServicesatUTP.
