President’s messageby Jason Clark

What would you turn if you could only

turn one more time? If you knew

something was going to happen that

would prevent you from ever turning

again what would you make? A bowl,

a pen, a box, a hollow form?

This is essentially the premise of my

favorite book. “The Last

Lecture” by Randy Pausch with Jeffrey

Zaslow. Carnegie Mellon

professor Randy Pausch was invited to

participate in a lecture series

where professors were asked to give a

lecture as if it were their

last. If you could give one last lecture

on the topic of your

choosing what would it be? In Ran-

dy’s case however the premise wasn’t

far fetched at all; he had recently been

given a terminal diagnosis –

pancreatic cancer and was given mere

months to live.

Rather than sulk and look to be pitied

he set a plan into motion and

began to prepare his last lecture. His

lecture was entitled “Really

achieving your childhood dreams” and

was presented on September 18,

2007. Randy’s childhood dreams in-

cluded being in zero gravity,

playing in the NFL, authoring an article

in the World Book

Encyclopedia, being Captain Kirk, win-

ning the big stuffed animals at

amusement parks and becoming a Dis-

ney Imagineer and over the course of

75 minutes he presented his lecture to

an overflowing lecture hall.

It was the perfect combination of

touching, funny, inspiring and

poignant with plenty of lessons

learned and a few noteworthy twists

Treasurer Report:

thrown in.

The response to his lecture was overwhelming, a video of the lecture on Youtube

has amassed over 16 million views and the book “The Last Lecture” was written as

a follow-up to the lecture with additional detail, more stories, and even more les-

sons. I’ve given copies of the book as gifts on numerous occasions and I keep an

audio version of the lecture on my phone to listen to every couple of months. My

family and I regularly listen to an audio book version of “The Last Lecture”

on road trips and I’m not ashamed to admit that it makes me tear up nearly ev-

ery time I listen to it. If I had one last chance to turn I don’t really know what I’d

make. My first instinct would be to make the best hollow form I could possibly

make, possibly one of my Torus forms. Thinking about it some more I think I’d pre-

fer to borrow a page out of Randy’s book and instead spend that one last time turn-

ing with my kids. Whatever they want to turn, it’s completely up to them as long as

we do it together.

Beginner’s Corner:

New turners often overlook important factors to enjoying woodturning: wood selection. Whether we’re purchasing wood, or picking it up off the side of the road wood selection can be veryimportant – not only to the final product but also to the turner.Purchasing wood can be very tempting. Exotic woods like Cocobolo, African Blackwood, and Purpleheart or domestic woods simply not available locally like Maple burl and Holly can be fan-tastic to use and produce exceptional results but they can really put a dent in thebudget if used on a consistent basis. There’s certainly a time and a place to purchase wood but I’d advise against it as a pure beginner. The likelihood of failure is too great to risk ruining a blank thatyou’ve paid hard earned money for.Sourcing wood locally is the preferred option and is almost always considerably cheaper than pur-chasing wood at retail. You may notice I didn’t say it’s free. In my opinion there’s no such thing as free wood. There’s usually gas and labor and wood sealer and other associated expenses but $20 worth of gas and wood sealer and a couple hours of my time will often yield me enough wood to fill my truck. Many local turners are willing to share when they have excess or topoint you in the right direction.Ruining a piece of Mesquite salvaged from a firewood pile is much easier on the wallet and less damaging to the psyche than trashing a $80 block of Rosewood or that natural edge Maple burl that you just had to have. Many experienced turners are more than happy to produce themajority of their work with woods only available locally. Mesquite, Acacia, Eucalyptus, Sissoo, Desert Ironwood, Olive, Carob, African Sumac, and more are all available on a regular or semi-regular basis locally and usually at a minimal cost. However you source your wood it’s important that you pay attention to the wood. Cracks and voids and such can be very interesting to look at and can produce exceptional results but they need

to be dealt with carefully. Multiple turners have died or been very seriously injuredwhen wood with major defects broke apart on the lathe. Sometimes these defects are easily visible and can be avoided entirely. Other times the defects may be hidden under the bark or within the blank itself and may present issues that only advanced turners are equippedto deal with. If you are in doubt about what to do or even whether or not to proceed with a particular piece of wood your best option is to stop the lathe and seek help or advice from an experienced turner.Doing so can potentially save your life. by Jason Clark

Looking back at 2013 I did not turn enough. I did not give away enough woodturning gifts. Matter of fact I ran out of time to turn any gifts for peo-ple for Christmas 2013. There is wood both in log form and roughed out that is destined for certain people. A friend who lives in Christopher Creek gave me walnut from her property. Her “thank you” bowl is roughed out, but not finished. I have several large mesquite logs waiting to become future center piece bowls for fam-ily. Yes, I did two large production runs (not my favorite thing to do) and two large pen orders. In 2014 I am looking forward to attending the National Symposium in June. It is an indoor event, thank god for Phoenix. It is a great opportunity to see many fantastic demonstrations. I encourage you to invite a friend to the nationals this year. I have two family members who turn and have not been able to talk either into attending a club meeting. Despite me telling them what they are missing. Every time I see them I tell them, what great opportunity they will be missing if they don’t attend the nation-als in June. Don’t let that happen to you. I also am looking forward to the Febru-ary Trent Bosch demonstration. He is one of the best I have seen in person. Then I present my Manta Ray Bowl in March. I also look forward to turning pens with my daughters for their teachers in May. Come to the club meetings to support the club, invite a friend and most importantly, “Get out and turn”!Chip

The annual AAW symposium is the highlight of the woodturning year, meeting in different locations throughout the United States. It has become the most attended woodturning event worldwide. Each symposium features three days of woodturning demonstrations and meetings, led by several talented experts:

Internationally known woodturners The highest quality woodturning instructors Knowledgeable local talent

Multiple rotations are held simultaneously so attendees have many different types and styles of woodturning demon-strations available. Many of the demonstrations are held multiple times so the attendee has the opportunity to attend sessions they may have missed. Each symposium has had a unique flavor, but most of them have the following features: A rotation schedule of more than 100 classroom-type demonstrations and panel discussions, hosted by the world's best woodturning professionals. An instant gallery like no other on earth, with up to three pieces submitted by each attendee. A Saturday night ban-quet. The Friday Special Interest Night, where like-minded turners get together for some fun. An auction of tools, wood, and fine woodturnings. Funds from the auction fund scholarships for woodturning education. The largest woodturning tradeshow anywhere, including tool and lathe manufacturers, vendors of wood and other materials, and suppliers related to woodturning.
