2.2 Groundwater Sampling

IS0 5667-1 4: 1998

Groundwater in the well casing and in close proximity to the well is not considered representative of the general groundwater at a given location. In order to ensure that the groundwater samples extracted from the monitoring bores were representative of the water held in the subsurface strata and not water held stagnant in the borehole casing, it was necessary to evacuate (purge) the monitoring bores prior to sampling. A common procedure is to pump a well until between 3 and 6 bore volumes have been removed as cited in Fib Scientifics' SOP No. EM234 and as recommended in numerous technical publications (e.g. Marsh and Lloyd 1980 and Boateng 1987). The purged volumes were calculated on-site from the measured static water levels (measured using an electronic well dipper) and the total depth of the bores. Ground water wells were purged using Waterra tubing and pumps prior to sampling, removing greater than three times the volume of water in the well. To avoid cross contamination between boreholes, different sampling tubes were used for sampling each of the groundwater wells.

All samples were returned to the laboratory, and stored between 2-8°C.

laboratory has accreditation since 1998 (with INAB) and it is the policy of the laboratory to achieve and maintain a high standard of quality consistent with client's requirements in all aspects of the work carried out within the laboratory.

I S 0 17025 is the standard that testing laboratories should meet if they wish to demonstrate that they operate a quality system, are technically competent, and are able to generate technically valid results. IS0 17025 incorporates all those requirements of IS0 9000 that are relevant to the scope of testing services that are covered by the laboratory's quality system. Thus a laboratory that complies with I S 0 17025 will therefore also operate in accordance with the quality management requirements of IS0 9000.

3.2 Inter-laboratory Proficiency Schemes To ensure the accuracy of the analytical testing we participate in several external proficiency schemes. The ongoing competence of the laboratory and its staff is assessed by participation in various inter-laboratory proficiency testing schemes, such as Aquacheck, CONTEST, RTC, QWAS and the EPA scheme organised for environmental laboratories throughout Ireland.

3.3 Control Chain of Custody As part of the Quality System in place at Fitz Scientific, measures are taken to ensure a controlled chain of custody of samples. An outline of the chain of custody is given overleaf.

5.0COMMENT

Results of groundwater samples taken as part of this Quarterly investigation are provided in Table 4.2. For the purposes of this assessment, groundwater parameters are compared to the European Communities Environmental Objectives (Groundwater) Regulations, 2010 (S.I. No.9 of 2010) and where parameters are not specified in this statute, results are compared to the €PA Interim Guideline Values (IGV's) as detailed in the EPA report "Towards Setting Guideline Values for the Protection of Groundwater in ireland.

5.1 Comment on Exceedance of Groundwater Threshold Values (GTV's) and Inteh Guideline Values (IGV's)

5.1.1 Ammonia-#; G W exceedance in monitoring wells GIA, M A P , G4A, G4AP, GSAP, tO8A and GfO8AP

Elevated levels of Ammonia4 were detected in wells GIA, GIAP, G4A, G4AP, GSAP, 108A and G I 08AP recording concentrations of 3.60, 7.58, 11.37,0.745,44.36, 3.57 & 6.99 mg/L as N, respectively exceeding the GTV of 0.1 36 rnglL.
