  • Quarter to Semester Conversion Guide

  • Quarter to Semester Conversion Guide Background In 2012, The Ohio State University transitioned from a quarter calendar to a semester calendar, with the first semester being held in the Summer Term of 2012. Following the change in calendars, a course conversion search tool was made available online that could be used to determine equivalencies between quarters era courses and the new semesters era courses. Two years after the calendar switch, the conversion search tool was removed from our web site and was permanently replaced by this Quarter to Semester Conversion Guide. The course equivalency information found within this Quarter to Semester Conversion Guide was collected throughout the University’s calendar conversion process, and the equivalencies listed herein are final as of July 3, 2014.

Quarters Era Course Descriptions All historical course descriptions for The Ohio State University are available online via the University Registrar’s web site at: http://registrar.osu.edu/scheduling/bulletins_old.asp.

University Classification and Course Numbering System The system of numbering courses offered by the University is as follows: 1000-1099: Non-credit courses for orientation, remedial, or other non-college level experiences. These are courses taken in addition to a program’s graduation requirements. 1100-1999: Basic courses providing undergraduate credit, but not to be counted on a major or field specialization in any department. Courses at this level are beginning, required, or elective courses that may be prerequisites to higher-level courses. 2000-2999: Intermediate courses providing undergraduate credit that may be counted toward a major or field of specialization. 3000-3999: Upper-level courses providing undergraduate credit that may be counted toward a major or field of specialization. 4000-4999: Advanced-level courses providing undergraduate credit that may be counted toward a major or field of specialization. Graduate students may enroll in and receive graduate credit for 4000-level courses outside their own graduate program. 5000-5999: Courses that are regularly offered for both graduate and undergraduate credit, and sometimes for foundational coursework or research credit at the professional level. These courses provide credit that may be counted toward an undergraduate major or field of specialization. 6000-6999: Foundational coursework and research providing graduate or professional credit. 7000-7999: Intermediate coursework and research providing graduate or professional credit. 8000-8999: Advanced coursework and research providing graduate or professional credit.
