An Isolation Project
Fine Art & Photography
Theme: Isolation and connection
In the current World crisis, during the corona virus: Covid-19 pandemic, people are asked stay at home to avoid spreading and/or contracting the virus. Children are being educating remotely at home, via online platforms, adults are working from home where they can. Some people are going to work because their jobs are key to medical services, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, care workers etc, or they work in supermarkets, or are involved in the manufacture and production of food, such as farmers, food factories and hauliers. Teachers also, are in schools on a rota basis to look after the children of key workers.
But for you, you are at home. Away from your friends, but with family. You are experiencing a moment in history, something “unprecedented” within our time.
You are safely isolated from the rest of world, but you are still connected.
My question is, how is it for you?
Task 1 – Write down your thoughts▪ Where are you?▪ Who are you with?▪ What do you see?▪ What is important to you at the
moment?▪ What routines have you adapted?▪ What activities are you doing?▪ How are you communicating with
people?▪ How are you feeling?
Task 2 – Record with photography
Look at your answers from Task 1.
Create a collage of photography from around your home/close surrounding area which reflects the things you have noted down.
Consider composition of your photos; natural framing, rule of thirds, backgrounds and lighting.
Can you edit your photos to make them more interesting/intriguing? Perhaps turn them to black and white, or crop them. Add simple filters to bring out shadows and vibrancy of colours.
You do not need to print your photos if you haven’t the facility to do so, just import them into a PowerPoint like this.
Some photographic collages created during lockdown
Task 3 – Fine Artists only -Observe by drawing
Draw from things which surround you. Favourite things, people, areas in your home, nature. Use your photography for ideas. Your drawings could be in pencil, pen or you might even decide to experiment with tea/coffee staining or painting.
• Draw four:– A view which includes a window. It might be through the
window looking out or looking in. Perhaps someone is sat in the window?
– An object which is of significance to you– A person (could be a self portrait), this might be a member of
your family, reading in a chair, or working from home– A natural form(s) this might be something collected on your
daily exercise. Or a tree you can see from your window
You can either do four drawings of each of the above, or complete four drawings on the same theme, i.e. 4 window drawings
Task 3 – Photographers only - TypologiesA selection of images of the same type.
• Take photos on the themes of (choose at least 4 themes, do them all if you wish!):
– Windows– Lines– Reflections– Light and shadow– The mundane– My day– Isolation– Communication
How you interpret these words is up to you.Select your best images and create collages on each theme, with between 4 & 9 photos for each. Give a slide for each of your collections.
Task 3 for Photographers Continued…• Reflect, which was your best theme of
photos?
• And out of these photos, is there anything that you can do to edit them?
• Show the process of editing the photos (smart phone photography is completely acceptable in the absence of another camera. There are many online apps to edit, such as Snapseed, Light Room etc.)
• Show a before and after of your edited photo and explain why you did this. How did it improve/change the photo
• How could you improve your photography?
• Plan an “improvement shoot” on the same theme and go take some more photographs. Display your best work. Edit if needed.
Task 4 - InspirationFind artwork/photography which link to the theme Isolation and Connection, which YOU find inspirational 1. Create a moodboard of a collection of images from a variety of artists2. Choose one artist/photographer to focus in on and create a research page on this artist.Again, no need to print anything off, you can create one ppt slide for your collection of images and a second slide (or more) of images by your chosen artist. Describe, analyse and evaluate this artists work. Why have you chosen this artist in particular? How do they inspire you?3. Create a practical response to this artist
On the next few slides, are some artists/photographers who you may wish to use.Bare in mind also, that Fine Artists can be inspired by Photographers and vice versa

Exploring Isolation By Ben Zank
“The images represent an ongoing experience of emotions that I feel, the most recent being isolation and a longing to connect with another human being.”
This is Kim Byungkwan from Seoul, Korea. What I would like to express through my work is very simple. I am trying to bring out strangeness from familiarity.

2. A collage of photos of your surroundings, inside and outside
3. ObservingA. Fine Art – 4 drawing observations
B. Photography – at least 4 typology collages, plus a planned photoshoot to make improvements to one of these themes. Show any editing
