KFRI, established in 1975, is one of the seven institutions underthe Kerala State Council for Science, Technology andEnvironment (KSCSTE). Dur-ing this short period KFRI hasbecome one of the pioneering institutions in tropical forestryresearch. The Institute has been conducting research on allaspects of forestry, wildlife biology, wood science and technologyand socio-economics that are vital to the development of forestrysector in Kerala State.

It is a great honour for KFRI to host the International confe-rence on �Quality timber products of teak from sus-tainable forestmanagement� during 2-5 December 2003 in the land of teak,Kerala which pioneered the plantation tech-nology for teak andestablished the first teak plantation during 1842.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

India, the hosting country of the Conference, with a total landarea of 3.287 million km2, is the seventh largest country in theworld, situated in South Asia. With diverse climatic conditionsuch as alpine temperate in the north, desert in the west andhot and humid tropical climate in the south. India is a union of28 States and 7 Union Territories. There are 18 official languageswith 1652 dialects with English as a main link language. With anestimated annual growth of about 1.6%, the population wasestimated to be more or less 1 billion in the year 2001.

Kerala State, (8o 18��12o 48� N; 74o 52��77o 22� E) situatedalong the south-western coast of Peninsular India, is a regionendowed with rich tropical forests and wildlife. The capital ofKerala State is Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). The southernpart of the Western Ghats lies along the eastern side of the State.These hill ranges which harbour diverse types of tropical forestsare considered as one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in theWorld. Besides conservation forestry the State is also accreditedof pioneering attempts in plantation forestry. The world�s firstteak plantation established at Nilambur, Kerala, during 1846 isstill maintained in the memory of Mr. H.V. Conolly for hispioneering effort.

Kerala State is also known for spices (cardamom, cloves, blackpepper, nutmeg, etc.), coffee, tea, cashew and fisheries, coconutfringed landscapes and scenic backwaters and lagoons.Numerous famous temples, mosques (India�s first mosque issituated Kodungallore, 41 km away from Thrissur) and churches,a variety of traditional art forms like Kathakali and Mohiniyattamclosely interwoven with the social life of people, depict theglorious cultural heritage of the State.

Venue

The conference venue is Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi� located in central part of Kerala State in the midst of tropicalforests with a scenic beauty, which attracts a large number oftourists throughout the year. The nearest city is Trichur (Thrissur)(18 km), the cultural capital of Kerala which is well connectedby road and train from Chennai (Madras), Bangalore, Kochi(Cochin) and Coimbatore cities. The new Cochin (Kochi)International Airport at Nedumbassery is only 60 km awaywhile another accessible domestic airport is at Coimbatore, TamilNadu (100 km). ClimateThe weather in and around Peechi during December is verypleasant with an average temperature of 25o C.

Official Language of the Conference

The Official language of the Conference is English. Only Englishis used by the speakers in all the sessions and field excursion ofthe Conference and no translators will be available.

PAPER PRESENTATION

Oral PresentationIn addition to keynote addresses, oral presentation includescountry/status reports, plenary papers and those papers whichdirectly address the theme of the Conference, newly emergingissues and research breakthroughs. Each technical session beginswith a plenary lecture of 30- minute duration, followed by otherpapers of 20- minute presentation. LCD projector, slideprojector, overhead projector � facilities will be available for thepresentations

How to prepare papers

Title: The title should indicate contents precisely and be nomore than 10-15 words long. Do not use �all caps� in titles.

Contact information: Name, complete mailing address, tele-communication number, E-mail address and website of allauthors.

Abstract : The abstract is an abbreviated, accuraterepresentation of the paper. It should be no more than 300words long, summarize the essential information of the paperin lay terms and be able to stand on its own. A maximum of 10keywords should be identified.

Text : The paper should contain an introduction, materials andmethods (when relevant), results, discussion, conclusion, andliterature cited. Papers should have a maximum length of 3000words and 10 pages (if 60 lines per page, 75 characters per

line), including tables and bibliography. Standard symbols formeasurements and the International System for units (S.I.) shouldbe used. Abbreviations should be spelled out at the firstoccurrence with the abbreviation, in parentheses, immediatelyfollowing.

Each illustration (table, figure) should have a separate title, benumbered consecutively and be referred to in the text.

All literature consulted during the preparation of the papershould be cited at the end of the text, where authors are listedalphabetically and, among publications by the same author,according to the year of publication. The format of LiteratureCited should include: name of author, initials, year of publication,title, periodical or publisher, number of pages (see below). Titlesof Journals should be in italics and should not be abbreviatedwhile the Book titles will be in italics; In the text reference, thedate should follow the author�s last name without a comma,e.g. (Bourdillon 1895) or Bourdillon (1895) and the followingstyle should be strictly followed.

Side events during the Conference promote the implementationof action-oriented programmes. Poster Presentation

Papers on specific experiments, observation, etc. will bepresented as posters. A display board of 120 x 80 cm will beprovided for each poster. The poster should be legible from adistance of 2 m. The letter size may be 20 mm for author/institution names and 15 mm for headings and 10 mm for text.The posters may be organized into sections such as Introduction,Methods, Results and Discussion and Conclusions. Thefollowing points may be considered for preparing a good poster:

i The matter should be brief with plenty of illustrations (graphs,pictures, photographs, etc.).

ii Pre-printed title of the poster paper will be provided by theorganizers.

iii To improve the quality of the poster, a professional graphicdesigner may be consulted.

All the posters must be ready for display on the afternoon of 3December 2003 in the Poster Display area. For putting up theposter, adhesive tape, pins, etc. will be provided by theorganizers.

ACCOMMODATION

Different hotels in Thrissur provide a wide choice of accommodation ranging from luxury suites to economy class double/singlerooms. Advance booking is generally necessary. Delegates who require their accommodation to be reserved may send a requestin the form provided along with a hotel deposit indicating their requirement (single/double rooms, suites and the preferred class-economy/luxury). FIELD EXCURSIONIn-Conference field excursion is planned for a full day on 4December 2003 to get acquainted with the prevailing plantationmanagement practices (with home garden teak, teak woodfarm, clonal seed orchards, state forest plantations), teak timberdepot, industrial processing and trade in Nilambur, includingthe world�s oldest teak plantation raised in 1842. The othermajor attraction is a visit to teak museum � first of its kindestablished by KFRI depicting history of teak cultivation,management and utilisation.

POST CONFERENCE TOURThe Post-conference tours with five options different ecosystemsand tourist attractions are planed to be organised if there issufficient interest with at least 15 participants for each of fiveoptional tours. The tour Cost includes transportation, meals,refreshments and accommodation (if applicable). The major tourattractions are listed below:

Tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tour registrations can be made during theconference only if there is space available.

6. Post-conference ToursChoose the Post Conference Tour you wish to attend. Fullpayment and reservations are due no later than 1 September2003 along with the Registration Fee. Additional post-conferencetour registration can be made only if the seats are vacant.
