WHAT IS VITA?VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The VITA program offers free tax help to

people who generally make $54,000 or

less, persons with disabilities, the elderly

and limited English speaking taxpayers

who need assistance in preparing their

own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers

provide free basic income tax return

preparation with electronic filing to

qualified individuals.

IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax

counseling are often retired individuals

associated with non-profit organizations

that receive grants from the IRS.

Taxpayers who come to free tax

preparation sites can find out about

programs that will help them leverage

their refunds toward the financial success

of their families. These asset-building

programs provide financial education,

homebuyer’s education, down payment

assistance and low interest car loans.

The Earned Income Tax Credit, EITC or EIC,

is a benefit for working people with low to

moderate income. EITC reduces the amount

of tax you owe and may give you a refund.

The average amount of EITC paid out in 2017 nationwide was more than $2,400. The average amount in Louisiana was more than $2,800.

To qualify for the EITC you must have earned

income from working for someone or from

running or owning a business or farm and

meet basic rules. And, you must either

meet additional rules for workers without a

qualifying child or have a child that meets all

the qualifying child rules for you.
