Preface:
Qatar University’s current vision to develop scientific research along with the efforts of the Office of
Academic Research has turned Qatar University (QU) into a vibrant hub for research activities in the
State of Qatar and the region.
The sudden increase in research activities at the University has necessitated a comprehensive
reorganization of the Office of Academic Research (OAR). In line with this reorganization, the Office of
Academic Research has launched a three-‐year strategic plan for measuring key performance indicators
that require improvement, upgrading and/or growth.
Qatar University is becoming one of the fastest growing institutions for research in the region showing a
compound annual growth rate of 38.8% (based on a 2014 comparative study). The budget for current
active grants and contracts is 225 million dollars of which 68 million dollars was awarded in 2014 alone.
The distribution of the source of funding at QU with 94% coming from Qatar National Research Fund
(QNRF).
The University has undertaken more than 450 research projects with 276 collaborators in the last
academic year. The ever increasing research efforts have resulted in 1577 co-‐authored publications from
718 collaborating institutes. Our researchers publications have increased by approximately 158%.
On the other hand, the field weighted citation impact which is a quality metrics maintained a value of
1.17 in 2012 and 2013, on a positive note we have seen an influx of intellectual property disclosures.
Such indicators, whether in the number of grants, research networking, or the number of intellectual
property disclosures, are prime examples of the University’s commitment to the State of Qatar’s vision
in building a scholastic economy.
So let us all join our efforts to invent the future of Qatar together!

The data presented in the report are based on the years 2010-‐2014. However the data of the year 2014
is not complete, since the data in Scopus database will be completed in May 2015 for the year 2014.
Data Source:
• Scopus was developed by and is owned by Elsevier. It is the largest abstract and citation
database of peer reviewed research literature in the world, with abstracts and citation
information from more than 50 million scientific research articles in 21,000 peer-‐reviewed
journals published by over 5000 publisher spanning all science sectors, including the Arts and
Humanities. (Scopus covers more than 3,000 publications in the field of Arts and Humanities).
Scopus covers approximately 5900 titles from North America, 8400 from Europe, 2800 from
Asia-‐Pacific and 800 from Latin America and Africa.

The below two figures shows the number of publication per year, and the number of authors per year, the count of authors doesn’t necessary mean they are still affiliated to Qatar University. For example for the year 2013, 586 publications were published under Qatar University affiliation by 402 different authors. Typically the publications should remain assigned to the institution even when the Researchers that authored these publications have moved. In other words, the publications are not mobile, despite their authors moving around

Field Weighted Citation Impact:
An indicator representing the quality of research as based on the average number of citations received by a group of papers compared to the world number of citations received by the same type of papers. This metric is field weighted in that it adjusts for differing citations practices in different subjects fields and therefore for different subject emphases of comparator countries.
SNIP (Source-‐Normalized Impact per Paper) is a ratio between the “Raw Impact per Paper”, a type of Citations per Publication calculation, actually received by the journal, compared to the “Citation Potential”, or expected Citations per Publication, of that journal’s field. SNIP takes differences in disciplinary characteristics into account, and can be used to compare journals in different fields. The average SNIP value for all journals in Scopus is 1.0. SNIP measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. The impact of a single citation is given higher value in subject areas where citations are less likely, and vice versa.

The Middle East (also called the Mid East) is a region centered on Western Asia and Egypt. The Eurocentric term is used as a synonym for Near East, in opposition to Far East. The corresponding adjective is Middle Eastern and the derived noun is Middle Easterner. Arabs, Azeris, Kurds, Persians, and Turks constitute the largest ethnic groups in the region by population, while Arameans, Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Copts, Druze, Jews, Maronites, Somalis, and other denominations form significant minorities. * The list of the countries is available in Appendix D

Grant size ranges from US$20,000 to US$300,000 per funded year, and a duration of up to three years. 62 of the 162 total proposals were awarded to QU researchers. This translates to 38.3% of the total awarded proposals (QNRF success rate for NPRP 7th cycle: 20.3%).
