CTIA Battery Life Test

System Overview

Keysight Technologies Inc. and W2BI, Inc. collaborated to

provide CTIA Battery Life Test Plan automated coverage. The

QUIKPROBE™ GLOBAL (QPG-1000) Series Test System

combines emulator and power analyzer hardware from

Keysight with test automation software from W2BI.

QPG-1000 Test System supports multiple technologies. It uses

E7515A (UXM) for LTE and WCDMA technologies. E5515C

(8960) Wireless Test Set support is available for 2G/3G

technologies. QPG-1000 Test System uses N6705B Power

Analyzer with N6781A Power Module. Customers with existing

E5515C hardware may reuse their existing equipment when it

meets the hardware and application requirements.

Keysight – W2BI Advantage

Keysight-W2BI Battery Life Test System implements standard developed by CTIA Working Group supported by leading wireless carriers, OEMs, test equipment manufacturers, and test software vendors.

This emerging industry standard specifies controlled network and device conditions for UE battery performance characterization. The goal is to test battery performance based on a set of realistic scenarios that represent a typical user every day activities – “if test scenarios are realistic, the measured battery performance is an image of real usage in the field”.

We expect all major wireless carriers to adopt this way of testing in due course.

Keysight-W2BI Battery Life Test System offers OEM developers a library of realistic scenarios of battery characterization.

QPG-1000 Test System runs on W2BI’s test automation platform

with pre-packaged test scripts complying with CTIA Battery Life

Test Plan. Emulator and Power Analyzer are fully automated

during test case execution. Users can test across a wide range of

LTE and legacy technology bands. Test system provides

comprehensive logging and reporting capabilities with value-

added reporting formats. Optional customizable reporting

capabilities are also available as add-on options. UE control is

semi-automated with user-friendly and step-by-step guided

instructions for the tester.

For reduced testing times and better equipment utilization QPG-

1000 Test System allows splitting the setups based on wireless

technologies. Data-related test cases can be executed using

UXM setup, Voice/SMS test cases can be executed using 8960.

System Components

QPG-1000 Test System is designed as a self-contained test

system that does not require additional components from the

Internet. All the servers and audio/video files necessary to

execute the tests are available in the local system setup. These

include:

- Built-in Web Server

- Built-in Audio and Video Streaming Server

- Built-in Email server

- Built-in FTP Server

QPG-1000 Test System tests devices running any operating

system.

QPG-1000 Test System implements an innovative test approach

and methodologies developed by CTIA Battery Working Group.

This approach (in contrast to ‘live network’ testing) ensures that

the results are highly repeatable and comparable, whether

comparing UE to UE, or UE rev to UE rev. The system evaluates

UE performance with known network conditions.

Reporting

The QPG-1000 Test System provides comprehensive logging and reporting capabilities. Multiple reports are available for battery life test results evaluation. User has access to summary HTML, detailed HTML with advanced and embedded charts, debug logs, consolidated excel report, and Power Analyzer logs. The reports enable to compare results across different versions of device firmware, models, or applications.

The Interface

QPG-1000 Test System provides a simple and easy-to-use user interface. The operator has complete program and configuration control from the various tabs on the UI. Settings are very intuitive and categorized into logical sections. Users create multiple settings files depending on the test UE. These settings files reused for repetitive execution and edited for new models. By default, the system is configured to run as per CTIA Battery Life Test Plan settings.
