Asanimportantsteptostartanindustrialbranchofthede.NBInetwork,thesymposium“DataDrivenInnovationinIndustrial

Biotechnology”washeldinFrankfurtandjointlyorganizedbyELIXIR,de.NBIandDECHEMA.Lookingtothefuture,thescien-

tificAdvisoryBoard(SAB)andPlenaryMeetingisscheduledfortheendofNovember2018.Oneofthemainpurposesofthis

meetingistopresentthede.NBIactivitiesofthelastyeartotheSABandtoreceivevaluablerecommendationsforthefurther

developmentofthenetwork.

Inthethirdyearofitsexistencethede.NBICloudisagainsupportedwithasignificantBMBFgrant,whichwillbeusedtoclose

hardwaregapsandtoinvestincloudcomputingsecurityandcertification.Anotherhighlightforthede.NBICloudwasthe1st

de.NBICloudusermeetingthattookplaceatBielefeldUniversity.Almost50participantsexchangedideasoncloudcomputing

projectsanddemonstratedtheirinterestinthenewlyestablishedinfrastructure.

Finally, thenewsletterreportsonthe launchofthecompletelynewde.NBIwebpage,whichhasbeendesignedto increase

FIRSTSTEPSTOAde.NBIINDUSTRIALFORUMOneofthemajortasksofthede.NBInetworkconcernsthedevelopmentofanindustrialbranch.Thistaskhassucessfullybeenstartedwith the joint symposium ”DataDriven Innovation in IndustrialBiotechnology“ from15–16October2018 inFrankfurt/Main.Attheendofthesymposiumthefoundationofthede.NBIIndustrialForumforlarge,medium-sizedandsmallcompaniesdealingwithbigdatasetsinthelifesciencesfieldhasbeenannounced.

ThesymposiumwasjointlyorganizedbyELIXIR,de.NBIandDECHEMA.ItwasacontinuationofELIXIR’seventse-riesentitled”InnovationandSMEForum”,whichtoursalloverEuropewithspecificnationalthematicpriorities.

Thankfully, DECHEMA provided their conference facili-tiesandorganizationalknow-how.Altogether,nearly100participants fromacademiaand industry convenedandfollowed the contributions,manyof thempresentedbyspeakersfromindustry.Thede.NBInetworkspecificallyreportedontoolsandservicesinplantphenopyting,pro-teomics, microbial bioinformatics, Galaxy frameworks,de.NBICloud,andsystemsbiologyconsideredtobeofin-terestforindustry.Thegeneralconclusionattheendofthesymposiumwasthatthesuccessoftheeventresultedfromtheexcellentcollaborationofthethreepartners.

FURTHERFINANCIALSUPPORTFORTHEde.NBICLOUD

Thede.NBICloudlocatedat fiveuniversities,namelyBielefeld,Freiburg,Gießen,HeidelbergandTübingen,wasstartedintheyear2016.Thede.NBICloudisfinancedbyBMBFgrants.Inthepast,BMBFprovidedfinancialsupporttoestablishacomputeandstoragecomponent.Nowin2018,theBMBFannouncedtoinvestagaininthede.NBICloud.Thistime,theexistingde.NBIcloudsiteswillreceivefinancialsupporttoclosehardwaregaps.Inaddition,thegrantwillalsobeusedtoinvestincloudcomputingsecurityandcertificationofthede.NBICloud.

Atthemoment,thefederatedde.NBIcloudconsistsofmorethan16,000cores,170TBRAMand38PBstoragecapacity.Acloudportalrepresentsthecentralaccesspointtothefederatedde.NBICloudplatform.Thewholesystemisaccessiblethroughsinglesign-onandisbasedontheELIXIRAuthenticationandAuthorizationInfrastructure(ELIXIR-AAI).Sinceitbecamepro-ductiveinspring2017,thefederatedcloudisalreadyusedbyalargergroupofscientistsfromthelifesciencesareafortheanalysisofbigdatasets.

LAUNCHOFTHENEWde.NBIWEBSITEThede.NBIofficeisproudtopresentthenewde.NBIwebsite.Thenewwebsiteisacompleterede-signfocusedonlucidityandusabilitytodrasticallyincreasetheuser-friendliness.Toaddresstheusersdirectly,theuser-relevantinformation,likethede.NBIservices,trainingcoursesandcloud,isnowpresentedat front. THEde.NBISCIENTIFICADVISORYBOARDANDPLENARYMEETINGThisyear’smeetingof thede.NBIScientificAdvisoryBoard (SAB)will take place on 29 -30November 2018 at the Seminaris Cam-pusHotelinBerlin.Thefirstdayisdedicatedtotheplenarymeetingwithareportbythecoordinator.Thesubsequentlectureswillfea-turebenefitsandvisionsofselectedde.NBIresearchfieldsnamelyhuman,plantandmicrobialbioinformaticsaswellasthesuperordinatetopicsservice,traininganddatamanagement.Furthermore,therecentdevelopmentsinthede.NBIcloudandinworkflowengineswillbepresented.ThecooperationwithELIXIRandconceptsforasustainablecontinuationofthenetworkareconsideredduringthethirdsession.Thedaywillbeconcludedbyapostersession,whereallde.NBIprojectspresenttheirprogresssincesummer2017.

Onthesecondday,thede.NBIPlenaryMeeting2018takesplace.Servicecentercoordinatorswillreportonactivitiesinitiatedtomeetthereviewers'recommendationsthatwereformulatedatthemidtermevaluationlastyear.Thesecondsessioncon-stitutestheELIXIR-DEplenarymeetingfeaturingthenewELIXIRprogram2019-2023andadiscussionofnextstepstoim-provethecollaborationwithELIXIR.

ATTRACTINGTHENEXTGENERATIONOFBIOINFORMATICSSTUDENTS byIvoGroße,SteffenNeumann,UweScholz

ThisyeartheBioBYTEsummerschool2018tookplacefrom16-20July2018attheMLUHalleandthede.NBIpartnersfromtheLeibnizInstitutesIPKandIPBparticipatedinteachingandorganization.Thetargetaudiencewerecuriouspupilswhowanttodiscoverthenaturalsciencesandbioinformaticsofthefuture.Intotal,18pupilsfromalloverGermanyandintheirfinaltwoyearsbeforetakingtheA-level(Abitur)cametoHalleforthisall-weeksummerschool.

Theweekstartedwiththeregistrationandashortintroductionoftheinstitutesandtheteamofthesummerschool,andIvoGroßemotivatedthefascinationofbioinformatics.Theparticipantswerealsoabletovisitthehigh-performancecomputerintheMLUcomputercenter,whichisusedforvarioustasksinthelifesciencesdataanalysis.

Thetopicoftheremainingdaywas"TheWorldofMolecules-ComputerChemistry".ThestudentsbuiltavarietyofmoleculeswithaMoleculeBuildingSet,i.e.thetoy-likemodelsforbondsandatoms.OnlythentheyswitchedtothePCpoolinordertovisualizethesemoleculesontheworkstations,andweretaskedtofindanantibioticagainstListeriamonocytogeneswithpro-teinliganddocking.Thestudentswerethrilledthattheywereabletofollowthefirststepsofdrugdevelopmentthemselves.TheeveningprogramconsistedofaguidedtourthroughthetreasurechamberoftheMartinLutherUniversityHalle.

ResearchersfromtheGermanCropBioGreenformaticsNetwork(GCBN)atLeibnizInstituteofPlantGeneticsandCropPlantResearchinGatersleben(IPK)demonstratedthefieldofbioinformaticsinplantresearch,andthelatestpossibilitiesforDNAsequencing.Thepupilsalsogottoseetheheartoftheinstitute-thefederalex-situ-genebank.Here,too,hugeamountsofdataarecollectedonthegeneticdiversityofourcultivatedplantsandtheirwildrelatives.FinallyDr.AstridJunkerpresentedthetopicofdigitalplantphenotyping.Thesesystemsrecordvariousparameterswithoutdamagingtheplants.Sensorsandcamerasystemsofdifferentwavelengthsprovideinformationonthegrowthoftheplants.Theseparametersprovidenewinsightsintothegenotype-phenotype-environment-interactionofcultivatedplants.

Thede.NBIteamfromtheCenterforIntegrativeBioinformatics(CIBI)attheLeibnizInstituteofPlantBiochemistry(IPB)inHalleintroducedmetabolomics,theinvestigationofmetabolism.Supervisedbybiochemists,thestudentswerethenabletodopracticallaboratoryworkandextractmetabolitesfromvariousplants,suchastomato,potato,paprika,physalisandbitter-sweetnightshade.TheguidedtouroftheIPBincludedavisittooneofthemassspectrometersattheinstitute.Theyevenhadtosolveacriminalmysterystory,andfindoutwhetherasamplefromaredstainwasfrombloodorketchupbycomputationaldataanalysisofthemassspectrometrydata.

Theweekalsoincludedintroductionstomachinelearning,sequenceassemblyandsequenceanalysistasks.Onthelastday,therewastheclosingevent,andtwogirlswonthespecialBioBYTEOnlineQuiz,answeringall17questionscorrectly.Congrat-ulationstoHeleneandNikola!

TheBioBYTESummerSchoolprovidedthesparkforenthusiasmforcomputerscienceinbiologyandaccompaniedtheparticipantsoverthecoursedaysandhopefullybeyond. Inadditiontogainingfirstinsights intotheworldofbioinfor-matics,animportantgoalofthesummerschoolwastoinspireandmotivatepupilstobecomeinterestedinbioinformaticsand tokeepaneyeonit,when choosingtheirprofessionand studies.The summer schoolprovideda goodmixtureof"HandsonScience" - gettingactiveoneself to try thingsout inthegroupandgain insights intoongoingresearch.Wewould like to thankall theparticipants andthe localteamsfortheir efforts, andacknowledgeall financial andlogistic
