Agenda
• Overview• What is 6S?
• 6S Any where and Anybody! • Empower and Engage
• Does everyone know where applicable Safety Exits are located?
• Does everyone know where the external muster points are located?
• Does everyone know where the closest fire extinguishers are located?
• Do you know where the Automated External Defibrillators (AED) Centers are located
• Does anyone have any other safety questions or concerns before we start?
Pre-Event Safety Check !
6S Overview & Objective• The 6S system will allow you & your team
to tackle the everyday Chaos and take charge of productive Change.
• Having a system to Engage & Empower your team will make effective and structured change easy!
Understanding 6S• Based on Japanese and English words
that start with ‘S’• The foundation for all improvements • Focuses on Visual Order, Organization,
Cleanliness and Standardization• Results include a simplified work
environment, reduced waste & non-value added activity while improving quality, efficiency & safety.
The 6 S’s
SORTSHINE

#1 SORT• Sort involves identifying the items in a
defined space according to what is necessary and unnecessary.
• Items are Sorted from ‘required but not frequently used’, ‘required & frequently used’, ‘not needed but requires management approval’ and ‘not required’.
#2 SHINE• Once the area has been sorted and the
space is empty, we do a general SHINE of the area.
• Cleaning the area will also allow us to easily identify problems (i.e. leaks or damage) so we can easily identify the root cause so it does not return.
• Establish a daily routine to maintain the area.
The 6S Numbers Game
The RulesThere are 6 Colour
Coded Stages! Keep your sheets face down
until your instructed to use them.
20 secs per stage
Green: Current State
1st Step is to SORT
All Unnecessary numbers, 50+, were
removed!
Blue: SORT
#3 SET IN ORDER• Unnecessary items have been removed,
space has been cleaned, so now we can identify the best location for the tools frequently used.
• Installing Visual management tools like shadow boards, labelling, Colour Coding will ensure all tools needed are ready and located at POU.
Back to the numbers…
For this exercise we are skipping the Shine step and moving to Set in Order!
A Grid has been installed to allow us to do our job a little easier!
Pink: Set in Order
#4 STANDARDIZE• Ensures the actions of SORT, SHINE and
SET IN ORDER are maintained. • Using consensus, the team comes up with
the best practice for a particular process or area and uses visual management to minimize deviations..
Lets go back to our numbers! We have already made a significant improvement and now we need to Standardize!
It seemed logical to organize the numbers in a standard way to make the completion of the task as easy as possible!
Yellow: Standardize
#5 SUSTAIN• How do we sustain the improvements
we’ve gained in the 6S event ? • This can be achieved through regular
audits, establishing daily responsibilities or installing Visual Assist Photographs (VAP)

the area

#6 SAFETY• Ensuring that any
changes that were made are still safe and we haven’t sacrificed safety to improve the process or area.
• Will our new system allow us to detect a problem right away?
Make your Safety System Visual!
Does the system work? Lets do a test!
Two numbers are missing, how long will it take to find them in our shift?

With our standards in place, does it help?
