PLM, SPC, FMS, SCADA, WIP, and MES1 are all part of an alphabet soup of tech-nologies that have changed the way companies in the manufacturing sector do business. ISO 90012 compliance influences the sheer amount of data that manu-facturers must maintain to document processes. Yet a divide between enterprise systems and the factory floor still makes process improvement difficult.3 Secure, reliable high bandwidth connectivity between systems and across the company-wide network can help manufacturers bridge that gap to become more efficient, more competitive, and thus potentially more profitable.

For example, CAD/CAM systems are a mature technology that has been prevalent in industry for more than a decade. Now, companies are sharing extremely large CAD drawing files in real time, within the company, and with partners and vendors, to make follow-the-sun engineering changes in a product line possible. The data collected by Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), used to automate processes within a plant, can now be shared across the enterprise, along with the process applications, to enable a manufacturer to easily shift production of a product from one plant to another to optimize use of production capacity and personnel.

Qwest® Metro Optical Ethernet, or QMOETM, offers a highly scalable, secure, and cost effective solution to meet the connectivity demands of the evolving manufac-turing sector, between multiple locations, across metro areas. QMOE has also been shown to deliver greater service flexibility – an institution can obtain precisely the amount of bandwidth required – over a network that allows customers to upgrade and increase capacity quickly.

In a global economy, where manufacturing operations are outsourced or relocated to lower cost regions of the world while engineering talent it tapped into wherever it might reside, companies must control costs and maximize efficiency to success-fully compete. In this environment, IT managers in the manufacturing sector focus on four operational imperatives:

Supporting Advanced TechnologiesManufacturing companies are increasingly automating their systems and pro-cesses, collaborating online with their vendors, partners and customers, and implementing systems that enable them to easily transfer production from one plant to another.

Rapidly Adapting to ChangeImplementing running changes in a product line, without shutting down production, can dramatically improve manufacturing efficiency and profitability. This requires close communication between design, purchasing, and the plant manager.

Integrating Processes and DocumentationBecause of the multiple sources of data in a typical manufacturing process, process integration can be a challenge. Sharing consolidated data with ERP systems and the supply chain in a secure fashion adds to the difficulty.

Reducing Operating CostsWith ever increasing pressure to improve productivity and profitability, IT managers know that they must achieve the first three imperatives while reducing costs and improving resource utilization.

Qwest offers a Quality of Service (QoS) feature with QMOETM that enables manufacturers to prioritize network traffic by type to help ensure availability and efficiently manage network resources. Priority 1, for example, might be reserved for real-time supply chain management systems that require low latency connections. Priority 2 might be used for sharing CAD drawings and other large files; Priority 3 for regular business data; and Priority 4 for communications that only require best effort service. Many firms in the manufacturing sector also prefer QMOE because it enables them to control routing and traffic priority.

Qwest can assist manufacturers with the design and deployment of customized network solutions through the Qwest® AdaptiveBuild® process, supported by Qwest technical experts in the Qwest National System Design Center. QMOE so-lutions are highly reliable and backed by a written Service Level Agreement (SLA) that defines performance objectives. The Qwest Network Operations Center (NOC) continually monitors the health of the network to support SLAs.
