1 Document Purpose
The purpose of this document is to summarise:
How Seneca functions, including the server(s) and client components;
Hardware and software requirements for the server(s) and the client components, including
supported platforms;
Any integration services.
Note - Microsoft periodically release updates to their software. These either fix operational problems that
are discovered after general release or provide additional functionality. They are referred to as either
‘Service Packs’ or ‘Software Revisions’. Your respective Operating System, SQL Server version and
version of Microsoft Office must have the most recent update installed. This information can be found on
the Microsoft website - www.microsoft.com.

3 Server Specifications
The Seneca system requires 3 mandatory server components to function. Depending on your
infrastructure, the components can be hosted on one or more servers.
Microsoft SQL Server
Seneca is a client-server application. It relies on a Microsoft SQL database.
Patching Mechanism
The server hosting the patching mechanism requires the FTP Service of IIS to be installed.
Clients connect to the patch server each time it is launched and will download updates if any are present.
The patch server requires internet connectivity to the Egton application patch server via active FTP in
order to retrieve updates which is done automatically when any are available.
FTP Object Store
Objects such as e-mails and Word documents are stored in a Windows directory and are accessed and
maintained via the FTP Service of IIS.

*It is recommended that the Seneca databases are stored on a separate drive to the Operating System to
ensure best performance from the SQL Server.
**Whilst Seneca can run on an express version of SQL Server, it is not recommended due to the limited
database storage and RAM allocation.
***Storage is an estimate only and depends upon intended usage.

3.3 Optional Components
Further information regarding these services can be obtained via the Seneca Support Team -
3.3.1 Database Backup Monitoring
This requires a service installing on the SQL Server. The service will monitor and record the database
backup successes and failures and display the results within the Seneca application.
3.3.2 Disk Space Monitoring
This requires a service installing on the SQL Server. The service will monitor and record the disk space
daily and record the results which can be displayed within the Seneca application.
3.3.3 Comms/Polling Solution
This requires a service installing on a dedicated server. The service is used to scan/poll folders on the
server and upload items such as PDF/s into the Seneca Database automatically.
3.3.4 Web Service
The Seneca Web Service is designed to assist with the extraction of data in a structured format for use
with 3rd party applications.
Note - Integration with this service would be scoped as a separate, chargeable project.

4 Client Specifications
The client consists of:
The Seneca client;
Seneca Office Add-Ins;
Seneca Adobe Plug-In.
4.1 Minimum requirements
The below minimum requirements are for the machine that will be running the Seneca software.
*RAM requirement is an estimate. If you are installing the client in an RDS and/or Citrix environment, the
RAM allocation will depend on the number of users utilising the server(s).

5 Software Integration Services
These services integrate with the Seneca software. Some require additional charges which may be
managed by Egton or the service provider.
5.1 SMS
This requires access to the internet web service provided by Textanywhere. This facility allows users to
send text messages from a Seneca file.
5.2 TAPI
Seneca integrates with Microsoft Windows TAPI compliant telephone systems to provide integrated
telephony features. From Seneca, users are able to initiate telephone calls to contacts. If you are receiving
a call, Seneca can match the number to a contact and list their files.
5.3 Fax
This requires access to a service called InterFAX. This facility allows users to send electronic faxes from a
Seneca file.
5.4 PCA Predict
PCA Predict is an Address Validation Service. When adding contacts into the Seneca system, it will
contact the PCA Predict web service to collect the full address details.
5.5 Bundledocs
Bundledocs essentially takes documents (.DOCX, .MSGs, .PDFS etc..) and merges them into a single
bundle (a .PDF document). The primary goal is to produce a single document with an index and page
numbers that run through the entire document.
5.6 Laserform
Seneca integrates with Advanced Legal’s Laserform via the Laserform ActiveX Control. A standard
Advanced Legal Laserform installation is required.
